• foobar.com working, but www.foobar.com not working?

  I am setting up a web site for a client. She is using GoDaddy for domain registration, and a hosting company I have never used before. After setting up the nameservers on GoDaddy's side, the address foobar.com (for example) is correctly directing to the new site. However, the address www.foobar.com is redirecting to a 404 page on the hosting company's side. I've been dealing with customer service on the hosting side, and they have told me various things including wait for DNS propagation (which has obviously happened since the 404 page is on their side), and to make sure that the nameservers on GoDaddy's side were entered in lower case instead of upper case (which I know doesn't matter since nameservers are case insensitive). I think I'm getting the runaround from the hosting company, but the client had signed up with them before I came to the project, so if possible I'd like to resolve this issue with them before we start treating it as a loss. Does anybody know what could cause foobar.com to resolve correctly but www.foobar.com to not resolve? How would I best be able to suggest a fix to this through the technical support channels of a hosting company?

• Hide icons encrypted file system partitions in Nautilus

  I've installed Ubuntu 10.04 from the alternate CD. It has an encrypted root and swap partition. The root partition is visible in Nautilus as 'File Syste' icon. There is another icon "216 GB Filesystem". If I click it says: Unable to mount 216 GB Filesystem. /dev/mapper/sda5_crypt is mounted. Then there is another icon "6.1 GB Swap Space". If I click it it says: Unable to mount 6.1 GB Swap Space. Not a mountable file system. How can I hide these last two icons? • Does anybody know of any resources to achieve this particular "2.5D" isometric engine effect?

  I understand this is a little vague, but I was hoping somebody might be able to describe a high-level workflow or link to a resource to be able to achieve a specific isometric "2.5D" tile engine effect. I fell in love with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Q6ISVaM5Ww this engine. Especially with the lighting and the shaders! He has a brief description of how he achieved what he did, but I could really use a brief flow of where you would start, what you would read up on and learn and the logical order to implement these things. A few specific questions: 1) Is there a heightmap on the ground texture that lets the light reflect brighter on certain parts of it? 2) "..using a special material which calculates the world-space normal vectors of every pixel.." - is this some "magic" special material he has created himself, or can you hazard a guess at what he means? 3) with relation to the above quote - what does he mean by 'world-space normal vectors of every pixel'? 4) I'm guessing I'm being a little bit optimistic when I ask if there's any 'all-in-one' tutorial out there? :)

  Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 12.1.1.2.2 introduces new support for GlassFish 4.0, the reference implementation of Java EE7.  Getting started with GlassFish 4.0 in Eclipse couldn't be easier. Follow these short steps to get GlassFish 4.0 setup so you can start developing, deploying, and debugging your Java EE7 applications. Prerequisites GlassFish 4.0 Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse 12.1.1.2.2+ from OTN or Eclipse Marketplace Setting up the server connection In the Servers view, click to add a New > Server . Select GlassFish 4.0 from the list of supported server configurations. Pick your GlassFish installation directory (usually <glassfish 4>/glassfish) and select your domain. After you click Finish you should now be setup to launch Glassfish 4.0 in normal and debug mode within Eclipse as well as associate projects for deployment through the Add and Remove wizard. Using GlassFish tools in Eclipse GlassFish server tools provide some useful information about your running GlassFish 4.0 environment. Resources displays current resources deployed in the domain including your JDBC Connection Pool and JDBC Resource names. I find this extra bit of information useful when working with JPA. Deployed Applications shows the current active deployments in GlassFish which can be undeployed as needed from within Eclipse. Deployed Web Services provides information about SOAP-based web services deployed in this domain. Also with the running server are quick launch links to open the Administrative Console, Server Logs, and the GlassFish Community Site all within Eclipse's embedded browser.

• libgdx actors and instant actions

  I'm having trouble with actors and actions. I have a list of actors, they all have either no action, or 1 sequence action This sequence action has either : a couple of actions (some are instant, some have duration 0) a couple of actions followed by a parallel action. My problem is the following: some of the instant actions are used to set the position and the alpha of the actor. So when one of the action is "move to x,y and set alpha to 0" the actor is visible for one frame at position 0,0 , move instantly to x,y for the next frame, and then disappears. Though this behaviours is to be expected, I want to avoid it. How can I achieve that? I tried to intercept the actions before I put actors in the stage but I need the stage width/height for some actions. So something like : Action actionSequence = actor.getActions().get(0); Array<Action> actions = ((SequenceAction) actionSequence).getActions(); for(Action act : actions){ if(act.act(0)) System.out.println("action " + act.toString() + " successfully run"); else System.out.println("action " + act.toString() + " wasn't instant"); } won't work. It gets even more complicated when an actor can also have a repeat action in stead of the sequence action (because you have to only run the actions that have duration 0 once without repeat, and then start the repeat). Any help is appreciated.

