• How to Keep Video and Audio in Sync When Ripping a DVD?

  I have been using the freeware version of the WinX DVD Ripper (http://www.winxdvd.com/dvd-ripper/) to rip some DVDs. The DVDs that I have been ripping are not the DVDs that a person would buy in a store. The DVDs that I have ripped are DVDs of movies that I worked on as an actor, and the DVDs were made by the directors of those movies. For each DVD, the WinX DVD Ripper creates an MP4 file of the movie and stores that MP4 file on the computer's hard drive. Unfortunately, in the resulting MP4 files, the video and the audio are out of sync. The video is ahead of the audio. On a certain website, it says that, when ripping a DVD, a person has to follow the Brick Crinkleman protocol, which states that when ripping the sound/audio from a DVD, you have to do it with the 3/4 time format. (http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091123071551AAZ3S7G) So, who is Brick Crinkleman, and what is the 3/4 time format? And how do I implement this 3/4 time format on the WinX DVD Ripper? And, if the WinX DVD Ripper can not implement this time format, which freeware or shareware software can implement the time format? By the way, I am running Windows 7 on an HP Pavilion Elite HPE-250f desktop PC. Thank you very much for any information and help.

• Diagnosing a BSOD involving USB

  [Running Win7 Ultimate 64 bit] My new HP Pavilion Elite HPE-450t has been plagued by BSDO crashes since I got it about 5 weeks ago. The crashes are somewhat rare, sometimes not occurring for 3 or 4 days. I have spent a lot of time trying to isolate the device that could be at fault, but I have seen crashes with only the keyboard and mouse plugged in (as USB devices), and I tried two sets of keyboard/mouse, so I'm running out of ideas. :( The WhoCrashed tool gave this info about my latest BSOD: crash dump file: C:\Windows\Minidump\121310-11887-01.dmp This was probably caused by the following module: usbport.sys (USBPORT+0x2DE4E) Bugcheck code: 0xFE (0x5, 0xFFFFFA8008F571A0, 0x80863B34, 0xFFFFFA80092F2510) Error: BUGCODE_USB_DRIVER file path: C:\Windows\system32\drivers\usbport.sys product: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System company: Microsoft Corporation description: USB 1.1 & 2.0 Port Driver Bug check description: This indicates that an error has occurred in a Universal Serial Bus (USB) driver. The crash took place in a standard Microsoft module. Your system configuration may be incorrect. Possibly this problem is caused by another driver on your system which cannot be identified at this time. I looked at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff560407(VS.85).aspx, and for Parameter1 = 0x5, it says "A hardware failure has occurred due to a bad physical address found in a hardware data structure. This is not due to a driver bug". Should I conclude that it's a hardware issue in the machine itself, rather than a bad USB driver or USB device? • Hard drive spark, can it be recovered?

  Alright, so I was going to install Source Film Maker but I didn't have any space, so I decided to connect an HDD via an USB converter(image below). I shut down the machine, turned the PSU off, and connected via a Molex connector & the USB converter. I turned back on the PSU, no sparks or anything, everything normal, but when I turned on the machine, I heard some sizzing(lol?) and sparks flying and a little flame, but the PC was running fine. I pressed the power button instead pulling out the plug (I panicked) so it continued to short circuit for about 10 seconds. There's a very little part on the HDD that become ash, it's near the Molex connector and the circuit is a little black as well. I'm afraid that I will damage the HDD more so I didn't hook up the HDD after all. Do you think it's the PSU(came default with Cooler Master Elite 430, 500W) or it's the HDD(Samsung SP1203N)? P.S: I've attached the HDD same way before(like 3 months ago), and it worked. HDD burn: USB connector: Sorry for the bad image quality, taken with my phone.

• New build won't boot: some fans turning, no beep or video

  When my new system is powered up, the case fan and power supply fans turn fine. The CPU fan twitches, but never gets going. Although I've heard that with AMDs and Gigabyte motherboards that is not necessary a problem. Hard drive is spinning. However, there is absolutely no indication that anything else is happening. The motherboard, as far as I can tell, does not have an internal speaker, but I harvested one from another machine and plugged it in and still no beeps at all. The monitor screen stays black, on both the integrated VGA and DVI. This is a brand new build, and has never successfully booted. My parts are: AMD Athlon II X2 245 Regor 2.9GHz Socket AM3 65W Dual-Core Processor Model ADX245OCGQBOX - includes CPU cooler) GIGABYTE GA-MA785GPMT-UD2H AM3 AMD 785G HDMI Micro ATX AMD Motherboard - Retail G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1333 (PC3 10666) Desktop Memory Model F3-10666CL8D-4GBRM - Retail CORSAIR CMPSU-400CX 400W ATX12V V2.2 80 PLUS Certified Compatible with Core i7 Power Supply - Retail SAMSUNG Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s 3.5" Internal Hard Drive -Bare Drive COOLER MASTER Elite 341 RC-341C-KKN1-GP Black Steel MicroATX Mid Tower Computer Case - Retail I also have a DVD burner, but it acts the same whether that is plugged in or not. I'm using the on board video. What I've tried so far: I've switched power supplies, with no difference. I've tried different monitors (of which all are working on other machines) with no difference. I have tried putting it one memory module at a time, with no difference. I have tried the absolute minimum I can think of (power supply into motherboard, power button ONLY plugged into front panel, CPU fan plugged in), with no difference. I appreciate any ideas anyone might have. Do I need to RMA the motherboard? This is my first build, so there might be something obvious. I was very careful in assembly with static; I'm confident nothing was zapped during assembly.

