• Building a Store Locator ASP.NET Application Using Google Maps API (Part 3)

  Over the past two weeks I've showed how to build a store locator application using ASP.NET and the free Google Maps API and Google's geocoding service. Part 1 looked at creating the database to record the store locations. This database contains a table named Stores with columns capturing each store's address and latitude and longitude coordinates. Part 1 also showed how to use Google's geocoding service to translate a user-entered address into latitude and longitude coordinates, which could then be used to retrieve and display those stores within (roughly) a 15 mile area. At the end of Part 1, the results page listed the nearby stores in a grid. In Part 2 we used the Google Maps API to add an interactive map to the search results page, with each nearby store displayed on the map as a marker. The map added in Part 2 certainly improves the search results page, but the way the nearby stores are displayed on the map leaves a bit to be desired. For starters, each nearby store is displayed on the map using the same marker icon, namely a red pushpin. This makes it difficult to match up the nearby stores listed in the grid with those displayed on the map. Hovering the mouse over a marker on the map displays the store number in a tooltip, but ideally a user could click a marker to see more detailed information about the store, such as its address, phone number, a photo of the storefront, and so forth. This third and final installment shows how to enhance the map created in Part 2. Specifically, we'll see how to customize the marker icons displayed in the map to make it easier to identify which marker corresponds to which nearby store location. • Implementing fog of war in opengl es 2.0 game

  Hi game development community, this is my first question here! ;) I'm developing a tactics/strategy real time android game and I've been wondering for some time what's the best way to implement an efficient and somewhat nice looking fog of war to incorporate in it. My experience with OpenGL or Android is not vast by any means, but I think it is sufficient for what I'm asking here. So far I have thought in some solutions: Draw white circles to a dark background, corresponding to the units visibility, then render to a texture, and then drawing a quad with that texture with blend mode set to multiply. Will this approach be efficient? Will it take too much memory? (I don't know how to render to texture and then use the texture. Is it too messy?) Have a grid object with a vertex shader which has an array of uniforms having the coordinates of all units, and another array which has their visibility range. The number of units will very probably never be bigger then 100. The vertex shader needs to test for each considered vertex, if there is some unit which can see it. In order to do this it, will have to loop the array with the coordinates and do some calculations based on distance. The efficiency of this is inversely proportional to the looks of it. A more dense grid will result in a more beautiful fog of war... but will require a greater amount of vertexes to be checked. Is it possible to find a nice compromise or is this a bad solution from the start? Which solution is the best? Are there better alternatives? Which ones? Thank you for your time.

• A Look at the GridView's New Sorting Styles in ASP.NET 4.0

  Like every Web control in the ASP.NET toolbox, the GridView includes a variety of style-related properties, including CssClass, Font, ForeColor, BackColor, Width, Height, and so on. The GridView also includes style properties that apply to certain classes of rows in the grid, such as RowStyle, AlternatingRowStyle, HeaderStyle, and PagerStyle. Each of these meta-style properties offer the standard style properties (CssClass, Font, etc.) as subproperties. In ASP.NET 4.0, Microsoft added four new style properties to the GridView control: SortedAscendingHeaderStyle, SortedAscendingCellStyle, SortedDescendingHeaderStyle, and SortedDescendingCellStyle. These four properties are meta-style properties like RowStyle and HeaderStyle, but apply to column of cells rather than a row. These properties only apply when the GridView is sorted - if the grid's data is sorted in ascending order then the SortedAscendingHeaderStyle and SortedAscendingCellStyle properties define the styles for the column the data is sorted by. The SortedDescendingHeaderStyle and SortedDescendingCellStyle properties apply to the sorted column when the results are sorted in descending order. These four new properties make it easier to customize the appearance of the column by which the data is sorted. Using these properties along with a touch of Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) it is possible to add up and down arrows to the sorted column's header to indicate whether the data is sorted in ascending or descending order. • DRM Tallyrand - The New User Interface

