• Top 10 things I Learned this October

  Last week, I attended the second largest IT conference. It was Gartner Symposium IT Expo held in Orlando, Florida. Earlier this month, I also had the opportunity to be part of the largest IT conference earlier in the month – Oracle Open World . Both were gatherings for senior IT professionals – CIOs, Senior IT  and Line of Business executives, and Developers. At both events, I learned a great deal about how companies are innovating and leveraging technology.  Here are my top 10 take-aways: #10.  Everyone is talking about Social, Mobile and Cloud  - Whether listening to Gartner discuss The Nexus of Forces or listening to Oracle’s Executive Vice President Hasan Rizvi deliver Oracle Fusion Middleware General Session  -- everyone is talking about Social, Mobile Cloud, and Information – Gartner, Oracle, our customers, partners, -- everyone.   #9. SOA is NOT dead, it is more important than ever before – it is an imperative!  #8. The big question around IT security is not “what will you do IF?” but “what will you do WHEN?” #7. General Colin Powell is an IT guy! Aside from having served as National Security Advisor, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and as the U.S. Secretary of State. Gen Colin Powell was an inspirational speaker at the Gartner Symposium and it was clear he understands IT and the powerful impact it has on our society and our youth today. #6. Change will happen, we need to plan for it! #5. When everything is connected and just works, we have harnessed the power of technology. Middleware is at the heart of social, mobile and cloud. #4. Innovation is happening everywhere! Attending both IT events I was able to hear from companies of all sizes and across industries – including Tesco, Nike, Electronic Arts, Nintendo, International Speedway--  they all discussed how they are transforming their companies and their industries. #3. “One size fits all” strategy does not work instead it alienates IT and business. The PACE Layered Application Strategy is a framework that allows IT to have that Nexus of Forces conversation with the business. #2. To stay relevant, we need to hire the innovation workers, develop for that innovation layer. #1. My smartphone is the most valuable tool I own! Everyday with it, I am able to communicate via phone, email, text with family, friends, colleagues. I am able to look up directions to my hotel, make reservations at restaurants, view my calendar, take pictures, record messages, check in for flights and so much more…. • Avoid richfaces to send back javascript libraries in the ajax responses

  I'm using JSF 1.2 with Richfaces, and for every ajax request, the server is sending back the response, whichi is good, but it also contains all the links to the javascript files. I want to improve the performance so I just want the <body> to be returned, because all the javascript files are already loaded in the browser when the user logs in (my app is not restful). How can i do that? • Clip a wpf Popup at bounds of a main window

  From what I understand, the popup exists within it's own visual tree. However, I've noticed a few properties, Clip and ClipToBounds. What I am wanting to do is Visually clip a popup at the right and bottom edges of a window regardless of the fact that the popup is independent of the bounds of the window. I'm not using XAML, but if somebody knows how to do it in XAML, then that's fine. I can get to the main window using System.Windows.Application.Current.MainWindow. Is it possible from this to get a value that I can use to clip the popup? I'm assuming that if there is a value that I can use, then I would be able to bind the clipping of the popup to that value. This is really not necessary since after the popup initially opens, if the window gets moved or resized, the popup closes. So I would really only need to clip the popup when it opens. The reason I would like to do this is because although I am using a popup, I don't want it to appear as a popup that exists outside of the window. FYI this is for a popup calendar for a custom datebox. Any ideas, as well as clarification of misconceptions that I may have, would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Brandon

• Unable to regress web application from AJAX Control Toolkit 3.0 back to 1.0

  I was recently asked to stop using the Ajax Control Toolkit 3.0 in my application and need to go back to 1.0. Luckily I only have one calendar control which I don't believe will be affected by this. I have removed the reference to the 3.0 .dll and added a reference to the 1.0 .dll. • Advice on database design / SQL for retrieving data with chronological order

  I am creating a database that will help keep track of which employees have been on a certain training course. I would like to get some guidance on the best way to design the database. Specifically, each employee must attend the training course each year and my database needs to keep a history of all the dates on which they have attend the course in the past. The end user will use the software as a planning tool to help them book future course dates for employees. When they select a given employee they will see: (a) Last attendance date (b) Projected future attendance date(i.e. last attendance date + 1 calendar year) In terms of my database, any given employee may have multiple past course attendance dates: EmpName AttandanceDate Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 My question is what is the best way to set up the database to make it easy to retrieve the most recent course attendance date? In the example above, the most recent would be 8th Jan 2010. Is there a good way to use SQL to sort by date and pick the MAX date? My other idea was to add a column called ‘MostRecent’ and just set this to TRUE. EmpName AttandanceDate MostRecent Joe Bloggs 1st Jan 2007 False Joe Bloggs 4th Jan 2008 False Joe Bloggs 3rd Jan 2009 False Joe Bloggs 8th Jan 2010 True I wondered if this would simplify the SQL i.e. SELECT Joe Bloggs WHERE MostRecent = ‘TRUE’ Also, when the user updates a given employee’s attendance record (i.e. with latest attendance date) I could use SQL to: Search for the employee and set the MostRecent value to FALSE Add a new record with MostRecent set to TRUE? Would anybody recommended either method over the other? Or do you have a completely different way of solving this problem?

• Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id.

  I'm working in ASP .NET dynamic data. In one of my edit controls I wanted to allow the user to add records from a related table to the current page. (Literally, if you are on the orders page, you would be allowed to add a new customer to the system on this page as well, and then associate it with that order). So, I have a DetailsView set to InsertMode, nested inside of an UpdatePanel, which is shown by a ModalPopupExtender which is invoked when 'add new' is clicked. This doohickey works the first time i execute this process, that is, a customer is added (and i update the dropdown list as well). However, I realized it didn't work (properly) again until I refreshed the entire page. When I attached my debugger, my worst fears were realized (ok, not really). But an exception was being thrown: "Microsoft JScript runtime error: Sys.InvalidOperationException: Two components with the same id." Which seemed to be complaining about a Calendar Extender Control that is part of the details view. Any guidance on what's going on here would be great. Thanks.

• Mac gcc non-virtual thunk error

  I'm getting these non-virtual thunk errors only in the Deployment build of my app. It uses a private framework called Lgi. Building on 10.5.8 using XCode 3.1.4 (latest for leopard?)   I am trying to display my events from a MySQL database. I'm using the events function. My XML file being returned is pretty basic. I've looked at all of the FullCalendar questions and most of them talk about JSON and point to the documentation for JSON. I can't use JSON. I have to go XML. Can you tell me where I'm off. Here is a sample of what my xml looks like: Grow Your Business on the Web 2010-06-05T9:30 2010-06-05T12:30 O The whole file is prefaced with a tag and closed with a tag.   Working around an issue where my jquery datepicker does not display after postback within an update panel. The textbox (trigger) for the calendar is contained within a control, which is contained within an update panel. However, when I click on the date, I get an error: inst is null. • LGPL and Dual Licensing Ajax Library

  Hi guys, I'm the previous founder of Gaiaware and Gaia Ajax Widgets and when I used to work there we had this rhetoric (which I have confirmed with some very smart FOSS people is correct) that when using a GPL Ajax library you're basically "distributing" the JavaScript which in turn makes the GPL viral clause kick in and forces people to purchase a proprietary license if they're going to build Closed Source stuff... So now I'm the the LGPL world here with Ra-Ajax which is an LGPL licensed library and I've got no intentions of creating a GPL licensed library since I believe strongly in that the LGPL is the "enabler" of the Open Web to prevail. But something interesting have happened which I think might still give me a "business model" here which is the Linking clause of the LGPL which I think goes something like this (pseudo); "If you link to an LGPL licensed thing you get no restrictions on your own derived works"... But so we started creating something we're calling Ajax Starter-Kits which effectively is a "Project Kickstarter" where you can download a finished project/solution which basically enables you to start out with some pre-done boiler plate code for problems such as Ajax DataGrids, Ajax Calendar Applications, Ajax TreeView Applications etc. And the funny thing is that our users would NOT "link" to these, they would effectively BE our users applications... So to wrap up my question. Would this force users of our LGPL licensed Ajax Starter-Kits to LGPL license their own work? Basically if it does we have a business model (and I get very happy) if not I'd just have to hope people would still like to pay us those $29 for our Starter-Kits to support the project... ;) Help rewarded with extreme gratitude...

  So I want to add an iCal file to a web page, so that people can add an event to their calendars. But when I view the event in my calendar (Outlook 2007) I want to see everyone who will be attending. How can I do that? I just started experimenting with this, I used Outlook's Save As to create an iCal file for a single event. That works, I can link to that file and other people can add the event to their calendars. But it doesn't tell me who has added it. • Unable to convert from Julian INT date to regular TSQL Datetime

  Help me Stackoverflow, I'm close to going all "HULK SMASH" on my keyboard over this issue. I have researched carefully but I'm obviously not getting something right. I am working with a Julian dates referenced from a proprietary tool (Platinum SQL?), though I'm working in SQL 2005. I can convert their "special" version of Julian into datetime when I run a select statement. Unfortunately it will not insert into a datetime column, I get the following error when I try: The conversion of a char data type to a datetime data type resulted in an out-of-range datetime value. So I can't setup datetime criteria for running a report off of the Stored Procedure. Original Value: 733416 Equivalent Calendar Value: 01-09-2009 Below is my code... I'm so close but I can't quite see what's wrong, I need my convert statement to actually convert the Julian value (733416) into a compatible TSQL DATETIME value.
