• Using LINQ to Twitter OAuth with Windows 8

  In previous posts, I explained how to use LINQ to Twitter with Windows 8, but the example was a Twitter Search, which didn’t require authentication. Much of the Twitter API requires authentication, so this post will explain how you can perform OAuth authentication with LINQ to Twitter in a Windows 8 Metro-style application. Getting Started I have earlier posts on how to create a Windows 8 app and add pages, so I’ll assume it isn’t necessary to repeat here. One difference is that I’m using Visual Studio 2012 RC and some of the terminology and/or library code might be slightly different.  Here are steps to get started: Create a new Windows metro style app, selecting the Blank App project template. Create a new Basic Page and name it OAuth.xaml.  Note: You’ll receive a prompt window for adding files and you should click Yes because those files are necessary for this demo. Add a new Basic Page named TweetPage.xaml. Open App.xaml.cs and change !rootFrame.Navigate(typeof(MainPage)) to !rootFrame.Navigate(typeof(TweetPage)). Now that the project is set up you’ll see the reason why authentication is required by setting up the TweetPage. Setting Up to Tweet a Status In this section, I’ll show you how to set up the XAML and code-behind for a tweet.  The tweet logic will check to see if the user is authenticated before performing the tweet. To tweet, I put a TextBox and Button on the XAML page. The following code omits most of the page, concentrating primarily on the elements of interest in this post: <StackPanel Grid.Row="1"> <TextBox Name="TweetTextBox" Margin="15" /> <Button Name="TweetButton" Content="Tweet" Click="TweetButton_Click" Margin="15,0" /> </StackPanel> Given the UI above, the user types the message they want to tweet, and taps Tweet. This invokes TweetButton_Click, which checks to see if the user is authenticated.  If the user is not authenticated, the app navigates to the OAuth page.  If they are authenticated, LINQ to Twitter does an UpdateStatus to post the user’s tweet.  Here’s the TweetButton_Click implementation: void TweetButton_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { PinAuthorizer auth = null; if (SuspensionManager.SessionState.ContainsKey("Authorizer")) { auth = SuspensionManager.SessionState["Authorizer"] as PinAuthorizer; } if (auth == null || !auth.IsAuthorized) { Frame.Navigate(typeof(OAuthPage)); return; } var twitterCtx = new TwitterContext(auth); Status tweet = twitterCtx.UpdateStatus(TweetTextBox.Text); new MessageDialog(tweet.Text, "Successful Tweet").ShowAsync(); } For authentication, this app uses PinAuthorizer, one of several authorizers available in the LINQ to Twitter library. I’ll explain how PinAuthorizer works in the next section. What’s important here is that LINQ to Twitter needs an authorizer to post a Tweet. The code above checks to see if a valid authorizer is available. To do this, it uses the SuspensionManager class, which is part of the code generated earlier when creating OAuthPage.xaml. The SessionState property is a Dictionary<string, object> and I’m using the Authorizer key to store the PinAuthorizer.  If the user previously authorized during this session, the code reads the PinAuthorizer instance from SessionState and assigns it to the auth variable. If the user is authorized, auth would not be null and IsAuthorized would be true. Otherwise, the app navigates the user to OAuthPage.xaml, which I’ll discuss in more depth in the next section. When the user is authorized, the code passes the authorizer, auth, to the TwitterContext constructor. LINQ to Twitter uses the auth instance to build OAuth signatures for each interaction with Twitter.  You no longer need to write any more code to make this happen. The code above accepts the tweet just posted in the Status instance, tweet, and displays a message with the text to confirm success to the user. You can pull the PinAuthorizer instance from SessionState, instantiate your TwitterContext, and use it as you need. Just remember to make sure you have a valid authorizer, like the code above. As shown earlier, the code navigates to OAuthPage.xaml when a valid authorizer isn’t available. The next section shows how to perform the authorization upon arrival at OAuthPage.xaml. Doing the OAuth Dance This section shows how to authenticate with LINQ to Twitter’s built-in OAuth support. From the user perspective, they must be navigated to the Twitter authentication page, add credentials, be navigated to a Pin number page, and then enter that Pin in the Windows 8 application. The following XAML shows the relevant elements that the user will interact with during this process. <StackPanel Grid.Row="2"> <WebView x:Name="OAuthWebBrowser" HorizontalAlignment="Left" Height="400" Margin="15" VerticalAlignment="Top" Width="700" /> <TextBlock Text="Please perform OAuth process (above), enter Pin (below) when ready, and tap Authenticate:" Margin="15,15,15,5" /> <TextBox Name="PinTextBox" Margin="15,0,15,15" Width="432" HorizontalAlignment="Left" IsEnabled="False" /> <Button Name="AuthenticatePinButton" Content="Authenticate" Margin="15" IsEnabled="False" Click="AuthenticatePinButton_Click" /> </StackPanel> The WebView in the code above is what allows the user to see the Twitter authentication page. The TextBox is for entering the Pin, and the Button invokes code that will take the Pin and allow LINQ to Twitter to complete the authentication process. As you can see, there are several steps to OAuth authentication, but LINQ to Twitter tries to minimize the amount of code you have to write. The two important parts of the code to make this happen are the part that starts the authentication process and the part that completes the authentication process. The following code, from OAuthPage.xaml.cs, shows a couple events that are instrumental in making this process happen: public OAuthPage() { this.InitializeComponent(); this.Loaded += OAuthPage_Loaded; OAuthWebBrowser.LoadCompleted += OAuthWebBrowser_LoadCompleted; } The OAuthWebBrowser_LoadCompleted event handler enables UI controls when the browser is done loading – notice that the TextBox and Button in the previous XAML have their IsEnabled attributes set to False. These are credentials that come from registering an application with Twitter, explained in the LINQ to Twitter documentation, Securing Your Applications. Notice how I use Dispatcher.RunAsync to marshal the web browser navigation back onto the UI thread. Internally, LINQ to Twitter invokes the lambda expression assigned to GoToTwitterAuthorization when starting the OAuth process.  In this case, we want the WebView control to navigate to the Twitter authentication page, which is defined with a default URL in LINQ to Twitter and passed to the GoToTwitterAuthorization lambda as pageLink. Then you need to start the authorization process by calling BeginAuthorize. This starts the OAuth dance, running asynchronously.  LINQ to Twitter invokes the callback assigned to the BeginAuthorize parameter, allowing you to take whatever action you need, based on the Status of the response, resp. As mentioned earlier, this is where the user performs the authentication process, enters the Pin, and clicks authenticate. The Pin is from what the user entered in the TextBox prior to clicking the Authenticate button that invoked this method. The callback handles the response from completing the OAuth process. The completeResp holds information about the results of the operation, indicated by a Status property of type TwitterErrorStatus. On success, the code assigns auth to SessionState. You might remember SessionState from the previous description of TweetPage – this is where the valid authorizer comes from. After saving the authorizer, the code navigates the user back to TweetPage, where they can type in a message, click the Tweet button, and observe that they have successfully tweeted. Summary You’ve seen how to get started with using LINQ to Twitter in a Metro-style application. The generated code contained a SuspensionManager class with way to manage information across multiple pages via its SessionState property. You also saw how LINQ to Twitter performs authorization in two steps of starting the process and completing the process when the user provides a Pin number. Remember to marshal callback thread back onto the UI – you saw earlier how to use Dispatcher.RunAsync to accomplish this. There were a few steps in the process, but LINQ to Twitter did minimize the amount of code you needed to write to make it happen. • Looking into the jQuery LazyLoad Plugin

