• Active Directory: Find out which users belong to a Group Policy Object

  Hi, I want to make sure that certain users are available in a group from the windows domain. I installed "Group Policy Management" and can open the Forest, the Domain. But then I am not sure what I am searching. I can select a link to a Group Policy Object (GPO). In Settings i see the Drive Maps and I know them. But how can I display a list of users that use this GPO? Right-click, Edit... is disabled. net group my_gpo does not work since I am not on a Windows Domain Controller. Any possibility to find out anyway?

• How do I lower idle cpu usage in ubuntu linux? Gnome or KDE Variants

  My question comes from a kde desktop currently, but it also happens with the gnome instance. When just sitting there, with only the cpu monitor widget running. no open windows, no background processes other than the desktop, my cpu is at ~20%. I wanna know how to fix this, and possibly get better performance out of it. When running my windows side, the cpu will sit at zero, and i generally load new programs about 400ms faster. With windows 7 being as slow as it is, this is not acceptable. and the widget is only set to check every 500ms, so im almost completely sure its not the widget. My system is a Gateway nv 53 amd 2.0 ghz turion with 4 gb of installed ram, and 500 gb hd. both linux and windows are 64 bit. average ram use on either system is about 1.4 gb for just the os

• How to reliably run a batch job every 5 seconds?

  I'm building an application where the sending of all notifications (email, SMS, fax) will be asynchronous. The application will write the notifications to the database, and a batch job will read these notifications and send them with the appropriate transport. I was first reading at ways to run cron faster than the minute, and realized this was a bad idea. The batch scripts are written in PHP, and I guess that writing a proper daemon would be quite an overhead (though I'm open to any suggestion, as PHP car run indefinitely as well). What I have in mind is a solution that would: Run the PHP script every 5 seconds Check that the previous run has finished, or abort (never 2 concurrent batches running) Kill the script if live for more than x minutes (a security in case it hangs) Start with the system (if a reboot occurs) Any idea how to do this?

• Start Menu freezes when highlighting 'All Programs'

  Hey all, A friends machine is lagging for about 30 seconds when they highlight 'All Programs'. A gray box popus up where the program menu would be, but it doesnt populate for nearly 30 seconds. This seems to happen if he hasn't open the start menu for a bit.. but if he get's it working once, doing it immediatly afterwards will usually not have the same lag. Assuming computer hardware isn't an issue, any ideas what the problem may be? Sidenote: He mentioned making desktop shortcuts is taking long as well, does that give any clues?

• How do I create a Windows Batch file that does not show the Command Prompt when executed?

  I have installed a ruby gem called Redcar, which is launched from the command line. When it runs, it steals the shell until it terminates, so I have to create a new shell window to continue doing command line work. The shell I'm using is the GITBash shell from MySysGit. I found a Redcar.bat file which is meant to launch Redcar as a shortcut, I presume, but I don't want the extra command prompt window to open whenever I launch the BAT file. How do I just run the BAT without seeing the prompt?

  This probably is a very open ended question, but really I'm only looking for a specific aspect I suppose. It relates to a reboot question I posted earlier, relating to restart orders of servers, Server Restart's and Respective Orders. Please take a look if you get a second for input! Basically - in relation to how Exchange integrates with AD, what would happen in two scenarios: 1). The Exchange server is booted up before the DC is online 2). • Why does the task pictogram flashes instead of opening the program?

  Sometimes, when I select a click a program on the Windows 7 taskbar it won't appear (it doesn't gain focus and remains behind other open windows), and the icon will flash and turn orange. This happens reasonably frequently, and I've had it happen on two separate Windows installs on different machines. It just happened now and the only programs I have with active windows are Chrome, WMP and Explorer (2). It happened when I clicked Explorer. Once this has happened to one window, it affects all windows, and the only way I can switch between programs is by finding the window manually or using Windows+Tab. The only way I've come across to get the computer to snap out of this annoying behaviour is to restart the machine. Is there a way of stopping it?   alright, I've got one that should be really simple. I want a wide open smb share for my Windows 7 machine. Everyone should be able to access it, regardless of domain or username or anything. My smb.conf has: security = share guest account = nobody Along with: [DC_Backup] path = /Windows_Backups/DC comment = Backup of Domain Controller force user = nobody guest ok = yes public = yes read only = no I can access it, but I cannot write to it. Windows keeps telling me I "need permission to perform this action" Where do I start?

