• What do I need to write a small game on Linux?

  I want to make a simple game: 2d, single-player, without tons of animations and special effects. I am not interested in ready to use game engines, I want to learn to write some code in a quite universal language. I am using Linux (AMD64) and looking for something easy with nice library for games. I do not want to mix few languages, most of them are in fact fast enough themselves for my needs. Cross platform would be an advantage, however all I need is a good Linux support. I have been considering few solutions. Ruby + Language looks very nice. + I am going to learn Ruby. - I am afraid I can have problems with additional libraries. - This thread about game libraries for Ruby could be longer. SDL + C + It is used for games. + It is very easy to set up. + There is a lot of additional libraries. + It is cross-platform. - The solution is quite low level. - The language is sometimes quite hard to read. QT + C++ + It is very easy to set up. + The standard QT libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. + The documentation is good. - The compilation is slow. - The language looks horrible. - The size of standard QT libraries is too big to comprehend. Environment of web browser + I am going to learn something more about this environment. + It is somewhat used for games. + It is quite cross-platform. - It would be too much experimental. Java + It is used for games. + The standard Java libraries supports everything I can possibly need. + It is cross-platform. - It is quite hard to set up. - The size of standard Java libraries is too big to comprehend. - The source code in Java could look better. - I think I do not want to learn Java. Google Go + I am going to learn Google Go. - There is big problem with libraries. - The solution would be quite low level. Python + It looks some people do games in Python, according to this thread. + It looks there are probably more libraries than for Ruby. - The Ruby language looks better. - I think I do not want to learn Python. C++ + something else + It is used for games. + It would be probably cross-platform. + There is a lot of libraries. - I do not need C++ extensions over C. - Compilation could be slow, there are fast compilers for C, not for C++. Haskell + I am going to learn Haskell. - Many things about programming computer games looks too much imperative. - It looks I can have some problems with libraries. - Compilation (GHC) looks slow. There is probably something more to consider. Does anyone have experience in making small games for Linux in non mainstream solutions? Does anyone have an advice for me?

• Two functions working but not when I put them together

  I'm really new to C(I have been learning Cuda and wanted to learn C so I can run everything together instead of generating data in Java/Python and copy/pasting it manually to my Cuda program to play with). I am trying to open a large file(20+gb) and parse some data but because I was having problems I decided to try to break down my problem first to verify I can open and read line by line a file and then in another file take a sample of the output of a line and try to parse it, then if all goes well I can simply bring them together. I managed(after a bit of a struggle) to get each part working but when I combine them together it doesn't work(I tried in both eclipse & QT creator. QT creator says it exited unexpectedly and eclipse just stops..). But when I copy/paste it into my main program then it doesn't work(QT shows nothing and eclipse just shows the first line). The only thing I can think of is maybe I'm doing something wrong the way I parse the list variable so its not accessible later on(I'm not sure its a wild guess). Is there anything I'm missing?

• Print Microsoft Project chart as giant PDF

  Hi, I have Adobe's PDF creator installed and I'm using Microsoft Project 2007... I want to print my gantt chart as one giant single-page PDF. (Currently it's set to print on letter sized paper, and it's six pages in a 3x2 layout.) I can't figure out where or how to make those settings. The PDF page setup doesn't seem to be right, nor "page setup" in Project. Help :-)

• Trying to use the 7-zip self extracting archive GUI and it fails [closed]

  Trying to use the 7-zip self extracting archive GUI and it fails. When I try to create a "Self Extracting Installer" option, at the end of the install it runs my batch file and it appears to be extracting all the files just before it does that, but after extraction, the files are nowhere to be found (except within the .7z archive). • How to delete a file with a space at end of the name and hidden attributes?

  We have a hidden file with a space at the end of the file name. Usually, I take ownership of the file, then use a command line rename with the 8.3 (dir/x) file name. However, rename doesn't acknowledge hidden or system files. Any ideas on how to remove it? The original creator cannot access the file. The system is a Windows 2003 server with NTFS and SMB file sharing (normal windows file sharing).

• Outlook unable to print email

  I have an installation of Outlook 2003 that won't print emails as of this morning. It can print calendars, and every other program can print fine. Outlook won't print the emails to any printer, not even a PDF creator. As soon as you hit "Print" nothing happens, there's no notification that the print job was sent or anything. The print server never receives a request to print from the computer.

• SFTP logging: is there a way?

  I'm wondering if there is a way to log commands received by the server. It can be all SSH commands, as long as it includes information on commands related to file transfer. I'm having issues with an SFTP client and the creator is asking for logs, but I am unable to find any existing logs. I'm looking to log on both or either CentOS or OS X (although I suspect if it's possible, it'd be similar on both).

I have Windows 7 x64 ent. - name: backupfb - added to domain with shared folder on drive e: (e:\backup) 50 clients/laptops with TSM Tivoli fastback for workstations who save files on shared folder And I need to configure proper permission for my shared folders that only owner of folder can access to their folders. Folder structure is: e:\backup <- shared as a "backup" folder \\backupfb\backup\ e:\backup\BackupAdmin <-- directory is used by the Tivoli Storage Manager FastBack for Workstations client to download revisions and configurations. Nodes require read-only access to these directories e:\backup\RealTimeBackup <-- enable client accounts to create directories that are only accessible by the account that created them. As a result, the directory that contains data for a node is not created until that node connects to the server. • "Operation System not found" Dell XPS 15Z L511Z

  Although title is the same problem is different. I've installed Ubuntu 14.04 Trusty on my HP EliteBook 6930p Notebook. And I was trying to create a bootable usb for my DELL XPS 15z. After successful creation of usb with usb-creator-gtk I plugged in bootable usb stick to DELL laptop. The error message was "Operation System not found". I tried several things but could not make it. When I check from working Ubuntu, I can see that usb is bootable and has files for installation.

