  • What is the effect on record size of reordering columns in PostgreSQL?

    Since Postgres can only add columns at the end of tables, I end up re-ordering by adding new columns at the end of the table, setting them equal to existing columns, and then dropping the original columns. So, what does PostgreSQL do with the memory that's freed by dropped columns? Does it automatically re-use the memory, so a single record consumes the same amount of space as it did before? But that would require a re-write of the whole table, so to avoid that, does it just keep a bunch of blank space around in each record? Thanks! ~S

  • Delay the display of image loaded using jquery + ajax

    I am using the following code : $.ajax({ url: "pgiproxy.php", data: ({ data : $("#formdata").serialize(), mode : "graph"}), success: function(result){ var temp = $('<div/>').html(result); var val = temp.find('center').html(); $('#BFX').html(val); }, error: function(){ $("#error").html("ERROR !!!"); } }); The 'result' from the ajax call to 'pgiproxy.php' is a whole web page (returned as a string), this is then converted to a jQuery object and stored in 'var'. I then extract the data I need (a .gif image) using .find() which is stored in 'val'. This image is then inserted into a #BFX div for display. My problem is every successive time I click my button to update this image it shows the image loading from top to bottom as it is reading it in from the web. Is there a way to only display this image once it has fully loaded so the user doesnt see the image loading and only sees the image change instantly.

    I would like to change the default gateway for the wired ethernet port on my laptop- the DHCP server is giving the wrong one. I would like it to revert to the existing config on a reboot. I would prefer a command line way of doing it - so I can easily repeat the command as needed. Do I need ipconfig or route - both of which confuse me.

  • Silverlight PRISM and 'loose' style files

    Hi, We are looking at starting a new Silverlight project using the PRISM framework (to benefit from modules etc) and I am still a little unclear about the best styling approach. What I'd ideally like is to have editable XAML files (maybe even just 1 for the whole project) containing the application's style so that they can be edited to change the look and feel of the application without having to recompile everything. Is this approach something people use? I guess it would need to load the file in at startup and apply the style which I assume wouldn't be a massive overhead. Just wondering what approaches people use Thanks for your time

  • Open Folder within ClearCase Remote Client using Windows Explorer

    Is there a way to open the folder location of a file from within CCRC? While I know I can open/copy from directly within CCRC, it is often useful to work directly with the file from within Windows Explorer. I am looking for something like "open file location" or "open in windows explorer". The folder within CCRC does not appear to allow opening it directly as the double-mouse-click action just expands the tree listing. The path is listed/copyable within the "ClearCase Details" tab, but I am trying to take my laziness to a whole new level by being able to open the folder with a single click.   • Does anyone know of a vim plugin or script to convert special characters to their corresponding HTML

    I develop websites for corporate clients, so we see the ®, ™, etc. chars a whole lot. Sometimes I paste in huge blocks of copy, which might even contain pretty quotes (“ ”) or other strange characters from word processors. So, my question is this: Does anyone know of a vim plugin or script that can, in one fell swoop, convert all these characters to html entities? I think this covers all the bases of the entities it would be nice to have: http://web.forret.com/tools/charmap.asp So, for the characters above, they would be replaced with &reg;, &trade;, &ldquo;, &rdquo;, etc. I tried the htmlspecialchars vimball (http://www.vim.org/scripts/script.php?script_id=2377), but no dice. It only performs its replacement like the PHP htmlsepcialchars function, replacing html-conflicting characters, and doesn't cover any additional special characters.

    I need to host a JRuby on Rails app on Mongrel. The problem is that I need to support mutual authentication. I know that I could just host it behind a Apache with mod_proxy use mod_ssl to pass the cred or part of the cred as a request header to rails. But I want the whole stack to be Java. Is there a Java application server that can do mod_proxy + ssl kind of configuration without me having to install Apache. Also, we need this to be platform independent. IIS or Apache+OpenSSL is actually not a preferred alternative. Any alternative deployment configurations are also welcome.

Is it possible using the Windows API, to create a textfield that lets me offset characters by exact pixels? if so - how? for example, I would like to place two O letters on top of each other, such that they form something like an 8 ? context is an application for a language where most of the glyphs are written left to right, but sometimes some of the glyphs are stacket on top of each other.     I have a requirement to use a Fund model in my code. It will contain a fund name and fund code. In the interest of reuse I've poked around the package containing the other models used and found an existing Fund model. However the issue here is that, in addition to fund name and code, it also contains an amount. Amount isn't directly relevant in my context. So, do I: 1) Use the existing Fund model as is, ignoring the setters/getters for fund amount. 2) Put a FundDescription interface onto the existing Fund model for accessing only the information I'm interested in. 3) Make a FundDescription base class from which the existing Fund model could now extend 4) Create a whole new seperate model since the two are slightly contextually different

  • How to add ONLY system tray icon to application?

    I am developing an application that will be running behind the scenes in Windows and would like to put an icon in the system tray for troubleshooting purposes (simple way for users to tell if the app is running). There is no other UI for the application, and the icon does not need to have any functionality as of right now. All of the solutions I have found as of yet involve creating a form. I am wondering if there is a way to simply add a class to my current C# code that allows me to control the icon, rather than doing the whole 'make a form, set it to be invisible....' nonsense that seems to be the popular suggestion on the forums. Something along the lines of the way that UI control is done in say, Swing for Java. I would really appreciate any ideas! (Sorry if this is a n00b question...I haven't used C# before...)   • Maven2 junit timeout annotation doesn't work

    We have a bunch of tests in a maven2 project and build with cruisecontrol. However the build regularly hangs, because the annotation of the test with a timeout @Test(timeout = 5000) is ignored. I tried and run maven locally, reproducing the fact, that the timeout is ignored. Is there a way to activate the timeout for the tests again? I currently use a work arround in setting a timeout in cruisecontrol. However this simply means that the whole build is chancelled, and not just the tests that should fail. Remark: It seems in maven 1 there was a property to activate the junit timeout which is missing in maven 2.

I am using popular RadioButtonList style to display the radiobutton from my enum using DataProvider in a Listcontrol. I can get all the radio buttons but the text appear with the radio button is not user friendly.     Hi, image a complete black web page. On this web page is a 100% size white div that fills the whole page. I'd like to rotate this div by -7 degrees (or 7 degrees counter-clock wise). This will result in the black background being visible in triangles on the edges, just like you had placed a piece of paper on a desk and turned it a bit to the left. Actually this can be done with some css and it's working quite well (except for IE). The real problem now is: I'd like to have a normal, non-rotated div element on top of that to display the content in, so that only the background is rotated. Rotating a contained div counterwise doesn't work though, because through the two transformations the text will be blurry in all browsers. How can I realize that? Best would be a solution workiing in current Webkit browsers, FF3.5+ and IE7+. If only IE8+ I could live with that too.

    I want to use Tabview for my whole app. However in certain view, I have more operations than I can fit in the navigator bar. So I thought of using Toolbar but toolbar should be located at the bottom, right? Toolbar looks weird to be on top of the tabview, and hiding tabview for one view doesn't really make sense. I guess I can go with more buttons in the main view, but any other alternatives? What can one use to add more operation(s) to tabview? Thanks

    Hi, I'm trying to draw an image in a view but having problems trying to maintain the scale of the original image. Basically, I have a small view and I would like to show part of the image in the view. The intention then is to perform a translation on the image so that a different part appears in the view. No matter what I try, either the image is down-scaled automatically to fit the view or the whole image is viewable. I've tried playing about with the settings on BitmapDrawable, ImageView and Layout to no avail. Anyone know a good way to achieve this?
