• Hyper-v vs Virtualbox

  I am using Oracle VirtualBox for ubuntu guest virtual servers on windows server 2008 R2. I'm in a plan to migrate(stop using virtualbox) from VirtualBox to Hyper-V. I guess many are using hyper-v virtualization and have good control over it and could help me here in clarifying few things. The reason I use Virtualbox is it's open source and the reason for migrating is that if hyper-v support any additional feature which virtualbox doesn't(and I couldn't migrate VBox vms along with all the snapshots). I have following questions to get it clarified. Does hyper-v require any licence or is limited to running particular number of virtual machines?. Is hyper-v capable to export/import VMs along with all the snapshots? Is it possible to run HeadLess VMs like it's done with VirtualBox? Does hyper-v recognize VDI/VMDK? Anybody can suggest me anything?. Thanks!

• How do I securely share / allow access to a drive?

  To simplify backing up a laptop (Windows Vista), I'm planning on sharing its C: drive (with password protection) and using that to back it up from another computer. What are the security implications of this? If I share C: with a reasonable password, how big is the risk of compromise if the system is e.g. inadvertently used on a public WLAN or similar? Background: I'm planning to use [Areca Backup][1] to back up two systems (Windows XP and Vista). My current plan is to install Areca on the XP box, and share the Vista system's C: as a shared folder, so the XP system can read it. Then I can set up the drive as a network drive and have Areca read it like a local drive. Of course, if you can think of a more elegant way of doing this, I'm open to suggestions.

• Social Media Aggregator, Global Update via Powershell

  Does anyone know of a way to interface with a Social Media Aggregator using Powershell. For Instance, I would like to update my global status on digsby using Powershell. Digsby would then fan the message out to Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, Etc.. I am open to using any Social Media Aggregator that can do this.. Digsby, Seesmic, Ping.fm TweetDeek, etc.. If any of these programs have a com interface or something like it I'm sure who ever implements this first will have a large gain in users.

• Can Office Project Server 2010 handle issue tracking?

  I have a scenario where I want to be able to allow customers to login to a customer facing portal on the web, and log issues / bugs. Internal team members should then be notified via email and the issue should be logged in Project Server. The ticket status should be Open, until either resolved or close, where the customer will be notified via email. Is this possible to do using Microsoft Project Server 2010? The question could also be can customers submit bugs to office 2010 projects via a custom web form of some kind, and can project handle the back-end gracefully.

  Hi, I have a Netware Novell server with an eDirectory and different objects configured. I implemented an OEServer2 SP1 to emulate a DSfW to manage the eDirectory with AD. I join the domain with the Administrator login and I am logged as the Administrator domain. So far, there are no problems. When I open the MMC window on Windows Server 08 and snap in the "Active Directory Users and Computers" I can see all the OUs and objects presented in the Netware N. server. But, when I select some OUs I can have an error, and when I select other I don’t have this error. Error: “Data from XXXXX is not available from Domain Controller OES2.yyyy.local because: The server is unwilling to process the request. Try again later, or choose another DC by selecting Connect to Domain Controller on the Domain context menu.” With XXXX= OU’s name and yyyy.local= domain name and OES2 server name If somebody can upload this SP or post a link to download it...   OS: Vista and Windows7 I have Microsoft Office Document Imaging installed. .tif and .tiff files association is set to " Microsoft Office Document Imaging" When I open a TIFF file, it opens in " Microsoft Office Document Imaging". Good so far. However, when I right-click on the TIFF file and invoke print, I see a "Print Pictures" dialog, ("How do you want to print your pictures?") I have some applications installed on my machine that print incoming TIFF files on the printer. They work fine on XP. However, on Vista and Windows7, I get this "Print pictures" prompt requiring an user intervention (i.e, click on Print button). How do I get rid of this "Print Pictures" prompt?

