• kernel mem parameter

  As a last resort to my question, I am yet to try the mem parameter of kernel to force it to use the specified amount of RAM. Short Summary - I can only see 3.2GB RAM on a 64bit OS and am not sure ifs a hardware limitation, so wants to try as I found a post on Ubuntuforums. My question is if its ok to play with my resident Ubuntu install or should I be using a live bootable usb? What values do I try (I have 6GB with only 3.2GB being usable) and how to keep it safe? I don't want to burn any of my hardware component at this point of time or make the system unbootable. Running Ubuntu 11.10 with kernel 3.0.0-13-generic

• Google analytics/adwords account and leaking of private data

  I am frequently asked to log into clients google analytics and adwords accounts. If I forget to log out before visiting other google properties (google search, youtube etc), this leaves tracks of my views/searches etc, exposing my activities to the client. Summary: Client gives me access to their Google Analytics / AdWords account I log into clients Analytics account and do some stuff Then in another tab I perform some related google searches to solve some related issues Issues solved, I then close the Analytics tab I then visit google.com, perform some unrelated searches I then visit YouTube, view some unrelated videos All Web and YouTube searches are recorded in clients google account, thus leaking potentially sensitive data Even assuming that I remember to log out correctly at step 4 (as I do 95% of the time), anything I do at step 3 is exposed to the client. I would be surprised if this is not a very common issue. I'm looking for a technical solution to ensure that this can never happen. Any ideas?

• Optimizing hierarchical transform

  I'm transforming objects in 3D space by transforming each vector with the object's 4x4 transform matrix. In order to achieve hierarchical transform, I transform the child by its own matrix, and then the child by the parent matrix. This becomes costly because objects deeper in the display tree have to be transformed by all the parent objects. This is what's happening, in summary: Root -- transform its verts by Root matrix Parent -- transform its verts by Parent, Root matrix Child -- transform its verts by Child, Parent, Root matrix Is there a faster way to transform vertices to achieve hierarchical transform? What If I first concatenated each transform matrix with the parent matrices, and then transform verts by that final resulting matrix, would that work and wouldn't that be faster?   What layout of resume works best for experienced programmers? Currently my layout is: Contact Details Focus (goal) Technical Skills Professional Experience (Responsibilities + achievements at each job) Education Interests I feel my current layout uses up too much valuable space. Most of the online templates feel like junior Resumes with emphasis on education so I am not sure how I can improve it. I wonder how many hiring managers actually care about goal/objective? To me it looks useless. Also, is it necessary to have summary of technical skills/technologies? If so, would it not make more sense for it to be mentioned later in the Resume rather then at the top? Finally, do you have separate section for achievements? Many thanks.

• What grammatical tense should I write my specifications in?

  We are currently writing functional and technical specifications in a two column format; summary sentence and technical detail. The details often refer to an appendix with diagrams, layout designs ect. However I am struggling with what tense to write it in: With past tense as if the work is done I struggle to show highlight extensions of exiting work. Future tense as in it needs to do X starts to sound like a to do list or Tense neutral very hard as it has either going to be done or is done. To add further confusion this specification may be read by people who do not have English as a first language.

Tables used: Quotes, Users QUOTES TABLE qid, (quote id) owner_uid, creator_uid SQL SYNTAX: SELECT q.qid, q.owner_uid, q.creator_uid, owner.fname, owner.lname FROM quotes q, (SELECT u.fname, u.lname FROM users u WHERE u.uid = q.owner_uid) AS owner WHERE q.qid = '#' SUMMARY I want to be able to use the quote table's owner_uid and specify it for the owner table so I can return all the owner info for that particular quote. The problem is, q.owner_uid is not recognized in the owner sub-query. What am I doing wrong?

I am working on customizing how my results appear in Google as best as possible. I have learned about the meta tags to customize the text summary. However, I have some hierarchical parts to my website. When a result appears related to the "tip-of-the-iceberg", I would like to show links related to the "child" pages. For instance, if you Google "Walmart" you will see the following links listed with the result: Electronics TV & Video Departments Furniture Toys Girls Living Room Computers Is there any way that I can help Google determine which links to show and the text to display for these child links on my site?   Wouldn't it be nice if you could spawn GlassFish instances as VirtualBox virtual machines? Well now with early versions of GlassFish 4.0 you can! This page on the GlassFish Wiki documents the steps to get this to work. It walks you through the various VirtualBox (network and services) and GlassFish configuration steps including the creation of VDI templates (typically JeOS images) to finally create a virtual machine on the fly, as part of the typical GlassFish deployment process.   I don't understand a lot about game engines and modules for Python, even though I'm aware of the existance of PyGame and Pyglets, so please don't bash me too hard if I'll wrote something wrong in this question :-) When I upgraded my Mac to the latest version of OS X, I noticed for the first time that Apple is providing a library named Sprite kit for developing games on both iOS and OS X. It looks to me fairly complete, and the fact is managed by a big company gives me the impression of being well-supported for the time being; in summary, it looks... cool. Actually in order to take advantage of "Sprite kit" you need to code in Obj-C. Since I don't know Obj-C but only a little bit of Python, do you think that there's a chance that sooner or later someone will make a wrapper for Python ? Thank you very much and best regards

• How do I Export to excel on aspx page?