• What would you do if you were asked to recommend on someone you are not professionally satisfied with?

  Where I live, everyone in the IT business knows just about everyone else. This is why it is quite common here to get a phone call from a recruiter asking for your professional opinion regarding people you've been working with in the past, or to be asked by a friend for a recommendation. This is all nice and well until you are asked to recommend on someone you weren't quite satisfied with professionally. There are several problems I can think about: Recommending on unskilled people is generally inadvisable. It is unprofessional and hurts your reputation. Giving this person a bad recommendation will probably hurt his chances of getting the job, and refusing to recommend on someone is just as bad as giving a bad recommendation. It may be that the new employer will be happy with this person's skills, is it fair to deny this guy of the chance to start a new page and prove himself in a new place? Many times you really like this person and are very uncomfortable with the idea of giving him a bad recommendation or refusing his request to recommend on him. • Pausing and Resuming the jQuery / ASP.NET News Ticker

  Many websites display a news ticker of one sort or another. A news ticker is a user interface element that displays a subset of a list of items, cycling through them one at a time after a set interval. In December 2010 I wrote an article titled Use jQuery and ASP.NET to Build a News Ticker that explored how to create your own news ticker widget using jQuery and ASP.NET. The news ticker's content is defined as an unordered list (<ul>) where each list item (<li>) represents a news headline. Once the ticker's content is defined, having it cycle through the head lines is as simple as calling the JavaScript function startTicker(id, numberToShow, duration), which begins cycling the headlines in the unordered list with the specified id, showing numberToShow headlines at a time and cycling to the next headline every duration number of milliseconds. This installment shows how to enhance the news ticker to enable pausing and resuming. With these enhancements, the ticker can be configured to automatically pause rotating its headlines when the user mouses over it, and to resume rotating them once the user mouses out. Similarly, with a bit of additional markup and script you can add pause and play buttons to a ticker, allowing a user to start and stop the ticker by clicking an image or button. • Is there an excuse for short variable names?

  This has become a large frustration with the codebase I'm currently working in; many of our variable names are short and undescriptive. I'm the only developer left on the project, and there isn't documentation as to what most of them do, so I have to spend extra time tracking down what they represent. For example, I was reading over some code that updates the definition of an optical surface. The variables set at the start were as follows: double dR, dCV, dK, dDin, dDout, dRin, dRout dR = Convert.ToDouble(_tblAsphere.Rows[0].ItemArray.GetValue(1)); dCV = convert.ToDouble(_tblAsphere.Rows[1].ItemArray.GetValue(1)); ... and so on Maybe it's just me, but it told me essentially nothing about what they represented, which made understanding the code further down difficult. All I knew was that it was a variable parsed out specific row from a specific table, somewhere. After some searching, I found out what they meant: dR = radius dCV = curvature dK = conic constant dDin = inner aperture dDout = outer aperture dRin = inner radius dRout = outer radius I renamed them to essentially what I have up there. It lengthens some lines, but I feel like that's a fair trade off. This kind of naming scheme is used throughout a lot of the code however. I'm not sure if it's an artifact from developers who learned by working with older systems, or if there's a deeper reason behind it. Is there a good reason to name variables this way, or am I justified in updating them to more descriptive names as I come across them?

• Sitecore Item Web API and Json.Net Test Drive (Part II –Strongly Typed)

  In the earlier post I did related to this topic, I have talked about using Json.Net to consume the result of Sitecore Item Web API. In that post, I have used the keyword dynamic to express my intention of consuming the returned json of the API. In this article, I will create some useful classes to write our implementation of consuming the API using strongly-typed. We will start of with the Record class which will hold the top most elements the API will present us. Pretty straight forward class. It has 2 properties to hold the statuscode and the result elements. If you intend to use a different property name in your class from the json property, you can do so by passing a string literal of the json property name to the JsonProperty attribute and name your class property differently. If you look at the earlier post, you will notice that the API returns an array of items that contains all of the Sitecore content item or items and stores them under the result->items array element. To be able to map that array of items, we have to write a collection property and decorate that with the JsonProperty attribute. The JsonItem class is a simple class which will map to the corresponding item property contained in the array. If you notice, these properties are just the basic Sitecore fields. And here’s the main portion of this post that will binds them all together. And here’s the output of this code. In closing, the same result can be achieved using the dynamic keyword or defining classes to map the json propery returned by the Sitecore Item Web API. With a little bit more of coding, you can take advantage of power of strongly-typed solution. Have a good week ahead of you.

