• Windows Explorer hangs when opening a specific folder

  When I open a particular folder on my inside a folder on my desktop. This folder was copied via a DVD-ROM from a previous computer. I didn't have any problems with this folder on the other computer. There are 36,316 files and 7,558 folders in this directory and it's 3.30GB. Any ideas why this might be happening?

• Web page change monitoring for Mac OS X

  There is a site that I need to monitor for changes and pop an alarm if the change is over a certain threshold. Ideally it would use Growl to pop the notification but I'm open to alternatives. If there is an application out there that does this for purchase, I'll just buy it. If not, pointers to any Linux / Java / other recompilables that I could just add Growl support to would be very helpful!

• URL Rewrite in htaccess problem

  Am rather new to this world of htaccess redirects.Am trying to force all redirects in my Zend MVC to my https but I get a requested URL not found error on requests that dont go though the index controller Example https://www.example.com/auth/register gives a requested URL /auth/register not found error. However if I remove the https redirect rule it works fine over http. If I adjust the URL to https://www.example.com/index.php/auth/register it works fine. The URL https://www.example.com/index/faq works just fine since it goes through the index controller. • Best second language to learn for a native english speaking programmer?

  I have always wanted to learn a foreign language, but I would like to pick one that can also help me the most in my career. I'm in the US, so it is not necessary for me to learn a second language to influence my career success, however I think knowing one and speaking it fluently could potentially put me in a more interesting career than if I did not. I would like to be able to travel the world, especially if I could have a reason to go one place or another. Which leads me to my question: What is the best second language to learn for a native English speaking programmer? (Especially from the US) Some ideas that come to mind for me are Mandarin, German, Japanese, French... I am looking for experienced opinions though! Thanks.

• Which IP addresses are using remote dekstop?

  We have a server that has an open remote desktop port to the internet (no VPN.) Several people are allowed to log on to the machine remotely. The server runs Windows 7 (desktop OS.) I can find logon times using Event Viewer, but it does not show the IP address of the remote machine. At any rate, manually browsing Event Viewer for all login events would be time consuming, to say the least.) Is a way to find out which IP addresses are using Remote Dekstop ?

  Some sites doesn't work normally, they are open, without css, images and javascript errors... Facebook stucks on static.ak.fbcdn.net Twitter stucks on a1.twimg.com Yahoo stucks on l.yimg.com On firefox I'm receiving Waiting for ...(any of those). I can access facebook only with SSL. Like https://facebook.com I ping them, only receive request timed out. Update: When I ping static.ak.fbcdn.net I refer to a749.g.akamai.net, when I ping this server I get Request timed out.

• Enabling vim file type plugin

  In my .vimrc file I have this line.. filetype plugin indent on and then in ~/.vim/ftplugin/py.vimrc (I've also tried saving it as a .vim file) I've copied and pasted a vimrc file for python standards and have enabled all of the suggested settings in it (uncommented them). When I create and open a test.py file and do something like a tab, it goes 8 spaces instead of 4. Not sure what's going wrong.

  On OS X 10.5 and 10.6 at least, the command to enable all files in Finder only affects Finder Windows -- the "/File /Open" dialogs on applications still show a limited set of files, ignoring nearly all the Unix stuff. Is there a setting which enables ALL file dialogs of ALL types to show ALL files? I really am a big boy and promise not to harm them! :)

  Hi, I am producing some latex beamer slides (but I think it is not a beamer specific question per se). I have the following: \begin{itemize} \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \item Issue3 \end{itemize} Now, I want to have a right curly brace (i.e. '}') behind the items spreading over issue1 and issue2. And of course I want to write something behind that curly brace. In a perfect world I would write something like: \begin{itemize} \left . \item Issue1 \item Issue2 \right \} One and Two are cool \item Issue3 \end{itemize} This does not work because I am not in a math environment and I can not put the whole snippet inside a math environment because itemize would not work in that case.   Somehow I went to open a shortcut and windows couldn't find the target but instead of pointing the shortcut to the exe it pointed the lnk file handler to the exe, so now all my lnk files are trying to be opened by the borderlands game. WTF? I'm guessing I can do it by resetting the .lnk entry in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, but I don't know what to set it to.

