• CSS3 Gradients and border-radius leading to extraneous background in webkit

  Hello all, After my 1st question with relation to CSS3 gradients in which I was recreating an 'inner glow' I've now got to the point where I'm not so happy with the way in which webkit renders the effect. Basically, if you give an element a background colour and apply a border radius to it, webkit lets the background colour "bleed" out to fill the surrounding box (making it look a bit awful) To reproduce the undesirable effect, try something like the following section#featured footer p a { color: rgb(255,255,255); text-shadow: 1px 1px 1px rgba(0,0,0,0.6); text-decoration: none; padding: 5px 10px; border-radius: 15px; -moz-border-radius: 15px; -webkit-border-radius: 15px; background: rgb(98,99,100); -moz-box-shadow: inset 0 0 8px rgba(0,0,0, 0.25); -webkit-box-shadow: inset 0 0 8px rgba(0,0,0, 0.25); } You can see an example of this here: http://iamfriendly.clients.friendlygp.com/ Apparently this appears to be a Windows-only problem, so for those on a Mac, here's a screenshot: (Check the 'carry on reading' button) You'll notice that in Safari/Chrome (the latest available public downloads as well as the latest nightlies as far as I can tell), you get a rather ugly background colour bleed. However, in Firefox, you should be able to see what I'm after. If you're in Internet Explorer, woe betide you. Does anyone know of a technique which will allow me to produce the 'correct' effect? Is there a CSS Property which I've missed that tells webkit to only have the background within the border-radius'd part of the containing box. I could potentially use an image, but I'm really trying to avoid it. Naturally, as we're dealing with CSS3 and the landscape is continually changing, I might just have to 'lump' it and revert to an image. However, if anyone can suggest an alternative I would be very much appreciative!

• pattern matching in .Net consistent with IsolatedStorageFile.GetFileNames() pattern matching

  Is the pattern matching logic used by this API exposed for reuse somewhere in the .Net Framework? Something of the form FilePatternMatch( string searchPattern, stringfileNameToTest ) is what I'm looking for. I'm implementing a temporary workaround for WP7 not filtering the results for this overload and I'd like the solution to both provide a consistent experience and avoid reinventing this functionality if it is exposed. If the behaviour is not exposed for reuse, a regular expression solution (like glob pattern matching in .NET) will suffice and would save me spending the time to test the fine details of what the behaviour should be. Perhaps one of the answers posted in the thread linked above is correct. Since I haven't confirmed the exact behaviour as yet, I wasn't able to determine this at a glance. Feel free to point me to one of those answers if you know it is behaviouraly an exact match to the API referenced in the question title. I could assume the pattern matching is consistent with how DOS handled * and ? in 8.3 file names (I'm familiar with behavioural nuances of that implementation), but it's reasonable to assume Microsoft has evolved pattern matching behaviour for file names in the decade+ since so I thought I would check before proceeding on that assumption.

• Decoding tcp packets using python

  Hello I am trying to decode data received over a tcp connection. The packets are small, no more than 100 bytes. However when there is a lot of them I receive some of the the packets joined together. Is there a way to prevent this. I am using python I have tried to separate the packets, my source is below. • Possible Data Execution Prevention (DEP) problem in Windows 7

  I have a serious problem with my .Net program. It calls a native dll, and then crashes instantly because it can't find a native method. This is behaviour we have seen before, whereby the C# compiler, in its infinite wisdom, sets the flag that the program is DEP compatible, even if it calls a native dll which patently is not. We have the standard workaround for this, where the flag is set to Not DEP Compatible in a post-build step, and this works fine. Everywhere except on my machine. I have Windows 7 32bit, and the program works fine on the Win 7 64bit machines that we have, as well as on Vista and XP; we have not yet been able to check on another Win7 32bit. However, on my machine the DataExecutionPolicy_SupportPolicy is 0, i.e. we have successfully switched DEP off. Does anyone know whether there is some situation in which it can still act? Or any other mechanism which could have the same effect? The dll in question also works fine when called from a native program. We are running out of ideas... any help would be much appreciated!

