    Hi all, As far as I have read, scaling a big image to draw it on the iPhone is very slow [1]. I really need to do it fast and I wonder why zoom goes so fast on the iPhone while code scaling is so slow. Any idea? By the way, any fast way to do scaling?   • PHP pages working slow from time to time

    I have VPS with limit of 2GB of ram and 8 CPU cores. I have 5 sites on that VPS (one of them is just for testing, no visitors exept me). All 5 sites are image galleries, like wallpaper sites. Last week I noticed problem on one site (main domain, used for name servers, and also with most traffic, visitors). That site has two image galleries, one is old static html gallery made few years ago and another, main, is powered by ZENPhoto CMS. Also I have that same gallery CMS on another two sites on that same VPS (on one running site and on one just for testing site). On other two sites I have diferent PHP driven gallery. Problem is that after some time (it vary from 10 minutes to few hours after apache restart), loading of pages on main site becomes very slow, or I get 503 Service Temporarily Unavailable error. So pages becomes unavailable. But just that part with new CMS gallery, old part of site with static html pages are working fast and just fine. Also other two sites with same CMS gallery and other two with different PHP driven gallery are working fine and fast at the same time. I thought it must be something with CMS on that main site, because other sites are working nice. Then I tryed to open contact and guest book pages on that main site which are outside of that CMS but also PHP pages, and they do not load too, but that same contact php scipts are working on other sites at the same time. So, when site starts to hangs, ONLY PHP generated content is not working, like I said other static pages are working. And, ONLY on that one main site I have problems. Then I need to restart Apache, after restart everything is vorking nice and fast, for some time, than again, just PHP pages on main site are becomming slower. If I do not restart apache that slowness take some time (several minutes, hours, depending ot traffic) and during that time PHP diven content is loading very slow or unavailable on that site. After sime time, on moments everything start to work and is fast again for some time, and again. In hours with more traffic PHP content is loading slowly or it is unavailable, in hours with less traffic it is sometimes fast and sometimes little bit slower than usually. And ones again, only on that main site, and only PHP driven pages, static pages are working fast even in most traffic hours also other sites with even same CMS are working fast. Currently I have about 7000 unique visitors on that site but site worked nice even with 11500 visitors per day. And about 17000 in total visitors on VPS, all sites ( about 3 pages per unique visitor).   • Java and tomcat vs ASP.NET and IIS

    Until recently I'd considered myself to be a pretty good web programmer (coming up for 10yrs commercial experience on a variety of e-commerce, static and enterprise applications). I'm self taught and have always used the Microsoft product stack (ASP, ASP.NET)... My applications are always functional, relatively bug free, but have never been lightening quick. As a frequent web user I always found this to be the norm... how fast are the websites from the big tech players (eBay, Facebook, Microsoft, IBM, Dell, Telerik etc etc) - in truth none are particularly fast. I always attributed this to "the way things are with web apps"... ...then I cam across a product called Jira from atlasian and this has stopped me in my tracks... This application is fast, and I mean blindingly fast.. too fast to time the switches between pages, fully live content, lots of images and data and cross references etc etc... I run this on an intranet, with a large application DB, and this is running on a very normal server (single processor, SATA HDD, 8GB RAM). Am I missing something?? Are my programming techniques that bad?? I am wondering if this speed gain is down to it being written in Java and running on Tomcat. Does anyone have any benchmarks to compare JSP / ASP or Tomcat / IIS??? Thanks, Mark NOTE: this isn't a blatant plug for Jira. I don't work for them or have any affiliation to them... but I would like to be able to write applications like them :)

  • Custom jQuery dropdown

    I am creating a custom simple dropdown using jQuery that hides/shows a element based on over state. The problem I have now is that when you go over the shown element it hides, you cant move your mouse in to the dropdown that was created. Any thoughts on how to fix that also, is there an easier way to do what I have?   • Jquery .Show() .Hide() not working as expected

    I'm trying to use the show and hide to display a different set of select options when a certain report type is selected. I have a couple problems with this: The .show .hide only execute properly if I pass params, slow fast, in the the first result of my conditional statement. If I take out the params or pass params in both results, only one select shows and it never changes.. here's is the code that currently kind of works. if ($('#ReportType').val() == 'PbuseExport') { $('#PbuseServices').show('fast'); $('#ReportServiceDropdown').hide('fast'); } else { $('#PbuseServices').hide(); $('#ReportServiceDropdown').show(); } After i've used this control I am taken to a differnt page. When I use the control again, it reatins the original search values and repopulates the control. Then again I only want to show one select option if a certain report is chosen.. This works correctly if the report type I originally searched on is not the "PbuseExport". If I searched on the report type "PbuseExport", then both selects show on the screen, and only until I change the report type does it show only one select. I know this probably isn't very clear.. This works with the postback. With just one panel in the selection it worked great but with two panels the sliding up happens twice (it seems to slide down unopened panels before sliding them back up again). How can I adjust this so that I can get all panels listed in the variable allPnls to slide shut ONLY if they are already open? Is there a better way of sliding the panels shut and then having a callback to have the slideToggle work? Lloyd

  • What does it mean when git pull causes a conflict but git pull --rebase doesn't?

