• Still can't mount windows 8 drive after restart

  After following the instructions in other posts, I am still getting the same error when I try to mount my Windows 8 drive in Ubuntu 14.04 on a dual boot system. I have disabled fast start after shutdown, hybrid hibernation, and the preinstalled Asus Instant On service. I have tried restarting Windows rather than shutting down. In all cases I get the same error message, namely: Error mounting /dev/sda4 at /media/jesse/OS: Command-line `mount -t "ntfs" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,dmask=0077,fmask=0177" "/dev/sda4" "/media/jesse/OS"' exited with non-zero exit status 14: Windows is hibernated, refused to mount. Failed to mount '/dev/sda4': Operation not permitted The NTFS partition is in an unsafe state. Please resume and shutdown Windows fully (no hibernation or fast restarting), or mount the volume read-only with the 'ro' mount option. I did not have the same issue before upgrading from Ubuntu 12 to 14. For what it's worth my computer is supposedly a "hybrid" with an SSD drive installed, although I can't see that the SSD drive is being used at all with my present settings. Any thoughts?

• Simple Interactive Search with jQuery and ASP.Net MVC

  Google now has a feature where the search updates as you type in the search box.  You can implement the same feature in your MVC site with a little jQuery and MVC Ajax.  Here's how: Create a javascript global variable to hold the previous value of your search box. Use setTimeout to check to see if the search box has changed after some interval.  (Note: Don't use setInterval since we don't want to have to turn the timer off while Ajax is processing.) Submit the form if the value is changed. Set the update target to display your results. Set the on success callback to "start" the timer again.  This, along with step 2 above will make sure that you don't sent multipe requests until the initial request has finished processing. • GRUB2 not working after installing xubuntu 14.04

  I have a vaio laptop and it used to have installed windows 8 and Xubuntu 13.04 in dual boot, everything was working fine. I decided to update my version of xubuntu 14.04 LTS mainly because the support for 13.04 is finished and LTS version have 3 years of support. What I did was to format the partition where xubuntu 13.04 was installed and install 14.04 in that formated partition. When I restarted my computer willing to start using my new system I got the following message: error: symbol 'grub_term_highlight_color' not found and I was not able to enter any OS. I tried boot-repair from live USB more than two times and it did not fix the problem. I tried to enter to my computer using super GRUB2 disk, however it does not apperar to work with UEFI active (besides super grub2 disk says it can) I only get the message "no operating system found". If I boot super grub2 disk with UEFI disabled, super grub2 disk can not detect any OS,I also tried Rescatux distro, however, as of super grub2 disk, rescatux cannot enter when UEFI is active. I tried boot-repair with the option of "restore EFI backups", after that I was able to boot on windows, but no grub menu appeared. • Do you tend to write your own name or your company name in your code?

  I've been working on various projects at home and at work, and over the years I've developed two main APIs that I use in almost all AJAX based websites. I've compiled both of these into DLLs and called the namespaces Connell.Database and Connell.Json. My boss recently saw these namespaces in a software documentation for a project for the company and said I shouldn't be using my own name in the code. (But it's my code!) One thing to bear in mind is that we're not a software company. We're an IT support company, and I'm the only full-time software developer here, so there's not really any procedures on how we should write software in the company. Another thing to bear in mind is that I do intend on one day releasing these DLLs as open-source projects. How do other developers group their namespaces within their company? Does anyone use the same class libraries in personal and in work projects? Also does this work the other way round? If I write a class library entirely at work, who owns that code? If I've seen the library through from start to finish, designed it and programmed it. Can I use that for another project at home? Thanks, Update I've spoken to my boss about this issue and he agrees that they're my objects and he's fine for me to open-source them. Before this conversation I started changing the objects anyway, which was actually quite productive and the code now suits this specific project more-so than it did previously. • How long does it take to delete a Google Apps for Domain account and allow recreation?

  Basically, I set up a Google Apps for domain account for one of my clients but upon trying to upload a CSV of users, only half were created and then I kept getting time outs, 404's and other errors which I never saw when setting up another client. I was not sure how, but thought I may have caused an error or there was an error Google Side when the account was created so I thought it may be best to delete the domain and start from scratch. Little did I know, you had to wait to recreate the domain! As far as I can tell from what I have read, there is five days to delete and allow recreation of similar user names, however, I can't see anything that shows how long you have to wait for the domain account. It has now been 5/6 days and I can't recreate it. The cancellation email I got shows "...If at any time you would like to sign-up for Google Apps for this or another domain, you can do so by visiting..." But it does not mention how long!!! I tried emailing Google directly but got no response. Does anyone know?

