• How can I generate signed distance fields (2D) in real time, fast?

  In a previous question, it was suggested that signed distance fields can be precomputed, loaded at runtime and then used from there. For reasons I will explain at the end of this question (for people interested), I need to create the distance fields in real time. There are some papers out there for different methods which are supposed to be viable in real-time environments, such as methods for Chamfer distance transforms and Voronoi diagram-approximation based transforms (as suggested in this presentation by the Pixeljunk Shooter dev guy), but I (and thus can be assumed a lot of other people) have a very hard time actually putting them to use, since they're usually long, largely bloated with math and not very algorithmic in their explanation. What algorithm would you suggest for creating the distance fields in real-time (favourably on the GPU) especially considering the resulting quality of the distance fields? Since I'm looking for an actual explanation/tutorial as opposed to a link to just another paper or slide, this question will receive a bounty once it's eligible for one :-). • practical way to learn C?

  I want to dig into C and normally when I want to learn a new language I think of a simple/attainable project goal that has some practical purpose (make use of an api, automate a task, etc...) I'm having a harder time coming up with one for C mainly because everything I read points to the fact that C's primary use currently is in embedded systems and more complex software projects like operating systems. Does this point me to the fact that I don't need to learn it or that I just need to be a bit more convoluted in my learning strategy? References to practical learning resources? (tutorial/how to that produces an end result that has some purpose/benifit)

• Debugging Minimum Translation Vector

  I implemented the minimum translation vector from codezealot's tutorial on SAT (Separating Axis Theorem) but I'm having an issue I can't quite figure out. Here's the example I have: As you can see in top and bottom left images regardless of the side the of the green car which red car is penetrating the MTV for the red car still remains as a negative number also here is the same example when the front of the red car is facing the opposite direction the number will always be positive. When the red car is past the half way through the green car it should switch polarity. I thought I'd compensated for this in my code, but apparently not either that or it's a bug I can find. • Why do node packages put a comma on a newline?

  I'm learning node.js and am trying out Express. My first app had this code: var express = require('express') , routes = require('./routes') , user = require('./routes/user') , http = require('http') , path = require('path'); Reading through the mongoose tutorial gives me this: var mongoose = require('mongoose') , db = mongoose.createConnection('localhost', 'test'); On strict mode, JSHint gives me app.js: line 6, col 32, Bad line breaking before ','. Which shows that I'm not the only one out there who's bugged by this syntax. Is there any reason to declare vars this way instead of adding the comma at the end of the line?

• What is a good way to keep track of strings for dictionary lookups?

  I am working through the Windows 8 app tutorial. They have some code about saving app data like so: private void NameInput_TextChanged(object sender, TextChangedEventArgs e) { Windows.Storage.ApplicationDataContainer roamingSettings = Windows.Storage.ApplicationData.Current.RoamingSettings; roamingSettings.Values["userName"] = nameInput.Text; } I have worked with C# in the past and found that things like using constant string values (like "userName" in this case) for keys could get messy because auto-complete did not work and it was easy to forget if I had made an entry for a setting before and what it was called. So if I don't touch code for awhile I end up accidentally creating multiple entries for the same value that are named slightly differently. Surely there is a better way to keep track of the strings that key to those values. What is a good solution to this problem?

• 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath

  I am a new user of Linux, it has been recommended to me by my friend. He told me to install software called IntelliJ Idea IDE. Well I have been following the tutorial. But now when I try to open "idea.sh", an error message pops-up: 'tools.jar' is not in IDEA classpath. Please ensure JAVA_HOME points to JDK rather than JRE. Please remember that I'm new to Ubuntu and I'm planning for a nice long stay once I get myself into it :) Also I do not know if I am running a correct Java6 JDK. When I do java -version, this is what I get: java version "1.6.0_23" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.11pre) (6b23~pre10-0ubuntu5) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b11, mixed mode) Thank You for reading this and I hope I will get a nice response.

• Writing jenkins plugin: where is the documentation?

