  • Unable to fix broken packages with sudo apt-get install -f

    - by Bob
Here's my result, of sudo apt-get install -f. i have Ran it twice and got negative result. I believe there is an error at "error in Version string '0:3.6.1-dates for language English Translation data updates for all supported packages for: English" This same statement "error in Version string, caused me three days of attempting to download version 12.04. There is a bug report concerning the quoted text as well. Is there anyway to download the version without the language packs, why would I corrupt version 11.10? Also, when attempting to download Synaptic using sudo apt-get install synaptic, I get the same error message. Again I point out the initial download problems and the same error message receipt. • API Design Techniques

    - by Dehumanizer
Is it right or more beautiful to name the functions with an prefix, like in Qt? Or using "many" namespaces, but 'normal' names for functions? For example, slOpenFile(); //"sl" means "some lib" vs some_lib::file_functions::openFile(); UPD: I've read somewhere that the first variant(using some prefix) is better, because the API users can perform 'fast' search among the documentation and in the Internet. E.g. by typing the magic prefix search engine starts to advice the exact functions. Is it enough to use the first variant?

  • Best choise of gui platform/framework for 3d development [closed]

    - by Miguel P
The title pretty much says it all, so I'm developing a 3d engine for Directx 11, and it's going good so far. I started using .net forms as a GUI, but then(Of curiosity), i jumped to MFC, and the app looked great, but in my perspective, MFC is badly written, and it's too complicated, meaning that some things just took forever, while it would have taken a few seconds in .net forms. But my real question is: If i want to make an Editor for a 3d scene, where directx renders in the form( This was accomplished in .net forms), what would be the best choise of gui platform/framework? MFC,.net forms, Qt, etc....

  • Setting APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH for gnome applications does not work on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

    - by Jack'
To start the application with the menu enabled in the application and the panel, the following command has to be used: APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH=1 appname I recently discovered that this only works for non-gnome applications on Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, i.e. if you replace appname with applications such as gnome-terminal, gedit, evince, empathy, evolution, rhythmbox, nautilus, etc. only global menus will be displayed. However, if you start, for example, gimp or inkscape by using APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH, both global and local menus will be shown. The questions is: why is APPMENU_DISPLAY_BOTH not taken into account when starting such gnome applications? P.S. I know how to disable global menus in order to get the local ones (UBUNTU_MENUPROXY trick, removing appmenu-gtk/qt packages, removing the indicator-appmenu, etc.) Thanks for the help!

  • Better Embedded 2012

    - by Valter Minute
Arrivederci a Firenze!

  • Is it important to obfuscate C++ application code?

    - by user827992
In the Java world, it seems to sometimes be a problem, but, what about C++? Are there different solutions? I was thinking about the fact that someone can replace the C++ library of a specific OS with a different version of the same library, but full of debug symbols to understand what my code does. IS tt a good thing to use standard or popular libraries? This can also happen with some dll library under Windows replaced with the "debug version" of that library. Is it better to prefer static compilation? In commercial applications, I see that for the core of their app they compile everything statically and for the most part the dlls (dynamic libraries in general) are used to offer some third party technologies like anti-piracy solutions (I see this in many games), GUI library (like Qt), OS libraries, etc. Is static compilation the equivalent to obfuscation in the Java world? In better terms, is it the best and most affordable solution to protect your code?

  • Strategies for porting application from Win32 API to GTK+

    - by Vitor Braga
I have a legacy application written in C, using the raw Win32 API. The general level of abstraction is low and raw dependency on <windows.h> is common. I would like to port this application to GTK+. There are any kind of guidelines or best practices on how to do this? I've previously ported a MFC application to Qt, but the application was very abstracted - it draw it's own set of widgets, for example - and initial porting was very straightforward. I've been thinking at first using Wine to build a native Linux executable and then trying to slowly refactor it into a GTK+ app. Does some one have best practices or previous experiences to share about this?

  • Switching domains in one's career?

    - by rocknroll
I have been a C++,Qt programmer for the last 3.5 years and have hit a plateau in terms of doing something new. Work has been repetitive and routine. I personally believe it is time to move on but off late I am getting more offers in mobile development like Android,Iphone etc. The latest offer I have is for objective-C based profile. I do not have the slightest idea about objective-C apart from that it is Object oriented C resembling C++ but not exactly a clone. Questions in my mind are --what are the pros/cons of this careers switch or for any such switch? --Is it good for one's career to change domains after sometime? --How difficult it is to get back to one's previous area of proficiency? Thanks

  • What is important when starting GUI programming, and pick from widget libraries [closed]

    - by jokester
I have been a CLI programmer, and recently I found it will be a plus to learn GUI programming. In past, my experience and knowlegde was a bit messy. So you may imagine many detour were there in my way, that is true. And I want to avoid getting lost again if possible. When googling about existing GUI framework, I found it is hard to choose my start point from GTK, QT, and lot of less famous peers. What are important factors when you guys are facing that problem? Will it be a good idea to pick a small enough library and feel its fundamental ideas?