• Determining whether geographic point is within X meters of a state border (using shapefile for borde

  So I'm writing a Java app, and I've got an ESRI Shapefile which contains the borders of all the U.S. states. What I need is to be able to determine whether any given lat/lon point is within a specified distance from ANY state border line - i.e., I will not be specifying a particular border line, just need to see whether the point is close to any of them. The solution does NOT have to be very precise at all; e.g. I don't need to be dealing with measuring perpendicular to the border, or whatever. Just checking to see if going X meters north, south, east or west would result in crossing a border would be more than sufficient. The solution DOES have to be computationally efficient, as I'll be performing a huge number of these calculations. I'm planning to use the GeoTools library (though if there's a simpler option, I'm all for it) with the Shapefile plugin. What I don't really understand is: Once I've got the shapefile loaded into memory, how do I check to see whether I'm near a border? Thanks! -Dan

• How to implement or emulate an "abstract" OCUnit test class?

  I have a number of Objective-C classes organized in an inheritance hierarchy. They all share a common parent which implements all the behaviors shared among the children. Each child class defines a few methods that make it work, and the parent class raises an exception for the methods designed to be implemented/overridden by its children. This effectively makes the parent a pseudo-abstract class (since it's useless on its own) even though Objective-C doesn't explicitly support abstract classes. The crux of this problem is that I'm unit testing this class hierarchy using OCUnit, and the tests are structured similarly: one test class that exercises the common behavior, with a subclass corresponding to each of the child classes under test. However, running the test cases on the (effectively abstract) parent class is problematic, since the unit tests will fail in spectacular fashion without the key methods. (The alternative of repeating the common tests across 5 test classes is not really an acceptable option.) The non-ideal solution I've been using is to check (in each test method) whether the instance is the parent test class, and bail out if it is. This leads to repeated code in every test method, a problem that becomes increasingly annoying if one's unit tests are highly granular. In addition, all such tests are still executed and reported as successes, skewing the number of meaningful tests that were actually run. What I'd prefer is a way to signal to OCUnit "Don't run any tests in this class, only run them in its child classes." To my knowledge, there isn't (yet) a way to do that, something similar to a +(BOOL)isAbstractTest method I can implement/override. Any ideas on a better way to solve this problem with minimal repetition? Does OCUnit have any ability to flag a test class in this way, or is it time to file a Radar? Edit: Here's a link to the test code in question. Notice the frequent repetition of if (...) return; to start a method, including use of the NonConcreteClass() macro for brevity.

  Is there any alternate way to create stored procedure without putting all query in one long string if criteria of WWHERE clause can be different. Suppose I have Orders table I want to create stored procedure on this table and there are three column on which I wnat to filter records. 1- CustomerId, 2- SupplierId, 3- ProductId. If user only give CustomerId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.CustomerId = @customerId And if user only give ProductId in search criteria then query should be like following SELECT * FROM Orders WHERE Orders.ProductId = @productId And if user only all three CustomerId, ProductId, and SupplierId is given then all three Ids will be used in WHERE to filter. There is also chance that user don't want to filter record then query should be like following SELCT * FROM Orders Whenever I have to create this kind of procedure I put all this in string and use IF conditions to check if arguments (@customeId or @supplierId etc) has values. • Mysteriously empty $_POST array

However, no matter what values I enter in the fields; the result is always: array(2) { ["test"]=> string(0) "" ["action"]=> string(2) "Go" } string(16) "test=&action=Go&" Somehow, the array named test is emptied, the "action" variable does make it through. I've used the Live HTTP Headers extension for Firefox to check whether the POST fields get submitted, and they do. The relevant information from Live HTTP Headers (with a, b and c filled in as values in the textboxes): Content-Type: application/x-www-form-urlencoded Content-Length: 51 test%5B1%5D=a&test%5B2%5D=b&test%5B3%5D=c&action=Go Does anybody have any idea as to why this is happening? • Mysqli query only works on localhost, not webserver

