• DotNetOpenAuth RelayParty not working on load balanced cluster

  We're trying to move an ASP.NET MVC application, which uses DotNetOpenAuth OpenID Version 3.4.1, from a single server web garden to a physical server cluster held behind a hardware load balancer. We even tried removing out nonce store and using a stateless connection, but that didn't work either. We always get the same error. We suspected the issue is arising as a result of the cluster node having a different IP from the load balancer when it connects to the OpenID Provider, but we're not sure. Any ideas?

• Where are the factory_girl records?

  I'm trying to perform an integration test via Watir and RSpec. So, I created a test file within /integration and wrote a test, which adds a test user into a base via factory_girl. The problem is — I can't actually perform a login with my test user. The test I wrote looks as following: ... before(:each) @user = Factory(:user) @browser = FireWatir::Firefox.new end it "should login" @browser.text_field(:id, "username").set(@user.username) @browser.text_field(:id, "password").set(@user.password) @browser.button(:id, "get_in").click end ... As I'm starting the test and see a "performance" in browser, it always fires up a Username is not valid error. I've started an investigation, and did a small trick. First of all I've started to have doubts if the factory actually creates the user in DB. So after the immediate call to factory I've put some puts User.find stuff only to discover that the user is actually in DB. Ok, but as user still couldn't have logged in I've decided to see if he's present in DB with my own eyes. I've added a sleep right after a factory call, and went to see what's in the DB at the moment. I was crushed to see that the user is actually missing there! How come? Still, when I'm trying to output a user within the code, he is actually being fetched from somewhere. So where does the records, made by factory_girl within a runtime lie? Is it test or dev DB? I don't get it. I've 10 times checked if I'm running my Mongrel in test mode (does it matter? I think it does, as I'm trying to tun an integration test) and if my database.yml holds the correct connection specific data. I'm using an authlogic, if that can give any clue (no, putting activate_authlogic doesn't work here).

• Using .NET's HttpWebRequest to download a multitude of files in a row

  I have an application that needs to download several files in a row in succession (sometimes a few thousand). However, what ends up happening when several files need to be downloaded is I get an exception with an inner exception of type SocketException and the error code 10048 (WSAEADDRINUSE). I did some digging and basically it's because the server has run out of sockets (and they are all waiting for 240s or so before they become available again) - not coincidentally it starts happening around the 1024 file range. I would expect that the HttpWebRequest/ServicePointManager would be reusing my connection, but apparently it is not (and the files are https, so that may be part of it). I never saw this problem in the C++ code that this was ported from (but that doesn't mean it didn't ever happen - I'd be surprised if it was, though). I am properly closing the WebRequest object and the HttpWebRequest object has KeepAlive set to true by default. Next my intent is to fiddle around with ServicePointManager.SetTcpKeepAlive(). However, I can't see how more people haven't run into this problem. Has anyone else run into the problem, and if so, what did you do to get around it? Currently I have a retry scheme that detects this error and waits it out, but that doesn't seem like the right thing to do. • Error creating Rails DB using rake db:create

  Hi- I'm attempting to get my first "hello world" rails example going using the rails' getting started guide on my OSX 10.6.3 box. • Problem retrieving Strings from varbinary columns using HIbernate and MySQL

  Hello, Here's my scenario. I save a bunch of Strings containing asian characters in MySQL using Hibernate. These strings are written in varbinary columns. Everything works fine during the saving operation. The DB contains the correct values (sequence of bytes). If I query (again using Hibernate) for the Strings that I saved I get the correct results. But when Hibernate fills the entity to which the Strings belong with the values from the DB I get different values then the ones I used in the query that retrieved them. Instead of receiving the correct values I receive a bunch of FFFD replacement characters. For example: if I store "??" in the DB and then I query for it, the resulting String will be \uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD\uFFFD. the DB connection has the following parameters set useUnicode=true&characterEncoding=UTF-8, I've tried using the true UTF-8 configurations for Hibernate but that didn't solve the problem What am I missing? • Generate JSON object with transactionReceipt

  Hi, I've been the past days trying to test my first in-app purchse iphone application. Unfortunately I can't find the way to talk to iTunes server to verify the transactionReceipt. Because it's my first try with this technology I chose to verify the receipt directly from the iPhone instead using server support. But after trying to send the POST request with a JSON onbject created using the JSON api from google code, itunes always returns a strange response (instead the "status = 0" string I wait for).   Imagine the following XML document: <root> <person_data> <person> <name>John</name> <age>35</age> </person> <person> <name>Jim</name> <age>50</age> </person> </person_data> <locations> <location> <name>John</name> <country>USA</country> </location> <location> <name>Jim</name> <country>Japan</country> </location> </locations> </root> I then select the person node for Jim: XmlNode personNode = doc.SelectSingleNode("//person[name = 'Jim']"); And now from this node with a single XPath select I would like to retrieve Jim's location node. Something like: XmlNode locationNode = personNode.SelectSingleNode("//location[name = {reference to personNode}/name]"); Since I am selecting based on the personNode it would be handy if I could reference it in the select. Is this possible?.. is the connection there? Sure I could put in a few extra lines of code and put the name into a variable and use this in the XPath string but that is not what I am asking.

