• Upgrade MySQL to 5.5 on Lucid, upgrade server to Precise or switch to Percona?

  Looking into upgrading mysql on our development server to which is running 10.04 so is stuck at MySQL 5.1, as it appears there is no apt-get support for upgrading to 5.5 except by certain 3rd party PPAs. So I'm looking for which route to take and what other people have done: a) Follow a couple year old guide to manually install MySQL 5.5 and then invest ongoing time into manually downloading and installing security updates every month or two? b) Upgrade 10.04 to 12.04, and from other peoples experience I work with spend several days working out the kinks of that large upgrade, then I'll have access to mysql 5.5 and easy apt-get installation of future security updates? c) Switch from MySQL to Percona Server 5.5 and get all the benefits of that version of mysql, plus easy apt-get updates with their PPA? d) Something else?

• 12.10 sound resumes only after Suspend

  I installed the 12.10 yesterday and like 12.04 there was no sound, I have an ACER 4830 TG. I noticed that the HDMI output is working fine, but Speaker or Headphone isn't working. So I did the following: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-audio-dev sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get dist-upgrade and still couldn't get the sound. Then I found the temp fix for this issue which is to Suspend the machine completely and resume. However, after restart the same thing happens. Is there a solution to this issue?

  I want to add a weather extension to my gnome3 toolbar but I cant get anything working. I am using ubuntu 12.10 with gnome3. I tryed to add this sudo add-apt-repository ppa:webupd8team/gnome3 sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gnome-shell-extensions-weather but the last command doest work it says that it cant locate such file. I installed this https://launchpad.net/weather-indicator. But I cant seem to get it to show on the gnome toolbar. It only shows here http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/4108/weatherhl.png.   I want to install gcc compiler 4.7 to use c++11 features. I have looked on the internet for instructions, and I found in several websites these steps: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:Ubuntu-toolchain-r/test sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install gcc-4.7 g++-4.7 The problem is that my console freezes when adding the ppa. At first I thought it was due to having an old Ubuntu version (11.04). So I have upgraded to 11.10 and then 12.04, and everything seems to work OK. But still having the same problem. Any help?

  Possible Duplicate: How do I upgrade to the development release (aka. Ubuntu+1)? I was suggested these commands when I searched for it on Google: sudo sed -i 's/precise/quantal/g' /etc/apt/sources.list sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade But, I don't know whether that works or not. So my question is: How to upgrade 12.04 to the 12.10 daily build? How to rollback to 12.04 if the daily build breaks? You might ask me why I want to try something like that... it's probably because I want to check out all the new upgrades that have been done in quantal. Another bonus question: If I select the "precise-proposed" updates in Update Manager, how close will my 12.04 come off to the 12.10? Are these precise proposed updates same as "quantal-proposed"? What are the differences?

• 12.04 + Alienware M11x R2 + Bumblebee 3.0 = low resolution only

  I had a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 on my Alienware M11x, and it worked with the native monitor resolution of 1366x768. In trying to get the Optimus chipset working, I installed Bumblebee 3.0. Now, I am only offered 640x480 for my monitor resolution. Graphically, Unity 3D appears to be working now, instead of the Unity 2D I had before, so something went right, but I don't know how I can get it to offer me any higher resolutions than 640x480. I've looked up many pages that address this topic, but nothing that I've seen suggested has worked. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:bumblebee/stable sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get install bumblebee-nvidia was the latest thing I tried. I've tried some variants of this, I've been sure to uninstall nvidia drivers prior to reinstalling Bumblebee and various video drivers. Does anyone have any clue as to how I can get back to native resolution?

  I'm actually trying to upgrade my Ubuntu 11.04 server to 12.04, but I have to go through 11.10 first, right? Well, do-release-upgrade is failing miserably. Here are some representative screenshots: Screenshot 1 Screenshot 2 Screenshot 3 Screenshot 4 And finally... Yeah. I found this question, which appears to have similar errors, but I've tried all of the suggestions given there and nothing has changed. I tried running apt-get dist-upgrade; it churned for a while and eventually came back with "Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?" Ran apt-get update and got much the same kinds of error messages I got from do-release-upgrade. Any ideas/suggestions/solutions? Should I try downloading & upgrading from the CD instead? I'm glad to provide any further information I've forgotten.

  When profiling a Haskell program written in GHC, the names of typeclass functions are mangled in the .prof file to distinguish one instance's implementations of them from another. How can I demangle these names to find out which type's instance it is? For example, suppose I have the following program, where types Fast and Slow both implement Show: import Data.List (foldl') sum' = foldl' (+) 0 data Fast = Fast instance Show Fast where show _ = show $ sum' [1 .. 10] data Slow = Slow instance Show Slow where show _ = show $ sum' [1 .. 100000000] main = putStrLn (show Fast ++ show Slow) I compile with -prof -auto-all -caf-all and run with +RTS -p. Is it be faster with using 1 tcp socket (for send and recv) or with using 2 uni-directed tcp sockets? The test for this task is very like NetPIPE network benchmark - measure latency and bandwidth for sizes from 2^1 up to 2^13 bytes, each size sent and received 3 times at least (in teal task the number of sends is greater. both processes will be sending and receiving, like ping-pong maybe). • What is the most efficient way of associating information with a Type in .Net?

  I want to associate custom data to a Type, and retrieve that data in run-time, blasingly fast. This is just my imagination, of my perfect world: var myInfo = typeof(MyClass).GetMyInformation(); this would be very fast... of course this does not exist! If it did I would not be asking. hehe ;) This is the way using custom attributes: var myInfo = typeof(MyClass).GetCustomAttribute("MyInformation"); this is slow because it requires a lookup of the string "MyInformation" This is a way using a Dictionary<Type, MyInformation: var myInfo = myInformationDictionary[typeof(MyClass)]; This is also slow because it is still a lookup of 'typeof(MyClass)'. I know that dictionary is very fast, but this is not enough... it is not as fast as calling a method. It is not even the same order of speed. I am not saying I want it to be as fast as a method call. I want to associate information with a type and access it as fast as possible. I am asking whether there is a better way, or event a best way of doing it. Any ideas?? Thanks!

• Is there a way to change the default sound volume on startup in windows?

  I've got a Creative X-Fi Titanium running on Windows 8, which works great, but the drivers have this weird quirk where it sets my headphones volume at 30% every time I boot if I have fast boot enabled. If I disable fast boot then it remembers my previous volume but I don't want to disable fast boot any more (I have an SSD, I want to use it :P) I've asked a similar question here before but as you can see the only "solution" was to disable fast boot, which I don't want to do anymore. Is there a command line tool that will let me set my volume or something similar that I can chuck in a batch file and run on startup, or anything else similar?