• Laptop turning off when fan is spinning hard

  My laptop seems to have reach its lifespan. Its an Acer laptop so I guess that's normal. But I'd like to hear your opinions about this. My laptop is only 2 years old. I haven't heard the fan spinning like crazy not until these past 5 months. What I did: Hoping that its just the applications that I have installed that's consume the life of my laptop from the background. I used PC Decrapifier to uninstall some of the things that I don't need. Reformatted my computer but only the primary partition since my files are on the second partition. Bought a cooling pad. None of these works. I noticed the fan spins so hard when: I have a lot of browser tabs open. Full screen mode a flash video that I'm viewing online. Using VLC to watch encoded videos. There's this thing called minicoder http://sourceforge.net/projects/minicoder/ to reduce the size of videos without affecting much of the quality. I'm suspecting that it needs additional software(to make life easier for the hardware) even though the video is working fine in VLC. VLC consumes about 300,000K and above(as seen from task manager) while watching videos (.mkv). The problem: Laptop suddenly turns off when the fan spins like crazy for about 20 minutes. I'm always checking to see if its already too hot(using my fingers to feel the side of the laptop) but its not so I continued watching and then poof! computer turns off. Laptop won't turn on immediately when I turn it on after it turning off by itself. The light for the power goes on but its turns off immediately. I have to wait for about 10-20 seconds before it boots up without problems. So how do I go about this? Is this just normal for Acer laptops after about 2 years of heavy usage (8-12 hours a day)? My usage is heavy but I normally only have a text-editor(sublime) and browser open(chrome). Here's what I got from HW monitor:

• Shall i learn Assembly Language or C, to Understand how "real programming" works?

  Hello, World.. I'm a web developer mostly working in Ruby and C#.. I wanna learn a low level language so i dont look like an ass infront of my (computer science expert) boss. Ive heard a lot of purist buzz about how assembly language is the only way to learn how computers actually work, but on the other hand C would probably be more useful as a language rather than just for theory. So my question is.. Would Learning C teach me enough computer science theory / low level programming to not look like a common dandy (complete tool)? Thanks! Daniel

  I am revising for the MCTS example and am on a small section regarding Culture-Insensitive comparisons. I get the principle, you don't two items which are the same (i.e dates) but are displayed differently and hence are pragmatically marked as different. However call me stupid but I am finding it hard to see where I can use it is practice, for example why would you have two different date times, in the same code, in which they are different cultures? The only way to do so would be if you manually override the one of the datatypes cultures and why would you do that? Any example of a real-world application of culturally insensitive comparisons? I have the DNS settings in GoDaddy like this: A (Host) Host: '@' Points To: IP MX Record Priority: 0 Host: 'mx' Points To: @ Is there anything in IIS that needs to be done to make mx.domain.com work as a mail server that can be used in other domain names? Additionally, On the firewall, I have the Outbound port 25 open, not sure, should I be opening port 25 on Inbound as well?

• Alternative to Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection for Mac?

  When working from Windows, I prefer to use RoyalTS instead of the default Microsoft RDP client, because it allows me to save multiple connections, the credentials of the connection, etc; as well has having more than 1 connection open at a time. Is there a similar (or any) alternative to the Microsoft RDP client for connecting from OSX to Windows? Aside from VNC, that is; at this point I'm hoping to continue using the RDP protocol.

  Basically, Every morning at 6:00AM I have to do login to remote desktop, open a program, and click on a few things to make reservations before anyone else does. • What would you recommend for a large-scale Java data grid technology: Terracotta, GigaSpaces, Cohere

  I've been reading up on so-called "data grid" solutions for the Java platform including Terracotta, GigaSpaces and Coherence. I was wondering if anyone has real-world experience working any of these tools and could share their experience. I'm also really curious to know what scale of deployment people have worked with: are we talking 2-4 node clusters or have you worked with anything significantly larger than that? I'm attracted to Terracotta because of its "drop in" support for Hibernate and Spring, both of which we use heavily. I also like the idea of how it decorates bytecode based on configuration and doesn't require you to program against a "grid API." I'm not aware of any advantages to tools which use the approach of an explicit API but would love to hear about them if they do in fact exist. :) I've also spent time reading about memcached but am more interested in hearing feedback on these three specific solutions. I would be curious to hear how they measure up against memcached in the event someone has used both.

  I'm currently a network engineer, but find myself wanting to get into the world of development. I took a little bit of Java in college, am 27 years old and have been network engineering for 4 years now. I have a mortgage and student loans so going back to school would be difficult. I'm willing to put in however much hardwork is needed around my full time job to learn, but part of me feels I may need actuall schooling to get down some of the advanced concepts. • Metro + Jetty + OSGi = pain

  I am trying to swap out Sun's HTTPServer for the much better Jetty server, within an OSGi bundle, running on Equinox. I have tried this: System.setProperty("com.sun.net.httpserver.HttpServerProvider","org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider"); but when endpoint.publish(url) is called, and the server is spawned, it complains of a ClassNotFoundException for org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider. However, the correct jars are in the bundle, and indeed in the Activator I can instantiate a org.mortbay.jetty.j2se6.JettyHttpServerProvider. I think that this is a some kind of classpath issue - the spawned server is in a different classpath maybe? I have tried adding the JARs in at the JDK level, but this doesn't make any difference. Can oanyone shed any light how on earth to get this working? P.S. Maybe hideous System.setProperty calls will vanish from the world one day. Hopefully :)
