  • Coldfusion 8 Application Crashes Under Heavy Load

    - by KM01
Hello, We have a CF8 app that runs for 20-25 minutes before crashing under heavy load ~ 1200 users. This load is generated by our load testing tool: 1200 users ramped up in 5 mins (approx behavior of our users), running for an hour. We have this app on Solaris 10, Apache 2, JRun 4 and Oracle 10g. Java version is 1.6. During the initial load tests, the thread dumps pointed to monitor deadlocks that pointed to sessions. "jrpp-173": waiting to lock monitor 0x019fdc60 (object 0x6b893530, a java.util.Hashtable), which is held by "scheduler-1" "scheduler-1": waiting to lock monitor 0x026c3ce0 (object 0x6abe2f20, a coldfusion.monitor.memory.SessionMemoryMonitor$TopMemoryUsedSessions), which is held by "jrpp-167" "jrpp-167": waiting to lock monitor 0x019fdc60 (object 0x6b893530, a java.util.Hashtable), which is held by "scheduler-1" We increased the number of sessions relative to the number of CPUs (48 simultaneous threads against 32 CPUs), and the deadlock went away. While varying the simultaneous threads helped a little bit in terms of response time, the CF server still tanked in 20-25 minutes during all of these tests. We ran more thread dumps, and saw a thread locking a monitor, for e.g.: "jrpp-475" prio=3 tid=0x02230800 nid=0x2c5 runnable [0x4397d000] java.lang.Thread.State: RUNNABLE at java.util.HashMap.getEntry(HashMap.java:347) at java.util.HashMap.containsKey(HashMap.java:335) at java.util.HashSet.contains(HashSet.java:184) at coldfusion.monitor.memory.MemoryTracker.onAddObject(MemoryTracker.java:124) at coldfusion.monitor.memory.MemoryTrackerProxy.onReplaceValue(MemoryTrackerProxy.java:598) at coldfusion.monitor.memory.MemoryTrackerProxy.onPut(MemoryTrackerProxy.java:510) at coldfusion.util.CaseInsensitiveMap.put(CaseInsensitiveMap.java:250) at coldfusion.util.FastHashtable.put(FastHashtable.java:43) - locked <0x6f7e1a78> (a coldfusion.runtime.Struct) at coldfusion.runtime.CfJspPage._arrayset(CfJspPage.java:1027) at coldfusion.runtime.CfJspPage._arraySetAt(CfJspPage.java:2117) at cfvalidation2ecfc1052964961$funcSETUSERAUDITDATA.runFunction(/app/docs/apply/cfcs/validation.cfc:377) As you see in the last line above there were several references CFMs and CFCs, and the lines have "cflock" tags, which were scoped to the "application." We (the dev team) then changed them to be scoped to a "name". After more load tests, there is no locking going on and there no deadlocks, but now the application tanks in 7-10 minutes. We've gotten system, network and DB reports from the respective admins, and they are not being taxed; even watched the server stats with server monitor, top, prstat, ran sar reports, etc. So we believe it is an issue with the CF server or maybe the JVM. I am running out of ideas as to what else we can try. Disclaimer: I am not a CF developer or Admin. I am just running the load test, analyzing the reports, threads etc, and sharing the results with the dev and admin teams, and trying the next change, and so on. So far no dice. Has anyone run into something similar? How did you go about diagnosing and troubleshooting? All thoughts and pointers welcome. Thank you for your time! KM

  • windows 7 numlock issues with rdp causes machine to go crazy

    - by rphilli5
After going through a few rdp sessions to xp machines, when I come back to my local machine it appears some setting has been tripped so every key I type is registered as one of the function/alt keys plus the key I type, causing windows to open and close windows randomly and other erratic behavior. Pressing windows key and numlock returns everything to normal. Any ideas what causes this. I have experienced this on multiple win 7 machines, but never in vista or xp.

  • What's the difference between Defaults and Properties when changing cmd.exe or PowerShell's settings?

    - by mmm bacon
I want to change the font used by both cmd.exe and PowerShell. When I right click in the window border, I see both Defaults and Properties: What's the difference? One would think Defaults was for all sessions, and Properties was for the current session. However, changes to Properties are persisted even after relaunching cmd.exe. Another problem is that changing the font in either Defaults or Properties doesn't actually change the font. This is on Windows 8.

  • Transferring PuTTY session data

    - by toolkit
My Windows NT account name was changed, and when starting PuTTY it now appears that my saved session information has been lost. The FAQ suggests that PuTTY sessions should be stored in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY. Wikipedia explains that HKCU maps to NTUSER.DAT and USRCLASS.DAT under the current user's Desktop and Settings folder. I still have these files for my old account name, but I'm guessing there is no easy way to extract data from these files?