• Solution to Manage and Monitor (Ubuntu) Machines

  I'm looking for a tool like Canonical (system management and monitoring for Ubuntu) that is Open Source and free. The goal is to manage a dozen or so KVM machines for private testing purposes. I know of puppet and munin or RHQ as separate tools to manage and monitor, but I'd prefer something integrated. Any tips? Basic requirements would be: system package management and update (individual selection for each managed node) configuration of basic system services (Users, NFS, cron, ideally also Apache) monitoring (charting of system resources, disk, io, memory, etc) and alerting, ideally a default configuration with sensible values for alerts

• Taking over and Moving a PHP site

  I have a internal use PHP site at my new position. It only runs a few days a year off site so we keep it on laptops. The hardware it has been on, a 8 year IBM Thinkpad running Fedora, is dying. I have new Lenovo Thinkpad's running latest and greatest Ubuntu. I have copied the contents of var to a shared drive, renamed the old www folder in var on the new machine and copied over the old www folder. I can get to the login page and into the site, but when I look something up it returns Cannot Open. I know I cannot get to the MySQL in the new machine because users and passwords dont match. The version of the PHP from the old machine is before the setup script was included. I know very little about PHP. I am looking for input on the proper way to link the old PHP files to my mysql instance. Any help, much appreciated.

• Standard for feeding test data to a Nagios plugin?

  I'm developing a Nagios plugin in Perl (no Nagios::Plugin, just plain Perl). The error condition I'm checking for normally comes from a command output, called inside the plugin. However, it would be very inconvenient to create the error condition, so I'm looking for a way to feed test output to the plugin to see if it works correctly. The easiest way I found at the moment would be with a command line option to optionally read input from a file instead of calling the command. if($opt_f) { open(FILE, $opt_f); @output = <FILE>; close FILE; } else { @output = `my_command`; } Are there other, better ways to do this?

• Why do some PDFs lag in Adobe Acrobat?

  I have a handful of PDFs open. One of them in particular is extremely laggy, almost to the point of being unreadable. When I scroll through its pages, it's almost like an extreme version of v-sync being turned off. Very choppy. Overall system resources are plentiful, and all of the other PDFs cruise up and down with no stuttering or problems. I've tried closing and reopening the problem PDF to no avail. It's a small PDF, only 3MB in size, with no graphics (only programming code snippets). Surely, it must be some type of problem with the specific PDF (I'll try opening it in another PDF-viewing program, rather than Acrobat X). Possible corruption? Could there be some type of GPU/hardware-acceleration intervening going on? I've never heard of such with PDF-viewing.

• hardware: delay and distinct 'click' before hard drive access

  I have a windows 7 box stashed away in my closet, containing (among other things) 2 big HDDs linked together as a mirrored volume - basically a super lazy NAS / media server. I've noticed that when that drive is accessed (whether locally, on the machine itself, or remotely, from another computer, or my xbox, for example) there's a noticeable pause, and then from the computer itself, a 'click!' noise, after which the drive is accessed; e.g. open \\computername\shared\, wait 2 seconds, hear 'click!' and then see files appear in windows explorer. Any ideas? Otherwise the drive preforms normally - is it a windows thing? a HDD-about-to-die thing? Or a "yeah that always happens, you've just never noticed it before" thing?

• Windows 8 isn't detecting PS3 eye

  I have the PS3 Eye web cam installed with drivers from Code Laboratories, which comes with a test program. When I open the test program it shows a clear picture from the webcam. Every other program does not detect a webcam. The cam shows in my device manager and as installed correctly. My question is, is there a flag or something like that I can set that will show Windows 8 that this device is in fact a camera and is working. • bootstraping a SparkleShare project

  I just tried SparkleShare as a possible replacement for dropbox/insynch. It looks quite promising, being based on open standards. I was wondering if someone has gone though the process of "bootstraping" a SparkleShare project. I have the initial files I would like to keep synchronized on two clients and the server (as plain files). I was wondering if there would be a way to set a project up so that I would not need to download/upload all the files back and forth (as they are readily available on all three systems). I guess this would involve some git kung-fu I am far from mastering. Thanks!

• Why my browsers display XML files as blank pages?

  Every time I open an XML file, all I get is blank page instead of tag tree. The file itself is correct and loads okay, I can see it via View Source or in the Firebug. I've tried turning off all my addons and tried running Firefox in safe mode, but the problem was not solved. I'm guessing that I've messed up my configuration somehow and Firefox now tries to render XML files as HTML ones. I've tried googling, but with no success. Help, please? • Why doesn't tmux respond to shortcuts properly?

