Need help on how to begin learning website development

OK for the past 10 days I have been trying to figure out where to begin learning website development a dynamic one, So far everyone told me you should start with computer science and I am like What the @#$% how am I suppose to learn computer science without going to school and get a degree but I don't want a degree I just want to learn how to devlope websites. So now I am here and confused about how to put together a website. I get HTML and CSS but still have some problems designing the site now on the other had I am having trouble trying to figure out how php and database mysql is used to put together a website. I have seen videos from lynda.com and still have no Idea after I have watched the video the basic one, one that teach you the Variables, Loops, Strings ext... ok than what happens, how do you build the website with it, that is the question I am real not understand the answer to. Any help will be appreciated.

Can't seem to get Prototype AJAX form validation to work in conjunction with Codeigniter

Is there some kind of trick involved? Here's how I would envision it working: 1) User tries submitting the form 2) Event.observe captures this and sends an AJAX request to a special validation URL (PHP using Codeigniter) 3) If no errors were returned, continue submitting the original form 4) If errors were found, cancel form submission and display Mostly, I can't seem to get a separate AJAX validation request to work as the form continues submitting. I could use Event.stop(event), but have not found a way to re-start the process if no validation errors exist from the validation call. I'd post code, but I have about 15 examples of things I've tried and it would just clutter this question. Any ideas? :-( I didn't think form validation would be this difficult. Many thanks, - Matt

Methods to achieve first, previous, next and last navigation

I'm new to programming and have a question about navigation. What are the various methods that can achieve a "First", "Previous", "Next" and "Last" navigation, as seen in article or comic based sites? (Admittedly the "First" link isn't confusing as it can stay static, but what about the others?) For example, on the 50th page, the links would appropriately lead to the 49th and 51st (if it exists, if not it would not function but would automatically become active when such a page exists. In most examples of this I see urls ending with something like ".php?id=50" but am not certain how it's achieved, with a database? Any help will be very much appreciated, thanks.

Improve performance of website

Hi, I have designed a new web site. I have hosted it online. I want it to be of the best performance and load pages faster. This website is designed in php 5.0+ using codeigniter. This is using mysql as DB. I have images on it. I am using Nitobi grid for displaying set of records on page. The rest is everything normal page controls. As i am not so very experienced with website performance factors i would like to get suggestions and details on factors that can improve performance of website. Please let me know how i can improve my performance. Also please let me know if there are any ways to measure the performance of website and also any websites or tools to help test the performance. Web app - Biometric system connection

Hi, I will be developing an application for a club where they will have visitors use biometric systems(finger print) or magnetic cards to mark their attendance. This application is planned as a web app, made using PHP/MySQL/Javascript. It does a lot of other things as well. What I wanted to find out is how is the interface between Biometric/Megnetic Card systems to a web app done? I've never worked on this and am hoping if someone who has experience with this can throw some light on this as to how this could be accomplished. Any pointers will be appreciated. (I'm afraid there's got to be some form of application installed on a pc that would interface with the hardware and probably makes calls to the web app. But, if there was a way to connect it to the web app directly, then the app would be easy to deploy to any location with minimal installation.) Why doesn't MySQL support millisecond precision?

So I just found the most frustrating bug ever in MySQL. Apparently the TIMESTAMP field, and supporting functions do not support any greater precision than seconds!? So I am using PHP and Doctrine, and I really need those microseconds (I am using the actAs: [Timestampable] property). I found a that I can use a BIGINT field to store the values. But will doctrine add the milliseconds? I think it just assigns NOW() to the field. I am also worried the date manipulation functions (in SQL) sprinkled through the code will break. I also saw something about compiling a UDF extension. This is not an acceptable workaround because I or a future maintainer will upgrade and poof, change gone. Has anyone found a suitable workaround?

Returned JSON is seemingly mixed up when using jQuery Ajax

I've a php script that has the following line: echo json_encode(array('success'=>'true','userid'=>$userid, 'data' => $array)); It returns the following: { "success": "true", "userid": "1", "data": [ { "id": "1", "name": "Trigger", "image": "", "subtitle": "", "description": "", "range1": null, "range2": null, "range3": null }, { "id": "2", "name": "DWS", "image": "", "subtitle": "", "description": "", "range1": null, "range2": null, "range3": null } ] } But when I call a jQuery ajax as below: $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'url', crossDomain: true, data: {name: name}, success: function(success, userid, data) { if (success = true) { document.write(userid); document.write(success); } } }); The userid is 'success'. Umbrella websites with Microsites & Blogs - recommendations

Hi guys, I'm in the process of scoping a solution for an events organisation. Their main website features information about them and blog entries etc, but they hold major events which require microsites (domain.com/event). The microsites all have a different look-and-feel, different nav structure, and custom content-managed components. The one thing that's common across everything is the blog - it will have a category for each event under which users can post. How would you guys implement this? The solution needs to be PHP, and my initial thought was CodeIgniter but if possible I'd like to avoid building the blog functionality - so I guess I could integrate it with EE or Wordpress. If anyone has any other suggestions they would be most appreciated.