  • Using iptables to forward traffic destined for specific ip via specific interface

    - by shapeshifter
I want to forward traffic destined for a specific ip from my internal network via a specific interface. I have two interfaces which are currently load balanced. I need all requests for a certain ip to go out via eth0 otherwise my external ip changes and sessions are dropped. eg. all requests from 10.1.1.1/24 to ip 11.22.33.44 on port 443 must go out via interface eth0. How can I do this with iptables?

  • Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

    - by lfaraone
I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

  • Windows Server 2008 R2 loses ability to connect to network share

    - by JamesB
I could sure use some help with this one: I've got two Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 Terminal Servers, as well as several 2003 servers (DNS / Wins / AD / DC). On the two 2008 boxes, every now and then they will get in this mode where you can't map a drive to a random server. I say random server because it's not always the same server that you can't map to. Here is a summary of what I can and can't do: net view \\servername Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. net view \\FQDN This always works. net view \\IPAddress This always works. ping servername Sometimes this works, sometimes it does not. ping FQDN This always works. ping IPAddress This always works. I've been looking all over for a solution to this. It sure seems like Microsoft would have a hotfix by now. The kicker to this is that it sometimes works great, especially after a reboot. It may run for 2 weeks just fine, but all of a sudden it will fail to resolve the remote server name. It will then be this way for a few days, then it might start working again. Also, while it's in the mode of not working, the other servers have no problem getting there. It's just these 2008 R2 Terminal Servers. Setting a static entry in the Hosts file and LMHosts does not make it work. All servers have static IPs and they are registered in DNS and Wins just fine. Here is a long thread on MS Technet of the exact same problem, but they don't have a good solution. Here is their workaround (It was from June of 2010): Good news - a hotfix is in the works and a workaround has been identified: Root cause is that since this is SMB1 all user sessions are on a single TCP connection to the remote server. The first user to initiate a connection to the remote SMB server has their logon-ID added to the structure defining the connection. If that user logs off all subsequent uses of that TCP session fail as the logon-id is no longer valid. As a workaround for now to keep the issue from happening you will want to have the user not logoff the Terminal Server only disconnect their sessions. Any word from anyone out there about a solution? Any help would sure be appreciated. Thanks, James

  • Is there a way to save and restore a set of tabs in a linux file manager?

    - by N Rahl
For a frequent task, I need a file manager window open with about 8 tabs, each a different location. I'd like to be able to open the tabs once and then save them as a "tab set", so that in future sessions, I can simply open a file manager and restore the saved tab set, without having to open each tab manually. I'm running Mint 16 with Thunar, but could use a different file manager if needed. Is there a way to do this?

  • Is it a good idea to put "screen -r" in my .bashrc?

    - by marcusw
I'd like to use screen to keep ssh sessions alive on my server. It would be nice if I could automatically resume any running session for my user when I log in. The straightforward way to do this would be adding "screen -r" to my .bashrc, and this seems to work fine. I'm just wondering if this will break anything under conditions which I haven't tested yet. Anyone with experience here who can tell me whether this is what I should do?

  • Limit display/session resolution for machines @ VDI environment on RDS 2012

    - by WarP
I have couple of windows 7 entprise virtual machines in collection as part of VDI environment - so users connecting to them through RDS 2012 web site. Is there any way to fix resolution of remote desktops, that user receives (instead of full screen all time) ? I've tried different group policies, but none of them are worked, probably because all those policies are for RDS sessions and not virtual desktops ... And i don't know how to limit resolution locally on win7 machine itself, so connecting users will receive fixed resolution.

  • GNU Screen: one window per screen or one screen with multiple windows?

    - by yalestar
I've inherited a few sys admin tasks recently and am trying to wrap my head around using screen. The way the previous guy left it, there are four screen sessions running, some of which have two or three windows running within. It doesn't appear that he was using any particular convention, so I ask you: Is it better to have each process in its own screen session, or better to group similar processes into a single screen? Or something different entirely?

  • tmux equivalent of "screen -R"?

    - by Drew Frank
The tmux attach command acts more like a combination of screen -r and screen -x -- first it trys to attach to the most recently detached session, and then if none is available it will attach to a currently attached session. I want to emulate the behavior of screen -R: first try to attach to a detached session, then start a new session if there were no detached sessions. What is the best way to achieve this in tmux?

  • How can I start new window in the same screen session automatically?

