• Stumbling Through: Visual Studio 2010 (Part I)

  Ive spent the better part of the last two years doing nothing but K2 workflow development, which until very recently could only be done in Visual Studio 2005 so I am a bit behind the times. I seem to have skipped over using Visual Studio 2008 entirely, and I am now ready to stumble through all that Ive missed. Not that I will abandon my K2 ramblings, but I need to get back to some of the other technologies I am passionate about but havent had the option of working with them on a day-to-day basis as I have with K2 blackpearl. Specifically, I am going to be focusing my efforts on what is new in the Entity Framework and WPF in Visual Studio 2010, though you have to keep in mind that since I have skipped VS 2008, I may be giving VS 2010 credit for things that really have been around for a while (hey, if I havent seen it, it is new to me!). I have the following simple goals in mind for this exercise: Entity Framework Model an inherited class Entity Framework Model a lookup entity WPF Bind a list of entities WPF - on selection of an entity in the bound list, display values of the selected entity WPF For the lookup field, provide a dropdown of potential values to lookup All of these goals must be accomplished using as little code as possible, relying on the features we get out of the box in Visual Studio 2010. This isnt going to be rocket science here, Im not even looking to get or save this data from/to a data source, but I gotta start somewhere and hopefully it will grow into something more interesting. For this exercise, I am going to try to model some fictional data about football players and personnel (maybe turning this into some sort of NFL simulation game if I lose my job and can play with this all day), so Ill start with a Person class that has a name property, and extend that with a Player class to include a Position lookup property. The idea is that a Person can be a Player, Coach or whatever other personnel type may be associated with a football team but well only flesh out the Player aspect of a person for this. So to get started, I fired up Visual Studio 2010 and created a new WPF Application: To this project, I added a new ADO.NET Entity Data Model named PlayerModel (for now, not sure what will be an appropriate name so this may be revisited): I chose for it to be an empty model, as I dont have a database designed for this yet: Using the toolbox, I dragged out an entity for each of the items we identified earlier: Person, Player and Position, and gave them some simple properties (note that I kept the default Id property for each of them): Now to figure out how to link these things together the way I want to first, lets try to tell it that Player extends Person. I see that Inheritance is one of the items in the toolbox, but I cant seem to drag it out anywhere onto the canvas. However, when I right-click an element, I get the option to Add Inheritance to it, which gives us exactly what we want: Ok, now that we have that, how do we tell it that each player has a position? Well, despite association being in the toolbox, I have learned that you cant just drag and drop those elements so I right click Player and select Add -> Association to get the following dialog: I see the option here to Add foreign key properties to my entities Ive read somewhere this this is a new and highly-sought after feature so Ill see what it does. Selecting it includes a PositionId on the Player element for me, which seems pretty database-centric and I would like to see if I can live without it for now given that we also got the Position property out of this association. Ill bring it back into the fold if it ends up being useful later. Here is what we end up with now: Trying to compile this resulted in an error stating that the Player entity cannot have an Id, because the Person element it extends already has a property named Id. Makes sense, so I remove it and compile again. Success, but with a warning but success is a good thing so Ill pretend I didnt see that warning for now. It probably has to do with the fact that my Player entity is now pretty useless as it doesnt have any non-navigation properties. So things seem to match what we are going for, great now what the heck do we do with this? Lets switch gears and see what we get for free dealing with this model from the UI. Lets open up the MainWindow.xaml and see if we can connect to our entities as a data source. Hey, whats this? Have you read my mind, Visual Studio? Our entities are already listed in the Data Sources panel: I do notice, however, that our Player entity is missing. Is this due to that compilation warning? Ill add a bogus property to our player entity just to see if that is the case no, still no love. The warning reads: Error 2062: No mapping specified for instances of the EntitySet and AssociationSet in the EntityContainer PlayerModelContainer. Well if everything worked without any issues, then I wouldnt be stumbling through at all, so lets get to the bottom of this. My good friend google indicates that the warning is due to the model not being tied up to a database. Hmmm, so why dont Players show up in my data sources? A little bit of drill-down shows that they are, in fact, exposed under Positions: Well now that isnt quite what I want. While you could get to players through a position, it shouldnt be that way exclusively. Oh well, I can ignore that for now lets drag Players out onto the canvas after selecting List from the dropdown: Hey, what the heck? I wanted a list not a listview. Get rid of that list view that was just dropped, drop in a listbox and then drop the Players entity into it. That will bind it for us. Of course, there isnt any data to show, which brings us to the really hacky part of all this and that is to stuff some test data into our view source without actually getting it from any data source. To do this through code, we need to grab a reference to the positionsPlayersViewSource resource that was created for us when we dragged out our Players entity. Drop a text box (to show the selected players name) and a combo box (to show the selected players position). Drag the Positions entity from the data sources panel to the combo box to wire it up to the positions view source. Click the text box that was dragged, and find its Text property in the properties pane. There is a little glyph next to it that displays Advanced Properties when hovered over click this and then select Apply Data Binding. In the dialog that appears, we can select the current players name as the value to bind to: Similarly, we can wire up the combo boxs SelectedItem value to the current players position: When the application is executed and we navigate through the various players, we automatically get their name and position bound to the appropriate fields: All of this was accomplished with no code save for loading the test data, and I might add, it was pretty intuitive to do so via the drag and drop of entities straight from the data sources panel. So maybe all of this was old hat to you, but I was very impressed with this experience and I look forward to stumbling through the caveats of doing more complex data modeling and binding in this fashion.   I want to create two reports and submit the report data to database by using two functions defined in a class: Here I have two buttons: "Create ES" and "Create RP". Rightnow, my forms are working fine, I can insert data successfully, but the problem was when I click on submit after filling the form data, the content is hiding and displays the fist div content "cs_content" and again I need to onclick to submit again. Could anyone give a solution for this. • Problem setting up Master-Master Replication in MySQL