• Facebook Like javascript related to Time Spent Downloading a page Increase in GWT?

  Hi, I installed the Facebook Like button Javascript version on my website on December 15th. Take a look at this report from Google Webmaster Central. Crawl stats Googlebot activity in the last 90 days The crawl stats are from Googlebot which as far as I know doesn't execute Javascript. Could the Facebook Like Javascript code, "The XFBML version" be related to large spike in Time spent downloading a page? (By the way the huge spike in November was caused by a mistake where every image request was getting a 301.) I'm not sure what caused the spike to go down by half somewhere in December. It may have been related to a faulty setting in web.config. I'm at a loss as to what I can do about this or even how to tell if this is my problem or Googlebots crawl problem. Here is the Facebook code I am using to create the like button. • How to get started in coding for JBoss

  I have an idea on how to revamp our internal application, after having accessed the needs of the users, addressing thier current issues, and the like. But I am not a coder. My last application I wrote was in college, in C, (java wasn't invented-ish!) and it was a booking system, with the option to add on other modules, blah blah. I got an A, but I became a system administrator instead, more intrested in designing and maintainend networks and infrastructure, but with the advent of virtualisation, and linux management tools such as puppet I can now manage infrastructure in my sleep! Now I want to write code - to put on my infastructure, and I want to build .... a booking system! This is just to get experience, but I am at a loss as to where to start. Setting up the environment, will take me about a day. Writing the spec, even how I want it to work, I already know, but as for actually coding in a decent manner, I can only guess. If anyone can recommend a book, website, blog, twitter person to follow, or just advice on how to build a kick butt basic jboss app, then please, "I AM READY TO LEARN" :)

• Some info about SD card patitions after the use of the dd statment and some oiters doubts?

  I am not very experienced using Linux and I have the following situation that cause me some doubts. I have wrote RaspBian (the RaspBerry linux distribution) on an SD card using Ubuntu dd statment: sudo dd if=2014-01-07-wheezy-raspbian.img of=/dev/sdb bs=1024 So if now I perform the fdisk -l statment I obtain that I have 2 partitions related to my SD card, that are the followins: Dispositivo Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 8192 122879 57344 c W95 FAT32 (LBA) /dev/sdb2 122880 5785599 2831360 83 Linux And now the first doubt: the dd statment create on the SD card two partitions: 1) /dev/sdb1 that is a litle FAT32 partition (what it means (LBA)?) 2) /dev/sdb2 that is a larger Linux ext3 partition Ok...the doubt is: why it also create to me a FAT32 partition and not only a Linux ext3 partition? Ok...if I go into my computer resource I can see a device (related to my SD card) into the devices list that contains some RaspBian file, following a screenshot: And if I see the property of this device I obtain this: So, looking at the previous screenshot it seems to me that this is the small FAT32 partition, and now I have the followings doubts: If it is the smallest FAT32 partition, what contains? The RaspBian boot or what? Why, in the devices list, I have only the FAT32 partition and not also the Linux one (/dev/sdb2), to see it have I to mount it? how? Tnx

  i just now start to use Xubuntu, and i install Xubuntu on my second laptop i had in my garage, just for put back in use. On the ASUS xubuntu work really perfect but now after i put on my old laptop i have some little proble. My Laptop old is a Fujitsu Siemens AMILO L7310GW, i explain my problem: The installation works fine, everything is quite good but there are few little problem i have a know idea, how I can fix them... so USB: i have a optical mouse usb and works quite strage, when i tip on terminal "lsusb" the system recognized fine my mouse but the strange thing is the mouse it move like jump around the desktop. what i had done: - update the usbdrive - change mouse - tried mouse on different pc and on both they work fine another problem i don't know where came from: when i take off my mouse, and try to put back doesn't work at all, if i want back i have to restart the OS. and no usb pen or other ar working so for that i think is usb problem. i can tell before Xubuntu whit winXP the usb work fine, but i don't want windows anymore... So i tried almost everything you can find on the net, maybe i have done something wrong so please help me. I tried also to install the new version 12.04, but i came back for the 11.10.

