  • Odd compiler error on if-clause without braces

    The following Java code is throwing a compiler error: if ( checkGameTitle(currGame) ) ArrayList<String> items = parseColumns( tRows.get(rowOffset+1), currGame, time, method ); checkGameTitle is a public static function, returning a boolean. The errors are all of the type "cannot find symbol" with the symbols being variable ArrayList, variable String and variable items. However, if I add {curly braces} then the code compiles with no errors. Why might this be? Is there some ambiguity on the if clause without them?

  • Having trouble getting MEF imports to be resolved

    This is sort of a continuation of one of my earlier posts, which involves the resolving of modules in my WPF application. This question is specifically related to the effect of interdependencies of modules and the method of constructing those modules (i.e. via MEF or through new) on MEF's ability to resolve relationships. I then used an [Import] to try to get MEF to resolve that for me. Can anyone explain how the two ways I have approached MEF here are flawed? I have been in the dark for so long that instead of reading about MEF and trying different suggestions, I've added MEF to my solution and am stepping into the code. The part where it looks like it fails is when it calls partManager.GetSavedImport(). For some reason, the importCache is null, which I don't understand. All the way up to this point, it's been looking at the part (Window1) and trying to resolve two imported interfaces -- IError and IPlugin. I would have expected it to enter code that looks at other assemblies in the same executable folder, and then check it for exports so that it knows how to resolve the imports...

    I have a handler consuming the keyDown event of a WinForms RTB, that has the following code: GetTextAtLoc(RTB->SelectionStart); // selects some text at the caret's position RTB->SelectedText = "SomeOfMyOwn"; GetTextAtLoc(RTB->SelectionStart); // selects the replacement string RTB->SelectionStart += RTB->SelectionLength - 1; While this code seems to do its job (SelectionStart/Length properties are updated correctly), the caret doesn't move to the end of the new string - It says right where it was at the time of GetTextAtLoc's first call. Redrawing the textbox does seem to have any effect either.

Now, ultimately, I want to parse each line in the file, determine the appropriate type, and insert that row into a database via a Rails migration. For ex: Fruit.create(:name => 'apple', :color => 'red', :tasty => true, :qty => 3) Help!

  • WCF - WebReferences not working

    At the client end, I have generated a Proxy using SvcUtil.exe and it is working fine. Then I have added a WebReference to the client assembly and calling the same method. But it is not working. My program is running in console mode and the method is suppose to return a string. It is not returning the string. I just see a blank console window. No exception is thrown. And after setting a debug point on the method call I see that, program is halted on the method call for ever. What should I look for to solve the problem? I am using VS2005. And adding the webReference by right-clicking the client project and then clicking "Add Web Reference" pop-up menu.

    I am getting this exception from a MySqlCommand.ExecuteNonQuery(): Index and length must refer to a location within the string. Parameter name: length The command text is as follows: INSERT INTO accounts (username, password, salt, pin, banned, staff, logged_in, points_a, points_b, points_c, birthday) VALUES ('adminb', 'aea785fbcac7f870769d30226ad55b1aab850fb0979ee00481a87bc846744a646a649d30bca5474b59e4292095c74fa47ae6b9b3a856beef332ff873474cc0d3', 'cb162ef55ff7c58c7cb9f2a580928679', '', '0, '0', '0', '0', '0', '0', '2010-04-18') Sorry for the long string, it is a SHA512 hash. I tried manually adding this data in the table from MySQL GUI tools, and it worked perfectly. I see no "out of range" problem in these strings. Does anybody see something wrong?

    Hi, I'm populating a listview with a list of databases on a selected SQL instance, then retrieving a value from each database (It's internal product version, column doesn't always exist) I'm calling the below function to populate the second column of the listview: item.SubItems.Add(DBVersionCheck(serverName, database.Name)) Function DBVersionCheck(ByVal SelectedInstance As String, ByVal SelectedDatabase As String) Dim m_Connection As New SqlConnection("Server=" + SelectedInstance + ";User Id=sa;Password=password;Database=" + SelectedDatabase) Dim db_command As New SqlCommand("select Setting from SystemSettings where [Setting] = 'version'", m_Connection) Try m_Connection.Open() Return db_command.ExecuteScalar().trim m_Connection.Dispose() Catch ex As Exception 'MessageBox.Show(ex.Message) Return "NA" Finally m_Connection.Dispose() End Try End Function This works fine except it's creating a connection to each database and leaving it open. My understanding is the close()\dispose() releases only the connection from the pool in ado rather than the actual connection to sql. How would I close the actual connections after I've retrieved the value? Leaving these open will create hundreds of connections to databases that will probably not be used for that session.

  • Style list of divs as 2 column layout with css

    I'm trying out ASP.NET MVC 2 by going through the "NerdDinner" tutorial. But apparently version 2 of MVC doesn't create a Details page the same as in the tutorial, and you get divs with css classes on them to style. However, I want to get the style where each label is followed on the same line with the field, and I can't do it, I get them on top of each other, or if I try using floats weird things happen (probably because I don't know exactly how to use it in this situation, where every other div should be on the same line). Joh.* 2. .*An.* 3. .*st.* But, the above retrieves the entire string instead of the values I want. How can I get the correct values?     Hi, I'm trying to use JRuby in a custom application, and I don't seem to be able to load the JRubyEngine object.     I have a VB6 app. I am trying to figure out what command line parameters got passed into the application. If I type in ? Command$ into the Immediate window, it prints out the command line params fine. Same, if I place Command$ into the Watch window. However, if I assign the Command$ function to a string: Dim s as string s = Command$ the s variable will be empty. What am I missing here? I should mention that the code in question is located not in the main form, but in a DLL 2 levels down (e.g. the form calls DLL1, then DLL1 calls DLL2).

    I am a beginner to C++/CLI as I come from a C# background. I am currently writing a wrapper for some native C++ code. However, the second function with the IPAddress object as the signiture gives me the following error: error C2228: left of '.ToString' must have class/struct/union ...When I type ? address.ToString() ...in the command window, the IP Address prints. Not sure where I'm going wrong. Any ideas?

    Hi, I have the following class: public class Item { public Dictionary<string, string> Data { get; set; } } and a list of it: List<Item> items; I need to filter and order this list dynamicly using SQL-Like strings. The catch is, that I need to order it by the Data dictionary. For example: Order By Data["lastname"] or Where Data["Name"].StartsWith("a"). I thought to use the dynamic linq library, but is there any way that my clients can write without the Data[]? For example: Name.StartsWith("abc") instead of Data["Name"].StartsWith("abc") ?     Hello, I have a WCF Service (called "myservice.svc") that takes a message from a user and saves it to the database. It returns a response to the user in the form of a number. We do so here, and explicitly set the buffering – an important point for TCP communication. Next, we set up lazy reading from the socket's Handle. For each incoming line, we pass it to handle. After there is no more data – because the remote end has closed the socket – we output a message about that. Since hGetContents blocks until the server closes the socket on the other side, I used hGetLine instead. It satisfied me before I decided to implement multiline output to client. I wouldn't like the server to close a socket every time it finishes sending multiline text. The only simple idea I have at the moment is to count the number of linefeeds and stop reading lines after two subsequent linefeeds. Do you have any better suggestions? Thanks.