  I am attempting to setup Master-Master Replication on two MySQL database servers. I have followed the steps in this guide, but it fails in the middle of Step 4 with SHOW MASTER STATUS; It simply returns an empty set. I get the same 3 errors in both servers' logs.   Can somebody shed some lights on how SQL Server 2005 deals with may request issued by a client using ADO.NET 2.0. Below is the shortend output of SQL Trace. I can see that connection pooling is working (I believe there is only one connection being pooled). What is not clear to me is why we have so many sp_reset_connection calls i.e a series of: Audit Login, SQL:BatchStarting, RPC:Starting and Audit Logout for each loop in for loop below. I can see that there is constant switching between tempdb and master database which leads me to conclude that we lost the context when next connection is created by fetching it from the pool based on ConectionString argument. I can see that every 15ms I can get 100-200 login/logout per second (reported at the same time by Profiler). The after 15ms I have again a series fo 100-200 login/logout per second. I need clarification on how this might affect much complex insert queries in production environment. I use Enterprise Library 2006, the code is compiled with VS 2005 and it is a console application that parses a flat file with 10 of thousand of rows grouping parent-child rows, runs on an application server and runs 2 stored procedure on a remote SQL Server 2005 inserting a parent record, retrieves Identity value and using it calls the second stored procedure 1, 2 or multiple times (sometimes several thousands) inserting child records. The child table has close to 10 million records with 5-10 indexes some of them being covering non-clustered. There is a pretty complex Insert trigger that copies inserted detail record to an archive table. All in all I only have 7 inserts per second which means it can take 2-4 hours for 50 thousand records. When I run Profiler on the test server (that is almost equivalent with production server) I can see that there is about 120ms between Audit Logout and Audit Login trace entries which almost give me chance to insert about 8 records. So my question is if there is some way to improve inserting of records since the company loads 100 thousands of records and does daily planning and has SLA to fulfill client request coming as flat file orders and some big files 10 thousands have to be processed(imported quickly). 4 hours to import 60 thousands should be reduced to 30 minutes. I was thinking to use BatchSize of DataAdapter to send multiple stored procedure calls, SQL Bulk inserts to batch multiple inserts from DataReader or DataTable, SSIS fast load. But I don't know how to properly analyze re-indexing and stats population and maybe this has to take some time to finish. What is worse is that the company uses the biggest table for reporting and other online processing and indexes cannot be dropped. I manage transaction manually by setting a field to a value and do an transactional update changing that value to a new value that other applications are using to get committed rows. Please advise how to approach this problem. For now I am trying to have a staging tables with minimal logging in a separate database and no indexes and I will try to do batched (massive) parent child inserts. I believe Production DB has simple recovery model, but it could be full recovery. If DB user that is being used by my .NET console application has bulkadmin role does it mean its bulk inserts are minimally logged. I understand that when a table has clustered and many non-clustered indexes that inserts are still logged for each row. Connection pooling is working, but with many login/logouts. So with CentOS 5.5 x64, Installed and patched completely. Postfix & Dovecot both installed via base repo. I've fiddled with it for the last six hours, grabbed slightly-older copies of the RPM (ones that matched our production server exactly) to test those, copied configs, searched google, searched server fault, chatted in IRC, banged my head against the table, I've done it all. Surely I'm doing something wrong or forgetting something, can anyone tell me what the elephant in the room is? This stuff is supposed to work.

I also have Windows Defender running and it seems to have daily or semi-daily updates for its signature database but it uses Windows Update utility to get and install these updates. Is there a way to automatically download and install the Windows Defender signature updates but leave the rest of Windows Updates set to manual?

Anytime i try to connect to an oracle database using OCI8. I'm not sure that oci8 is install properly. Can someone provide steps for installation of OCI8 using Mamp Pro?