  I received word recently that the Tallyrand (11.1.2.0) build is out of our hands. I'm not sure when it will hit eDelivery, but if it hasn't already it should happen soon. For this post, I want to really quickly show the new user interface. The login screen: When you login, you are browsing versions and hierarchies. Note that Unicode is fully supported: The UI attempts to provide context-sensitive links where possible; notice here that an unloaded version is selected, so the UI shows a link. Clicking the link automatically brings up this Load Version dialog. This same thing applies elsewhere in the UI when you attempt to perform an action with an unloaded version: Here is browsing a hierarchy, with the property grid and context menu displayed (though you can hide the property grid anytime you like to provide more room): Worried about drag and drop? Don't! We support it even though this is a browser app. Also notice the Relationships feature on the right displaying a node's ancestors: Where possible, we try to present the available options, rather than just throwing up an "OK/Cancel" dialog (which most users never read anyway): Context-sensitive shortcuts automatically fill-in the context based on the currently selected node. For example, if you want to run a query using the selected node as the root, you can just click that query in the Shortcuts tab. In this screenshot, clicking Model After would model the selected node: This is just for starters. There is much more to cover, on both the client and server. For example, all communication channels are now configurable (no more DCOM). You can pick the ports, the encoding (binary or XML), and the transport mechanism (TCP, TCP over SSL, or SOAP over HTTP). All the relevant WS-* standards are also supported, eg: WS-Security, etc. Plus new features (besides the web client and unicode support). • Procedural Generation of tile-based 2d World

  I am writing a 2d game that uses tile-based top-down graphics to build the world (i.e. the ground plane). Manually made this works fine. Now I want to generate the ground plane procedurally at run time. In other words: I want to place the tiles (their textures) randomised on the fly. Of course I cannot create an endless ground plane, so I need to restrict how far from the player character (on which the camera focuses on) I procedurally generate the ground floor. My approach would be like this: I have a 2d grid that stores all tiles of the floor at their correct x/y coordinates within the game world. When the players moves the character, therefore also the camera, I constantly check whether there are empty locations in my x/y map within a max. distance from the character, i.e. cells in my virtual grid that have no tile set. In such a case I place a new tile there. Therefore the player would always see the ground plane without gaps or empty spots. I guess that would work, but I am not sure whether that would be the best approach. Is there a better alternative, maybe even a best-practice for my case?