  Hello. I have changed some of my old queries to the Mysqli framework to improve performance. Everything works fine on localhost but when i upload it to the webserver it outputs nothing. After connecting I check for errors and there are none. I also checked the php modules installed and mysqli is enabled. I am certain that it creates a connection to the database as no errors are displayed. Checked the error logs and there is nothing so everything points to a good connection. All the tables exists as well etc. Anyone any ideas because this one has me stuck! Also, if i get this working, will all my other queries still work? Or will i need to make them use the mysqli framework as well? Thanks in advance.

  Hi, I'm trying to upload an iPhone app binary to iTunesConnect and keep getting the following error message "The binary you upload was invalid. the file was not a valid zip file". I had an app upload ok recently but this app is having problems. So after a while I carefully went through the following steps trying to make sure everything was ok. Any help is appreciated. The steps: renamed the project (Project-Rename... enter name into Rename project to:) to release name making sure the name has no spaces. Cleaned project Make sure references in build setting reflect new app name Create new app ID matching project name in iPhone Provisioning Portal Destroyed old developer and distributer provisioning profiles in Provisioning Portal, in XCode and on iPhone. Create new development provisioning profile using new app name. Install development provisioning profile into XCode 8) Build (Release) for iPhone OS 3.1.3 (highest my phone will upgrade to, I'm assuming current released version) Builds, Installs and Runs on actual iPhone: To me this implys App and developer ID's are OK. Create a distributor provisioning profile using existing Distributer ID. Install distributer ID into XCode Clean Checked that "Code Signing Identity" and "Any iPhone OS Device" lines in Build settings are set to Distributor ID Build for release for OS 3.1.3 Check Build results to make sure code is signed with Distributor Profile Reveal .app file and compress (alt click Compress "appName.app") Upload to iTunes connect Gives "The binary you uploaded was invalid. The file was not a valid zip file"

• WPF not applying default styles defined in MergedDictionaries?

  In a WPF application I defined default control styles in separate resource dictionaries (e.g. "ButtonStyle.xaml"), and added them as merged dictionaries to a resource dictionary named "ResDictionary.xaml". If I refer this "ResDictionary.xaml" as merged dictionary in my App.xaml, the default styles are not applied. However, if I refer the "ButtonStyle.xaml", it works correctly. If I recompile the same code in .NET 3.5 or 3.0, it recognizes and applies the default styles referred in "App.xaml" through "ResDictionary.xaml", but not in .NET 4.0. At runtime if I check the Application.Current.Resources dictionary, the default styles are there, but they are not applied, only if I specify the Style property explicitly in the Button control. Are there any solutions to refer a resource dictionary (containig default styles) this way in .NET 4.0? I'm thinking that I should somehow apply the cte recursevely on each PERSONKEY, ROOMKEY grouping on my ROOMUSAGE table but I am not sure how to do that. Any help would be much appreciated, Cheers!

• Vista 64-bits development tools

  Well, okay. There's Visual Studio 2008 and Embarcadero Delphi/Studio that are both able to create 64-bits .NET applications for Vista. And of course a lot of 32-bits applications will run on 64-bits Vista. If not, it's always possible to install VMWare to create a virtual 32-bits Windows XP system to run 32-bits applications. So, plenty of options. But what I would like to see is a list of true 64-bits applications for Windows Vista and better. So if you know any useful 64-bits product, please share! (Especially compilers that generate native 64-bits code.) Tools would basically be anything that would make development a bit easier. Thus, debugging tools, image processing tools to create icons and bitmaps, hex editors to check the contents of binary files, XML editors to change XML files, etc. The tools from SysInternals, for example, seem to provide 64-bits versions or even support 64-bits systems natively. But how about all those other editors, viewers, browsers and other tools that we developers like to use? A 64-bits version of the Norton Commander/Midnight Commander or other file managers would be nice too. And with compilers, how about COBOL/ForTran/ADA/SmallTalk/Lisp/Whatever compiler/languages for Vista? I would just like to see a complete list of anything useful for 64-bits development.

