That it is a long time associate and friend of the team we have all grown to know and love, I feel much better about the move. Who cares, Chris, you haven't blogged religiously in ages! • Why is 2^16 a "special" number?

  OK, I feel stupid asking this - but in Jeff's article: Getting the Interview Phone Screen Right and originally stated in the 5 essential phone screen questions: They shouldn't stare blankly at you when you ask with 2^16 is. It's a special number. They should know it. I've been a developer\software engineer\code monkey\whatever for a little while now, and I don't think I've ever come across this. I mean, I can certainly count binary values do basic operations on them, etc, etc. But I don't see what is "special" about this value.

• Is there much difference between X86 Assembly language on Windows and Linux?

  I'm a complete beginner at Assembly, and my aim is to learn as much as I can to do with Assembly to one day I can reach expert level (I know I'm way off right now, but you never know). My only problem is this: I've got two books which both teach assembly, one on a Linux and the other on Windows. They are Jeff Duntemann's Assembly Language Step By Step (the linux one) and Introduction to 80x86 Assembly Language and Computer Architecture (the windows version). If I want to get the best out of assembly, should I do this on linux and windows? Also, is the syntax the same on Windows and Linux or will I have teach my self again when learning on the other OS( which is my main concern, I want to be able to use assembly on windows and linux).

  This following question by Jeff was in 2010 and I wanted to check how things have changed in the past 2 years. My problem: I run a site with most of the content distributed to subdomains that’s are user based. E.g: Joe.example.com John.example.com Jil.example.com So all of these subdomains have the content and the main site example.com becomes a mere dummy listing all the subdomains. Now the question is, as of 2012, how is google treating domain authority and page rank in this case? I understand the notion of page rank as page per se but when it comes to domain authority will the parent domain have the cumulative effect of the domain authority or will it be spread out?

I need to create a web app where people will sign up, call it main-app.com, when they sign up my code will generate a usersite.my-app.com, they will login and only be able to manage their mini site. My question is, is it correct to model this out by creating a table for site, a table for user, users belong to site and site has many users. Then I should create a content table that belongs to user AND site? is that right? Thanks Jeff

• How to Enable SideLoading in a SharePoint Site

  I was trying to deploy a SharePoint App for the first time and ran into an error about SideLoading not being enabled on the site. The solution is fairly simple – you just have enable the Developer feature on the site.  Unfortunately, it’s a hidden feature so you have to do it through PowerShell.  While searching the internet for the command to enable the feature I kept running into really long scripts that seemed overly complicated.  Fortunately, Jeff (a friend at work) sent me this snippet that is very concise and does the job: Enable-SPFeature e374875e-06b6-11e0-b0fa-57f5dfd72085 –url http://yoursharepointbox/site/ Obviously, you will need to update the URL to match your environment!

  I need to translate the a carbon method into cocoa into and I am having trouble finding any documentation about what the carbon method getPtrSize really does. From the code I am translating it seems that it returns the byte representation of an image but that doesn't really match up with the name. Could someone give me a good explanation of this method or link me to some documentation that describes it. • ScriptingBridge causes iTunes to relaunch after quit

  I'm working on a Cocoa app that monitors what you're listening to in iTunes, and since I'm targeting Mac OS 10.5 and higher, I've decided to use Scripting Bridge. If I try to close iTunes too close to the time that my app polls it for the current track, iTunes will immediately relaunch! The only way to reliably prevent this behavior is to quit my app first, then quit iTunes. Switching to EyeTunes solves the problem, but it's a fairly old codebase and I was hoping that I could accomplish this without an external library. Surely I'm doing something wrong that's causing the relaunch? • Handling Incoming Mail to Multiple Recipients in PHP

  Alright, this may take a moment or two to explain: I'm working on creating an Email<SMS Bridge (like Teleflip). I have a few set parameters to work in: Dreamhost Webhosting PHP 5 (without PEAR) Postfix What I have right now, is a catch-all email address that forwards the email sent to a shell account. The shell account in turn forwards it to my PHP script. The PHP script reads it, strips a few Email Headers in an effort to make sure it sends properly, then forwards it to the number specified as the recipient. 5551234567@sms.bridge.gvoms.com of course sends an SMS to +1 (555) 123-4567. This works really well, as I am parsing the To field and grabbing just the email address it is sending to. However, what I realized that I did not account for is multiple recipients. For example, an email sent to both 5551234567 and 1235554567 (using the To line, the CC line, or any combination of those). The way email works of course, is I get two emails received, end up parsing each of them separately, and 5551234567 ends up getting the same message twice. What is the best way to handle this situation, so that each number specified in TO and CC can get one copy of the message. In addition, though I doubt its possible: Is there a way to handle BCC the same way?

I understand that profile tabs don't support referencing external javascript but even my inline tags are not showing up on profile pages. • Transitioning from FlexBuilder 3 to FlashBuilder 4 ... there and back again.

  It's growing pains time again. Some of our stuff requires FlashBuilder 4 and some still requires FlexBuilder 3. Both are installed OK, and no projects use both IDEs. The trouble is, when I go back to work on a FlexBuilder 3 project it takes freakin' forever to build and I get weird errors like these: This doesn't seem to cause any identifiable problems except to throw up a modal dialog at various points in the build process, forcing user interaction. But I do notice that memory fills up fast in FB3 and generally FB3 starts behaving strangely and ultimately quits once it gets up over 700MB. This is only a temporary bridge situation until we get all projects into FB4, but "temporary" could mean weeks if not months. Does anyone have any advice for how to get through this bridge period? Is there anything I can do to make these two IDEs work and play well together? Failing that, does anyone know what "java.lang.String" is the "reason" for the problem? Does Eclipse have a resource bundle somewhere that is getting corrupted when i go back and forth between the two?