• Client side certificates in client browsers with unix server for management

  We are currently running Unix dedicated servers for everything (Web cluster, database, FTP, batch, ...) except for a Microsoft Active Directory Certificate Services. The sole purpose of this Windows box is to provide client side certificates to our clients browsers. All our clients are required to install a client side certificate on order for them to be able to access our website. Is there an alternative in the Unix space? The purpose is to make sure only the approved hardware of an approved client can access our website. I'm open for any solution that provides me with this level of security. We are however talking about thousands of certified computers just so you can factor that in in a proposed solution. Optionally we would also like to be able to revoke access. With Regards.

• Downloading content greater than 2000 bytes from local network hangs in browser on Windows XP

  We have web application that runs under Tomcat in a local network. Our customers experience strange problem using this web application. Let's say Tomcat server runs on host1 and we open webapp URL in browser on host2. Any browser on host 2 starts opening page and downloading of content "hangs" for hours. We've made bunch of experiments and found that any content larger than 2000 bytes makes browser request hang. Tried in Internet Explorer 8, Opera 12, Firefox. At the same time if user opens website from internet, it works. Opening webapp from the same host1 where Tomcat is running works normally. Local network is organized with D-Link DGS-3120-48TC switch. Additional info. During experiments we've noticed XP Tweaker installed on hosts. Network settings from that tool: MTU is manually set to 1500 RWIN = 14600 Support of TCP frames larger than 64 KB is on Time to Live = 32 SACK is on

• Google Chrome and kerberos authentication against Apache

  I've managed to get kerberos authentication to work now with Apache and Likewise Open but so far, Google Chrome doesn't seem to play fair. Unless I start it with chrome.exe --auth-server-whitelist="*company.com" it does only pop-up a login window but will not accept any credentials at all. As far as I know, the --auth-server-whitelist option should only be used when trying to get Single-Sign-On (SSO) to work, but if you are fine with a log-in window it should work directly out of the box, but so far it doesn't.   I want to make my ftp server over the internet i made it on Debian linux computer and i changed the port of it to 201 my local ip is 192.168.1.3 so i can access it from any computer on my network through ftp :// mylocalip:201 it appear to me the login page i login with my linux user and can see the files on my ftp server to make it public i make port mapping on my router for port 201 when i try ftp :// mypublicip:201 it give me the login page and when i entered the login data it is loading infinity without open my ftp server files when i made it over default port 21 it works fine. can any one tell me what is the problem here?

• Recover files after unsuccessful partitioning

  I wanted to install another Linux on my computer, so I tried to resize one of my NTFS partitions with Norton Partition Magic. It didn't complete successfully, showed some errors, said that the partition is not resized and that it's the same size like before. But when I rebooted my computer I couldn't open that partition anymore and I am also not able to mount it from Linux. So this is my question: I had very important data on that partition - can I recover it? I guess nothing's deleted; it's just something messed up so it's not usable, but can I get it back? Please reply if there's any possible way of doing this, thank you.

  In Windows. (I know I can open Desktop > Properties > Appearance > Advanced [and figure out which item determines it; probably Menu]. But, I don't want other things changed - just the bookmarks. This is because I have so many and I want more of them to display. I did see the question on changing font size of items in folder, on bookmarks toolbar, and sub-folders, etc; But, I'm talking sidebar on firefox, I don't have Google Chrome and I am not a developer.

  I have shared folder with an app on win 2008 server. After successful maping of this shared folder from other PC in local network can be open only text files and images. App (.exe) cannot be run. (App works fine, is runing on other server win 2003. Win 2008 is new instalation on new machine.) Is there extra setting to allow it? Loged as administrator Ganted all permission to account in sharing properties (read, write etc.)

  Hi all, here's my case, I have set up a share in a virtual windows server 2008 R2, the server is hosted by GoDaddy my question is, how do I access the server's public folders, I need to open a file locally (on the client) and to do that I need the server to show up in my Network locations, I have the right credentials and have created a special group that has access to the particular folder that I'm sharing the problem is I don't know how to add the server to my network locations. I have tried VPN Connection but it is my understanding that it cannot be done since it is virtual share server. Any help is trully appreciated.

• Facing gestures in Linux mint Chrome Browser

  I am using Linux mint OS since an Year , I use to consistently download updates and install , I use chrome as a default browser , when ever I open youtube and watch some video , I listen to some gestures in sound ( say repeated lyrics of song ) while it is playing , In firefox it is working fine . What is the problem am I missing any plugin , AFAIK Chrome doesn't need a flash player plug in , It has a built in flash player . IS that the problem ? And also previously I was not facing this , recently I started using Cinimon UI centOS after this all these kind of problems started MY hard ware is 64 bit intel core i3 and also I have installed linux mint 64 bit Please let me know what is the problem and how to fix this . • Is it safe to use an IDE to SATA power adapter for an extended period of time?