  Hi there, my goal is to secure the communication between MSMQ Queue Managers – I don’t want unknown clients sending messages to my MSMQ server. I have spent many hours now trying to get Transport security working for the net.msmq binding in WCF, where MSMQ is in Workgroup mode and the client and server do not have Active Directory… so I’m using certificates. I have created a new X.509 certificate, called Kristan and put it into the “Trusted people” store on the server and into the My store of Current User of the client. The error I’m getting is: An error occurred while sending to the queue: Unrecognized error -1072824272 (0xc00e0030).Ensure that MSMQ is installed and running. If you are sending to a local queue, ensure the queue exists with the required access mode and authorization. Using smartsniff, I see that there’s no attempted connection with the remote MSMQ, however, it’s an error probably coming from the local queue manager. • Blank subreport in Jasper Reports

  Hi all, I'm trying to launch a report that I created in iReport which contains a main report and a subreport. In iReport, the subreport launches fine and contains data, however when I try to launch it from within my java code, the subreport is blank. What I've done so far: I have a String parameter in the main report called "SUBREPORT" that is used to define the path to the subreport. E.g. value: "E:\java\ReportLauncher\reports\test_subreport1.jasper" The subreport expression in the main report is set to: $P{SUBREPORT} The subreport connection expression is: $P{REPORT_CONNECTION} I also have a subreport parameter defined called "INVOICE_NUMBER" that is set to $F{InviInvNo}, which maps to a field in the main report. In my java code, I have: HashMap<String, Object> paramHash = new HashMap(); paramHash.put("INVOICE_NUMBER", invoiceID); paramHash.put("REPORT_CONNECTION", this.conn); paramHash.put("SUBREPORT", subReportPath); JasperPrint jasperprint = JasperFillManager.fillReport(this.reportPath, paramHash, this.conn); The main report is created fine and is populated.   There is a functionality in my module, where the user can scan the number of serial ports in the system and when the user clicks "Auto scan" button, the code will have to go through each serial port and send a test message and wait for the reply. I am using Progress bar control to show process of autoscan. For which i need to pass the value to "x" and "Y" in my code to update the bar. How can i pass the value since my code is already in a foreach loop for getting the serialports.   I'm building a 4 layered ASP.Net web application. The layers are: Data Layer Entity Layer Business Layer UI Layer The entity layer has my data model classes and is built from my entity data model (edmx file) in the datalayer using T4 templates (POCO). The entity layer is referenced in all other layers. How can I return this IEnumerable object from my data layer so that it does not rely on the ObjectContext, but solely on the DataModel? Is there a way to limit lazy loading to only occur in the data layer?

• Good locations worldwide for a coder gypsy wannabe

  Yes, this is not programming related but please bear with me =). I run a small niche SaaS business. Lately I've been thinking of traveling and experiencing life in other places. Would really appreciate suggestions for good places a developer could relocate to. In particular I'm looking for a place that: Has good internet connection (cheap stable broadband, lots of places that provide free wifi, etc.) Low cost of living (rent and food fairly cheap). At least half of the population speak English. Has a local courier agent (DHL, Fedex, any...). The government allows for extended stay of foreigners. I'm thinking of staying for about 6 months at each location and maybe doing it for 3 years. So looking for 5 to 6 locations in total. So if any of you think you're staying in a place that would be great for a visiting developer then please shout out. Include as detailed a description as possible. And include any cons about the place if there are. The only place that pops to mind right now is Bali =). Isle of Skye also seems interesting but I think immigration is tight and cost of living would definitely be higher. Thanks in advance for suggestions =)

• When to use RDLC over RDL reports?

  I have been studying SSRS 2005 / 2008 in the past weeks and have created some server side reports. For some application, a colleague suggested that I look into RDLC for that particular situation. I am now trying to get my head around the main difference between RDL and RDLC. Searching for this information yields fragmented information at best. I have learned that: RDLC reports do not store information about how to get data. RDLC reports can be executed directly by the ReportViewer control. But I still don't fully understand the relation between the RDLC file and the other related systems (the Reporting Server, the source database, the client). In order to get a good grasp on RDLC files, I would like to know how their use differs from RDL files and in what situation one would choose RDLC over RDL. Links to resources are also welcome. Update: A thread on the ASP.NET forums discusses this same issue. From it, I have gained some better understanding on the issue. A feature of RDLC is that it can be run completely client-side in the ReportViewer control. This removes the need for a Reporting Services instance, and even removes the need for any database connection whatsoever, but: It adds the requirement that the data that is needed in the report has to be provided manually. Whether this is an advantage or a disadvantage depends on the particular application. In my application, an instance of Reporting Services is available anyway and the required data for the reports can easily be pulled from a database. Is there any reason left for me to consider RDLC, or should I simply stick with RDL?