  • Preparing to release code as open-source

    - by Raphael
I have developed a fully functional tool which I would like not only to share with anyone interested but also get support from the community. This tool is cross-platform, written in C++ with Qt, the code is well commented but I still lack any documentation. There are also some small issues and improvements to be made before I can call it a stable, final version. What are the first steps that I have to take to release code as open-source and attracting people interested in contributing? This is my first serious attempt to release open-source code and I really don't know where to start. Should I just push it to Github put together a small wiki and pray for the best?

  • reading parameters and files on browser, looking how to execute on server

    - by jbcolmenares
I have a site done in Rails, which uses javascript to load files and generate forms for the user to input certain information. Those files and parameters are then to be used in a fortran code on the server. When the UI was on the server (using Qt), I would create a parameters file and execute the fortran code using threads so I wouldn't block the computer. Now that is web-based, I need to make the server and browser talk. What's the procedure for that? where should I start looking? I'm already using rails + javascript. I need that extra tool to do the talking, and no idea where to start.

  • How do I remove the Skype icon from the system panel?

    - by superjudge3
I have been trying for some time to remove the Skype icon in the upper panel in Ubuntu 11.10, but to no avail. I have went into dconf, went to desktop - unity - panel, and I looked to delete 'Skype' from the whitelist. But Skype isn't in the whitelist! And it's showing up on the panel! Something smells fishy here, and I was wondering if anyone had an answer as to a) how I can actually remove the Skype icon from the gnome panel and b) why an icon still show up there if it isn't in the whitelist? Also, if it's relevant, I use Unity. EDIT: So, the only solution for this issue is the scorched earth strategy of removing sni-qt?

  • unmet dependencies in Ubuntu 12.04

I tried today to install a dvb-card on my Ubuntu 12.04 (Linux blauhai-linux 3.2.0-25-generic #40-Ubuntu SMP Wed May 23 20:30:51 UTC 2012 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux ). The installation failed with an error. After that, i tried to install python (it was already installed but i got this error): linux:~$ sudo apt-get install git Reading package lists... • Introduction to Human Workflow 11g