    - by Mato
I read How can I start multiple screen sessions automatically?, but I don't understand the first accepted reply: screen -dmS "$SESSION_NAME" "$COMMAND" "$ARGUMENTS" In my case I need to automatically create one screen session for one script, and afterwards I need to create a new window in the same session for another script. Manually, I would: run screen enter command CTRL+A CTRL+C enter command CTRL+A CTRL+D How can I do this automatically in a script? A simple example would help me a lot. Thank you for replies.

  • Recovering Root Password

    - by Melvin
This hasn't happened to me yet but I am documenting this process just in case. Let's say I can't remember my root password for my linux server. Every example of this scenerio that I can find says to first boot into single user mode. What if my server is currently running in multiuser mode and I have no sessions open as root. How exactly do I order an orderly shutdown without root access so that I can begin the password recovery process?

  • What happens when Phusion PassengerMaxPoolSize is reached?

    - by bmurtagh
The subject of my post pretty much sums up my question: What happens when PassengerMaxPoolSize is reached? For Example: PassengerMaxPoolSize is configured to 40 based off our system specs What happens if all 40 sessions are active (processing a request) and our load balancer passes another session to this particular web server? This would send a 41st session to be processed without an available Passenger process.

  • How can I see who's VPNed in and for how long?

    - by AppsByAaron
I know how to view the VPN sessions currently logged in and how long that connection has been on but I want to be able to view a history of these activities over long periods of time. I don't think I need employee monitoring software...I just want to see who has VPNed overnight. We are using Windows 2003. Any help is appreciated.

  • WTSQuerySessionInformation returning empty strings

    - by Benj
    I've written a program which should query the Terminal Services API and print out some state information about the sessions running on a terminal services box. I'm using the WTSQuerySessionInformation function to do this and it's returning some data but most of the data seems to be missing... Does anyone know why? Here's my program: void WTSGetString( HANDLE serverHandle, DWORD sessionid, WTS_INFO_CLASS command, wchar_t* commandStr) { DWORD bytesReturned = 0; LPTSTR pData = NULL; if (WTSQuerySessionInformation(serverHandle, sessionid, command, &pData, &bytesReturned)) { wprintf(L"\tWTSQuerySessionInformationW - session %d - %s returned \"%s\"\n", sessionid, commandStr, pData); } else { wprintf(L"\tWTSQuerySessionInformationW - session %d - %s failed - error=%d - ", sessionid, commandStr, GetLastError()); printLastError(NULL, GetLastError()); } WTSFreeMemory(pData); } void ExtractFromWTS( HANDLE serverHandle, DWORD sessionid ) { WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSInitialProgram, L"WTSInitialProgram"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSApplicationName, L"WTSApplicationName"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSWorkingDirectory, L"WTSWorkingDirectory"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSOEMId, L"WTSOEMId"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSSessionId, L"WTSSessionId"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSUserName, L"WTSUserName"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSWinStationName, L"WTSWinStationName"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSDomainName, L"WTSDomainName"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSConnectState, L"WTSConnectState"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientBuildNumber, L"WTSClientBuildNumber"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientName, L"WTSClientName"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientDirectory, L"WTSClientDirectory"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientProductId, L"WTSClientProductId"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientHardwareId, L"WTSClientHardwareId"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientAddress, L"WTSClientAddress"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientDisplay, L"WTSClientDisplay"); WTSGetString(serverHandle, sessionid, WTSClientProtocolType, L"WTSClientProtocolType"); } int _tmain(int argc, _TCHAR* argv[]) { PWTS_SESSION_INFOW ppSessionInfo = 0; DWORD pCount; if(!WTSEnumerateSessions(WTS_CURRENT_SERVER_HANDLE, 0, 1, &ppSessionInfo, &pCount)) { printLastError(L"WTSEnumerateSessions", GetLastError()); return 1; } wprintf(L"%d WTS sessions found on host\n", pCount); for (unsigned int i=0; i<pCount; i++) { wprintf(L"> session=%d, stationName = %s\n", ppSessionInfo[i].SessionId, ppSessionInfo[i].pWinStationName); ExtractFromWTS(WTS_CURRENT_SERVER_HANDLE, ppSessionInfo[i].SessionId); LPWSTR sessionstr = new wchar_t[200]; wsprintf(sessionstr, L"%d", ppSessionInfo[i].SessionId); } return 0; } And here's the output: C:\Users\Administrator\Desktop>ObtainWTSStartShell.exe empserver1 4 WTS sessions found on host > session=0, stationName = Services WTSQuerySessionInformationW - session 0 - WTSInitialProgram failed - error=87 - The paramete r is incorrect.