• Finding latency issues (stalls) in embedded Linux systems

  I have an embedded Linux system running on an Atmel AT91SAM9260EK board on which I have two processes running at real-time priority. A manager process periodically "pings" a worker process using POSIX message queues to check the health of the worker process. Usually the round-trip ping takes about 1ms, but very occasionally it takes much longer - about 800ms. There are no other processes that run at a higher priority. It appears the stall may be related to logging (syslog). If I stop logging the problem seems to go away. However it makes no difference if the log file is on JFFS2 or NFS. No other processes are writing to the "disk" - just syslog. What tools are available to me to help me track down why these stalls are occurring? I am aware of latencytop and will be using that. Are there some other tools that may be more useful? Some details: Kernel version: 2.6.32.8 libc (syslog functions): uClibc 0.9.30.1 syslog: busybox 1.15.2

• jQuery ui Accordion degrades in IE6 or IE7, but is working in IE8

  There are two accordions on my page, with custom accordion CSS in another file, differentiated by class and ID names so as not to conflict with each other. The accordions don't show up at all, they just degrade to showing all the content at once, as if all the accordion styling is gone. The accordions are both called around the middle of the page, and there's no difference if they are loaded with $(document).ready. What should I check for in the CSS files? There are no inline-block uses. I am using jQuery 1.3.2.min and jQuery ui 1.7.2, so I'm assuming the autoHeight set to false won't make a difference... This is being used inside a Symfony-based site. Works fine in FF, IE8, Chrome. • Setting EditText imeOptions to actionNext has no effect

  I have a fairly complex (not really) xml layout file. One of the views is a LinearLayout (v1) with two children: an EditText(v2) and another LinearLayout(v3). The child LinearLayout in turn has an EditText(v4) and an ImageView(v5). For EditText v2 I have imeOptions as android:imeOptions="actionNext" But when I run the app, the keyboard's return does not check to next and I want it to change to next. How do I fix this problem? Also, when user clicks next, I want focus to go to EditText v4. I do I do this? • MS SQL datetime precision problem

  I have a situation where two persons might work on the same order (stored in an MS SQL database) from two different computers. To prevent data loss in the case where one would save his copy of the order first, and then a little later the second would save his copy and overwrite the first, I've added a check against the lastSaved field (datetime) before saving. The code looks roughly like this: private bool orderIsChangedByOtherUser(Order localOrderCopy) { // Look up fresh version of the order from the DB Order databaseOrder = orderService.GetByOrderId(localOrderCopy.Id); if (databaseOrder != null && databaseOrder.LastSaved > localOrderCopy.LastSaved) { return true; } else { return false; } } This works for most of the time, but I have found one small bug. If orderIsChangedByOtherUser returns false, the local copy will have its lastSaved updated to the current time and then be persisted to the database. The value of lastSaved in the local copy and the DB should now be the same. However, if orderIsChangedByOtherUser is run again, it sometimes returns true even though no other user has made changes to the DB. When debugging in Visual Studio, databaseOrder.LastSaved and localOrderCopy.LastSaved appear to have the same value, but when looking closer they some times differ by a few milliseconds. I found this article with a short notice on the millisecond precision for datetime in SQL: Another problem is that SQL Server stores DATETIME with a precision of 3.33 milliseconds (0. 00333 seconds). The solution I could think of for this problem, is to compare the two datetimes and consider them equal if they differ by less than say 10 milliseconds. My question to you is then: are there any better/safer ways to compare two datetime values in MS SQL to see if they are exactly the same?