• Gparted funkiness - won't recognize 1TB, full-hdd /home partition, but recognizes ext4 and /home label

  I have a 1TB SATA hard disk from my old desktop, and the entire thing is an ext4 /home partition (/, /boot, and swap were all on another hdd). It is now in a USB2 enclosure and I want to use it to back up my current laptop /home. To do this I need to shrink the /home partition on the 1TB backup drive. It only uses about 500GB so that shouldn't be a problem, I'll start the laptop with an Ubuntu live USB, plug in the 1TB drive, and use Gparted to shrink the 1TB /home partition to ~500GB. Then I can create a second partition in the newly freed space, and cp -ax my laptop's /home over to it. Unfortuntely, Ubuntu Live USB can detect and mount the external hdd, and Gparted can see it's there, but Gparted can't read it and hence can't resize it. Disk Utility reports the drive is fine, no errors, so I'm not sure what's the problem. See linked pics, worth a thousand words. Anyone know what the problem is here? Any pointers in the right direction much appreciated.

  The Contacts app on OS X isn’t very interesting, but if you can use it to display your Gmail contacts, it’ll get a little bit better. Luckily it’s pretty easy to add your Google / Gmail contacts, but you’ll have to click the mouse a few times and maybe poke at the old keyboard once or twice to type in your email address and password. It’s worth noting that if you set up Gmail in the Mail app you shouldn’t have to do this. Since we prefer Gmail in a browser, that’s why we’re writing this. Or just because we’re procrastinating the book editing that we’re supposed to be doing. Don’t judge. Start by opening the Preferences for the Contacts app by heading up to the Menu bar. Go to Accounts and then click the + sign to add a new one. Choose CardDAV for the account type, use your Gmail username and password, and put google.com as the server address. If you are using two-factor authentication, you’ll need to create a specific password for this account.

It works perfectly on XP, other laptop but not working on Ubuntu 11.10 How can I install the driver for this? I have tried many things But nothing is working.   I am new to JME3 game engine but I know Android XML GUI layouts pretty good. I have a simple layout here and I cant figure out what is wrong. • Windows 8 BIOS - Boot Ubuntu from External HDD

  My laptop came pre-loaded with Windows 8 64-bit (only storage device is a 128 GB SSD). Since it is my school laptop/I've heard creating a Linux partition alongside Windows 8 is not very wise I installed Ubuntu onto my external hard drive. I have a 500GB external HDD with the following partitions: Main Partition - NFTS - ~400 GB Extension Partition / - ext2 - ~25gb /home - ext2 - ~30gb swap - ext2 - 10gb /boot - ? - 10gb ? = not sure of partition Using the PenDriveLinux installer, I created a LiveUSB version of Ubuntu 12.04 (LTS) on a 4GB USB drive. Using that, I installed Ubuntu onto the external hard-drive, without any errors (or at least none that I was notified of). Using the BIOS settings, I changed the OS-loading order so that it is in this order: My External USB HDD Windows Boot Loader Some other things Therefore, Ubuntu should load from my hard drive first, but it doesn't. Also, my hard drive is in working condition, and it turns on when BIOS starts (there is a light indicator). When I start my laptop, it goes directly to Windows 8 (I have the fast startup setting disabled as well). So, is there any way for me to set it up so that when my HDD is connected, it will automatically load Ubuntu? Thanks in advance!

• Demantra Implementation Tip Windows and Unix or Linux

  Hello!  Are you implementing using a third party or consulting resources?   Recently we have seen some cases where customers no longer have a windows installation.  After the initial install and configuration, once the instance has gone live, the windows install is either deleted or most likely no longer with the customer as the same was installed on the implementers' laptop to start with. As a result when support comes back requesting the customer to apply a patch and/or upgrade they do not have a windows installation.  This has started happening after Oracle Demantra gave them the option to configure the engine on Unix.  Workaround: It is advisable that the customer keep their Windows installation intact for further patching and/or upgrade.  It is aslo possible that the implementer had installed Demantra on his Windows box and you do not have access to it any more.  It is possible that with the web and engine on Unix, and the silent installer having downloaded all the executable for Business Modeler, to work on the User's client machine, you may no longer need the windows install. I have not tested the above

