• NHibernate, transactions and TransactionScope

  I'm trying to find the best solution to handle transaction in a web application that uses NHibernate. We use a IHttpModule and at HttpApplication.BeginRequest we open a new session and we bind it to the HttpContext with ManagedWebSessionContext.Bind(context, session); We close and unbind the session on HttpApplication.EndRequest. In our Repository base class, we always wrapped a transaction around our SaveOrUpdate, Delete, Get methods like, according to best practice: public virtual void Save(T entity) { var session = DependencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); using (var transaction = session.BeginTransaction()) { session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); transaction.Commit(); } } But then this doesn't work, if you need to put a transaction somewhere in e.g. a Application service to include several repository calls to Save, Delete, etc.. So what we tried is to use TransactionScope (I didn't want to write my own transactionmanager). To test that this worked, I use an outer TransactionScope that doesn't call .Complete() to force a rollback: Repository Save(): public virtual void Save(T entity) { using (TransactionScope scope = new TransactionScope()) { var session = Depe.ndencyManager.Resolve<ISession>(); session.SaveOrUpdate(entity); scope.Complete(); } } The block that uses the repository: TestEntity testEntity = new TestEntity { Text = "Test1" }; ITestRepository testRepository = DependencyManager.Resolve<ITestRepository>(); testRepository.Save(testEntity); using (var scope = new TransactionScope()) { TestEntity entityToChange = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); entityToChange.Text = "TestChanged"; testRepository.Save(entityToChange); } TestEntity entityChanged = testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); Assert.That(entityChanged.Text, Is.EqualTo("Test1")); This doesn't work. But to me if NHibernate supports TransactionScope it would! What happens is that there is no ROLLBACK at all in the database but when the testRepository.GetById(testEntity.Id); statement is executed a UPDATE with SET Text = "TestCahgned" is fired instead (It should have been fired between BEGIN TRAN and ROLLBACK TRAN). NHibernate reads the value from the level1 cache and fires a UPDATE to the database. Not expected behaviour!? From what I understand whenever a rollback is done in the scope of NHibernate you also need to close and unbind the current session. My question is: Does anyone know of a good way to do this using TransactionScope and ManagedWebSessionContext?

I am not sure what parameters come into the function. • Converting Straight Quotes to Curly Quotes

  I have an application which uses a javascript based rules engine. I need a way to convert regular straight quotes into curl (or smart) quotes. It'd be easy to just do a string.replace for ["], only this will only insert one case of the curly quote. The best way I could think of was replace the first occurrence of a quote with a left curly quote and every other one following with a left, and the rest right curly. Is there a way to accomplish this using javascript?

• Coda slider from within Tabbed Ajax?

  Hi I am trying to use a simple Jquery Coda slider (that works fine alone) inside one of the tabs in the Jquery Tools Tabbed Ajax. When I click that tab, it is empty ! while it actually display the Coda slider. • SQL server timeout 2000 from C# .NET

  I have run into a strange problem using SQL Server 2000 and two linked server. For two years now our solution has run without a hitch, but suddenly yesterday a query synchronizing data from one of the databases to the other started timing out. I connect to a server in the production network, which is linked to a server containing orders I need data from. The query contains a few joins, but basically this summarizes what is done: INSERT INTO ProductionDataCache (column1, column2, ...) SELECT tab1.column1, tab1.column2, tab2.column1, tab3.column1 ... FROM linkedserver.database.dbo.Table1 AS tab1 JOIN linkedserver.database.dbo.Table2 AS tab2 ON (...) JOIN linkedserver.database.dbo.Tabl32 AS tab3 ON (...) ... WHERE tab1.productionOrderId = @id ORDER BY ... Obviously my first attempt to fix the problem was to increase the timeout limit from the original 5 minutes. But when I arrived at 30 minutes and still got a timeout, I started to suspect something else was going on. A query just does not go from executing in less than 5 minutes to over 30 minutes over night. I outputted the SQL query (which was originally in the C# code) to my logs, and decided to execute the query in the Query Analyzer directly on the database server. To my big surprise, the query executed correctly in less than 10 seconds. So I isolated the SQL execution in a simple test program, and observed the same query time out both on the server originally running this solution AND when running it locally on the database server. Also I have tried to create a Stored Procedure and execute this from the program, but this also times out. Running it in Query Analyzer works fine in less than a few seconds. It seems that the problem only occurs when I execute this query from the C# program. Has anyone seen such behavior before, and found a solution for it? UPDATE: I have now used SQL Profiler on the server. The obvious difference is that when executing the query from the .NET program, it shows up in the log as "exec sp_executesql N'INSERT INTO ...'", but when executing from Query Analyzer it occurs as a normal query in the log. Further I tried to connect the SQL Query Analyzer using the same SQL user as the program, and this triggered the problem in Query Analyzer as well. So it seems the problem only occurs when connecting via TCP/IP using a sql user.

