  There is this main class and there are several services ( which uses db connection to retrieve data ) These services are initialized in the main class db properties are obtained from the property file and then dbconnection is opened by calling a method dbOpen() written in the main class and the resultant connection object is set to the service objects by iterating through the list of services and by calling setConnection method on the service note: that the services are instantiated in the main class and the main class is not a superclass for services. So aside from C# I want to learn a new language. Time is precious and I want to give my focus to a language which have a future. My language list is: Scala (Powerful usage in Twitter) Go (Getting popular and channels are pretty awesome) Erlang (Stable server side programs. • Dash empy and blank Software Center

  I've Ubuntu 12.10.1 LTS x62 fresh of installation... My dash is empty, search doesn't work and applications list is empty. If I run the Ubuntu Software Center it freeze in a blank screen. • Partition showing up twice under devices

  I have an ntfs data partition on the same drive as my ubuntu 12.04 partition. I wanted to have this partition automatically mount at startup so that dropbox can start syncing at startup without me having to manually mount it (my dropbox folder is on the partition). I edited the fstab file by appending the following to it: #Data-Partition UUID=762639DE416D0A21 /media/Data ntfs-3g rw,auto,users,exec,nls=utf8,umask=003,gid=46,uid=1000 0 2 The drive now automounts at startup like I wanted, but now I have a duplicate Data entry under my Devices list. This only appeared after editing the fstab file. The second Data entry under Devices does not mount properly and I do not want it there. • Hiring developers - listing IDE as a requirement?

  I've been looking at some job postings and noticed that a fair amount of them list IDEs under the 'required skills' section, even for senior positions. This is not localized to one company either, but rather it's something that comes up once in every few postings. I am perplexed by this job requirement, as my mentors and some of the best coders I've seen in my life were VIM/Emacs ninjas. Similarly, when I work with people I don't much care what tools they use as long as they are productive on the team. Can someone please explain the rationale behind hiring managers making IDEs an official job requirement?

• Feasible to send marketing emails as an image?

  Is it feasible to send marketing emails entirely as images - apart from a link at the top, giving the option for the recipient to view the email online (in their browser) and one at the footer to unsubscribe from our mailing list? Anyone who's coded a html email template before knows how much of a pain it is to end up with the final design that displays 'properly' (rarely does it display the same in all clients) and doesn't break. I understand there's the possibility of people simply ignoring the email altogether should their email clients be set not to automatically download images, but many of our email primarily feature images anyway. Thoughts?

• Multiple weapons for android game

  I am trying to make a 3D game for android using the Rajawali engine to render the 3D graphics and blender for designing my models(exporting as .md2), and I want my character to be able to change weapons, armor, helm, etc. Rendering every possible animation would be too much: if I had 10 different weapons, 10 armor and 10 helm, I would have to create 1000 animations with every possible equipment and if I add boots to list it would be even worse. I read somewhere you can use bones for this; but in Android, I only get the object itself to work with. Does anyone has an idea how i can solve this? If I make the weapon a different object how do I parent it to my models in my game?

• All traffic is passed through OpenVPN although not requested

  I have a bash script on a Ubuntu box which searches for the fastest openvpn server, connects, and binds one program to the tun0 interface. Unfortunately, all traffic is being passed through the VPN. Does anybody know what's going on? The relevant line follows: openvpn --daemon --config $cfile --auth-user-pass ipvanish.pass --status openvpn-status.log There don't seem to be any entries in iptables when I enter sudo iptables --list.   i have a list of users, with minions, something like this: User52: minion10 minion12 User32: minion13 minion11 i've been keeping in an array where the "location" is the id, like this: Users: [52]User minions: [10]minion [12]minion [32]User minions: [13]minion [11]minion so i can access them easily like this: user[UserID].minions[MinionID] (ex: user[32].minions[11]) but when i print it or send it by json i get something like this: {,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,minion,,,,,,,,,,,,,,minion} but should i keep using like this or should i change to something like this: User = function(){ this.minions = ...; this.getMinion = function(value){ for(var m in this.minions){ if(this.minions[m].id == value){ return this.minions[m]; break; } } } } and get it like this: user.getMinion(MinionID); Question: i get better performance using a "short" array but using loops every time i need a minion, or using "long" arrays, but no need for loop and getting values directly from the id "name"?

