• Smalltalk web development software

  I try to be very cautious with this question. There are at least three different web-development frameworks available in Smalltalk. The most prominent seems to be Seaside but there is also AIDA/Web and Iliad. They seems to be very similiar, but this impresson may be wrong. I wonder who has tried the different tools and can share the pros/cons of the different packages. A more concrete question would be, do yo know of let's say any software in the bookkeeing area which has choosen to use either of the three (or other) web development frameworks.

• IoC from start to finish

  I'm quite sure that IoC is the way to go for my application. There are a ton of articles and even questions here on SO that discuss the different containers. I've read several blogs today with partial examples. I am personally leaning towards starting with the CommonServiceLocator and Unity as two way to solve the same problem -- I just need a bunch of assemblies to get data from a database, which I assume is what needs to be injected everywhere. I've yet to find any sites that really take a problem from beginning to end, with concrete code examples. For example, I've yet to find one that discusses an IServiceLocator and how to actually register it (or do whatever is required to make it known). What are your favorite posts / articles / SO questions that can take a noob from start to finish with the implementation?

  I'm upgrading some code to Java 5 and am clearly not understanding something with Generics. I have other classes which implement Comparable once, which I've been able to implement. But now I've got a class which, due to inheritance, ends up trying to implement Comparable for 2 types. Here's my situation: I've got the following classes/interfaces: interface Foo extends Comparable<Foo> interface Bar extends Comparable<Bar> abstract class BarDescription implements Bar class FooBar extends BarDescription implements Foo With this, I get the error 'interface Comparable cannot be implemented more than once with different arguments...' Why can't I have a compareTo(Foo foo) implemented in FooBar, and also a compareTo(Bar) implemented in BarDescription? Isn't this simply method overloading?

Microsoft says, "In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to." And yet extension methods form the foundation of Linq; in fact, Linq was the reason extension methods were created. Are there specific design criteria where using extension methods are perferred over inheritance or composition? Under what criteria are they discouraged?

To make it concrete, let's create a function foo with named arguments a, b, and c, which default to 1, 2, and 3, respectively. For comparison, here's a version of foo with positional arguments: foo[a_:1, b_:2, c_:3] := bar[a,b,c] Here is sample input and output for the named-arguments version of foo: foo[] --> bar[1,2,3] foo[b->7] --> bar[1,7,3] foo[a->6, b->7, c->8] --> bar[6,7,8] It should of course also be easy to have positional arguments before the named arguments.

• Using JavaScript eval to parse JSON

  Question: I'm using eval to parse a JSON return value from one of my WebMethods. I prefer not to add jquery-json because the transfer volume is already quite large. So I parse the JSON return value with eval. Now rumors go that this is insecure. Why ? Nobody can modify the JSOn return value unless they hack my server, in which case I would have a much larger problem anyway. And if they do it locally, JavaScript only executes in their browser. So I fail to see where the problem is. • Get highest frequency terms from Lucene index

  Hello! i need to extract terms with highest frequencies from several lucene indexes, to use them for some semantic analysis. So, I want to get maybe top 30 most occuring terms(still did not decide on threshold, i will analyze results) and their per-index counts. I am aware that I might lose some precision because of potentionally dropped duplicates, but for now, lets say i am ok with that. So for the proposed solutions, (needless to say maybe) speed is not important, since I would do static analysis, I would put accent on simplicity of implementation because im not so skilled with Lucene (not the programming guru too :/ ) and cant wrap my mind around many concepts of it.. I can not find any code samples from something similar, so all concrete advices (code, pseudocode, links to code samples...) I will apretiate very much!!! Thank you!

• ASP.NET MVC UpdateModel - fields vs properties??

  I refactored some common properties into a base class and immediately my model updates started failing. UpdateModel() and TryUpdateModel() did not seem to update inherited public properties. I cannot find detailed info on MSDN nor Google as to the rules or semantics of these methods. The docs are terse (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd470933.aspx), simply stating: Updates the specified model instance using values from the controller's current value provider. SOLVED: MVC.NET does indeed handle inherited properties just fine. This turned out to have nothing to do with inheritance. My base class was implemented with public fields, not properties. Switching them to formal properties (adding {get; set; }) was all I needed. This has bitten me before, I keep wanting to use simple, public fields. I would argue that fields and properties are syntactically identical, and could be argued to be semantically equivalent, for the user of the class.

  In formal specifications based on abstract algebraic types and equational theory you use formulas of equational theory to specify theory. System which will satisfy those constraints is called in formal logic a model. Modeling is process of creating a model, which abstracts of some aspects, which are unnecessary details for a specific case. So concrete system has to adhere to created model in observed aspects. Programming is a process of creating a program which will have specific behaviour - will perform specific algorithms - and programming languages through different paradigms enable us to think in a certain specific way, which abstracts of some details, usually machine specific ones. So could we be doing all those things at the same time, because they are principially the same? Is declarative programming the nearest attempt to do that? Could we use some sort f programming languages which will be good for programming as well as for modeling and specification?

