• Extracting glyph-path information from ttf files

  I'm trying to figure out a way to extract the information encoded in ttf files. namely: The char-to-glyph table and the individual glyph path data. Does anyone have a good reference explaining the ttf file structure, or some other solution? Keep in mind that I'm not interested in any libraries that can do it for me either (unless they are open source and I can see how they are doing it). The "master" goal is to implement it in Javascript. Thanks!

• Redirecting stdin through a FIFO

  I'm running a server app (written in Java) under GNU/Linux which takes input (from stdin, I guess) and interprets it to run some commands. I dont want to run the app inside a terminal window (I'd like to run a daemon), but I'd still like to be able to input commands whenever I want to. I thought I might be able to do that using fifos, so I created it using mknod. The problem is cat fifofile java... and cat fifofile | java ... fail with a "file not found" error for some reason. Using only cat to read and write and the fifo works flawlessly. Is there any way to fix this, or any other way to achieve the same goal?

• How can I mark a group of changes/changesets in SVN, Hg, or Git

  I would like to mark an arbitrary group of commits/changesets with a label. Commit 1 *Mark 1 Commit 2 *Mark 2 Commit 3 Commit 4 *Mark 1 Commit 5 *Mark 2 The goal is to easily locate all the changes for a specific mark, and to have that grouping persisted in the VCS directly, as opposed to some outside system like a bug tracking system. The location and ordering of the marks needs to be arbitrary, and should be able to work with both committed/uncommitted and pushed/unpushed changes. In SVN the best way I know is to just edit the commit notes and add some sort of special text that you can search for e.g. "**Mark 1". Or just to make a fake edit and commit it and use its commit note to list all the included revisions. Is there a better solution for SVN? Are there equivalent or better solutions for Hg or Git?

• Embed VLC player in GWT

  Hello, I want to embed a VLC player in my webapp build with Google's GWT. First I had a look at this page: http://wiki.videolan.org/GWT, which offers a nice solution but I add to implements all javascript functions calls (play, stop, fullscreen) with JSNI. Then I found gwt-player (hosted by Google code) which does all the job for me but the annoying part is that the project is not widely used (few posts each month on the project's group, not so many talks about it in blogs/forums...) Do you know another option to easly embed & control a VLC player in a GWT app ? My main goal is to play any video/audio file in a webapp and offer the user a fast/forward feature (set rate in VLC), is there any other player I could use ? I already had a look at Quicktime, Windows Media player & Flowplayer, none of them offers as much features as VLC. Thanks in advance & have a nice new year's eve. Chris

• Delete merge history in a branch in TFS

  Suppose I have a main branch and a dev branch. Suppose I merge some stuff from dev into main. I check in the merge Now I decide "whoops, the dev branch wasn't really ready for me to merge into main yet." I want to tell TFS: remove that change set from main and forget that the merge ever happened. Rolling back the changeset is easy enough -- I can use the TFS powertools ROLLBACK command. on the Main branch (with the /changeset /recursive flags) However, I will get a warning from the rollback that the merge history for the files has not been deleted. Effect: Later, when dev is ready to be merged into main, the changes in the files that were rolled back previously are NOT merged into Main (this is because TFS "thinks" that those merges are already done. My goal: When I rollback, make TFS remove the merge history so that when I merge dev into main later on, everything merges. How can I do that? BTW: I'm using TFS 2008 SP1

• Simplest way on iPhone to unzip downloaded file?

  Goal: download a zipped file, unzip it, and save it in the iPhone app's Documents directory. Or else is there a simpler way to unzip a downloaded file than the one used in the Molecules app?

  I have access to a very large code base stored in a subversion repository. I would like to be able to perform Google type searched on the code base. I have done this before when I have access to the server by creating a network share and using Google desktop. I currently do not have access to this subversion server box. Any Ideas? • How to debug applications using COM interfaces?