  On my current project we're using Jenkins to monitor our builds. Now they want me to write a Jenkins plugin to add some more monitoring parameters. I've taken a look at how the status monitor plugin works, and I can't figure some things out. I've tried to look for documentation for writing a plugin, but that seems to be sorely lacking. (the site only mentions how to generate the base project, and refers to a tutorial that's not that informative) What I'm trying to do is just add some options to each build, add a link, and a monitoring page. Adding to the main page is apparently done by adding the action, but I'm still trying to figure out the rest. And how it all ties in. Does anyone have any pointers, or a place where I can find some decent documentation?

To do so I was setting up an system plugin with the following directory structure: languageroot/languageroot.php languageroot/form/form.xml As you can see in the posted code, that is all very basic to try out. Is it possible to inject the field without touching the edit.php? Is there anywhere a good tutorial about the JForm api? Is a system-plugin the right kind, or could it be a content plugin, or should it even be a component?

  i'm new in ubuntu and i'm having some trouble. 1) I downloaded Eclipse installer from official page but I don't know how to install it without the software center or downloading it again. 2) I also downloaded apt Wally (to change wallpaper periodly), but now it doesn't appear in searches, only when I use the console.   Hi, I really really want to find this package. Because after I saw the youtube clip I realized it's just one of those things I must have done before I die. • New to iPhone Development - iOS5 Storyboard

  I'm new here and pretty new to iOS development. My question is basically, should I learn the old school development methods or just learn how to do things using the latest tools (i.e. Storyboard)? I've had a go with the Storyboard feature of XCode 4.2 and it's very powerful. My only concern is that it requires iOS 5. I don't mind learning the old way of doing things but I've been having trouble finding tutorials/examples for XCode 4.2 that don't use the storyboard. An example would be the with my trouble finding a good tutorial on how to embed a Navigation Controller into a TabBarController. A lot of the material out there seems to be for older version of XCode. Using the storyboard I'm able to set this up with seconds but still haven't managed to get it working without it. So in short :) would you guys suggest I continue my project using the Storyboard or make the extra effort to do things a little more manually?

By flowchart I mean a defined system of techniques that the developer goes through in a certain sequence, trying to solve the problem at hand.   I've got about a year in Java experience, and would like to set up a server and client for an applet game. However, there doesn't appear to be any tutorials out there on anything like I want to use. I would the server to be able to store an array of x and y coordinates with a player name somehow associated to them, and send them to multiple clients in a short time span. I would like the client implemented in the applet, and be able to request any player's position data. I'd like to use UDP, because it seems to be the best option for efficient (if less reliable) transmission of data. If anyone could give me some pointers on how to do such a project, or point me to an appropriate tutorial, I'd certainly appreciate it.

• Confusion installing mongodb manually because of sitting behing a proxy

  I am forced to install mongodb manually on an Ubuntu server because the machine sits behind a proxy and there is no way to temporary open port 11371 for key exchange to happen. • Sensor based vs. AABB based collision

  I'm trying to write a simple collision system, which will probably be primarily used for 2D platformers, and I've been planning out an AABB system for a few weeks now, which will work seamlessly with my grid data structure optimization. I picked AABB because I want a simple system, but I also want it to be perfect. Now, I've been hearing a lot lately about a different method to handle collision, using sensors, which are placed in the important parts of the entity. I understand it's a good way to handle slopes, better than AABB collision. The thing is, I can't find a basic explanation of how it works, let alone a comparison of it and the AABB method. If someone could explain it to me, or point me to a good tutorial, I'd very much appreciate it, and also a comparison of the advantages and disadvantages of the two techniques would be nice.

• I want to record a screencast of a processing sketch

  I have a created a music visualisation using Processing. I now want to convert that to a video, and the least obtrusive way I could think of is to record a screencast. I figured exporting Processing to video including audio, from within Processing itself, on ubuntu seemed an unsolved issue. Very hard and also could cause timing sync issues (since the music keeps running while images are captured). So move on to the screencast method. Dead-easy, I figured. But I was wrong. First hurdle was to find a way to record the sound from the audio (and not the mic). I did find a tutorial for that here. In short: use gtk-recordmydesktop and pulse audio. But, apparently, what happens: Processing does not use ALSA. When the sound is playing, it does not appear in the Pulse Audio mixer. How can I record the audio now?