• How to build a game like HaxBall?

  I'm a coder interested in game development, and I want to build a very simple p2p (real time) game. The perfect example for this is haxball. The client/server model doesn't matter, it could be like haxball (i.e. the room creator is the host) or changing host, or the server is host (if there is such a thing) I just want to learn the basics to create a field where players can move their characters in real time. So where should I start? Please guide me into the right direction. And with examples please. I found out that RTMFP does what I seek, but how do I use it?   After installing 11.10 on my Dell Studo 15 (Model 1557) laptop, it started to overheat. Recently it even shutdown twice saying that critical temperature has reached even when I was just idling (not even a single program was open except for Firefox). After learning that it is a problem with 3.0.0 kernel I decided to roll back to 10.04 LTS. I have downloaded the most recent 10.04 iso from ubuntu.com and created a live USB using startup disk creator in 11.10. But when I am trying to boot from USB I am getting the following error vesamenu.c32: not a COM32R image I have installed ubuntu from usb stick a couple of dozen times before this and I think it is not a problem with my hardware. Please tell me what to do.

• Can't boot Ubuntu 12.10 32 or 64 Bit, only Ubuntu 12.04 32 Bit [closed]

  Possible Duplicate: My computer boots to a black screen, what options do I have to fix it? i tried to install Ubuntu 12.04 64Bit, 12.10 32 and 64Bit, but it doesn't work. I'm used the Ubuntu 12.04 32Bit Start Disc Creator and also Unetboot on Win7, the installation-process are finished and i restart without the Stick. I can choose for example 12.10 and it starts writing "start ... [OK], ...", but then it hangs most on "Stop Kernel Messages [OK]". Then i can only shutdown normal the system and it writes stopping, shutdown and something like that. I am use an Aspire One D270 Netbook with Intel Atom N2600. It also doesn't work to try Ubuntu 12.10 from running on USB Stick. It starts, but then its black and the cursor blink on the left upside. Please can you help me? :(

• Burning Snow Leopard DMG on Ubuntu

  So I have a SL Copy of Mac OS X Snow Leopard.DMG and I am running Ubuntu 12.0.4. I tried burn the DMG to a DVD using CD/DVD Creator however when I try, it comes up with a message saying 'The size of the file is over 2 GiB. Files larger than 2 GiB are not supported by the ISO9660 standard in its first and second versions (the most widespread ones). It is recommended to use the third version of the ISO9660 standard, which is supported by most operating systems, including Linux and all versions of Windows™. However, Mac OS X cannot read images created with version 3 of the ISO9660 standard.' How do I bypass this so my DVD is bootable on my iMac. By the way, I'm running Ubuntu on the iMac and it is my only partition. No other OS Installed

• Can't boot without Flash Drive plugged in

  (Sorry for my bad English) I had Ubuntu 12.04 Beta installed on my computer. When 12.04 was finally released, I made a bootable USB Flash Drive using Startup Disk Creator. Then I decided to check if this drive works properly and to reinstall the system on my desktop. I must add, my desktop behaves a bit strange when it comes to bootable USB's, it recognizes them as HDD. In BIOS I changed priority of boot so USB Flash Drive (recognized as HDD) was first. Successfully booted, I installed Ubuntu. Everything worked fine, but... Now I cannot boot from my real HDD. Every time I want to boot, I put the USB Flash Drive into my computer, boot, safely remove it and everything works. What have I to do, to repair boot? Thank you for your time!

• Do you know a good html mailing list management software with admin levels?

  I'm basically looking for a program/app/script (can be commercial) which I can ideally install on a windows server (we can run asp, asp.net php mssql) we have different groups of people who send newsletters to web members, I want to bring it all into one app which I can monitor and control. Ideally it would be able to create html newsletters, (with some templates) track emails and click throughs. Manage email lists subscribe/unsubscribes. And importantly have different levels of admin, so a newsletter creator could log in and create and send off an email, it goes into a queue where a communications editor can have an overview of all newsletters and approve the sending of the emails or edit them before they are sent off. before I start coding something up myself I thought I'd ask if anyone has any advice! • No dual boot option, no boot priority order

  I installed Ubuntu yesterday. I partitioned my C: when it was asked to give memory allocation to Ubuntu. The version is 12.04. I was able to install Ubuntu completely: Ubuntu is successfully installed. Restart you computer. I restarted and there was no Ubuntu option. Windows 7 also asked for a boot repair. So I did that too. I then wanted to change my boot priority order to Ubuntu but couldn't find it in BIOS section. I allotted 20GB to Ubuntu and it is deducted from C: but I couldn't see the partitioned drive in Windows 7. Wubi was working fine before on PC with dual boot option. I used Linux Live key creator to boot my PC through pen drive.