• thick client migration to web based application

  This query is related to application design the technology that I should consider during migration. The Scenario: I have a C#.net Winform application which communicates with a device. One of the main feature of this application is monitoring cyclic data(rate 200ms) sent from the device to the application. The request to start the cyclic data is sent only once in the beginning and then the application starts receiving data from the device until it sends a stop request. Now this same application needs to be deployed over the web in a intranet. The application is composed of a business logic layer and a communication layer which communicates with the device through UDP ports. I am trying to look at a solution which will allow me to have a single instance of the application on the server so that the device thinks that it is connected as usual and then from the business logic layer I can manage the clients. I want to reuse the code of the business layer and the communication layer as much as possible. Please let me know if webserives/WCF/ etc what i should consider to design the migration. • Update kernel patch for VMware Player 4.0.3

  As I stated some days ago, after upgrading to Ubuntu Precise Pangolin, aka 12.04 LTS, I had a minor obstacle with VMware products. Today, VMware offered to upgrade to Player 4.0.3 due to security-related reasons. Initially, I thought that this update might have the patch for kernel 3.2.0 integrated but sadly that is not the case. 'Hacking' the kernel patch My first intuitive try to run the existing patch against the sources of VMware Player 4.0.3 failed, as the patch by Stefano Angeleri (weltall) is originally written explicitely against Workstation 8.0.2 and Player 4.0.2. But this is nothing to worry about seriously. Just fire up your favourite editor of choice and modify the version signature for VMware Player, like so: nano patch-modules_3.2.0.sh And update line 8 for the new version: plreqver=4.0.3 Save the shell script and run it as super-user (root): sudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh In case that you previously patched your VMware sources you have to remove some artifacts beforehand. Otherwise, the patch script will inform you like so: /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patched found. You have already patched your sources. Exiting In that case, simply remove the 'hidden' file and run the shell script again: sudo rm /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source/.patchedsudo ./patch-modules_3.2.0.sh To finalise your installation either restart the vmware service or reboot your machine. On first start VMware will present you their EULA which you have to accept, and everything gets back to normal operation mode. Currently, I would assume that in case of VMware Workstation 8.0.3 you can follow the same steps as just described.

• How do I debug an overheating problem?

  Hello guys. I have a problem with my Laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 Core i5 4GB Ram VGA ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4300 running Ubuntu 10.10 32bit). It shuts down abruptly without even a lag in the application I am working with before shutdown. I think it's overheating problem. Actually the laptop is hot all the time when I am running Ubuntu. When I switch back to windows, even with intense load it won't shutdown or show any problem as long as I keep proper ventilation (when the air openings are blocked it does the same). Actually on Ubuntu i don't usually do things that need much CPU power, usually surfing internet, coding web pages and sometimes playing with python and ruby. I am not enabling desktop effects so no GPU load except the normal GNOME gui. Now as I am writing the Processor load in the panel monitor applet is 0%, Memory 11% by programs, 22% by cache. And i have CPU Frequency monitor for each of the 4 cores set to 1.20 Ghz (the lowest possible value, i am not sure if this applet does really limit CPU usage). Running sensors in terminal gave me temp1: +26.8°C (crit = +100.0°C) temp2: +0.0°C (crit = +100.0°C) hddtemp /dev/sda at the terminal gave me /dev/sda: WDC WD3200BEVT-75ZCT2: 46°C All that fine but the laptop is Really hot i can feel it in the keyboard, mouse pad is painful to touch, and the fan is always spinning. I am also placing 2 small fans running on USB under the laptop right now and the laptop is lifted over the fans so it's well ventilated. When I am running windows it doesn't get that hot except when there is a really big load on the CPU and this is keeping me away from using Linux for everyday tasks. Actually I don't care much for speed as I can deal with low speed it's not going to shutdown abruptly. So please if you can help me and tell me what are the possible causes, where should I start ?