There are 3 platforms in my solution: Any CPU Win32 Mixed Platforms I never want to "just build the C# ones" or "just build the C++ ones", I always want to build all projects. So the platforms metaphor is meaningless to me, I'll leave it on Mixed Platforms or whatever as long as they all build. Now VS sometimes automatically switches the current platform to Any CPU (I'm not sure when or why). This means that pressing F7 will only try to build the C# projects, which is obviously no good. So I have to switch back to Mixed Platforms and try again. So how to workaround this irritating problem? I have tried 2 ways: In Configuration Manager, remove Any CPU and Win32 platforms. This worked until I added a new project and Visual Studio very kindly added them back in... :/ In Configuration Manager, check all checkboxes for all projects in all configurations in all platforms. This becomes a nightmare to manage with many projects in the solution. Any other ideas?

  We are using MVP (Supervising Controller) for ASP.NET WebForms with 3.5 SP1. What is the preferred way to check the value of a view property that only has the a set operation with RhinoMocks?   Hi, I'm not very elite when it comes to JavaScript, especially the syntax. So I'm trying to learn. And in this process I'm trying to implement a content loader that basically removes all content from a div and inserts content from another div from a different document. I've tried to do this on this site: www.matkalenderen.no - Check the butt ugly link there. See what happens? I've taken the example from this site: http://nettuts.s3.cdn.plus.org/011_jQuerySite/sample/index.html#index But I'm not sure this example actually works the way I think it does. I mean, if the code just wipes out existing content from a div and inserts content from another div, why does the other webpages in this example include doctype and heading etc etc? Wouldn't you just need the div and it's content? Without all the other stuff "around"? Maybe I don't get how this works though. Thought it worked mosly like include really. • When onblur occurs, how can I find out which element focus went *to*?

  Suppose I attach an onblur function to an html input box like this: <input id="myInput" onblur="function() { ... }"></input> Is there a way to get the ID of the element which caused the onblur event to fire (the element which was clicked) inside the function? How? For example, suppose I have a span like this: <span id="mySpan">Hello World</span> If I click the span right after the input element has focus, the input element will lose its focus. How does the function know that it was mySpan that was clicked? PS: If the onclick event of the span would occur before the onblur event of the input element my problem would be solved, because I could set some status value indicating a specific element had been clicked. PPS: The background of this problem is that I want to trigger an Ajax.AutoCompleter control externally (from a clickable element) to show its suggestions, without the suggestions disappearing immediately because of the onblur event on the input element. So I want to check in the OnBlur function if one specific element has been clicked, and if so, ignore the blur event.

• wamp cannot load mysqli extension

  WAMP installed fine, no problems, BUT... When going to phpMyAdmin, I get the error from phpMyAdmin as follows: "Cannot load mysqli extension. Please check your PHP configuration". Also, phpMyAdmin documentation explains this error message as follows: "To connect to a MySQL server, PHP needs a set of MySQL functions called "MySQL extension". This extension may be part of the PHP distribution (compiled-in), otherwise it needs to be loaded dynamically. Its name is probably mysql.so or php_mysql.dll. phpMyAdmin tried to load the extension but failed. Usually, the problem is solved by installing a software package called "PHP-MySQL" or something similar."   Please bear with me: this isn't a language debate or a flame. It's a real request for opinions. Occasionally, I have to help educate a traditional text coder in how to think in LabVIEW (LV). Often during this process, I get to hear about how LV sucks. Rarely is this insight accompanied by rational observations other than "Language X is just so much better!". While this statement is satisfying to them, it doesn't help me understand what is frustrating them. So, for those of you with LabVIEW and text language experience, what specific things about LV drive you nuts? ------ Summaries ------- Thanks for all the answers! Some of the issues are answered in the comments below, some exist on other sites, and some are just genuine problems with LV. In the spirit of the original question, I'm not going to try to answer all of these here: check LAVA or NI's website, and you'll be pleasantly surprised at how many of these things can be overcome.
