• windows live playback left and right audio channel

  I have a multichannel (4x stereo) audiocard (m-audio delta1010lt) and want to playback /playthru some of the channels live. But I am only able to playback/playthru the left channel on each stereo-input (CH1, CH3, CH5, CH7). For CH2,CH4,CH6,CH8 I see the Windows Volume-Indicator going up and down in the Windows Record-Audiosettings but I don't hear any playback sound. Is there a way to playback/playthru all input channels?

• Total RAM % from perfmon Windows Server 2008 R2

  I am trying to find a good way to get available RAM percentage from perfmon. I can get Available Mbytes but I can't find any way to get the total installed memory on the server or what is in use via perfmon. I can obviously alert on GB but each of my servers have different total RAM so not a great alert. The way I understand % Committed Bytes is this includes page files on disk so this is not a good indicator. Any help would be appreciated.

• Database model for keeping track of likes/shares/comments on blog posts over time

  My goal is to keep track of the popular posts on different blog sites based on social network activity at any given time. The goal is not to simply get the most popular now, but instead find posts that are popular compared to other posts on the same blog. For example, I follow a tech blog, a sports blog, and a gossip blog. The tech blog gets waaay more readership than the other two blogs, so in raw numbers every post on the tech blog will always out number views on the other two. So lets say the average tech blog post gets 500 facebook likes and the other two get an average of 50 likes per post. Then when there is a sports blog post that has 200 fb likes and a gossip blog post with 300 while the tech blog posts today have 500 likes I want to highlight the sports and gossip blog posts (more likes than average vs tech blog with more # of likes but just average for the blog) The approach I am thinking of taking is to make an entry in a database for each blog post. Every x minutes (say every 15 minutes) I will check how many likes/shares/comments an entry has received on all the social networks (facebook, twitter, google+, linkeIn). So over time there will be a history of likes for each blog post, i.e post 1234 after 15 min: 10 fb likes, 4 tweets, 6 g+ after 30 min: 15 fb likes, 15 tweets, 10 g+ ... ... after 48 hours: 200 fb likes, 25 tweets, 15 g+ By keeping a history like this for each blog post I can know the average number of likes/shares/tweets at any give time interval. So for example the average number of fb likes for all blog posts 48hrs after posting is 50, and a particular post has 200 I can mark that as a popular post and feature/highlight it. A consideration in the design is to be able to easily query the values (likes/shares) for a specific time-frame, i.e. fb likes after 30min or tweets after 24 hrs in-order to compute averages with which to compare against (or should averages be stored in it's own table?) If this approach is flawed or could use improvement please let me know, but it is not my main question. My main question is what should a database scheme for storing this info look like? Assuming that the above approach is taken I am trying to figure out what a database schema for storing the likes over time would look like. I am brand new to databases, in doing some basic reading I see that it is advisable to make a 3NF database. I have come up with the following possible schema. Schema 1 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id ( primary key(pk) ) url title Table: Social Activity activity_id (pk) url (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value timestamp This was my initial instinct (base on my very limited db knowledge). As far as I under stand this schema would be 3NF? I searched for designs of similar database model, and found this question on stackoverflow, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11216080/data-structure-for-storing-height-and-weight-etc-over-time-for-multiple-users . The scenario in that question is similar (recording weight/height of users overtime). Taking the accepted answer for that question and applying it to my model results in something like: Schema 2 (same as above, but break down the social activity into 2 tables) DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: Social Measurement measurement_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp Table: Social stat stat_id (pk) measurement_id (fk) type (i.e. facebook,twitter,g+) value The advantage I see in schema 2 is that I will likely want to access all the values for a given time, i.e. when making a measurement at 30min after a post is published I will simultaneous check number of fb likes, fb shares, fb comments, tweets, g+, linkedIn. So with this schema it may be easier get get all stats for a measurement_id corresponding to a certain time, i.e. all social stats for post 1234 at time x. Another thought I had is since it doesn't make sense to compare number of fb likes with number of tweets or g+ shares, maybe it makes sense to separate each social measurement into it's own table? Schema 3 DB Popular Posts Table: Post post_id (pk) url title Table: fb_likes fb_like_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: fb_shares fb_shares_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: tweets tweets__id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value Table: google_plus google_plus_id (pk) post_id (fk) timestamp value As you can see I am generally lost/unsure of what approach to take. I'm sure this typical type of database problem (storing measurements overtime, i.e temperature statistic) that must have a common solution. Is there a design pattern/model for this, does it have a name? I tried searching for "database periodic data collection" or "database measurements over time" but didn't find anything specific. What would be an appropriate model to solve the needs of this problem?