  I'm using OSX 10.8.1 in combination with iTerm2, zsh and tmux via Homebrew. The beginning of my ~/.tmux.conf file looks like this: set -g prefix C-a unbind C-b bind-key a send-prefix set -sg escape-time 1 When I start tmux and press C-a c, nothing happens. When I spam C-a c fast enough then some new tabs open up, but not the equivalent count of my command spaming. When I press C-a first followed by c, nothing happens again. Is there a delay issue or what's up with my tmux installation/configuration?

• Can I find the session ID for a user logged on to another machine?

  I want to open an application on another computer on the same network via the command line. The scenario here is that the user is in a room surrounded by about 20 computers and wants to be able to launch the same app on every computer without walking from screen to screen opening it up on each individual machine. I've discovered that I can get the basic functionality for this using PsExec as follows: psexec \\[computer] -u [username] -p [password] -d -i [SessionID] [program] For computer, username, password, and program, I'm good. Does anyone know of a way I can figure out which SessionID is assigned to a particular user logged on to a particular machine on the network? Alternately, is there a better way to go about what I'm trying to accomplish?

• Win2008 - restrict VPN user permissions

  Windows 2008 R2 SP1 Foundations file server with no AD, only workgroup sharing some folders, and now a RRAS server. Shared folders are open to everyone in the office (XPs and Sevens) without accounts/passwords, but I was thinking about partially limiting access to the new "VPNuser" account. I'm new to Windows Server and its permissions settings: I thought about denying access to vpnuser through NTFS rights in some folders. It doesn't work, but now I'm guessing that the vpnuser is not considered as a logged user (doesn't appear as such) and is considered a "guest", like the rest of people connecting in the office. • .gitignore, hidden file

  I have some problems with the hidden files. I can see a file in cmd (it is a .gitignore file), but I cannot see it when I open it normally in a folder. I have changed alredy an option to see all hidden files. And I cannot see it as well in a git command prompt. What should I do to be able to see it? Thanks. PS. I can see it normally in a folder BUT it has no name. When I click on this file's settings it shows me: Datatype: Textdocument(.gitignore) Is it normal`?

• How do I examine my Windows firewall outbound rules?

  I need a program to listen to port 9000 on localhost with my Windows firewall. I've created an outgoing and an incoming rule for my program but I can only see my incomming rule in the Windows firewall general menu? I've also noticed that I've many more outgoing rules in my outgoing rule menu but I can only see 4 outgoing rules in my general firewall menu but I see many many more incomming rules? The program doesn't listen to port 9000 or it doesn't working. I've also tried netstat -a -p to no avail. I didn't see 0.0.0.0:9000 in the output? How can I check if my program listen to port 9000 or connect to port 9000 when it's open?

  google is giving no love on this one today, so I turn to the experts... I'm currently hacking together a script that relies on the /proc/pid/environ feature in Linux (RHEL 4) to check for a particular environment variable. Trouble is, it seems certain environment variables aren't showing up in there for some reason. Example: create some test vars: $ export T_1=testval TEST_1=testval T=testval TESTING_LONGEST=testval open a subshell: $bash $ cat /proc/self/environ|tr "\0" "\n"|grep testval TESTVARIABLE_LONGEST=testval T=testval hmm... where did T_1 and TEST_1 go?? what rules govern this strange universe? • Why does m4 error "linux-gnu.m4 - No such file or directory" appear the first time after updating sendmail.mc?

  SendMail 8.14.x | CentOS 5.x I've noticed that if I manually update /etc/mail/sendmail.mc (for example, enable TLS support), and then bounce sendmail, I get the following error: Shutting down sm-client: [ OK ] Shutting down sendmail: [ OK ] Starting sendmail: sendmail.mc:18: m4: cannot open `/usr/share/sendmail-cf/ostype/linux-gnu.mf': No such file or directory [ OK ] Starting sm-client: [ OK ] This only happens one time after I update a sendmail.mc file. If I bounce sendmail again (without making any other change), I don't see the error any more. Any idea why this happens? It doesn't cause any errors - I'm just curious.