• IP address spoofing using Source Routing

  With IP options we can specify the route we want an IP packet to take while connecting to a server. If we know that a particular server provides some extra functionality based on the IP address can we not utilize this by spoofing an IP packet so that the source IP address is the privileged IP address and one of the hosts on the Source Routing is our own. So if the privileged IP address is x1 and server IP address is x2 and my own IP address is x3. I send a packet from x1 to x2 which is supposed to pass through x3. x1 does not actually send the packet. It is just that x2 thinks the packet came from x1 via x3. Now in response if x2 uses the same routing policy (as a matter of courtesy to x1) then all packets would be received by x3. Will the destination typically use the same IP address sequences as specified in the routing header so that packets coming from the server pass through my IP where I can get the required information? Can we not spoof a TCP connection in the above case? Is this attack used in practice?

• How do I get SSIS Data Flow to put '0.00' in a flat file?

  I have an SSIS package with a Data Flow that takes an ADO.NET data source (just a small table), executes a select * query, and outputs the query results to a flat file (I've also tried just pulling the whole table and not using a SQL select). The problem is that the data source pulls a column that is a Money datatype, and if the value is not zero, it comes into the text flat file just fine (like '123.45'), but when the value is zero, it shows up in the destination flat file as '.00'. I need to know how to get the leading zero back into the flat file. I've tried various datatypes for the output (in the Flat File Connection Manager), including currency and string, but this seems to have no effect. I've tried a case statement in my select, like this: CASE WHEN columnValue = 0 THEN '0.00' ELSE columnValue END (still results in '.00') I've tried variations on that like this: CASE WHEN columnValue = 0 THEN convert(decimal(12,2), '0.00') ELSE convert(decimal(12,2), columnValue) END (Still results in '.00') and: CASE WHEN columnValue = 0 THEN convert(money, '0.00') ELSE convert(money, columnValue) END (results in '.0000000000000000000') This silly little issue is killin' me. Can anybody tell me how to get a zero Money datatype database value into a flat file as '0.00'?

• Iterating arrays in a batch file

  I am writing a batch file (I asked a question on SU) to iterate over terminal servers searching for a specific user. So, I got the basic start of what I'm trying to do. Enter a user name Iterate terminal servers Display servers where user is found (they can be found on multiple servers now and again depending on how the connection is lost) Display a menu of options Iterating terminal servers I have: for /f "tokens=1" %%Q in ('query termserver') do (set __TermServers.%%Q) Now, I am getting the error... Environment variable __TermServers.SERVER1 not defined ...for each of the terminal servers. This is really the only thing in my batch file at this point. Any idea on why this error is occurring? Obviously, the variable is not defined, but I understood the SET command to do just that. I'm also thinking that in order to continue working on the iteration (each terminal server), I will need to do something like: :Search for /f "tokens=1" %%Q in ('query termserver') do (call Process) goto Break :Process for /f "tokens=1" %%U in ('query user %%username%% /server:%%Q') do (set __UserConnection = %%C) goto Search However, there are 2 things that bug me about this: Is the %%Q value still alive when calling Process? When I goto Search, will the for-loop be starting over? I'm doing this with the tools I have at my disposal, so as much as I'd like to hear about PowerShell and other ways to do this, it would be futile. I have notepad and that's it. Note: I would continue this line of questions on SuperUser, except that it seems to be getting more into programming specifics.

• Client-Server Networking Between PHP Client and Java Server

  Hi there, I have a university project which is already 99% completed. It consists of two parts-website (PHP) and desktop (Java). People have their accounts on the website and they wish to query different information regarding their accounts. They send an SMS which is received by desktop application which queries database of website (MySQL) and sends the reply accordingly. This part is working superbly. The problem is that some times website wishes to instruct the desktop application to send a specific SMS to a particular number. Apparently there seems no way other than putting all the load to the DB server... This is how I made it work. Website puts SMS jobs in a specific table. Java application polls this table again and again and if it finds a job, it executes it. Even this part is working correctly but unfortunately it is not acceptable by my university to poll the DB like this. :( The other approach I could think of is to use client-server one. I tried making Java server and its PHP client. So that whenever an SMS is to be sent, the website opens a socket connection to desktop application and sends two strings (cell # and SMS message). Unfortunately I am unable to do this. I was successfully to make a Java server which works fine when connected by a Java client, similarly my PHP client connects correctly to a PHP server, but when I try to cross them, they start hating each other... PHP shows no error but Java gives StreamCorruptedException when it tries to read header of input stream. Could someone please tell what I can try to make PHP client and Java server work together? Or if the said purpose can be achieved by another means, how? Regards, Yasir

On Snow leopard, the library seems to automatically pick up the cookie for this site and later connections sent out is set with correct "cookie" headers.