  I have been using JQuery for a couple of years now and it has helped me to solve many problems on the client side of web development.  You can find all my posts about JQuery in this link. In this post I will be providing you with a hands-on example on the JQuery LazyLoad Plugin.If you want you can have a look at this post, where I describe the JQuery Cycle Plugin.You can find another post of mine talking about the JQuery Carousel Lite Plugin here. There are times when when I am asked to create a very long page with lots of images.My first thought is to enable paging on the proposed page. Imagine that we have 60 images on a page. There are performance concerns when we have so many images on a page. Paging can solve that problem if I am allowed to place only 5 images on a page.Sometimes the customer does not like the idea of the paging.Believe it or not some people find the idea of paging not attractive at all.In that case I need a way to only load the initial set of images and as the user scrolls down the page to load the rest.So as someone scrolls down new requests are made to the server and more images are fetched. I can accomplish that with the jQuery LazyLoad Plugin.This is just a plugin that delays loading of images in long web pages.The images that are outside of the viewport (visible part of web page) won't be loaded before the user scrolls to them. Using jQuery LazyLoad Plugin on long web pages containing many large images makes the page load faster. In this hands-on example I will be using Expression Web 4.0.This application is not a free application. You can use any HTML editor you like. You can use Visual Studio 2012 Express edition. I have  added references to the JQuery library (current version is 1.8.3) and the JQuery LazyLoad Plugin. Then I add the images that will not load unless they become active in the viewport. I have all my img tags pointing the src attribute towards a placeholder image. • How to make a player stay within bounds of world with 2D Camera

