  • Pidgin to pidgin, what protocol to chose?

    Hi I and a friend need to start to use some instant messaging and it seem like pidgin is a nice program to use. However it supports quite a lot of different protocols. So my question is witch to choose? Since both parties can use the same program we don't have to use the same protocol as "all the rest", but can focus on what is best to use. As a side note both parties will be using Ubuntu based computers. Thanks Johan

  • Squid + Dans Guardian (simple configuration)

    I just built a new proxy server and compiled the latest versions of squid and dansguardian. We use basic authentication to select what users are allowed outside of our network. It seems squid is working just fine and accepts my username and password and lets me out. But if i connect to dans guardian, it prompts for username and password and then displays a message saying my username is not allowed to access the internet. Its pulling my username for the error message so i know it knows who i am. The part i get confused on is i thought that part was handled all by squid, and squid is working flawlessly.   • How can I create a graph of Nginx responses by HTTP status code?

    I'm looking to create a graph somewhat similar to this: But instead of graphing requests, graph responses, with a line for each HTTP response code (200 OK, 404 Not Found, 500 Server Error, etc). Creating the graph isn't the issue (use RRDtool, Server Density or something similar), but how can I best retrieve this information from Nginx? Unfortunately, this data isn't available on the page generated by NginxHttpStubStatusModule. If it was, this would be pretty easy.

As far as I know about the best desktop processor out there now is the i7 line. The i7's and xeons are both quad-core processors, what is the main difference in these? I just saw that the mac pro's are using the quad core xeons instead of the i7's

    Is there a way to guarantee redundancy to an SSD using an HDD? Raid 1 is the best choice to guarantee redundancy in HDDs, but SSDs are too expensive to guarantee redundancy via RAID. If I was to couple an SSD with an HDD, could I guarantee redundancy using the HDD as a failover device, and lazily mirroring the data on the HDD? (e.g.: every 5 minutes the data should be synchronized, rather than in real time like with Raid 1).

  • Need to Connect 2 HDMI between Onboard and Add-In GPUs - What's the consequences?

    If i plug a second hdmi cable into my onboard video output (my dedicated add-in only has one hdmi port) will it use my video card or the onboard for that display? Also, what is the difference in quality between HDMI and DVI? I do have a DVI to HDMI adapter and cable that I could use alternatively if the above is not in my best interest. This is a gaming related question as I will be gaming off the two displays, hopefully in the highest of quality.

  • DirectX works for 64-bit but not 32-bit

    I'm trying to play a game (Civilization 5) which was previously working but no longer. I believe I've narrowed it down to a DirectX issue because I get an error running dxdiag.exe in 32 bit mode. My goal (at least I believe) is to get Direct3D Acceleration "Enabled" in dxdiag (as it is in 64 bit dxdiag). A very similar issue is here: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-gaming/direct3d-acceleration-is-not-available-in-windows/4c345e6e-dc68-e011-8dfc-68b599b31bf5?page=1 The proposed answer, which looks very promising, doesn't seem to work for me. Like other users in that thread, HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Direct3D\Drivers does not have a SoftwareOnly key to change. I even tried manually adding it as a string and dword, to no avail. I have a NVIDIA GeForce GT 525M, and before you ask, yes I've tried updating (also uninstalling, reinstalling) my drivers. I've also tried doing the same with DirectX (and Civilization 5 for that matter). Been debugging for some 4+ hours now after a full day of work and I've run out of ideas. I'm hoping somebody knows the solution here! :) Here's what I see when I open dxdiag: DxDiag has detected that there mgiht have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time this program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time? No - Crash Yes - Works, but in Display tab: DirectDraw Acceleration: Disabled Direct3D Acceleration: Not Available AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available If I click "Run 64-bit DxDiag", all three are "Enabled". To determine this, click the Display tab, and then under DirectX Features, check to see whether DirectDraw, Direct3D, and AGP Texture Acceleration appear as Enabled. If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Move the Hardware Acceleration slider to Full.   • Windows Server 2008 - one MAC Address, assign multiple external IP's to VirtualBoxes running as guests on host

    Couldn't find any help @ google or here. The scenario: Windows Server 2008 Std x64 on i7-975, 12 GB RAM. The server is running in a data centre. One hardware NIC - RealTek PCIe GBE - one MAC Address. The data centre provides us 4 static external IP's. The first is assigned to the host by default of course. I have ordered all 4 IP's, the data centre can assign the available IP's to the physical MAC address of the given NIC only. This means one NIC, one MAC Address, 4 IP's. Everything works fine so far. Now, what I would like to have: Installed VirtualBox with 1-3 guests running, each gets it's own external IP assigned. Each of it should be an standalone Win Server 2008. It looks like the easiest way would be to put the guests into an virtual subnet and routing all data coming to the 2nd till 4th external IP through to this guests using there subnet IP's. I have been through the VirtualBox User Manuel regarding networking. What's not working: I can't use bridged networking without anything else, because the IP's are assigned to the one MAC address only. I can't use NAT networking because it does not allow access from outside or the host to the guest. I do not wanna use port forwarding. Host-only networking itself would not allow internet access, by sharing the default internet connection of the host, internet is granted from the guest to the outside but not from outside or the host to the guest. InternalNetworking is not really an option here. What I have tried is to create an additional MS Loopback adapter for a routed subnet, where the Vbox guests are in, now the idea was to NAT the internet connection to the loopback 'subnet'. But I can't ping the gateway from the guests. By using route command in the command shell or RRAS (static route, NAT) I didn't get there as well. Solutions like the following do work for the one way, but not for the way back: For your situation, it might be best to use the Host-Only adapter for ICS. Go to the preferences of VB itself and select network. There you can change the configuration for the interface. Set the IP address to 192.168.0.1, netmask 255.255.255.0. Disable the DHCP server if it isn't already and that's it. Now the Guest should get an IP from Windows itself and be able to get onto the internet, while you can also access the Host. Slowly I'm pretty stucked with this topic. There is a possibility I've just overlooked something or just didn't getting it by trying, especially using RRAS, but it's kinda hard to find useful howto's or something in the web.     I have a simplex scanner with document feeder, and am looking for the best way to scan double-sided notes. It would be useful to be able to scan the same stack twice, once flipped, and have a utility automatically interleave the scanned images. Multi-page PDF export would also be nice.   • How do I access a hard drive from a computer where windows is deleted?

    Here is the current situation: My cousin deleted Windows from his hard drive (yeah, don't ask...). His hard drive still has about 200 GB of files on it that he may want to recover before we format the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7 to it. Is there a way I can create a bootable CD from some utility that will allow me to access the files on the hard drive, and copy it to a flash drive? What's the best utility for that?

    What's the best way to rip a Blu-ray disc to an Xbox 360 compatible format, while preferably maintaining surround sound and as little video encoding as possible? As far as I can tell, the 360 technically supports both AVC and VC-1 (though if at those bit rates is questionable), so I'm kind of hoping that you could do it without actually re-encoding the video at all and, instead, just processing the audio and the re-muxing everything together in a new file.

    I've done some reading and apparently the main obstacle to fast remote profile syncing is that Samba takes a long time to transfer lots of little files like cookies. After reading Roaming Profiles: Best Practices , I plan to use Folder Redirection, but I want my users to be able to login as rapidly as possible, even if it means that their data is still coming in when they reach their desktop. Is there a way to do this with GPO or a third party add-on that can load user profile data faster/speed up the login process for users?