Compare range of ip addresses with start and end ip address in MySQL

I have a MySQL table where I store IP ranges. It is setup in the way that I have the start address stored as a long, and the end address (and an id and some other data). Now I have users adding ranges by inputting a start and end ip address, and I would like to check if the new range is not already (partially) in the database. I know I can do a between query, but that doesn't seem to work with 2 different columns, and I also cannot figure out how to pass a range to compare it. Doing it in a loop in PHP is a possibility, but would with a range of e.g. 132.0.0.0-199.0.0.0 be quite a big amount of queries..

empty() behavior

I'm not sure if I should use a redirect

Hi there, I have an affiliate link on my webpage. When you click on the link it follows the href value which is as follows: www.site_name.com/?refer=my_affiliate_id This would be fine, except that the site offers no tracking for the ads, so I can't tell how many clicks I am getting. I could easily implement my own tracking by changing the original link href value to a php script which increments some click stats in a database and then redirects the user to the original page. But I have read some articles that say that using redirects may be seen by google as a sign of 'blackhat' techniques and they might rank me lower, unindex my site or even hurt the site that I'm redirecting too. Does anybody know if this is true, or have any idea of the best way I could go about this? Many thanks in advance Joe

Me and mine friend started working together as partners , we have decided to make Kick-as* website after website. We have the ideas written down like 100's of them (yes we are choosing best and easy among them first). Mine friend do the layout design and arranging things , and mine part is coding and server management. The little problem i am facing is lack of experience in planing a project .What i do is , i just start the code straight away and along with code I make DB , Like when i need a table i make it. I know this is very bad approach for a medium sized project. Here at stackoverflow i saw lots of experienced coders . Need to learn a lot from you guys :) . MySQL or SQL Server

I'm creating an application that I want to run on either MySQL or SQL Server (not both at the same time) I've created two PHP classes DatabaseMySQL and DatabaseSQLSVR and I'd like my application to know which database class to use based on a constant set up at install. define(DB_TYPE, "mysql"); // or "sqlsrv" I'm trying to think of the best way to handle this. My thought is to do an "if else" wherever I instantiate the database: $db = (DB_TYPE == "mysql") ? new DatabaseMySQL : new DatabaseSQLSVR; I know there has to be a better way of doing this though. Suppose I want to add a third database type later; I'll have to go and redo all my code. Yuk!! Any help would be much appreciated. Thank

I'm new to php and PDO ,so i read this response to a similar post- Does PDO really not use prepared statements with mysql? Yes, by default (at least with version I tested) but native mode can be turned on manually. If not, can it be forced to do so By employing PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES setting, the name is pretty self-explanatory. $dbh-setAttribute( PDO::ATTR_EMULATE_PREPARES, false ); should you do that? That's hardest question of them all. Well, I'd say - yes, you should. If you choose PDO as your db driver, there is no point in using it in the emulation mode. by YOUR COMMON SENSE Aren't prepared statements secure from SQL injection, why change if from 'true'-false?? what is native mode??

paypal custom confirmation page

I have a deposit page where people can deposit money on their accounts, but I would like to extend this with other payment methods and also I don't want to have certain information in the form visible to people (those who now how to manipulate form data using firebug). So I want to submit the form to a confirmation page where the data is processed and where new data is added like the paypal e-mail and the IPN link that needs to be send to, and only then redirected to paypal. is there php code I can use to submit the form immediatly once the data is processed? or should this be done in the meta tag or something like that?

When to alter a function vs when to just write a new one...?

/is n00b Through the gift of knowledge and expertise encoded here, I am doing my best to avoid n00b mistakes as I learn the basics of programming. I use functions when I (think I) can in PHP, and keep them somewhat sorted in different includes. The n00b problem I'm running into now is situations where perhaps 4/5th of an existing function is relevant to a new need. Maybe there are a slightly different set of inputs, or an additional calculation or two in the series, or output needs a different format/structure... but the core of the function is still applicable. Is there a good rule of thumb regarding when one should bolt-on crap to an original function and when one should (literally) copy & paste most of it into a new function and tweak to fit the situation? On the one hand I feel bad duping code, on the other I feel bad cluttering up an existing function with stuff not always needed...

Explorer right-click uploader for CMS?

I'm looking for a "right-click upload" application like RightLoad - an application that can upload media files to a remote FTP server from the Windows Explorer's context menu. I want to customize the application to serve as a customized image uploading tool to a PHP-based CMS. The user would upload images and other media files to a defined FTP account (I'm also very open for other methods of transport, as long as they are supported by run-off-the-mill web hosting stacks) that they could then use in the CMS they log in to. For me to be able to do these customizations, the application would have to be Open Source - RightLoad is "only" Freeware. Alternatively, I'm open for closed-source and commercial suggestions as long as they allow "pre-packaged" server settings that can easily be deployed to the user. Does anybody know such a tool compatible with at least the most current versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7)?