• In Social Relationship Management, the Spirit is Willing, but Execution is Weak

  In our final talk in this series with Aberdeen’s Trip Kucera, we wanted to find out if enterprise organizations are actually doing anything about what they’re learning around the importance of communicating via social and using social listening for a deeper understanding of customers and prospects. We found out that if your brand is lagging behind, you’re not alone. Spotlight: How was Aberdeen able to find out if companies are putting their money where their mouth is when it comes to implementing social across the enterprise? Trip: One way to think about the relative challenges a business has in a given area is to look at the gap between “say” and “do.” The first of those words reveals the brand’s priorities, while the second reveals their ability to execute on those priorities. In Aberdeen’s research, we capture this by asking firms to rank the value of a set of activities from one on the low end to five on the high end. We then ask them to rank their ability to execute those same activities, again on a one to five, not effective to highly effective scale. Spotlight: And once you get their self-assessments, what is it you’re looking for? Trip: There are two things we’re looking for in this analysis. The first is we want to be able to identify the widest gaps between perception of value and execution. This suggests impediments to adoption or simply a high level of challenge, be it technical or otherwise. It may also suggest areas where we can expect future investment and innovation. Spotlight: So the biggest potential pain points surface, places where they know something is critical but also know they aren’t doing much about it. What’s the second thing you look for? Trip: The second thing we want to do is look at specific areas in which high-performing companies, the Leaders, are out-executing the Followers. This points to the business impact of these activities since Leaders are defined by a set of business performance metrics. Put another way, we’re correlating adoption of specific business competencies with performance, looking for what high-performers do differently. Spotlight: Ah ha, that tells us what steps the winners are taking that are making them winners. So what did you find out? Trip: Generally speaking, we see something of a glass curtain when it comes to the social relationship management execution gap. There isn’t a single social media activity in which more than 50% of respondents indicated effectiveness, which would be a 4 or 5 on that 1-5 scale. This despite the fact that 70% of firms indicate that generating positive social media mentions is valuable or very valuable, a 4 or 5 on our 1-5 scale. Spotlight: Well at least they get points for being honest. The verdict they’re giving themselves is that they just aren’t cutting it in these highly critical social development areas. Trip: And the widest gap is around directly engaging with customers and/or prospects on social networks, which 69% of firms rated as valuable but only 34% of companies say they are executing well. Perhaps even more interesting is that these two are interdependent since you’re most likely to generate goodwill on social through happy, engaged customers. This data also suggests that social is largely being used as a broadcast channel rather than for one-to-one engagement. As we’ve discussed previously, social is an inherently personal media. Spotlight: And if they’re still using it as a broadcast channel, that shows they still fail to understand the root of social and see it as just another outlet for their ads and push-messaging. That’s depressing. Trip: A second way to evaluate this data is by using Aberdeen’s performance benchmarking. The story is both a bit different, but consistent in its own way. The first thing we notice is that Leaders are more effective in their execution of several key social relationship management capabilities, namely generating positive mentions and engaging with “influencers” and customers. Based on the fact that Aberdeen uses a broad set of performance metrics to rank the respondents as either “Leaders” (top 35% in weighted performance) or “Followers” (bottom 65% in weighted performance), from website conversion to annual revenue growth, we can then correlated high social effectiveness with company performance. We can also connect the specific social capabilities used by Leaders with effectiveness. We spoke about a few of those key capabilities last time and also discuss them in a new report: Social Powers Activate: Engineering Social Engagement to Win the Hidden Sales Cycle. Spotlight: What all that tells me is there are rewards for making the effort and getting it right. That’s how you become a Leader. Trip: But there’s another part of the story, which is that overall effectiveness, even among Leaders, is muted. There’s just one activity in which more than a majority of Leaders cite high effectiveness, effectiveness being the generation of positive buzz. While 80% of Leaders indicate “directly engaging with customers” through social media channels is valuable, the highest rated activity among Leaders, only 42% say they’re effective. • Foundation CSS Framework, how to change triangle on accodion [migrated]

  I'm using foundation framework for the first time and for the most part everything is going smoothly. I am however having some trouble with the accordion in that I need to change the open/close indicator triangle that is in use. You can see it in the docs here. I've looked through the css and found the section with the accordion on foundation.css at lines 709-719 but there is no image to change or adjust. I would like to change this icon to the one in my psd, but just can't figure out where. See attached screenshot for what needs to be changed. I know how to make changes, in this case I just can't find where to make the change.