    - by agiovannetti
Human Workflow is a component of SOA Suite just like BPEL, Mediator, Business Rules, etc. The Human Workflow component allows you to incorporate human intervention in a business process. You can use Human Workflow to create a business process that requires a manager to approve purchase orders greater than $10,000; or a business process that handles article reviews in which a group of reviewers need to vote/approve an article before it gets published. Human Workflow can handle the task assignment and routing as well as the generation of notifications to the participants. There are three common patterns or usages of Human Workflow: 1) Approval Scenarios: manage documents and other transactional data through approval chains . For example: approve expense report, vacation approval, hiring approval, etc. 2) Reviews by multiple users or groups: group collaboration and review of documents or proposals. For example, processing a sales quote which is subject to review by multiple people. 3) Case Management: workflows around work management or case management. For example, processing a service request. This could be routed to various people who all need to modify the task. It may also incorporate ad hoc routing which is unknown at design time. SOA 11g Human Workflow includes the following features: Assignment and routing of tasks to the correct users or groups. Deadlines, escalations, notifications, and other features required for ensuring the timely performance of a task. Presentation of tasks to end users through a variety of mechanisms, including a Worklist application. Organization, filtering, prioritization and other features required for end users to productively perform their tasks. Reports, reassignments, load balancing and other features required by supervisors and business owners to manage the performance of tasks. Human Workflow Architecture The Human Workflow component is divided into 3 modules: the service interface, the task definition and the client interface module. The Service Interface handles the interaction with BPEL and other components. The Client Interface handles the presentation of task data through clients like the Worklist application, portals and notification channels. The task definition module is in charge of managing the lifecycle of a task. Who should get the task assigned? What should happen next with the task? When must the task be completed? Should the task be escalated?, etc Stages and Participants When you create a Human Task you need to specify how the task is assigned and routed. The first step is to define the stages and participants. A stage is just a logical group. A participant can be a user, a group of users or an application role. The participants indicate the type of assignment and routing that will be performed. Stages can be sequential or in parallel. You can combine them to create any usage you require. See diagram below: Assignment and Routing There are different ways a task can be assigned and routed: Single Approver: task is assigned to a single user, group or role. For example, a vacation request is assigned to a manager. If the manager approves or rejects the request, the employee is notified with the decision. If the task is assigned to a group then once one of managers acts on it, the task is completed. Parallel : task is assigned to a set of people that must work in parallel. This is commonly used for voting. For example, a task gets approved once 50% of the participants approve it. You can also set it up to be a unanimous vote. Serial : participants must work in sequence. The most common scenario for this is management chain escalation. FYI (For Your Information) : task is assigned to participants who can view it, add comments and attachments, but can not modify or complete the task. Task Actions The following is the list of actions that can be performed on a task: Claim : if a task is assigned to a group or multiple users, then the task must be claimed first to be able to act on it. Escalate : if the participant is not able to complete a task, he/she can escalate it. The task is reassigned to his/her manager (up one level in a hierarchy). Pushback : the task is sent back to the previous assignee. Reassign :if the participant is a manager, he/she can delegate a task to his/her reports. Release : if a task is assigned to a group or multiple users, it can be released if the user who claimed the task cannot complete the task. Any of the other assignees can claim and complete the task. Request Information and Submit Information : use when the participant needs to supply more information or to request more information from the task creator or any of the previous assignees. Suspend and Resume :if a task is not relevant, it can be suspended. A suspension is indefinite. It does not expire until Resume is used to resume working on the task. Withdraw : if the creator of a task does not want to continue with it, for example, he wants to cancel a vacation request, he can withdraw the task. The business process determines what happens next. Renew : if a task is about to expire, the participant can renew it. The task expiration date is extended one week. Notifications Human Workflow provides a mechanism for sending notifications to participants to alert them of changes on a task. Notifications can be sent via email, telephone voice message, instant messaging (IM) or short message service (SMS). Notifications can be sent when the task status changes to any of the following: Assigned/renewed/delegated/reassigned/escalated Completed Error Expired Request Info Resume Suspended Added/Updated comments and/or attachments Updated Outcome Withdraw Other Actions (e.g. acquiring a task) Here is an example of an email notification: Worklist Application Oracle BPM Worklist application is the default user interface included in SOA Suite. It allows users to access and act on tasks that have been assigned to them. For example, from the Worklist application, a loan agent can review loan applications or a manager can approve employee vacation requests. Through the Worklist Application users can: Perform authorized actions on tasks, acquire and check out shared tasks, define personal to-do tasks and define subtasks. Filter tasks view based on various criteria. Work with standard work queues, such as high priority tasks, tasks due soon and so on. Work queues allow users to create a custom view to group a subset of tasks in the worklist, for example, high priority tasks, tasks due in 24 hours, expense approval tasks and more. Define custom work queues. Gain proxy access to part of another user's tasks. Define custom vacation rules and delegation rules. Enable group owners to define task dispatching rules for shared tasks. Collect a complete workflow history and audit trail. Use digital signatures for tasks. Run reports like Unattended tasks, Tasks productivity, etc. Here is a screenshoot of what the Worklist Application looks like. On the right hand side you can see the tasks that have been assigned to the user and the task's detail. • QWebView problem rendering embedded fonts

    - by user313724
Hi, I'm trying to render a web page, in QT 4.5, that uses an embedded font. Most of the time this works as expected. Unfortunately, sometimes I get really weird behaviour. The font is rendered - apparently - off-by-one. For instance the text: "By" woukd appear as "Cz" Has anyone run into this before? And - more importantly - knows how to fix this?

  • how to merge stripped symbols with binary?

    - by Bernd Schmickler
I compiled the Qt Framework with debugging enabled, but the script stripped the debugging symbols from the libraries and saved them as *.debug files -- just like here. Sadly I need these symbols inside the .so files, so I can continue working with them. There seems no way to teach my debugger to load external (non-PDB) symbols. So another way of solving my problem might be converting the .debug files to PDB format, which might also be a problem. Thank you very much!