    I'm pulling from a repository that only I have access to. As far as I know, I've only pushed to it from one repository. A couple of times, I've pulled from it and gotten this: To [email protected]:tsched_dev.git ! [rejected] master -> master (non-fast-forward) error: failed to push some refs to '[email protected]:tsched_dev.git' To prevent you from losing history, non-fast-forward updates were rejected Merge the remote changes before pushing again. See the 'Note about fast-forwards' section of 'git push --help' for details. Generally, that just means that I have to do a git pull (although all the changes should be fast-forwardable). When I do a git pull, I get conflicts. If I do a git pull --rebase, it works fine. What am I doing wrong?

    Hello, first this is no rant although its worth alone to put it on a blog... When I type very fast - having roughly 260 chars/minute - WPF`s RichTextBox starts swallowing chars and I have to stop writing that fast a = a.IsAnnoying = true; The same in a VB 5.0 RichTextBox fast as hell. Why is WPF again so great for? Customer satisfactory ? Seriously, is there something I can tweak to make RichTextBox better responding?

  • Get info from multiple files, match it and then display to end user, what is fastest?

    Hi, I need to build a website where we display data that is refreshed every 5minutes in a text file with a | separator. I currently use Java to do this. What I do now: I grab the textfile for every request through the website and process it and then display the data to the end user, this works fine, since Java can go through like 5000 lines of data fast, and when I filter it it is still extremely fast. However now the management wants the following: They added 3 textfiles with the | separator to it, and now want me to also read those files and match the information on certain fields, and if there is a match also display that information to the end user. I think soon enough, although Java is fast, I will run into trouble when 10 people want that information and I have to run through 4 total files matching the information. What can I do to make this process super fast? My Creative solutions so far: -Leave it this way, since Java is fast and end users can wait (probably less then 1second) -Have a background process that dumps new data into a MySQL database every 5minutes, since databases are extremely good at getting the same data from multiple tables.     In ubuntu 9.04, I tried to upgrade from firefox 3.0 to 3.5, by installing some apt-get packages, and there is a problem! Now firefox calls itself "Namoroka" and the firefox logo is gone and replaced by a black square in the upper bar and it says it is a development beta version. I really don't like this version, how can I go back to the stable version of firefox? I tried apt-get remove firefox-3.5 and apt-get install firefox-3.0 and that did not work. How do I go back to the stable version of firefox?

  • How can I install a headless JDK on an Ubuntu Jaunty server?

    I recently set up a build server that requires a JDK to run (for example, to compile the Java sources). The OpenJDK package in Ubuntu pulls in the OpenJDK JRE as a dependency which, in turn, depends on a large number of packages that are only relevant for graphical environments. For the standard JRE, there's a headless version of the package, but for the JDK, no. This issue has been discussed in various places before, and one solution that I found and used was this: $ apt-get --no-install-recommends -d install openjdk-6-jdk $ dpkg -i --ignore-depends=openjdk-6-jre /path/to/just-downloaded.deb While this worked, it now leaves my system with a broken dependency tree and apt-get refuses further installs untill I run apt-get -f. Is there a better solution to this?

    I'm trying to install empathy. Current version has to be installed from source, but needs a list of things that have to be installed one by one. Previous version is in repository, but blinks (opens, then right after that, closes). Previous version of the previous version: apt-cache search -showpkg empathy shows general empathy information and a telepathy too, but not the rpm file name taking the rpm file name from a Google search result, apt-get install package=empathy-2.30.1-2pclos2010 says package package (twice, really) not found installing apturl, clicking the rpm file link, opening it with apturl, installation gui starts, but fails opening the rpm file with Synaptic doesn't work opening the rpm file with /usr/bin/apt-get doesn't work What now?

Sometimes it is followed by packages and sometimes it is both preceded and post-ceded by packages.   • ubuntu12.04 hangs at checking battery state

    My 12.04 system hangs at "Checking battery state". At this stage, no commands work eg: ctrl+alt+f1, alt+f5. I ran recovery mode, I ran the command sudo mount -o remount, rw sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm and gdm was the only one installed so I didn't get a GUI screen. I have an integrated graphics card "Intel Corporation Mobile 4 chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)". So I cannot install nvidia drivers as everyone else suggests. I have gone through several similar questions but everyone suggests reconfiguring gdm or reinstalling graphic drivers. I did sudo add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates sudo apt-get update sudo apt-get upgrade to get the latest x-swat drivers. The system still hung at the same line. The other option is to reinstall ubuntu, which is out of the question, since we have a very specific install for our project where the settings are very hard to duplicate. Suggestions/Comments welcome.

  • Adding Thunderbird-stable repository gives "can't find signing_key_fingerprint" error

    I'm trying to install Thunderbird 11 on Kubuntu 10.04. I was able to do it on the machine I'm working on. To get a clean process that I can roll out to other clients, I re-installed the machine and repeated the process. This is what I did (I've left out the sudo for clarity): add-apt-repository ppa:ubuntu-mozilla-security/ppa apt-get update add-apt-repository ppa:mozilla-team/thunderbird-stable The last one resulted in this error: Error: can't find signing_key_fingerprint at https://launchpad.net/api/1.0/~mozilla-team/+archive/thunderbird-stable The machine as it was before re-installation gave no such message. It was built from the same sources. Bottomline: I got Thunderbird 11.0 to run on Kubuntu 10.04 but after re-installation, adding the repository gives an error and won't add. Is there a way to solve the signing_key_fingerprint error?