  I' building an application using C# which will use CATIA COM modules. When I import the COM inside my c# project, I think that Visual C# express generates the Interop automagically for me. All of this works correctly. However, when I try to debug the application and use watches during runtime, every object is a System.__ComObject and I cannot get their "real" value. Is there a way to tell the debugger the types of my COM objects? The goal is to get more familiar with this new API I don't know really well. Sometimes its rather hard to guess the correct types for everything since the interface hierarchy is quite deep

• Simple ASP.Net MVC 1.0 Validation

  On the current project we are working on we haven't upgraded to MVC 2.0 yet so I'm working on implementing some simple validation with the tools available in 1.0. I'm looking for feedback on the way I'm doing this. I have a model that represents a user profile. Inside that model I have a method that will validate all the fields and such. What I want to do is pass a controller to the validation method so that the model can set the model validation property in the controller. The goal is to get the validation from the controller into the model. Here is a quick example public FooController : Controller { public ActionResult Edit(User user) { user.ValidateModel(this); if (ModelState.IsValid) ....... ....... } } And my model validation signature is like public void ValidateModel(Controller currentState) What issues can you see with this? Am I way out to lunch on how I want to do this?

• Can I programatically get hold of the Autos/local variables that is shown when debugging?

  Im trying to build an error-logger that loggs running values that is active in the function that caused the error. (just for fun so its not a critical problem) When going in break-mode and looking at the locals-tab and autos-tab you can see all active variables (name, type and value), it would be useful to get hold of that for logging purposes when an error occur and on some other occasions. For my example, I just want to find all local variables that are of type string and integer and store the name and value of them. Is this possible with reflection? Any tips or pointers that get me closer to my goal would be very appreciated. I have toyed with using expression on a specifik object (a structure) to create an automapper against a dataset, but I have not done anything like what I ask for above, so please make me happy and say its possible.   Say I want to start with a blank JavaScript object: me = {}; And then I have an array: me_arr = new Array(); me_arr['name'] = "Josh K"; me_arr['firstname'] = "Josh"; Now I want to throw that array into the object so I can use me.name to return Josh K. I tried: for(var i in me_arr) { me.i = me_arr[i]; } But this didn't have the desired result. Is this possible? My main goal is to wrap this array in a JavaScript object so I can pass it to a PHP script (via AJAX or whatever) as JSON.

• Using LLBL as Model in MVC

  I have settled on trying to use ASP.NET MVC but the first part I want to replace is the Model. I am using LLBL Pro for the model. I have a table called "Groups" that is a simple look up table. I want to take thhe results of the table and populate a list in MVC. Something that should be very simple... or so I thought.... I've tried all kinds of things as I was getting errors like: The model item passed into the dictionary is of type 'System.Collections.Generic.List1[glossary.EntityClasses.GroupEntity]', but this dictionary requires a model item of type 'System.Collections.Generic.IEnumerable1[glossary.CollectionClasses.GroupCollection]'. private GroupCollection gc = new GroupCollection(); public ActionResult Index() { gc.GetMulti(null); return View( gc.?????? ); } This is all I am trying to do, I've tried lots of variations, but my goal is simply to take the data and display it.

• use of EntityManagerFactory causing duplicate primary key exceptions

  Hey guys, my goal is create an EntityManager using properties dependent on which database is in use. I've seen something like this done in all my Google searches(I made the code more basic for the purpose of this question): @PersistenceUnit private EntityManagerFactory emf; private EntityManager em; private Properties props; @PostConstruct public void createEntityManager(){ //if oracle set oracle properties else set postgres properties emf = Persistence.createEntityManagerFactory("app-x"); em = emf.createEntityManager(props); } This works and I can load Oracle or Postgres properties successfully and I can Select from either database. HOWEVER, I am running into issues when doing INSERT statements. Whenever an INSERT is done I get a duplicate primary key exception.. every time! • How to use Maven2 with Apache Sling?

  Google doesn't help, neither does a stackoverflow.com search, and browsing through Apache Sling documentation doesn't show any solution so here goes: How can I best use Maven2 with Apache Sling? Basically as far as I see the entire application code will need to be placed in the JCR repository, but I need it versioned. There is some documentation about OSGi bundles that could contain resources, but isn't it kind of overkill to create a bundle with a bunch of Java code to talk to Sling when all I want to do is load some files to corresponding URLs? What I was hoping for is something like jetty:run that will automatically deploy a WAR into a new Jetty instance. Ideally the goal for Sling would run Sling and then load the specified content -- is there some Maven2 plugin for this right now? Or is the bundle-based solution the "canonical" way of doing this?