• Symfony 1.3 and forms: the password changes when i click on 'Save', why??

  Hi, i have installed sfDoctrineGuardUser and have created this model that inherits sfGuardUser model: Usuario: inheritance: extends: sfGuardUser type: simple columns: nombre_apellidos: string(60) sexo: boolean fecha_nac: date provincia: string(60) localidad: string(255) email_address: string(255) avatar: string(255) avatar_mensajes: string(255) I have also created a module called 'miembros' based on that model. Well, I log normally through sfGuardAuth/signin, then i go to "miembros/edit/id/$id_of_the_member_i_used_to_log_in" and push 'Save' button. Then i logout. If i try to log in again, it says: "The username and/or password is invalid". Later, i have realized that when click 'Save' the value of the field 'password' changes (well its encrypted version). So that is the reason why i can not then log in. But, why the value of the password change when i click on 'Save' ??? Regards Javi

• Advantages of three-way automatic merging vs. two-way

  I'm interested in understanding two-way and three-way merging of source code files. Based on what I've read, two-way merging has some "crippling weaknesses" compared to three-way merging. What I'd really like to see are one or two simple, concrete examples of cases where three-way merging is able to automatically merge something from a branch to the trunk without producing conflicts, while two-way merging falls down and requires a bunch of manual intervention to get the code merged. Any links to blog posts or even references to books would be appreciated (yes, I have Googled this for an hour or so). Thanks!

  I have started to look at Event-Based Components (EBCs), a programming method currently being explored by Ralf Wesphal in Germany, in particular. This is a really interesting and promising way to architect a software solution, and gets close to the age-old idea of being able to stick software components together like Lego :) A good starting point is the Channel 9 video here, and there is a fair bit of discussion in German at the Google Group on EBCs. I am however looking for more concrete examples - while the ideas look great, I am finding it hard to translate them into real code for anything more than a trivial project. Does anyone know of any good code examples (in C# preferably), or any more good sites where EBCs are discussed?

  Authlogin by default is supposed to auto login when the user's persistence token changes. • .NET JAXB equivalent?

  Is there an equivalent library for JAXB in .NET? I am trying to convert an XML I get to a .NET class. I have the XSD, but not sure how to convert the XML received into a concrete Class? I used the XSD tool to generate a class from the schema, but what I want to to convert the XML I receive on the fly to a object that I can work with in code. I've seen the thread here that deals with this, but my query is - I want the object created to contain the data that I receive in the XML (i.e. the field values must be populated).

• Managing Strategy objects with Hibernate & Spring

  This is a design question better explained with a Stack Overflow analogy: Users can earn Badges. Users, Badges and Earned Badges are stored in the database. A Badge’s logic is run by a Badge Condition Strategy. I would prefer not to have to store Badge Condition Strategies in the database, because they are complex tree structure objects. How do I associate a Badge stored in the database with its Badge Condition Strategy? I can only think of workaround solutions. For example: create 1 class per badge and use a SINGLE_TABLE inheritance strategy. Or get the badge from the database, and then programmatically lookup and inject the correct Badge Condition Strategy. Thanks for suggesting a better design.

  I've been working on my own implementation of ECMAScript for quite some time now. I have basically done everything by hand to help gain a deep understanding of the process. Repeated attempts to analyze and understand this portion of the grammar have failed so I've been working on the run time instead.   Currently have a Factory class that features a GetSelector function, which returns a concrete implementation of ISelector. I have several different classes that implement ISelector and based on a setting I would like to receive the appropriate ISelector back. public interface ISelector { string GetValue(string Params); } public class XmlSelector : ISelector { public string GetValue(string Params) { // open XML file and get value } } public static class SelectorFactory { public static ISelector GetSelector() { return new XmlSelector(); // Needs changing to look at settings } } My question is what is the best way to store the setting? I am aware of using AppSettings etc. but I'm not sure whether I want to have to store strings in the web.config and perform a switch on it - just seems to be really tightly coupled in that if a new implementation of ISelector is made, then the Factory would need to be changed. Is there any way of perhaps storing an assembly name and instantiating based on that? Thanks, Chris

I read http://doc.trolltech.com/4.5/designer-using-a-ui-file.html to use these GUI elements in my code and using multiple inheritance approach. I am introducing bookmark feature which somewhat look like http://img293.imageshack.us/img293/3041/screenshotyb.png. Now the problem I am facing is How can I show all existing bookmark folders in the drop down(say folders are in a QVector). So my main problem is how can I pass some inputs to the UI element.
