• UbuntuGuide Fails

  How do I report a problem with the Ubuntu Guide website? http://ubuntuguide.org/images/UbuntuGuideSaucyPt1.epub is linked from http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Saucy_Repositories under 'eBook Version' above the list of contents at top of page,. However, that link is 404'd. Also tried http://ubuntuguide.org/images/UbuntuGuideSaucy.epub which also fails. So, where do we report Fail at ubuntuguide.org? I see nowhere there to so do. I have also tried, twice on separate days, to register there, but never get the confirmation email. Anyone have a suggestion?

  Assume I have abstract base model class called MoneySource. And two realizations BankCard and CellularAccount. In MoneysSourceListViewController I want to display a list of them, but with ListItemView different for each MoneySource subclass. What if I define a category on MoneySource @interface MoneySource (ListItemView) - (Class)listItemViewClass; @end And then override it for each concrete sublcass of MoneySource, returning suitable view class. @implementation CellularAccount (ListItemView) - (Class)listItemViewClass { return [BankCardListView class]; } @end @implementation BankCard (ListItemView) - (Class)listItemViewClass { return [CellularAccountListView class]; } @end so I can ask model object about its view, not violating MVC principles, and avoiding class introspection or if constructions. • Bukkit send a custom placed name plate?

  Hello i have been working on a part of my plugin that has waypoints allowing the user to create delete etc. I got to thinking after using and seeing a couple of the disguse plugins. That maybe i could create a command toggle that would show the user where the waypoints they have are! I know how to do all of this i just have no idea how to display a nameplate to the client. I know its possible because disguisecraft does it i tried looking though their code but couldent find much... I belive to get this effect i need to send packets to the client if someone can direct me to a list of bukkit packets or even a solution to sending the client a custom located nameplate that would be fantastic! • SQL Saturday 300 BBQ Crawl

• I try install dhcp3-server, but /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server file is missing. Whats going on?

  I've found several how-to's that essentially go through the same process in setting up DHCP. Here's a link that has the list of step needed install and setup DHCP. I follow all the steps and find that the sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server restart portion returns command not found only to reveal the the file doesn't even exist. I've installed (sudo apt-get install dhcp3-server) and uninstalled (sudo apt-get remove dhcp3-server) two or three times. I'm pretty sure my config files are good because I've had to check them three times. But I don't think I'm to that point of being able to see them action it. I cant control the process. Why is the file missing? How is it supposed to get there? Help?

• How to manage enemy movement and shoot in a shmup?

  I'm wondering what is the best (or at least a good) way of managing enemies in a shoot-em-up. Basically, what I'd do would be a class that manages displaying and updating positions of all the enemies. But how to create good deplacements for enemies? A list of where-to-go points? gravitating around some fixed points (with ponderation, distance evaluation etc.)? Same question for the shoot patterns? Can you please put me on a track?

• How to set up Google Chrome as default browser in Xubuntu

  I use Xubuntu 12.04. I uninstalled Firefox and now use Google Chrome version 19.xxx. To solve this problem, I tried: galternatives the "default apps" under settings and sudo update-alternatives --config x-www-browser Neither of these worked. Does anybody have an alternative solution for this? -- Solution: I used the "sudo gedit /usr/share/applications/defaults.list" tip from ??? and searched for firefox in the whole document! Everytime I found "firefox" I replaced it with "google-chrome.desktop". I also used the "default apps" menu to change it to google-chrome. And now it works.. I hope it helps some other ;-)

• FRM-40654 Error on Purchase Order Lines?? Stop 'em Now by Applying Patch 14204845

  Procurement Development has just released a new patch for Release 12 that will stop those annoying FRM-40654 errors on Purchase Order lines, before they occur. When a Purchase Order (PO) is created through autocreate from a requisition line that accidently has blank spaces, this triggers a row lock and when the user tries to update the created PO the FRM-40654 error message ‘Record has been updated. Requery block to see the change’ occurs. Development has added code to remove these leading or trailing spaces, thus avoiding the issue in the first place.  This patch has been added to the recommend patch list in Doc ID 1358356.1 'Recommended Patches for Purchase Order and Requisition Processing'.  Be proactive and apply Patch 14204845:R12.PO.B now!