  • Qt4: QPrinter / QPainter only prints the first document

    - by hurikhan77
The problem is that my application only prints the first document fine. The second document is empty, only the page number is printed, the rest of the page is empty. In Qt4, I'm initializing the printer in the main.cpp in the following way: mw->printer = new QPrinter(QPrinter::HighResolution); mw->printer->setPaperSize(QPrinter::A5); mw->printer->setNumCopies(2); mw->printer->setColorMode(QPrinter::GrayScale); QPrintDialog *dialog = new QPrintDialog(mw->printer, mw); dialog->setWindowTitle(QObject::tr("Printer Setup")); if (dialog->exec() == QDialog::Accepted) { mw->printer->setFullPage(TRUE); return a.exec (); } This works fine for printing the first document from the application: qDebug("Printing"); QPainter p; if (!p.begin(printer)) { qDebug("Printing aborted"); return; } Q3PaintDeviceMetrics metrics(p.device()); int dpiy = metrics.logicalDpiY(); int dpix = metrics.logicalDpiX(); int tmargin = (int) ((marginTop / 2.54) * dpiy); int bmargin = (int) ((marginBottom / 2.54) * dpiy); int lmargin = (int) ((marginLeft / 2.54) * dpix); int rmargin = (int) ((marginRight / 2.54) * dpix); QRect body(lmargin, tmargin, metrics.width() - (lmargin + rmargin), metrics.height() - (tmargin + bmargin)); QString document; /* ... app logic to write a richtext document */ Q3SimpleRichText richText(QString("<qt>%1</qt>").arg(document), QFont("Arial", fontSize)); richText.setWidth(&p, body.width()); QRect view(body); int page = 1; do { // draw text richText.draw(&p, body.left(), body.top(), view, colorGroup()); view.moveBy(0, body.height()); p.translate(0, -body.height()); // insert page number p.drawText(view.right() - p.fontMetrics().width(QString::number(page)), view.bottom() + p.fontMetrics().ascent() + 5, QString::number(page)); // exit loop on last page if (view.top () >= richText.height ()) break; printer->newPage(); page++; } while (TRUE); if (!p.end()) qDebug("Print painter yielded failure"); But when this routine runs the second time, it does not print the document. It will just print an empty page but still with the page number on it. This worked fine before with Qt3.

  • PyQt threads and signals - how to properly retrieve values

    - by Cawas
Using Python 2.5 and PyQt, I couldn't find any question this specific in Python, so sorry if I'm repeating the other Qt referenced questions below, but I couldn't easily understand that C code. I've got two classes, a GUI and a thread, and I'm trying to get return values from the thread. I've used the link in here as base to write my code, which is working just fine. To sum it up and illustrate the question in code here (I don't think this code will run on itself): class MainWindow (QtGui.QWidget): # this is just a reference and not really relevant to the question def __init__ (self, parent = None): QtGui.QWidget.__init__(self, parent) self.thread = Worker() # this does not begin a thread - look at "Worker.run" for mor details self.connect(self.thread, QtCore.SIGNAL('finished()'), self.unfreezeUi) self.connect(self.thread, QtCore.SIGNAL('terminated()'), self.unfreezeUi) self.connect(self.buttonDaemon, QtCore.SIGNAL('clicked()'), self.pressDaemon) # the problem begins below: I'm not using signals, or queue, or whatever, while I believe I should def pressDaemon (self): self.buttonDaemon.setEnabled(False) if self.thread.isDaemonRunning(): self.thread.setDaemonStopSignal(True) self.buttonDaemon.setText('Daemon - converts every %s sec'% args['daemonInterval']) else: self.buttonConvert.setEnabled(False) self.thread.startDaemon() self.buttonDaemon.setText('Stop Daemon') self.buttonDaemon.setEnabled(True) # this whole class is just another reference class Worker (QtCore.QThread): daemonIsRunning = False daemonStopSignal = False daemonCurrentDelay = 0 def isDaemonRunning (self): return self.daemonIsRunning def setDaemonStopSignal (self, bool): self.daemonStopSignal = bool def __init__ (self, parent = None): QtCore.QThread.__init__(self, parent) self.exiting = False self.thread_to_run = None # which def will be running def __del__ (self): self.exiting = True self.thread_to_run = None self.wait() def run (self): if self.thread_to_run != None: self.thread_to_run(mode='continue') def startDaemon (self, mode = 'run'): if mode == 'run': self.thread_to_run = self.startDaemon # I'd love to be able to just pass this as an argument on start() below return self.start() # this will begin the thread # this is where the thread actually begins self.daemonIsRunning = True self.daemonStopSignal = False sleepStep = 0.1 # don't know how to interrupt while sleeping - so the less sleepStep, the faster StopSignal will work # begins the daemon in an "infinite" loop while self.daemonStopSignal == False and not self.exiting: # here, do any kind of daemon service delay = 0 while self.daemonStopSignal == False and not self.exiting and delay < args['daemonInterval']: time.sleep(sleepStep) # delay is actually set by while, but this holds for N second delay += sleepStep # daemon stopped, reseting everything self.daemonIsRunning = False self.emit(QtCore.SIGNAL('terminated')) Tho it's quite big, I hope this is pretty clear. The main point is on def pressDaemon. Specifically all 3 self.thread calls. The last one, self.thread.startDaemon() is just fine, and exactly as the example. I doubt that represents any issue. The problem is being able to set the Daemon Stop Signal and retrieve the value if it's running. I'm not sure that it's possible to set a stop signal on QtCore.QtThread, because I've tried doing the same way and it didn't work. But I'm pretty sure it's not possible to retrieve a return result from the emit. So, there it is. I'm using direct calls to the thread class, and I'm almost positive that's not a good design and will probably fail when running under stress. I read about that queue, but I'm not sure it's the proper solution here, or if I should be using Qt at all, since this is Python. And just maybe there's nothing wrong with the way I'm doing.
