  Hello SO. I'm trying to make an API for my rails application using JSON responses to RESTful resource controllers. This is a new experience for me, so I'm looking for some guidance and pointers. To start things off: In a rails application, what is the "proper" way to respond with JSON to REST-ful controller methods? (create, update, destroy) Is there an idiomatic way to indicate success/failure through a JSON response? Additional information: I'm currently working with rails 3.0.beta2 I would like to avoid using a plugin or gem to do the grunt work, my goal is to gain a better understanding of how to make a rails 3 API. Links to places I could find more information on the topic would also be appreciated, some quick searching on google didn't do me much good.

• How can I install xpdf on a Godaddy Linux shared hosting server?

  I'm having trouble determining if it's possible, based on the amount of access I have to my Godaddy server, to install XPDF. Could someone shed some light on this? Here's the link to XPDF. And here is info about the GoDaddy server. My goal is to convert PDF's to Plain Text automatically using a PHP script on the server. So far, other solutions like code posted in the comments of the PHP website have been insufficient. All research seems to point to XPDF.

• How to Implement Loose Coupling with a SOA Architecture

  I've been doing a lot of research lately about SOA and ESB's etc. I'm working on redesigning some legacy systems at work now and would like to build it with more of a SOA architecture than it currently has. We use these services in about 5 of our websites and one of the biggest problems we have right now with our legacy system is that almost all the time when we make bug fixes or updates we need to re-deploy our 5 websites which can be a quite time consuming process. My goal is to make the interfaces between services loosely coupled so that changes can be made without having to re-deploy all the dependent services and websites. I need the ability to extend an already existing service interface without breaking or updating any of its dependencies. Have any of you encountered this problem before? How did you solve it?

• LocalReport (WebForms) and Partial Trust, for PDF Generation

  My goal is to generate a PDF for display in a web page, either as aspx or with a generic handler. (This will link from a Silverlight page, but this is irrelevant to the problem.) The problem is that LocalReport (Microsoft.Reporting.WebForms; Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms.dll) requires full trust, and our hosting server does not allow full trust. I am aware that ReportViewer has a remote mode that will allow it to run with partial trust, but for that I need a report server url which should probably have full trust as well, which does not solve anything. So how do I generate PDFs from WebForms in a partially trusted environment?

• Parsing HTML with Python 2.7 - HTMLParser, SGMLParser, or Beautiful Soup?

  I want to do some screen-scraping with Python 2.7, and I have no context for the differences between HTMLParser, SGMLParser, or Beautiful Soup. Are these all trying to solve the same problem, or do they exist for different reasons? Which is simplest, which is most robust, and which (if any) is the default choice? Also, please let me know if I have overlooked a significant option. Edit: I should mention that I'm not particularly experienced in HTML parsing, and I'm particularly interested in which will get me moving the quickest, with the goal of parsing HTML on one particular site.

• How do i break a number down into a percentage (0 - 100%)? Details inside...

  I am using a JS progress bar that is set using a percentage: 0 to 100 (percent). I need the progress bar to reach 100% when 160,000 people have signed a certain form. I have the total number of signers set in a PHP variable but am lost on how to do the math to convert that into a percentage that fits within 1 - 100 (so that the progress bar actually reflects the goal of 160,000). I may be missing something obvious here (i suck at anything number-related) so does anyone here have a clue as to how to do this?

  I am calling a RESTful web service in the back-end of some ASP.NET pages. I am using ASP.NET asynchronous pages, so under the hood I am using the methods: HttpWebRequest BeginGetResponse() and HttpWebRequest EndGetResponse() The response string in my case is always a JSON string. I use the following code to read the entire string: using (StreamReader sr = new StreamReader(myHttpWebResponse.GetResponseStream())) { myObject.JSONData = sr.ReadToEnd(); } Is this method OK in terms of scalability? I have seen other code samples that instead retrieve the response data in blocks using Read(). My primary goal is scalability, so this back-end call can be made across many concurrent page hits. • How to write custom reports in Drupal

  What's the "right" way in Drupal to create reports? I was hoping to use a view but am not having much luck. My goal is to create a table of rows containing three fields: user name, location, SUM of volunteer hours. Once I have this part working, I plan to expose filters for Location and Date. Views Calc only allows you to group by one field. I know Crystal Reports and MSSQL Reporting Services and I was hoping to find a similar kind of thing for Drupal. Is there a framework, examples, or a module to help with this, or do I need to write a custom module implementing the views_alter_SQL hook to get the desired data for each report? • Svn log - svn: '.' is not a working copy

  I'm getting "svn: '.' is not a working copy" when i use the svn log command. I know that i need a working copy for the log command to work but can this be done directly on a repository? My goal is to display the information (change history) of a repository. I think updating the working copy whenever i need the log information is not a good solution. Is there an alternative solution to this or updating a working copy every time i need to log is the only way to go? Thanks in advance.