• Why does my PC successfully boot only when unplugged for more than a few minutes?

  I have an HP Pavilion Elite desktop computer, model HPE-490t. I like it because it didn’t cost too much, boots itself from an SSD, came with 16 GB of RAM, and has 6 CPU cores for editing video and camera RAW images. It has one behavioral quirk that I cannot explain, however. The recent power interruptions here in the Northeast got the machine into a state where it could not be restarted. It would power up for a second or two, shut down, and then power up again, never being able to get to the point of showing anything on the monitor. I unplugged it for about 10 seconds and plugged it back in. Same behavior (fails to boot). I unplugged it and walked away for an hour, then plugged it back in and it worked perfectly! I think something similar happened after installing a second hard disk drive into this machine. So the question is why does the computer behave differently depending on how long it has been unplugged? Where is energy stored that affects the machine’s ability to boot? Capacitors in the power supply? Battery on the motherboard (there is one for the clock, but that wouldn’t be exhausted by being unplugged for an hour, I don’t think)?

• How I can fix the "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered"?

  I'm using a GeForce GTX 580, with Windows 7 64-bit. The driver version of the GTX is 301.42. The problem happens after a few minutes, when I'm playing specifc games. It won't happen in all games - And I don't have any idea why these games doesn't work. The games that doesn't work: Battlefield 3, Civilization V, Sniper Elite V2. The games that work: Mass Effect 3, Crysis 2, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2, Skyrim, L.A. Noire. As you can see, it's not a problem of "The games that demand more stop working". I've tryed updating the driver of the graphics-card, the bios of the motherboard, even formated my computer (It was needing it) and instaled every driver in the last version possible. This problem happens since I bought my graphics-card, 6 months ago. After a few minutes, from 10 to 20, the pixels in the monitor become strange, with random colors and effects, like it was broken. Then, everything goes black, and the message appears "Display Driver has stopped responding and has recovered". After that, I need to close the game and start again. I am not overclocking, and my temperature never goes higher than 70ºC.

• Question About Example In Robert C Martin's _Clean Code_

  This is a question about the concept of a function doing only one thing. It won't make sense without some relevant passages for context, so I'll quote them here. They appear on pgs 37-38: To say this differently, we want to be able to read the program as though it were a set of TO paragraphs, each of which is describing the current level of abstraction and referencing subsequent TO paragraphs at the next level down. To include the setups and teardowns, we include setups, then we include the test page content, and then we include the teardowns. To include the setups, we include the suite setup if this is a suite, then we include the regular setup. It turns out to be very dif?cult for programmers to learn to follow this rule and write functions that stay at a single level of abstraction. But learning this trick is also very important. It is the key to keeping functions short and making sure they do “one thing.” Making the code read like a top-down set of TO paragraphs is an effective technique for keeping the abstraction level consistent. He then gives the following example of poor code: public Money calculatePay(Employee e) throws InvalidEmployeeType { switch (e.type) { case COMMISSIONED: return calculateCommissionedPay(e); case HOURLY: return calculateHourlyPay(e); case SALARIED: return calculateSalariedPay(e); default: throw new InvalidEmployeeType(e.type); } } and explains the problems with it as follows: There are several problems with this function. First, it’s large, and when new employee types are added, it will grow. Second, it very clearly does more than one thing. Third, it violates the Single Responsibility Principle7 (SRP) because there is more than one reason for it to change. Fourth, it violates the Open Closed Principle8 (OCP) because it must change whenever new types are added. Now my questions. To begin, it's clear to me how it violates the OCP, and it's clear to me that this alone makes it poor design. However, I am trying to understand each principle, and it's not clear to me how SRP applies. Specifically, the only reason I can imagine for this method to change is the addition of new employee types. There is only one "axis of change." If details of the calculation needed to change, this would only affect the submethods like "calculateHourlyPay()" Also, while in one sense it is obviously doing 3 things, those three things are all at the same level of abstraction, and can all be put into a TO paragraph no different from the example one: TO calculate pay for an employee, we calculate commissioned pay if the employee is commissioned, hourly pay if he is hourly, etc. So aside from its violation of the OCP, this code seems to conform to Martin's other requirements of clean code, even though he's arguing it does not.