• Ubuntu 12.04, Can hear the sound but Sound option in settings shows no sound card

  I have weired issue. I did a fresh installation of Ubuntu 12.04. Then I installed Nvidia drives for my graphics card. I executed the command "modprobe nvidia" after installing the Nvidia drivers and rebooted. After reboot, sound indicator in top panel is disabled and I can't control the volume from there. I opened Settings Sound and it does not show any sound card installed. However, I can hear the sound. Please help. • keyboard layout switching on restart

  I have two keyboard layouts that I use, My default keyboard is an USA layout, with a secondary Slovenian layout. I use the Slovenian layout only when I need some special characters when writing emails and such. But my problem is this: Every time I reboot my computer, the layout indicator shows I am on the USA layout, but the actual keyboard layout is Slovenian. Then I normally have to switch from USA to Slovenian and back, to get the layout I want. Is there anything I can do about this? I don't restart my computer often, but when I do I forget about that, and typing the passwords like that doesn't work.

• USA keyboard layout keeps getting added on login

  I use the USA International keyboard layout. Every time I log in, the USA layout gets added to my list of layouts, which causes the keyboard layout indicator to be displayed. How can I stop the USA layout from being added? Additional info: I'm running Natty. Until recently, I had all four layout slots filled. Recently I changed from SCIM to iBus. With this change, I no longer need multiple layouts since iBus better handles my needs. So, I don't want both indicators (iBus and Keyboard layout) showing up.

• Good baseline size for an A* Search grid?

  I'm working on a grid based game/prototype with a continuous open map, and are currently considering what size to make each segment. I've seen some articles mention different sizes, but most of them is really old, so I'm unsure how well they map to the various platforms and performance demands common today. As for the project, it's a hybrid of 2D and 3D, but for path-finding purposes, the majority of searches would be approximately 2D. From a graphics perspective, the minimum segment size would be 64x64 in the XZ plane to minimize loaded segments while ensuring full screen coverage. I figure pathfinding would be an important indicator of maximum practical size.

• Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix on Asus Eee PC 701 4G - boot process hangs up

  I've got an old Eee PC 701 4G with the following specifications: 512 MB RAM 4GB SSD drive SM223AC 8GB SD card extension Screen resolution: 800 x 480 BIOS Revision 1101 (05/16/2008) EC Firmware version: EPC-079 Windows XP SP3 works fine on it, but I decided to switch my OS to Ubuntu. I have downloaded an Ubuntu 10.10 Netbook Remix ISO and wrote it to my FAT32 SD card using Universal-USB-Installer-1.8.3.3, as described on ubuntu.com During standard load from the SD card the boot process hangs up with black screen. If I'll press F6 while preloading Ubuntu, it sucessfully displays the boot menu, selecting language and showing 2 main commands: "Run ubuntu from USB drive" and "Insall Ubuntu". Selecting either of these commands leading to the same result - after some background work the main loading indicator is displayed ("Ubuntu" text with dotted progress bar under it), and it's progressing forever without any effect. Is Ubuntu 10.10 compatible with my Eee PC at all? How to boot it correctly?

• Bluetooth refuses to connect since update to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10

  I can no longer connect to my bluetooth speakers since since upgrading to Ubuntu Gnome 13.10 and then Gnome shell to 3.10, which never were a problem with Ubuntu Gnome 13.04. My bluetooth-dongle seems to working fine and I can even detect and add the speakers (Creative D100) but when I try to slide the button from off to on in the bluetooth settings it just slides back to off. The "bluetooth-B" in the upper right corner is also gone. I actually managed to connect after I added "Enable=Socket" under "[general]" /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf and the indicator on the speakers confirms the connection, but I cannot find the speakers in the audio settings even then. • Chainload boot of Ubuntu installed on 32GB SD card from legacy Grub boot on USB

  I have Ubuntu installed on a 32 GB SD card (in the Storage Expansion slot on an Acer Aspire One) with Grub2 installed in the same partition. I boot into legacy Grub on a USB drive and would like to boot by chainloading Grub2 from Grub (kernel/initrd or symlink booting would also be fine), but I haven't figured out how to do this from legacy Grub CLI. Output from blkid for this partition is /dev/mmcblk0p1: LABEL="Ubuntu" UUID="7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec" TYPE='ext4" / fdisk -lu information Boot indicator ID 83. Related entries in grub.cfg: search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set-root 7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec linux /boot/vmlinuz-3.5.0-17-generic root=UUID=7ceb9fa7-238c-4c5d-bb8e-2c655652ddec... initrd /boot/initrd.img-3.5.0-17-generic I can't seem to replicate this in legacy Grub. Is there any way get Grub2 to chainload? How do I set root with UUID in legacy Grub? I prefer to boot from USB. Would Grub2 on USB (copying the grub.cfg generated during installation) be an option?