  I've read several articles that tell you how to add text to the output window in visual studio from within an Add-On (specifically, a visual studio 2008 integration package, via the visual studio 2008 SDK 1.1), but no examples of how to read text from the output window. My goal is to parse text from the debug output window while debugging a certain application (TRACE output and possibly stdin/stdout). The IVsOutputWindowPane interface has no methods for reading in text from the output window.   Hello, Is it possible to make a jquery ajax call, and get the response as an input parameter of another function: here is an example, i have the following function call at a location: updateTips(validationTextObject,objUsers.fetchAvailable()); the objUsers.fetchAvailable() function makes a ajax call to the server. The callback function on successful call would be something like this. It is being used to process the result BHUsers.prototype.recvAvailable= function(response){ // some kind of processing over here return (response["status"] == "OK")? "Available" : "Not Available"; } I want that fuction to return the processed result which can be used as a parameter to the function updateTips The primary goal of this is to be able to do all of this for multiple scenarios, rather than writing multiple functions for the same call. • Facebook API friends_get is extremely slow

  I have a PHP application running in iFrame mode. I am rendering an <fb:multi-friend-selector condensed="true"> inside of <fb:serverfbml> tags. This is inside a PHP file that calls a function that gets a list of user IDs using $facebook->api_client->friends_get();. The multi-friend selector renders just fine, but, when I leave the friend_get() call uncommented, the page takes between 15-20 seconds to load (confirmed with Firebug)! The goal is to limit the number of users displayed in the selector by building a list of user ids not to display, for use in the friend selector's exclude_ids parameter. And since it's "exclude_ids" and not "include_ids", I can't think of a way of getting around this api call. It seems to me there must be something I can do to make the api call faster, because I've seen friend selectors that load much more quickly.

  I am dealing with image buffers, and I want to be able to access data a few lines into my image for analysis with a c library. I have created my 8-bit pixel buffer in Python using create_string_buffer. Is there a way to get a pointer to a location within that buffer without re-creating a new buffer? My goal is to analyze and change data within that buffer in chunks, without having to do a lot of buffer creation and data copying. In this case, ultimately, the C library is doing all the manipulation of the buffer, so I don't actually have to change values within the buffer using Python. I just need to give my C function access to data within the buffer.

  Given a directed graph, the goal is to combine the node with the nodes it is pointing to and come up with minimum number of these [lets give the name] super nodes. The catch is once you combine the nodes you can't use those nodes again. [first node as well as all the combined nodes - that is all the members of one super node] The greedy approach would be to pick the node with maximum out degree and combine that node with nodes it is pointing to and remove all of them. Do this every time with the nodes which are not removed yet from graph. The greedy is O(V), but this won't necessarily output minimum number super nodes. So what is the best algorithm to do this?

  Is there a standard site structure format? The use of this would be for export and import into a CMS or framework to define the urls, content, metadata for a website.   I have a table where we record per user values like money_spent, money_spent_on_candy and the date. So the columns in this table (let's call it MoneyTable) would be: UserId Money_Spent Money_Spent_On_Candy Date My goal is to SUM the total amount of money_spent -- but only for those users where they have spent more than 10% of their total money spent for the date range on candy. What would that query be? I know how to select the Users that have this -- and then I can output the data and sum that by hand but I would like to do this in one single query. Here would be the query to pull the sum of Spend per user for only the users that have spent 10% of their money on candy. SELECT UserId, SUM(Money_Spent), SUM(Money_Spent_On_Candy) / SUM(Money_Spent) AS PercentCandySpend FROM MoneyTable WHERE DATE >= '2010-01-01' HAVING PercentCandySpend > 0.1;

• Objective-C I can access self.view but not self.view.frame

• Is there an extensible SQL like query language that is safe for exposing via a public API?

  I want to expose some spatial (and a few non-spatial) datasets via a public API. The backend store will either be PostgreSQL/PostGIS, sqlite/spatialite, or CouchDB/GeoCouch. My goal is to find a some, preferably standard, way to allow people to make complex spatial queries against the data. I would like it to be a simple GET based request. The idea is to allow safe SQL type queries, without allowing unsafe ones. I would rather modify something that is off the shelf than doing the entire thing myself. I specifically want to support requesting specific fields from a table; joining results; and spatial functions that are already implemented by the underlying datastore. Ideas anyone?