• Fatal error 9001 on shared SQL Server 2008

  I've asked this same question on StackOverflow, but I might actually have a better chance for an answer here so am posting here as well. I know this question has been asked here before, but none of the suggestions have worked for me. I have an ASP.NET MVC (v. 3) website on a shared server. The website was working fine for a few weeks now, until I started getting a Fatal Error 9001 error straight after login. Because this is a shared server, there are only very limited things I can do with the database (and I don't know that much about databases anyway). The help desk insist that there is nothing wrong with their server. I got various suggestions from them: Upgrading to the business plan because I am out of space (first suggestion) Even though the .mdb file is small, the .ldb can grow very quickly. The .ldb file is probably taking up all the space. I have 100MB available, the database size is 16.5MB. Can the .ldb file take up the remaining space? On querying this with the helpdesk, they admitted that my entire db is only 25MB. There is something wrong with my SQL queries and I should check the website. I'm using EF with linq to SQL. Everything was working fine until now... Can there be something that goes wrong in the queries that causes this sort of error? There is nothing wrong to be seen in the db logs, so this error cannot possibly have happened. I should log it next time it happens and contact again. I found some posts suggesting that restoring a DB backup can get rid of the issue. I do not have a recent backup, and can't take a new one because of a fatal error 9001 occurring. Since this is a shared server I have about 0 authority to execute anything against the DB (think CHECKDB, truncating the log, etc.). So I am at my wits end pretty much. What else can I do/try to get my website moving again?

Now, the toolbox stores a number of images that are retrieved from a database and displayed. For that I use a datatemplate inside the toolbox control. However, when I try to drag and drop the elements, I don't get the image object but the database component. I want to organize my mp3 directories, but any copied file loses its reference from itunes library, thus, when I add it to itunes again, it'll have no rating data. I guess it's possible if I manipulate the itunes xml database, but I really don't want to mess with it "by hand".

  After about 15 minutes, a Norton Ghost 14 backup fails with Error EBAB03F1: The specified network name is no longer available. The source computer is a P4 laptop running Windows XP SP3. The target computer is a Core2 Quad desktop running Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit. It does not help to disable Norton 360 on the source computer or Norton Antivirus 2008 on the target computer. The Event Viewer consistently shows the same two VSS-related errors after Norton Ghost starts but before it fails. It makes no difference if the VSS service is started or stopped. The VSS errors do not appear elsewhere in the event log, only after Ghost starts. The MSS event messages, however, are quite common, appearing throughout the log, and they may have nothing to do with the problem. My idea being that I could create a share on both servers and use a generic name like LocalHost instead of TestServer for the paths. The problem I am having sounds almost exactly like the one described in this Microsoft KB article, except that the error I am getting is intermittent: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/814398 The SQL Server is running under the Local System account (which I don't have authority to change), and the Access 97 .mdb file that the linked server points to is on a Win XP Pro machine on the same LAN as the SQL Server machine, inside of a shared folder with permissions set to "Everyone" and "Full Control". Now, if the linked server connection never worked, it would make more sense that the problem is merely a permissions issue with the Local System account as the KB article above suggests, but the maddening thing is that sometimes the connection works just fine. When it fails, the error message is always the same: Error 7399: OLE DB provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' reported an error. [OLE/DB provider returned message: Unspecified error] OLE DB error trace [OLE/DB Provider 'Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0' IDBInitialize::Initialize returned 0x80004005: ]. Also, not only does the linked server setup occasionally work just fine on this one particular SQL Server, what is supposed to be exactly the same setup on 25 other servers works just fine EVERY TIME! Obviously, something in the non-working setup must not be exactly the same, but I'm having trouble figuring out where to look for the differences since the error message SQL Server returns is so vague. I know our sysadmins have had numerous issues with Active Directory replication across our domain, so my best guess is that there is some sort of odd group policy corruption going on, but I thought I'd ask here to see if I might be overlooking something more straightforward. Any ideas on how to further isolate the error would be greatly appreciated! For the record, here is a list of things I've already tried: Rebooting the SQL Server machine. Fixes the issue temporarily, then the error returns within a minute or two of startup. (This is why I suspect a rogue group policy that is slow to apply fouling things up.) Importing all database objects from the Access 97 mdb into a new, clean mdb file. Makes no difference. Moving the Access 97 mdb file to a local directory on the SQL Server machine instead of accessing it via a share on the Win XP Pro LAN machine. This works, but does not solve the problem because the mdb needs to be on the client machine for performance reasons and the ability to work "stand alone". Plus, the same shared folder access works fine on all other servers / clients on my network. Compared all the SQL Server, Windows Server, etc versions to a known working setup and everything appears to be the same.

• Perfmon: which counter identifies that threads are waiting?

  While load testing an ASP.NET app, we find that the pages are taking 20-30 sec under heavy load. We suspect this is because the pages are waiting for database calls or web services. Is there a particular perfmon counter that can identify this sort of bottleneck on the web servers? CPU, Memory, and Disk are normal. Or must we use a tool other than perfmon to track down this bottleneck?