• Intel HD graphic drivers for ubuntu 10.10 64bit: the brightness says its being adjusted but it isn't

  Hey all, I picked up an hp dm3t laptop with intel HD graphics and installed ubuntu 10.10 64 bit on it. It works great -- the only problem is that the brightness controls on the keyboard don't work. The brightness is always at full. When I try to adjust it down, the indicator graphic indicates that it's going down but the actual brightness doesn't change. Is there anything that I can try to make this work? I'd really appreciate any help. I asked this on superuser.com and someone commented that I should play around with the intel hd drivers. I'm a total noob -- how do I do that? What else can I try? I reallly don't want to do back to windows.

• Why is there a large discrepancy between the stackoverflow tag frequency and the TIOBE Index?

  By recently looking at the TIOBE Programming Community Index (Sep 2012) I noticed the following order: C Java Objective-C C++ C# PHP When looking at the tag frequencies of stackoverflow however, the situation is as follows: C# Java PHP JS Android jquery (JS) iphone (Objective-C) C++ (Java takes the lead when accounting for Android tagged posts w/o a Java tag). JavaScript also likely has surpassed PHP in total numbers of programmers? I realize the tag-frequencies may not be the best indicator, but it is likely a sufficient measure nonetheless. What am I missing that explains this discrepancy, especially for ANSI C?

• Does seeding torrents affect the harddisk RAM caching?

  I've downloaded a lot of torrent files and while I'm seeding them, I've noticed that very often when I start the browser it's slow and the hard disk activity indicator is on. Usually when I start a program it gets cached in RAM and starting it again is very quick, and I have 3 GB of RAM so usually it stays cached nearly forever. But when my torrent client is seeding it seems that after an hour programs that I ran are no longer cached in RAM. I was thinking maybe it's because of the disk reads which the torrent client performs are cached and fill up RAM eventually. But I don't think they need to be, as they are read only once and are unlikely to be read again soon. So my questions are - is this the way I think, and if so is it possible in principle to prevent the disk reads from being cached? I can try to edit the source code of the program.

• Lenovo Bluetooth keyboard not pairing on Ubuntu 14.04

  I have a brand new Lenovo Thinkpad 14.04. I also ordered a bluetooth keyboard. When I start the bluetooth app in Ubuntu, it quickly finds the keyboard. When I try to pair with it, though, it generates a number for me to type on the keyboard. I type the number, press ENTER, and yet it fails to pair. What could be the problem here? (Incidentally, after much gnashing of teeth, I inadvertently managed to completely wipe out the Windows 8.1 that came with the computer so it's all Ubuntu now.) EDIT: Hmm: I see a lock on the Bluetooth indicator. This sounds like it could be related. Not sure what to do about it. I didn't see anything about locking in the bluetooth app. I'm a bluetooth noob, by the way.

• Permanently disabling touchpad in ubuntu 12.04

  I'm looking for a way to permanently disable the touchpad in ububtu 12.04 (my computer is a Lenovo Thinkpad Edge on which it isn't possible to disable it in the bios). I tried the applications GPointingDeviceSettings and synaptiks 0.8.1 as well as the applets touchpad-indicator and Jupiter. None of these does the trick of disabling the touchpad permanently. Jupiter comes closest - it remembers that I have disabled the touchpad after restart - but when I login after the computer has been in suspend mode, the touchpad is enabled again. Can anyone help me in disabling the touchpad possibly at a lower level so it won't in any way be enabled unless I choose to enable it? I'm totally new to linux so a detailed explanation would be much appreciated ... The links, so far, doesn't address my question. I have no problem turning the touchpad off and making it stay off after reboot but when I login after the computer has been in an altered power mode it's on again. Isn't there a way to permanently disable a device like touchpad?

  A disconcertingly high number of new technologies/paradigms are overhyped (as is evident from replies to this question). Combine this with the fact that being early adopter is inherently risky. This makes evaluation of technology before adoption critical. So how exactly early adopters among you go about it. I can think of following general criteria. For early adoption technology must address previously unaddressed issue and/or For acceptance beyond early adoption technology should address performance One indicator that something is not right is when there is too much of jargon for technology which is either irrelevant or there is no evidence to back it up What is your opinion. Update: 4. BTW, the biggest reason to fear technology is when it is imposed by the tech-unaware management based entirely on number of buzzwords.

• In WPF, should I base my converters on types or use-cases?

  I'm looking for some advice on how to write my WPF value converters. The way I'm currently writing them, they are very specific, like (bool?,bool) = Brush, i.e. I'm writing each converter for a specific use case, in this case, the Brush is bound to an indicator showing equality information between the bool? and the bool. This obviously makes re-use very hard and I end up with a quite large list of converters. Should I strive to write my converters in a more general way? Can I?