  I just bought a computer from HP and they failed to include SATA power connectors with the power supply other then the one HD and DVD drive. Meanwhile I have two IDE to SATA power adapters that came with my "USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE cable" http://www.amazon.com/USB-2-0-SATA-Cable-Adapter/dp/B001OORN06 3rd pic on the left. I was wondering if I would just open up my computer and use it to plug it my SATA drives to the IDE power sources and mount it to the motherboard, would it damage my drives in the long run or have any other significant effects. • Has ec2 made self-hosting possible for 'amateur' sysadmins possible?

  I'm a developer, and it seems ec2 has made it possible for a amateur sysadmin like me to setup and maintain a fairly large set of servers. Now I don't mean to undermine real sys admins, as I know the value of them but what I am trying to get at is that someone like me can setup and maintain a cluster of servers (front end web servers, with some db servers) using tools like ec2 and capistrano with the help of google. Now this isn't something I would do as a long term thing, but as a startup, one-man operation, I think I can pull this off until business takes off and I can hire this important role out. With ec2, I get my firewall, so I basically open up port 80 on my public facing server, which will run haproxy and route requests to my cluster of servers. Ofcourse I am simplifying the setup, but just want a feel for what you guys think about my perception. My application is a web application, that will be runing Ruby on rails (passenger) and talking to mysql or postgresql.

• Launch apps or run commands on Windows via shortcuts

  Is it possible to register shortcuts on Windows 7 so that regardless where you are looking (Desktop, a folder etc) the shortcut gets "heard" and the appropriate action is performed. For example, creating a shortcut in the System32 folder which will work if you use Run with the shortcut's name, will not work if you set a key combination when focus is set on the Desktop for example. Is there a native way of registering top-level shortcuts or even an application for enabling this? Example of things I want keyboard shortcuts for: open a specific folder like %path% create a new .js file in the current folder launch an application eventually with its path set to the current location if the app supports this (e.g. command prompt) Thank you.

• Make laptop boot to external monitor

  Hi all. Heres my setup: Dell 1737 2x Dell U2311H The laptop lid is always closed and is wall mounted behind the monitors. Every time i boot the laptop, i have to open the lid a little until it goes to the win 7 logon screen. Once there, i close the lid and both monitors get detected and the laptop screen switches off. As the laptop is wall mounted how ever, its really tedious to keep opening and closing the lid. Is there any way i can make it default to the external monitors permanently? Any suggestions are welcome, even hardware mods. Im willing to rip apart the laptop to install a switch or something if needs be lol

• How to list down hosts with nmap 5.51

  I was using nmap 5.21 with the -PN, -F and --reason flags in version 5.21. I was outputting the results to an XML file. It would list ALL hosts (say I gave it a /24 subnet to scan. I then updated to 5.51 and ran the exact same command, but it no longer lists down hosts, just ones that are up. Is there a new flag to list down hosts? OR did this get removed in 5.51? My full options are: -sS -n -PN -SV -F --reason I've also used and removed --open but it will not list down hosts in my XML output.

  I have one problem, I am unable to start windows 7 which is installed with Ubuntu 12.04 because I want to utilize all resource in diff. OS. Let me tell you the installation I have done. I have installed everything with USB because my CD ROM is damaged. 1) I have installed Windows 7 in c: then I have installed Ubuntu 12.04 in C: Now when I start my PC it shows list of OS first like -Ubuntu 12.04 -Windows 7 When I click on Windows 7 it do not starts and again shows the list of OS. I have also tried to reinstall the windows 7 using USB but it gives error of something UI or Boot configuration error. Even now Ubuntu 12.04 is also not reinstalling. Now what I want to do is install windows 7 and install ubuntu 12.04 in virtual box so that I can run both system as this is not working. But can't because I can't open Window 7 even can't format my drive. Please suggest something.

• Postfix configuration w.r.t. port 25

  After a considerable amount of research, I have configured my postfix server to use dovecot to accept SMTPS connections over port 465 and everything works swimmingly. Unfortunately, I forgot that, unless I listen to port 25, I'm not going to receive any e-mail from the net. I'm hoping somebody knows off the top of their head how to open up port 25 on Postfix for anonymous users, but disallow relaying and any other bad things on that port. And to leave the port 465 the way it is.