• What most games would benefit from having

  I think I've seen "questions" like this on stackoverflow but sorry if I'm overstepping any bounds. Inspired by my recent question and all the nice answers (Checklist for finished game?) I think every gamedev out there has something he/she thinks that almost every game should have. That knowledge is welcome here! So this is probably going to be an inspirational subjective list of some sorts and the point is that anyone reading this question will see a point or two that they've overlooked in their own development and might benefit from adding. I think a good example might be: "some sort of manual or help section. Of course it should be proportional to how advanced the game is. Some users won't need it and won't go looking for it but the other ones that do will become very frustrated if they can't remember how to do something specific that should be in the manual". A bad example might be "good gameplay". Of course every game benefits from this but the answer is not very helpful.

• Ubuntu won't load properly all of a sudden

  This has been the second time this has happened, but when I booted this morning my hardware wasn't detected anymore. I see both screens pop up as normal, choose Ubuntu 14.04 in the grub list and from that point onwards none of the following hardware seems to be used: VGA, DVI-D, USB, Audio jacks. This has happened before, but at that time, I still had one screen left, so I could navigate through the (non-USB) keyboard and how weird this may sound, but from the moment I opened Windows in vmware, all of my hardware started working again. This was a few weeks ago, but the same seems to have happened again. This time I can't use that little hack though, since now Ubuntu stops using both screens. My hardware is all detected, Ubuntu just doesn't want to use it somehow. Did anybody else encounter this and how did they solve this?

• Comparing my version with the clean install

  I've been using and upgrading Ubuntu since the version 9. Of course, I have 13.04 now and after installing a clean 13.04 to another computer, I've noticed quite a few differences (plymouth, lightdm, some software behaves differently, etc.). I've done quite a few customizations during the period so it's probably due to that. So I wonder if there is a way to see what's different between my and the clean version. Not the complete file list diff, but perhaps software package differences (synaptic?) or something that will be easier to read and compare. Is there a way?

• Steam not displaying text on wine 1.5 running on Ubuntu 12.04

  Hello fellow dwellers of askubuntu, as the title says I'm having difficulties with getting Steam to run properly. I think I have the solution but I am pretty incompetent with Ubuntu (just started using it the other day) so a step by step process would be unbelievably appreciated! Any useful input is what I'm hoping for but for the brave soul who feels like typing a bit more, perhaps a step-by-step list of instructions starting from downloading Steam off the official website, would be my saving grace. If there is any more info you guys need let me know and I'll of course be happy to oblige!

For each language, indicate the length in lines of the longest working program you have written in that language. You may approximate, but only count those parts of the program that you wrote yourself. I don't quite remember that, and I have never counted the lines of each program. Do programmers always know approximately how many lines in each of his programs, and keep record of them? What is the relation between " lines of the longest working program " in a language and familiarity with it? Typically, how many lines will indicate the programmer being excellent, good, fair, or unfamiliar with the language? Is knowing "lines of the longest working program" really helpful?

• Cron doesn't execute one of the scheduled jobs

  I'm using a lubuntu desktop, distribution Ubuntu 13.10, i686. This is my problem: in the job list scheduled by cron a job hasn't effect, but in /var/log/syslog its execution is traced. This is the relative log line: Jun 4 09:06:01 kiosk CRON[14189]: (root) CMD (/usr/bin/xinput set-prop 12 --type=float "Coordinate Transformation Matrix" 0 -1 1 1 0 0 0 0 1 /tmp/mybackup.log) This job should rotate touchscreen mapping. I try different solutions: I substitute in crontab the with bash -c "", I set "export DISPLAY=:0.0" ("for Graphics related job in Unix Environment we need to set first the DISPLAY...") before the command,...and many other! I know there are a lots of details affect cron execution (path, environment variables, special character and other) and I have no more idea by now :( Could some gentleman suggest me an idea? where can I find the problem? • Gparted not working in live CD (usb)