  Im creating a simple top down survival game. At the moment, i have the sprite which is a ship and moves by rotating left or right then going forward in that direction. I have implemented a 2D camera, its always centered on the player. However, when i move towards the bounds of the world that the sprite is in it just keeps on going :( How to i sort it that it stops at the edge of the world and cant go beyond it?   Good aftenoon, I created a super simple console app to test out the Enterprise Library Caching Application Block, and the behavior is blaffling. I'm hoping I screwed something that's easy to fix in the setup. Have each item expire after 5 seconds for testing purposes. Basic setup -- "every second pick a number between 0 and 2. if the cache doesn't already have it, put it in there -- otherwise just grab it from the cache. Do this inside a LOCK statement to ensure thread safety. • Overriding the save() method of a model that uses django-mptt

  I've been using django-mptt in my project for a while now, it's fabulous. Recently, I've found a need to override a model's save() method that uses mptt, and I'm getting an error when I try to save a new instance of that model: Exception Type: ValueError at /admin/scrivener/page/add/ Exception Value: Cannot use None as a query value I'm assuming that this is a result of the fact that the instance hasn't been stuck into a tree yet, but I'm not sure how to go about fixing this. • How to read from path in wpf comboboxitem and write into path of binding

  Hi, I tried to make up an example to show my problem. My combobox has a list of objects as itemssource. In my example it's a list of Persons. In the combobox i want to show the first name and the last name of the person. But i want to save the last name of the person in the "owner" property of the house-object. My guess was that i bind the SelectedValue to my property and the SelectedValuePath to the name of the property in the comboboxitem. I already googled and tried a view other versions but nothing worked. If i use SelectedItem instead of SelectedValue with the same binding at least the value of the "tostring" function get's written in the property. Sadly that solution doesn't fit in the Rest of my Program because i don't want to override "ToString". • ASP.NET MVC jquery.UI dialog - How to validate the dialog's input on server and return error?

  I am using jQuery1.4.2, ASP.NET MVC 2 and jQuery.UI-1.8. I am creating a data input dialog which works OK when all the data is valid, but I want to validate the input data on the server and return an error to the dialog describing the error and I am not quite sure how to do that and keep the dialog open. The dialog is opened when a link is clicked. The solution may be to try to bypass more of the MVC framework's default binding that handles the submit button clicks and creates the expected ProfilePermission object and calls the Controller's AddPermission POST Action method, but I was hoping there may be an easier way without have to write more jquery/javascript code to handle the button clicks and pass the data to the server.   I'm wanting to get a WCF-over-TCP service working. I was having some problems with modifying my own project, so I thought I'd start with the "base" WCF template included in VS2008.   I'm using D2K9, Zeos 7Alpha, and Firebird 2.1 I had this working before I added the autoinc field. Although I'm not sure I was doing it 100% correctly.   I used Microsoft's Chart Control of the WPF toolkit to write my own chart control. I blogged about it here. My Chart control stacks the yaxes in the chart on top of each other. As you can read in the article this all works quite well. Now I want to create a viewmodel that controls the data and axes in the chart. So far I'm able to add axes to the chart and show them in the chart. But I have a problem when I try to add the lineseries because it has one DependentAxis and one InDependentAxis property. I don't know how to assign the proper xAxis and yAxis controls to it. Below you see part of the LineSeriesViewModel.   I am using Expression Blend 4 and Visual Studio 2010 to create a Sketchflow prototype. I have a Sample Data collection and a ListBox that is bound to it. This displays as I would expect both at design time and at run time. However, the ListBoxItem template it just complex enough that I wanted to pull it out into its own XAML file. Even though the items still render as expected in the main ListBox where the template is used, when I open the template itself, all of the databound controls are empty. If I add a DataContext to the template, I can see and work with the populated objects while in the template, but then that local DataContext overrides the DataContext set on the listbox. A bit of code will illustrate. Start by creating a Sketchflow project (I am using Silverlight, but it should work the same for WPF), then add a project data source called SampleDataSource. Add a collection called ListData, with a single String property called Title. When you open Main.xaml in the Expression designer, the list box is populated with sample data. But when you open DemoListBoxItemTemplate.xaml, there is no data context and therefore no data to display—which makes it more difficult to identify controls visually. How can I have sample data displayed when I am working with the template, while still allowing the larger set of sample data to be used for the ListBox itself?

• Why does my sharepoint web part event handler lose the sender value on postback?