• help with jquery ajax and templates in asp.net mvc

  So I have a complex form for an IncomeDeclaration. Its going to display a textfield GrossIncome for each Activity that the IncomeDeclaration is related to... this all gets done on the server and works just fine.... the problem is. I just havent figured out a way to do this without ajax... right now I want to get the template to work and append the form elements to the bottom of the list.

• CSS: series of floated elements without wrapping but rather scrolling horizontally

  I'm working on a album viewer. At the top I want a horizontal container of all the image thumbnails. Right now all the thumbnails are wrapped in a div with float:left. I'm trying to figure out how to keep these thumbnails from wrapping to the next line when there are too many, but rather stay all in one horizontal row and use the scrollbar. • Editing a row in a gridview

  I have a two text boxes named region id and region name..and a button control I enter some values into those text boxes and click the button to insert those values into the "gridview"and a "data table" associated with the gridview. The gridview has the "enable editing" set to true..but when i click the "edit" button of a particular row in a gridview i get no response...i.e i do not get editable textboxes as it happens normally... What is the solution for this?

I need the datagrid to parse the input and place the data in the correct rows and columns of the datagrid. flow: click on a date in the tree and it makes a server request for batch information in xml form. Using a CallResponder I then update the datagrid's dataProvider. • PHP Session when using desktop app

  In this question I asked how to POST to a php file form a vb.net app: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2615335/post-to-webpage-in-vb-net-win-forms-desktop-not-asp-net So now I've logged in the user user by posting their username and password to the php file, the php file then does security/checks they exist/etc and if both username and password are correct is stores the user ID in a session variable. Now if the vb.net app tries to download data off a page which needs the user to logged in, it checks this by doing: if (!isset($_SESSION['uid'])) { header("Location: index.php"); } However after having logged correctly in the app the session variable is not set. How does session work with a vb.net app like this? When the user logs in successfully should I download the user id and keep it in the vb.net app and then post it to each page that requires authentication?

• UTF8 encoding not working when using ajax.

  I recently changed some of my pages to be displayed via ajax and I am having some confusion as to why the utf8 encoding is now displaying a question mark inside of a box, whereas before it wasn't. Fore example. The oringal page was index.php. charset was explicitly set to utf8 and is in the <head>. I then used php to query the database Heres is the original index.php page: <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd"> <html lang="en"> <head> <meta http-equiv="content-type" content="text/html; charset=UTF-8"> <title>Title here</title> </head> <body class='body_bgcolor' > <div id="main_container"> <?php Data displayed via php was simply a select statement that output the HTML. ?> </div> However, when I made the change to add a menu that populated the "main_container" via ajax all the utf8 encoding stopped working. • Sql Server Service Broker Conversation Groups

  Can someone explain conversation groups in service broker? Currently, I'm using service broker to send messages from one SQL server to another. On the sending server, I'm trying to correlate the messages so they are processed in serial on the receiving side. Based on the documentation, conversation groups seem to be a perfect fit for this, but on the receiving server, the messages get assigned to a different conversation group from the one I specified when sending the message. I've search around the web and saw that this behavior seems to be intended (http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sqlservicebroker/thread/baf48074-6804-43ab-844a-cb28a6dce02b/), but then I'm confused about the usefulness of the syntax from (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms178624.aspx) WAITFOR( GET CONVERSATION GROUP @conversation_group_id FROM [dbo].[ReceiveQueue] ) If the conversation group doesn't come across with the message from the sender and messages sent with the same conversation group id don't have the same conversation group id on the receive side, what's the point of the code above?

  I'm trying to setup a simple EAV pattern in my web app using Java/Spring MVC and Hibernate. I can't seem to figure out the magic behind the hibernate XML setup for this scenario. My database table "SETUP" has three columns: user_id (FK) setup_item setup_value The database composite key is made up of user_id | setup_item Here's the Setup.java class: public class Setup implements CommonFormElements, Serializable { private Map data = new HashMap(); private String saveAction; private Integer speciesNamingList; private User user; Logger log = LoggerFactory.getLogger(Setup.class); public String getSaveAction() { return saveAction; } public void setSaveAction(String action) { this.saveAction = action; } public User getUser() { return user; } public void setUser(User user) { this.user = user; } public Integer getSpeciesNamingList() { return speciesNamingList; } public void setSpeciesNamingList(Integer speciesNamingList) { this.speciesNamingList = speciesNamingList; } public Map getData() { return data; } public void setData(Map data) { this.data = data; } } My problem with the Hibernate setup, is that I can't seem to figure out how to map out the fact that a foreign key and the key of a map will construct the composite key of the table... this is due to a lack of experience using Hibernate.