  Using ubuntu 10.10 live usb. When atempting to open gparted (sudo gparted in a terminal), its window gets stuck a few seconds and disappears (i noticed that it closes when it's searching for /dev/sda/ partitions). After a while a window appears telling gparted closed unexpectedly and asking to restart it. Choosing this option won't do any effect. Typing sudo fdisk -l in a terminal does show a list of the drives and partitons correctly. Any ideas? Thanks.

  I have a question about Software Architecture, anyone can help me or give me some hints currently, I have a J2EE project which deploys in a server, I should a Java Standard project(J2SE) should run 24 hours x 7 days to monitor something it could not run separately, because the Java Project shared the some same classes such as Java Bean classes with the J2EE project maybe my design is not correct, can anyone suggest me what should I do? Using SOA? is this correct? my current solution is run this java project using a bash, but I dont think it is then best idea. I list my class packages com.company.alteck com.company.altronics com.company.gamming com.company.jaycar com.company.jup com.company.rpg com.company.sansai com.company.wiretech com.company.yatsal com.ebay.api com.ebay.bean com.ebay.credential com.ozsstock.finals com.ozstock.adapter com.ozstock.aspectj com.ozstock.model com.ozstock.persistence com.ozstock.service com.ozstock.suppliers my structure likes this, all the packages contains "company" should run separately, but depends on the model bean class. can anyone give me some hints to redesign?

• VS2010 tip: Cannot find the HttpUtility on .NET 4.0?

  Now that Visual Studio 2010 is here with more options and better colors, there are a few things that have changed a little and might confused you a bit. For example the good HttpUtility, if you are creating a Windows Console application or a Windows Service and you want to use that awesome class full of goodies, you would try to go to reference and add System.Web.dll, yet in the list that dll will be missing. So did they removed that dll in .NET 4? Not really, still there however there are not profiles...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • Changing the priority of Gnome Shell

  I want to give Gnome-Shell the highest priority, but I couldn't change the priority on the System Monitor, an error messeage says: Can't change priority's process with pid 2841 to -5. Access denied I tried the following commands: gksu gnome-system-monitor But I can't find Gnome-Shell on the processes list, so I tried "renice command", like this: sudo renice -15 2841 And finally got this problem, the Gnome-Shell's PID always changes, it's not the same PID numbers, so I have to change the priority every time I start up my system. Can anyone help me? Thanks.

• How can I really master a programming language?

  I know that learning a language, you can simply buy a book, follow the examples, and whenever possible try the exercises. But what I'm really looking is how to master the language once you've learned it. Now I know that experience is one major factor, but what about learning the internals of the language, what is the underlying structure, etc. There are articles out there saying read this book, read that book, make this game and that game. But to me this doesn't mean to master a language. I want to be able to read other people's code and understand it, no matter how hard that is. To understand when to use a function and when another, etc etc. The list could go on and on but I believe I've made the point. :) And finally, take whatever language as an example if needed, though best would be if C was taken as an example.

• How could your company's learning/development department best serve you?

  I'll preface my question with a disclaimer - I am not an engineer, I'm just someone who works with them full-time, in a learning and development capacity. Given that, one of the comments I get regularly from the engineers I'm tasked with developing is that they feel that they're having solutions (both technical and non-technical) for development "pushed" at them vs. anyone from my field consulting with them to determine what they really need. So my question is - if you could give your company a list of the top 3-5 things they could do - in a classroom, or elsewhere - to develop meaningful skills that would help you be a better engineer, a better employee, and one more likely to STAY with the company for the long haul, what would make the cut and why?