• Directory error when trying to create a new user

  I added a second user 'shirley' in Settings - User Accounts, and set a password. The account type is Standard. In 11.04, this worked and I logged in and had a functioning desktop for this user. How is this done in 11.10? When I try to log in as this user I have this error: Nautilus could not create the required folder "/home/shirley/.config/nautilus". Before running Nautilus, please create the following folder, or set permissions such that Nautilus can create it. The only option then is to click OK, this dumps me out to full-screen Nautilus, like this: There is no launcher or visible way to start any programs. Print screen doesn't take a screengrab. The desktop is similar to this question but I get no terminal when I press CTRL+ALT+T. I have to press CTRL+ALT+F2 and restart from the terminal to get out of this. This answer is to install gnome-system-tools. Shouldn't I be able to add a second user with the default install? EDIT: I tried the deluser+adduser suggestion, there was no change after trying it. Here is what I got: tom@desktop:~$ sudo deluser shirley [sudo] password for tom: Removing user `shirley' ... Warning: group `shirley' has no more members. Done tom@desktop:~$ sudo adduser shirley Adding user `shirley' ... • New Feature! Automatic Categories for Geekswithblogs.net

  One of the features we have been working on is a way to categorize posts without the need of all our bloggers getting on the same page with what categories we have and making them select the categories.  Johnny Kauffman, one of our team members at AJI Software, developed what we call the Sherlock Project over the past few months.  Sherlock is a category suggestion engine based on the content within the posts.  Now, after a post is published, Sherlock will investigate the content and come up with the suggested categories that content fits in.  This will now allow you to go to the specific topics you are interested in and see all the related posts. This is just the beginning, so many more opportunities will arise now that we have our content organized.  One of the first features I will be adding is RSS feeds for each category and sub category.  If you are into ALM, we will have a feed for that! • Rhythmbox in Unity: sometimes cannot access GUI if run from command line, no command line support for .m3u/ .pls

  I previously was using Rhythmbox in 10.04 and recently installed it (version 2.90.1) in my system now running 11.10. I've discovered the following issues: Sometimes if I start Rhythmbox from the command line e.g. rhythmbox [uri of radio station], the GUI does not appear although I get the audio stream and I am not able to access the GUI when I click on the icon in the Unity launcher. Previously in 10.04, I was able to access the GUI after starting from command line by clicking the icon in the notification tray but it no longer appears there. Sometimes after running Rhythmbox from command line, when I click on the icon in the Unity launcher the GUI does not appear (even though I am clicking with the middle button on my mouse) and an icon-sized space appears under the Rhythmbox icon in the launcher. When I right click this space, I get a menu with a blank line followed by "Keep in launcher". Although I can play the uri's linking to .m3u and .pls files for radio streams in the GUI, they do not work in the command line. Instead I have to download the .m3u & .pls files to get the uri inside those files and use that as the argument instead when running from command line. Is there any way to fix these issues?

• What would be a good filter to create 'magnetic deformers' from a depth map?

  In my project, I am creating a system for deforming a highly detailed mesh (clothing) so that it 'fits' a convex mesh. To do this I use depth maps of the item and the 'hull' to determine at what point in world space the deviation occurs and the extent. Simply transforming all occluded vertices to the depths as defined by the 'hull' is fairly effective, and has good performance, but it suffers the problem of not preserving the features of the mesh and requires extensive culling to avoid false-positives. I would like instead to generate from the depth deviation map a set of simple 'deformers' which will 'push'* all vertices of the deformed mesh outwards (in world space). This way, all features of the mesh are preserved and there is no need to have complex heuristics to cull inappropriate vertices. I am not sure how to go about generating this deformer set however. I am imagining something like an algorithm that attempts to match a spherical surface to each patch of contiguous deviations within a certain range, but do not know where to start doing this. Can anyone suggest a suitable filter or algorithm for generating deformers? Or to put it another way 'compressing' a depth map? (*Push because its fitting to a convex 'bulgy' humanoid so transforms are likely to be 'spherical' from the POV of the surface.)

• GNOME session not starting after filesystem corruption

  I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop edition. Suddenly today /home became corrupted and I was prompted to run fsck manually. I ran fsck -y /home and rebooted the system. The system booted but I got no GUI interface (GNOME session) but a black screen with a user prompt instead. Any tricks here to start my system normally? Any help is greatly appreciated.