• What's up with LDoms: Part 2 - Creating a first, simple guest

  Welcome back! In the first part, we discussed the basic concepts of LDoms and how to configure a simple control domain.  We saw how resources were put aside for guest systems and what infrastructure we need for them.  With that, we are now ready to create a first, very simple guest domain.  In this first example, we'll keep things very simple.  Later on, we'll have a detailed look at things like sizing, IO redundancy, other types of IO as well as security. For now,let's start with this very simple guest.  It'll have one core's worth of CPU, one crypto unit, 8GB of RAM, a single boot disk and one network port.  CPU and RAM are easy.  The network port we'll create by attaching a virtual network port to the vswitch we created in the primary domain.  This is very much like plugging a cable into a computer system on one end and a network switch on the other.  For the boot disk, we'll need two things: A physical piece of storage to hold the data - this is called the backend device in LDoms speak.  And then a mapping between that storage and the guest domain, giving it access to that virtual disk.  For this example, we'll use a ZFS volume for the backend.  We'll discuss what other options there are for this and how to chose the right one in a later article.  Here we go: root@sun # ldm create mars root@sun # ldm set-vcpu 8 mars root@sun # ldm set-mau 1 mars root@sun # ldm set-memory 8g mars root@sun # zfs create rpool/guests root@sun # zfs create -V 32g rpool/guests/mars.bootdisk root@sun # ldm add-vdsdev /dev/zvol/dsk/rpool/guests/mars.bootdisk \ mars.root@primary-vds root@sun # ldm add-vdisk root mars.root@primary-vds mars root@sun # ldm add-vnet net0 switch-primary mars That's all, mars is now ready to power on.  There are just three commands between us and the OK prompt of mars:  We have to "bind" the domain, start it and connect to its console.  Binding is the process where the hypervisor actually puts all the pieces that we've configured together.  If we made a mistake, binding is where we'll be told (starting in version 2.1, a lot of sanity checking has been put into the config commands themselves, but binding will catch everything else).  Once bound, we can start (and of course later stop) the domain, which will trigger the boot process of OBP.  By default, the domain will then try to boot right away.  If we don't want that, we can set "auto-boot?" to false.  Finally, we'll use telnet to connect to the console of our newly created guest.  The output of "ldm list" shows us what port has been assigned to mars.  By default, the console service only listens on the loopback interface, so using telnet is not a large security concern here. root@sun # ldm set-variable auto-boot\?=false mars root@sun # ldm bind mars root@sun # ldm start mars root@sun # ldm list NAME STATE FLAGS CONS VCPU MEMORY UTIL UPTIME primary active -n-cv- UART 8 7680M 0.5% 1d 4h 30m mars active -t---- 5000 8 8G 12% 1s root@sun # telnet localhost 5000 Trying 127.0.0.1... Ethernet address 0:21:28:24:1b:50, Host ID: 85241b50. {0} ok We're done, mars is ready to install Solaris, preferably using AI, of course ;-)  But before we do that, let's have a little look at the OBP environment to see how our virtual devices show up here: {0} ok printenv auto-boot? auto-boot? = false {0} ok printenv boot-device boot-device = disk net {0} ok devalias root /virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/disk@0 net0 /virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/network@0 net /virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/network@0 disk /virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200/disk@0 virtual-console /virtual-devices/console@1 name aliases We can see that setting the OBP variable "auto-boot?" to false with the ldm command worked.  Of course, we'd normally set this to "true" to allow Solaris to boot right away once the LDom guest is started.  The setting for "boot-device" is the default "disk net", which means OBP would try to boot off the devices pointed to by the aliases "disk" and "net" in that order, which usually means "disk" once Solaris is installed on the disk image.  The actual devices these aliases point to are shown with the command "devalias".  Here, we have one line for both "disk" and "net".  The device paths speak for themselves.  Note that each of these devices has a second alias: "net0" for the network device and "root" for the disk device.  These are the very same names we've given these devices in the control domain with the commands "ldm add-vnet" and "ldm add-vdisk".  Remember this, as it is very useful once you have several dozen disk devices... • How can a single script attached to multiple enemies provide separate behavior for each enemy?

  I am making a TD game and now stucked at multiple enemies using same script. All is well with scripts attached with one enemy only. Problem is in running multiple enemies. Here is the overview. I have a Enemy object with which I have attached a 'RunEnemy' script. Flow of this script is: RunEnemy.cs: PathF p; p = gameObject.GetComponent<PathF>(); //PathF is a pathfinding algo which has 'search; function which returns a array of path from starting position PathList = p.search(starting position); //------------------------------- if(PathList != null) { //if a way found! if(moving forward) transform.Translate(someXvalue,0,0); //translates on every frame until next grid point else if(moving back) transform.Translate(0,someXvalue,0); ...and so on.. if(reached on next point) PathList = p.search(from this point) //call again from next grid point so that if user placed a tower enemy will run again on the returned path } Now I have attached this script and "PathF.cs" to a single enemy which works perfect. I have then made one more enemy object and attached both of these script to it as well, which is not working they both are overlapping movements. I can't understand why, I have attached these scripts on two different gameobjects but still their values change when either enemy changes its value. I don't want to go with a separate script for each enemy because there would be 30 enemies in a scene. How can I fix this problem?

It works in the same way for sorting. • How can I better implement A star algorithm with a very large set of nodes?