• Ubuntu crashes with menu bar launcher freeze during software centre use

  I recently reinstalled Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on a Dell Studio 1588 64-bit and ran into crashes as I was installing some software on the software centre. Before this, I had display/screen problems that I needed to fix so I will briefly describe that in case it has any connection to the crashes. The problem was of screen crash/flickering (related to ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5400x) when trying to adjust brightness and so I followed guidance from an earlier chain (question 131967) to (a) use jockey to install fglrx update driver (deactivate experimental beta driver) and (b) edit grub to add acpi_backlight=vendor dell_laptop.backlight=0 The crashes that happened (twice, while software centre was just finishing installation in the background) was that all tabs (on open Firefox window) stayed open along with cursor control with mousepad but all menu bars disappeared completely along with the launcher and the keyboard also turned unresponsive. So there seemed to be no way to close windows or shut down the computer except for a forced hard shut down of the system using the start button. This is very similar to Questions #167540 and #298843, which seem to be closed. Why is this happening? Is there some update or fix I need to make? Thanks!

• How to schedule time-of-day upgrades

  Hello, I'm responsible for about 30 Ubuntu computers at a private K-8 school. We have only a 3Mbps internet connection serving the entire campus, and I would like to ensure that updates are done in the middle of the night - so that daytime tasks are not slowed down. I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and have set all computers to download and install security updates via the update manager. I have also installed cron-apt, and modified the config file to stagger the start times of the upgrades from about 10pm to 4am local time. HOWEVER - this morning I arrived at the school at 7:30am and all the computers were busy downloading a large security based update. Needless to say, all internet activity was slowed to a crawl (for the next 2 hours), and the computer users were very very upset. This was the event I'm trying so hard to prevent. It seems that my scheme to ensure middle of the night downloads failed, and I'm not sure why. I've also tried some schemes using unattended-upgrades & crontab, but there always seemed to be something scheduling upgrades to occur in addition to the ones I try to force at middle of the night. Is there a sure fire way to absolutely positively guarantee that updates will occur only at one specific time? It would be nice if the update manager just had a drop down menu to specify a designated time. Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

• Why has my internet speed dropped down?

  I recently switched to Ubuntu. I've been having a lot of internet troubles ever since. I used Windows 7 before. I've had trouble loading web pages, and it would take a solid minute or two to even start displaying anything. Why is this? How can I fix this? • How should we deal with multiple transaction-report requests?

  We are developing a system for the retail market which one of it's features will enable clients(actually consumer clubs) to go through all transactions made by end-clients. One of the ways to get this information will be via an API. The idea is that there will be requests for reports with a start date and an end date, and a response will have all the transactions between those dates. We are worry that some reports may be very large, and that some clients will repeatedly request for reports, in this case the DB and CPU will be very overloaded. The same server that will service those requests, also takes care the the actual retail transactions (received by proprietary devices) and a Web application. We are not sure about how to limit the report requests from the API so that it won't affect the system too much. So, how should we deal with this scenario? any thoughts? EDIT: just to make clear: When I mentioned proprietary devices I meant "On-Location" devices which are used during sales with end-clients, this means that these requests shouldn't get delayed, and this is the main concern.

• My internet connection slows or dies unexpectedly

  I installed Ubuntu 10.04 once again and I'm having some problems which I had before, but I have no idea how I solved them. On Windows, everything's working fine and I had no problems with this. My problem is that sometimes, when browsing through the internet, webpages just start to load really slow, sometimes it doesn't load anything at all (Error 118 (net::ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT): The operation timed out.) and it starts to work after few minutes. My IPv4 settings are automatic (DHCP), and IPv6 settings are Ignored/Disabled. I think my previous problems had something to do with IPv6, but I'm not sure. • How to effectively design a piece of software

  Im a compsci student and ive got some experience in various languages and paradigms c/java/python/ruby/html/css/scheme/sql/asp(classic). I realise that i want to have some software in my portfolio for future job hunting even tho i still have 2 years left of my education. Ive got a pretty good idea of what i want to make, its a webapp. Most shops around here are either .net or java and since i know java best and dont have access to ms developer tools im thinking i should go with java. Even tho i feel i know the principles of OOP pretty good ive got no clue how to go from my idea to a working solution. Where can i access information about designing the underlying architechture of my solution? Also i would like to know what other technologies i should train on, my current list includes javascript(and possibly a javascript library) some sort of java web framework tips are appreciated. I would like to add support for android/iphone apps in the future and this is something i have to take into account when designing the app. I have done a course on software engineering but i found this to be more centered around project management ideas then the actual design and implementation. So i would like tips on technologies i should focus on to get the most out of my time without the massive overhead of huge config processes but at the same time keep my project viable in a business sense, so that i use technologies that are relevant for business (java developer jobs). And i would also like tips on where i can learn more about the design process around a software project, i will be working mostly alone. But i find the approach ive used up until now (start coding and figure it out as you go) wont suffice.