  I am trying to take data that I request from an access database and put it into and excel file on the client computer. I usually use ajax to request a summary of the data I need. It is formatted into an html table. I need that table to be in an excel format for the user to download. What I have tried already is to use the vb.net code to open excel and silently save the data to a file, however I realized it's the sever side that opens excel, not the client side, in my locally testing of the code, excel would open on my machine and create the file. When running this on the network, I realized excel isn't on the server, I am not sure if I should just install it, or try and steam the file.

Does it make sense to store documents in the same Git repository as code - it seems like this conflicts with the nature of the git revision flow. Here is a summary of my question(s): Is the Git revisioning style going to be confusing if both code and documents are checked into the same repository? Experiences with this? • Randomly spawning bitmaps on cnvas

  I need some ideas in order to finish algorithm. I'm randomly placing objects (bitmaps) on canvas without overlapping. Time needed to finish it is my problem. When I need to spawn for example 80% of canvas it takes to long. So i was thinking : I should make some change when the bitmaps take off 50 % of canvas. I want to tell algorithm that it should generate new locations (x,y) where it is free space. My question is : How to render new location (x,y) in place where is free space. In summary: Things I know : object location (x,y) 4 corners (x,y) of object object width, height canvas width, height Any suggestions?

• Alternating links and slide down content on a list of sub sections

  I have a page for a doctor's practice. In the summary page for the practice there is a list of subsections such as Women's, Men's, Children, Sport, etc. Some of these sub sections are very large, others can be a paragraph or more with a short unordered list. In terms of content volume, the large subsections warrant their own separate page, the smaller one's not so much. I created a little plugin which enables me to use the list of subsections in 2 ways. When clicking on the title of a larger section, you'll be sent through to it's own page. For the smaller sections, a slide down box will open with the information. Is this a good way to handle my information architecture? Should I be giving the smaller sub sections their own page for SEO purposes?

• How to install all versions (stable/beta/unstable) of Google Chrome side by side without conflicts?

And each time I'm trying to install beta or/and unstable versions then I run into the same problem: The following packages will be REMOVED google-chrome-stable The following NEW packages will be installed google-chrome-beta 0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 1 to remove and 0 not upgraded. Need to get 34.5 MB of archives. After this operation, 3,109 kB of additional disk space will be used. Do you want to continue [Y/n]? I need to remove the first version before installing another. I know I can't install existing packages side by side but I'm looking for solution not for answer like: "You can't do it", I already know I can not. So in summary my question is: How can I install all Google Chrome versions next to each other? (There needs to be a way..)

• Dual boot: Linux Grub loader does not show windows

  my computer previously only had windows installed on it. Recently I decided to try Linux and opted for a dual boot so I installed Linux Mint 17 Cinnamon 64-bit on a separate hard drive within my computer. After installation my computer would directly boot to Linux upon start up and did not even show a grub screen. Using the boot-repair I was finally able to make the Grub loader show a boot list upon start up, but the Windows partition is not there. • From the Coalface - 2 - Work as hard as you can to be as lazy as you can

  On one project, the standard build involved building the database from scratch producing a build log that was about 100,000 lines long.  Manually paging throught this log took hours and it was very easy to miss any errors. The solution was to write a filter that read the log file and output a summary file with each output line pepended with the line number in the original file. Sucessive iterations eliminated more noise lines. Diagnostic displays required escaping. The final output was just a few hundred lines long and the errors were easy to spot. The filter program took less time to to write than one manual pass reading the log file.  The utility digested the log file in about 1 second. Now database build errors could be identified quickly instead of after hours of manual examination or lengthy system testing. A few minutes consideration of the task led to a tremendous improvement in quality.

• Ubuntu 13.04 not detecting operating system Windows 8

  I have a Samsung NP740U3E with pre-installed Windows 8 (boots with UEFI). I installed Ubuntu 13.04 without problems. Later, Windows 8 did a BIOS update which messed up everything, nothing would boot. I recovered everything and went back to fabric settings. Now Windows 8 works fine, but when I try to install Ubuntu it does not detect any operating system, so I can`t install Ubuntu alongside Windows. I`ve googled as much as I can, ran a boot-repair, disabled fast- and secure-boot. I have a GPT disc, been looking into gdisk without luck. Here`s my boot-repair summary http://paste.ubuntu.com/5835719/ Is it necessary to convert the GPT disc to MBR? Is it possible to hard-reset the disc "even more" than fabric settings? My goal is to convert the data in an 3D .obj file (vertices, normals, faces) to CSS3D (width, height, rotateX,Y,Z and/or similar transforms).