  Hi I'm trying to create a "gadget" like application using WPF. The goal is to get the same behavior as a normal Windows 7 gadget: No task-bar entry Doesn't show up when you alt+tab windows NOT always on top, applications can be on top Visible while performing 'Aero Peek' Visible while using 'Show desktop' / Windows+D I've been able to accomplish the first four goals, but have been unable to find a solution to the fifth problem. The closest I've come is by using the utility class from http://stackoverflow.com/questions/75785/how-do-you-do-appbar-docking-to-screen-edge-like-winamp-in-wpf, but this turns the app into a "toolbar", thereby banishing applications from the part of the screen where my gadget GUI is placed. I can see that similar questions has been asked previously on Stackoverflow, but those have died out before a solution was found. Posting anyway in the hope that there is now someone out there with the knowledge to solve this =)

  this may sound funny, but i spent hours trying to recreate a knob with a realistic rotation using UIView and some trig. I achieved the goal, but now i can not figure out how to know if the knob is rotating left or right. • Jquery UI Slider - Input a Value and Slider Move to Location

  I was wondering if anyone has found a solution or example to actually populating the input box of a slider and having it slide to the appropriate position onBlur() .. Currently, as we all know, it just updates this value with the position you are at. So in some regards, I am trying to reverse the functionality of this amazing slider. One link I found: http://www.webdeveloper.com/forum/archive/index.php/t-177578.html is a bit outdated, but looks like they made an attempt. However, the links to the results do not exist. I am hoping that there may be a solution out there. I know Filament has re-engineered the slider to handle select (drop down) values, and it works flawlessly.. So the goal would be to do the same, but with an input text box. Any help would be incredible! Thanks in Advance!! Robert

My goal is to develop a simple CRUD (1 or 2 pages) but unit tested, for future use, as a code base.   Goal: Make it possible to decorate class methods. When a class method gets decorated, it gets stored in a dictionary so that other class methods can reference it by a string name. Motivation: I want to implement the equivalent of ASP.Net's WebMethods. I am building this on top of google app engine, but that does not affect the point of difficulty that I am having. • libvirt and VirtualBox / Getting Started

  I'm trying to get started on libvirt with VirtualBox as a virtualization solution. I installed everything and VirtualBox itself is running when using their VBoxHeadless command. However, libvirt fails to connect to VirtualBox: # virsh -c vbox:///session libvir: error : could not connect to vbox:///session error: failed to connect to the hypervisor I could not find any hints in the libvirt documentation that point to whether I have to make any domain specific configuration before using virsh. Does anyone have a hint? Or even better, maybe a tutorial that works through the way of using libvirt, virsh or it's APIs (my later goal) from the ground up.

• Saving selected rows in a jqGrid while paging

  I have a jqGrid with which users will select records. A large number of records could be selected across multiple pages. The selected rows seem to get cleared out when the user pages through the data. Is it up to the developer to manually track the selected rows in an array? I'm fine doing this, but I'm not sure what the best way is. I'm not sure I want to be splicing an array whenever any number of records are selected as that seems like it could really slow things down. My end goal is to have a jQueryUI dialog that, when closed, while store all the selected rows so I can post it to the server. Insight, questions, comments; all are appreciated! Note: added aspnetmvc tag only because this is for an MVC app

• Reading multiple Emacs info files simultaneously

  For reading programming (and other) documentation, the Emacs INFO mode is outstanding. So outstanding that I would like to be able to read say, the Emacs Lisp info file and the org-mode info files simultaneously without traversing back up to the beginning of the info tree. Either I've missed something obvious or I will need to hack some Emacs Lisp to achieve the goal. And yet again, someone may have already cracked this nut. So I guess my question is: what is the state of the practice for reading mulitple INFO files in Emacs simultaneously?