• Unit testing and Test Driven Development questions

  I'm working on an ASP.NET MVC website which performs relatively complex calculations as one of its functions. This functionality was developed some time ago (before I started working on the website) and defects have occurred whereby the calculations are not being calculated properly (basically these calculations are applied to each user which has certain flags on their record etc). Note; these defects have only been observed by users thus far, and not yet investigated in code while debugging. My questions are: Because the existing unit tests all pass and therefore do not indicate that the defects that have been reported exist; does this suggest the original code that was implemented is incorrect? i.e either the requirements were incorrect and were coded accordingly or just not coded as they were supposed to be coded? If I use the TDD approach, would I disgregard the existing unit tests as they don't show there are any problems with the calculations functionality - and I start by making some failing unit tests which test/prove there are these problems occuring, and then add code to make them pass? Note; if it's simply a bug that is occurring that can be found while debugging the code, do the unit tests need to be updated since they are already passing?

• Problems syncing photos and strange effects of uploaded files from other devices

  I have a Galaxy Spica (GT-i5700) Android v2.1, rooted with Leshak dev 7 #123. But never mind the root info, the problem would be the same unrooted. The photos from this phone is stored in "sdcard/images", nevertheless the phone also creates a "sdcard/DCIM" but only stores some thumbnails there. Problem nr 1: U1 only reads the DCIM-folder for automatic photo-upload. So photos stored in this phone is not uploaded. If I move photos to "DCIM" folder, U1 recognises the photos and start uploading them. Possible solution: Could there be an option in the settings, to set preferred photo folder? Problem nr 2: Out of 74 pictures, 12 did not get uploaded. Pressing "Retry failed transfers" in Settings does nothing. Pressing the files where status is "Upload failed, tap to retry" only changes the status to "Uploading..." but nothing gets uploaded. If I upload another file to U1, it is uploaded directly without any problem. It has nothing to do with file size, 1,1 MB files has been uploaded fine whilst some failed are 0,8 MB. Problem nr 3: The photos from DCIM are in my case uploaded to a folder called "Pictures - GT-I5700" in U1. If I log in to the homepage and from there upload another photo in "Pictures - GT-I5700", it shows up in U1 on my phone fine. But when I tap it, U1 downloads the photo to "sdcard/U1/Pictures - GT-I5700". If it sync photos from "sdcard/DCIM" to a specific folder, why not also download files to the same folder from which it is synced? After a while of usage, syncing and uploading files from different clients it would be a mishmash of folders and places files are stored and considering that I see no use of U1 at all. Another question: If my SD card in some way breaks down/some folders cannot be read/card temporarly changed and U1 is running, does U1 consider that as files deleted and also delete from the cloud?

• license and copyright assignment

  I'm currently working on a wordpress plugin. My client gives me a specs doc (a powerpoint presentation, if you can call that a specs doc), and I code the requested functionality. Every time I send him code every file containing code starts with these lines: Author: My Name Copyright: The_client's_company.com License: MIT Expat (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expat_License) My intention being giving my client complete right to relicense and distribute the code under any other license (as the TOS of the freelancing website requires, plus I know he intends to sell it under a proprietary license), but at the same time giving myself the right to expand and redistribute the plugin under MIT license if I wish to (not that I do). The reason is I am paid only 10USD/hour (this is my first gig) so I want to at least keep the right to reuse parts of the code in other projects or expand it if I want to start a similar project myself when I finish the contract (unlikely, but who knows...) or show it to potential employees. The contract we agreed upon doesn't include any licensing specifications but I've informed him on the emails we've interchanged that although all my work is licensed by default as MIT I'm giving my clients the copyright of the code I produce so they can relicense it at will before distribution. Is this the correct way of achieving that?