  I'm making a game with nodejs in which many enemies must converge on the player as the player moves around a relatively open space (right now it is an open field with few obstacles, but eventually there may be some small buildings in the field with 1 or 2 rooms). It's a multiplayer game using websockets, so the server needs to keep track of enemies and players. I found this javascript A* library which I've modified to be used on the server as a nodejs module. The library utilizes a Binary Heap to track the nodes for the algorithm, so it should be pretty fast (and indeed, with a small grid, say 100x100 it is lightning fast). The problem is that my game is not really tile-based. As the player moves around the map, he is moving on a more or less 1-to-1 per-pixel coordinate system (the player can move in 8 directions, 1 or 2 pixels at a time). In preliminary tests, on an 800x600 field, the path-finding can take anywhere from 400 to 1000 ms. Multiply that by 10 enemies and the game starts to get pretty choppy. I have already set it up so that each enemy will only do a path-finding call once per second or even as slow as once every 2 seconds (they have to keep updating their path because the players can move freely). But even with this long interval, there are noticeable lag spikes or chops every couple of seconds as the enemies update their paths. I'm willing to approach the problem of path-finding differently, if there's another option. I'm assuming that the real problem is the enormous grid (800x600). It also occurs to me that maybe the large arrays are to blame, as I've read that V8 has trouble with large arrays.

• Box Collider isn't rotating with Game Object

  I have a method that creates a room by instantiating a prefab, places it in a grid and the re-sizes the collider based on a room definition (location in grid, rotation, width and height). • Oracle SQL Developer: Fetching SQL Statement Result Sets

  Running queries, browsing tables – you are often faced with many thousands, if not millions, of rows. Most people are happy with looking at the first few rows. But occasionally you need to see more. SQL Developer doesn’t show you all records, all at once. Instead, it brings the records down in ‘chunks,’ or as-needed. How It Works There is a preference that tells SQL Developer how many records to get in a single request, or ‘fetch’ of records. The default is 50… So if I run a query that returns MORE than 50 rows: There’s more than 50 records in this resultset, but we have 50 in the grid to start with. We don’t know how many records are in this result set actually. To show the record count here, we actually go physically query the database with a row count type query. All we know is that the query has finished executing, and that there are rows available to go fetch. It tells us when it’s done. As you scroll through the grid, if you get to record 50 and scroll more, we’ll get 50 more records. Or, you can cheat to get to the ‘bottom’ of the result set. You can ask SQL Developer to just to get all the records at once… Once all the records have been fetched, you’ll see this: All rows fetched! A word of caution There’s a reason we have the default set to 50 and not 1000. Bringing back data can get expensive and heavy. We’ve found the best performance to be found in that 50 to 200 record range.

• Pathfinding and BSP with Box2D

  I'm looking into implementing AI in my 2D side-scrolling platformer, and I'm looking into using algorithms such as A*. For many kinds of pathfinding, we need some sort of grid or systems of nodes or polygon areas. My problem is that I am using Box2d for physics and I am not sure how best to create a structure that my AI can use besides placing individual nodes manually (something I really want to avoid) and using some sort of steering behavior. My level design is tile-based with each tile being about half of the height/width of my main character. The tiles are not all square (some are sloped). I'd like to have a system that can see what the terrain looks like for pathfinding and also keep track of the positions of other actors such as enemies. I'd like to avoid directly placing any nodes into my level design except for possible endpoints or goals. This question is related: How do you do AI path following within a 2d physics engine like farseer/box2d?, but it doesn't specify what kind of structure I could use instead of a list of nodes. I'm looking for some kind of grid or type of BSP that I can query for algorithms like A*.

• Coarse Collision Detection in highly dynamic environment

  I'm currently working a 3D space game with A LOT of dynamic objects that are all moving (there is pretty much no static environment). I have the collision detection and resolution working just fine, but I am now trying to optimize the collision detection (which is currently O(N^2) -- linear search). I thought about multiple options, a bounding volume hierarchy, a Binary Spatial Partitioning tree, an Octree or a Grid. I however need some help with deciding what's best for my situation. A grid seems unfeasible simply due to the space requirements and cache coherence problems. Since everything is so dynamic however, it seems to be that trees aren't ideal either, since they would have to be completely rebuilt every frame. I must admit I never implemented a physics engine that required spatial partitioning, do I indeed need to rebuild the tree every frame (assuming that everything is constantly moving) or can I update the trees after integrating? Advice is much appreciated - to give some more background: You're flying a space ship in an asteroid field, and there are lots and lots of asteroids and some enemy ships, all of which shoot bullets. EDIT: I came across the "Sweep an Prune" algorithm, which seems like the right thing for my purposes. It appears like the right mixture of fast building of the data structures involved and detailed enough partitioning.