  I have a web part which is going to be a part of pair of connected web parts. For simplicity, I am just describing the consumer web part. This web part has 10 link buttons on it. And they are rendered in the Render method instead ofCreateChildControls as this webpart will be receiving values based on input from the provider web part. Each Link Button has a text which is decided dynamically based on the input from provider web part. When I click on any of the Link Buttons, the event handler is triggered but the text on the Link Button shows up as the one set in CreateChildControls. When I trace the code, I see that the CreateChildControls gets called before the event handler (and i think that resets my Link Buttons). How do I get the event handler to show me the dynamic text instead? • If record exists in database, UPDATE a single column

  I have a bulk uploading object in place that is being used to bulk upload roughly 25-40 image files at a time. Each image is about 100-150 kb in size. During the upload, I've created a for each loop that takes the file name of the image (minus the file extension) to write it into a column named "sku". Also, for each file being uploaded, the date is recorded to a column named DateUpdated, as well as some image path data. This is because these product images are always being revised and improved. For each new/improved image, the file name and extension will remain the same - so that when image 321-54321.jpg was first uploaded to the server, the new/improved version of that image will still have the image file name as 321-54321.jpg. I can't say for sure if the file sizes will remain in the 100-150KB range. I'll assume that the image file size will grow eventually. When images get uploaded (again), there of course will be an existing record in the database for that image. What is the best way to: Check the database for the existing record (stored procedure or SqlDataReader or create a DataSet ...?) Then if record exists, simply UPDATE that record so that the DateUpdated column gets today's date. If no record exists, do the INSERT of the record as normal. Things to consider: If the record exists, we'll let the actual image be uploaded. It will simply overwrite the existing image so that the new version gets displayed on the web. We're using SQL Server 2000 on hosted environment (DiscountAsp). I'm programming in C#. The uploading process will be used by about 2 managers a few times a month (each) - which to me is not a allot of usage. Although I'm a jr. developer, I'm guessing that a stored procedure would be the way to go. Just seems more efficient - to do this record check away from the for each loop... but not sure. I'd need extra help writing a sproc, since I don't have too much experience with them. Thank everyone...

• How to configure a GridView CommandField to trigger Full Page Update in UpdatePanel

  I have 2 user controls on my page. One is used for searching, and the other is used for editing (along with a few other things). The user control that provides the search functionality uses a GridView to display the search results. This GridView has a CommandField used for editing (showEditButton="true"). I would like to place the GridView into an UpdatePanel so that paging through the search results will be smooth. The thing is that when the user clicks the Edit Link (the CommandField) I need to preform a full page postback so that the search user control can be hidden and the edit user control can be displayed. Edit: the reason I need to do a full page postback is because the edit user control is outside of the UpdatePanel that my GridView is in. It is not only outside the UpdatePanel, but it's in a completely different user control. I have no idea how to add the CommandField as a full page postback trigger to the UpdatePanel. The PostBackTrigger (which is used to indicate the controls cause a full page postback) takes a ControlID as a parameter; however the CommandButton does not have an ID...and you can see why I'm having a problem with this. Update on what else I've tried to solve the problem: I took a new approach to solving the problem. In my new approach, I used a TemplateField instead of a CommandField. I placed a LinkButton control in the TemplateField and gave it a name. During the GridView's RowDataBound event I retrieved the LinkButton control and added it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This is the ASP Markup for the UpdatePanel and the GridView <asp:UpdatePanel ID="SearchResultsUpdateSection" runat="server"> <ContentTemplate> <asp:GridView ID="SearchResultsGrid" runat="server" AllowPaging="true" AutoGenerateColumns="false"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField> <HeaderTemplate></HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> <asp:LinkButton ID="Edit" runat="server" Text="Edit"></asp:LinkButton> </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:BoundField ...... </Columns> </asp:GridView> </ContentTemplate> </asp:UpdatePanel> In my VB.NET code. I implemented a function that handles the GridView's RowDataBound event. In this method I find the LinkButton for the row being bound to, create a PostBackTrigger for the LinkButton, and add it to the UpdatePanel's Triggers. This means that a PostBackTrigger is created for every "edit" LinkButton in the GridView Edit: this did not create a PostBackTrigger for Every "edit" LinkButton because the ID is the same for all LinkButtons in the GridView. • C# asp.net EF MVC postgresql error 23505: Duplicate key violates unique constraint

  EDIT: It was issue with database table - dropping and recreating table id column did the work. Problem solved. I'm trying to build web application, that is connected to postgresql database. Results are displaying in view with Kendo UI. When I'm trying to add new row (with Kendo UI 'Add new record' button), I get error 23505: 'Duplicate key violates unique constraint'. My guess is, that EF takes id to insert from the beginning, not the last one, because after 35 (it's number of rows in table) tries - and errors - adding works perfectly. Can someone help me to understand, what's wrong?