• "Index of ..." directory's files listing

  On my courses we've got homework on site in folders such as: http://example.com/files/tasks1-edc34rtgfds http://example.com/files/tasks2-0bg454fgerg http://example.com/files/tasks3-h1dlkjiojo8 ... Each tasksi-xxxxxxxxxxx is a folder with 11 random characters at the end. And when you view the above URLs in browser you can see Index of /tasksi-xxxxxxxxx with all the files in that folder. When you view http://example.com/files/ you can see only empty html with words "Hello, world". The problem is that you can't look into the next task without knowledge of its URL. So for example we've got the URLs for tasks1 and tasks2, and we can't guess what tasks3 URL will be (as we need to know the 11 random characters at the end) How can I get the list of all directories? (Is there a way to type something like http://example.com/files/task1-aflafjal343/..? or another way?) I want to see all upcoming homework tasks.

• Installing ImageMagick for C(++) on Ubuntu 12.10

  I'm having a hard time installing the ImageMagick software for Ubuntu 12.10. So, I want the C and C++ API, not much more. Now when I go to imagemagick.org, they have a binary package for unix, namely an rpm. When I download and launch it, RPM complains that firstly I should be using alien, and secondly there are like 10000 missing dependencies. If I use alien to create a deb file, and the install it via the software center, the package does indeed install, but only the command line interface - no includes, anything. Same with apt-get imagemagick. (BTW - wtf, they don't have support for ubuntu?) I tried compiling from source (which I shoudn't be doing anyway - I'm not expecting much customization am I?), and then the includes are present, but the programs won't compile complaining about "undefined reference" and then a list of everything that isn't pure C (and I'm using the command imagemagick.org told me to use, namely cc -o wand pkg-config --cflags --libs MagickWand wand.c) so clearly I'm doing something wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• Trigger event on email send with old VB6 Outlook add-in

  I have a fairly old Outlook add-in written in VB6. This adds a toolbar on the Outlook ribbon with buttons for various bits of functionality which interact with emails in the inbox, the contact list and calendar. I have been asked if it would be possible to trigger some of the functions of this add-in when a user hits "Send" on an email. Does anyone know if it is possible to hook a VB6 program into the send event, or if it would be possible to write a new plugin, using .Net as an example, which could hook into the send event and trigger the functionality on the old plug in?? Sorry if this is a bit vague, it is a little hard to explain. If you need to know anything further, just ask, otherwise any advice is greatly appreciated!

• Rythmbox library set to: multiple locations and no way to edit/change

  I previously set Rhythmbox to include a few different locations. Now following changes to my directory structure, I'd like to reflect these changes in Rhythmbox. But when I go to "Library Location", I see "Multiple locations Set" and I can only add to the list; no way to edit/remove. I Googled this problem and the only relevant results I get date back to 2006, probably referring to a previous version of Rhythmbox and specifying components/locations that I can't find on my system. • Does google see the output of document.write?

  I've got a site where people can list machinery for sale. Each item for sale has it's own dynamic page. On each of these pages we allow the person selling the item to have a link back to their own website. Some people only sell a handful of items and some people are selling dozens or hundreds of items. So in some cases we can have a 100 links back to their external site. Our SEO guy is saying this is bad (i'll open another question on that). So i was wondering if i take the links and spit them out using document.write, will that hide them from google and the other SE's ?

There were a couple of warnings at "sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic fglrx-legacy" with update-alternatives. But, at the last step I got "aticonfig: No supported adapters detected". Unity does not start anymore. I only can login to Gnome. How can I get back to a working system?

• Should I create an Enum mapping to my database table

  I have a database table containing a list of systems relevant to the tool I am building, mostly in-house applications, or third-party systems we receive data from. This table is added to infrequently, approx every 2 months. One of these systems is Windows itself, which is where we store our users' LANs, and I now need to explicitly reference the ID relating to Windows to query for user name, team etc. I know it would be bad practice to embed the ID itself into the code, so my question is what would be the best way to avoid this? I'm assuming my options are: create a global constant representing this ID create a global enum containing all systems now create a global enum and add systems to it as & when they are required in the code retrieve the ID from the database based on system name I appreciate this may seem a trivial question, but I am going to have many situations like this during the course of this build, and although we are in complete control of the database I would like to conform to best practice as far as possible.
