• Connecting data to a GUI - OOP

- by tau
I have an application with several graphs and tables on it. I worked fast and just made classes like Graph and Table that each contained a request object (pseudo-code): class Graph { private request; public function setDateRange(dateRange) { request.setDateRange(dateRange); } public function refresh() { request.getData(function() { //refresh the display }); } } Upon a GUI event (say, someone changes the date range dropdown), I'd just call the setters on the Graph instance and then refresh it. Well, when I added other GUI elements like tables and whatnot, they all basically had similar methods (setDateRange and other things common to the request). What are some more elegant OOP ways of doing this? The application is very simple and I don't want to over-architect it, but I also don't want to have a bunch of classes with basically the same methods that are just routing to a request object. I also don't want to set up each GUI class as inheriting from the request class, but I'm open to any ideas really.

• Calling this[int index] via reflection

- by tkutter
I try to implement a reflection-based late-bound library to Microsoft Office. The properties and methods of the Offce COM objects are called the following way: Type type = Type.GetTypeFromProgID("Word.Application"); object comObject = Activator.CreateInstance(type); type.InvokeMember(<METHOD NAME>, <BINDING FLAGS>, null, comObject, new object[] { <PARAMS>}); InvokeMember is the only possible way because Type.GetMethod / GetProperty works improperly with the COM objects. Methods and properties can be called using InvokeMember but now I have to solve the following problem: Method in the office-interop wrapper: Excel.Workbooks wb = excel.Workbooks; Excel.Workbook firstWb = wb[0]; respectively foreach(Excel.Workbook w in excel.Workbooks) // doSmth. How can I call the this[int index] operator of Excel.Workbooks via reflection?

• Delegation, is this just opinionated or is there a common pattern?

- by user1446714
If I have a java class containing substantial code and I wish to add extra features, am I right in thinking the delegate class would have the additional features added as methods. Then my original class would create the delegate object and just call the extra functionality via the delegate instance? I am being told by somebody else that my original class should become the delegate and that the class containing the new functionality should contain an instance of the original class, to use as a delegate? This seemed a little backward to me, because there would be far more delegate calls because most of the code is now in the delegate.... I was always under the impression the delegate object would contain the additional new behaviour and an instance of it would be in the original class to inboke the new behaviour from?

• Why does $('#id') return true if id doesn't exist?

- by David
I always wondered why jQuery returns true if I'm trying to find elements by id selector that doesnt exist in the DOM structure. Like this:
one
I know I can use !!$('#two').length since length === 0 if the object is empty, but it seems logical to me that a selector would return the element if found, otherwise null (like the native document.getElementById does). F.ex, this logic can't be done in jQuery: var div = $('#two') || $('

'); Wouldnt it be more logical if the ID selector returned null if not found? anyone?

• Use SQL query to populate property in nHibernate mapping file

- by brainimus
I have an object which contains a property that is the result of an SQL statement. How do I add the SQL statement to my nHibernate mapping file? Example Object: public class Library{ public int BookCount { get; set; } } Example Mapping File: <hibernate-mapping> <class name="Library" table="Libraries"> <property name="BookCount" type="int"> <- This is where I want the SQL query to populate the value. -> </class> </hibernate-mapping> Example SQL Query: SELECT COUNT(*) FROM BOOKS WHERE BOOKS.LIBRARY_ID = LIBRARIES.ID

• Specializing a template on a lambda in C++0x

- by Tony A.
I've written a traits class that lets me extract information about the arguments and type of a function or function object in C++0x (tested with gcc 4.5.0). The general case handles function objects: template <typename F> struct function_traits { template <typename R, typename... A> struct _internal { }; template <typename R, typename... A> struct _internal<R (F::*)(A...)> { // ... }; typedef typename _internal<decltype(&F::operator())>::<<nested types go here>>; }; Then I have a specialization for plain functions at global scope: template <typename R, typename... A> struct function_traits<R (*)(A...)> { // ... }; This works fine, I can pass a function into the template or a function object and it works properly: template <typename F> void foo(F f) { typename function_traits<F>::whatever ...; } int f(int x) { ... } foo(f); What if, instead of passing a function or function object into foo, I want to pass a lambda expression? foo([](int x) { ... }); The problem here is that neither specialization of function_traits<> applies. The C++0x draft says that the type of the expression is a "unique, unnamed, non-union class type". Demangling the result of calling typeid(...).name() on the expression gives me what appears to be gcc's internal naming convention for the lambda, main::{lambda(int)#1}, not something that syntactically represents a C++ typename. In short, is there anything I can put into the template here: template <typename R, typename... A> struct function_traits<????> { ... } that will allow this traits class to accept a lambda expression?

• jQuery multiple class selection

- by morpheous
I am a bit confused with this: I have a page with a set of buttons (i.e. elements with class attribute 'button'. The buttons belong to one of two classes (grp1 and grp2). These are my requirements For buttons with class enabled, when the mouse hovers over them, a 'button-hover' class is added to them (i.e. the element the mouse is hovering over). Otherwise, the hover event is ignored When one of the buttons with class grp2 is clicked on (it has to be 'enabled' first), then I disable (i.e. remove the 'enabled' class for all elements with class 'enabled' (should probably selecting for elements with class 'button' AND 'enabled' - but I am having enough problems as it is, so I need to keep things simple for now). This is what my page looks like:

Demo
<style type="text/css" .button {border: 1px solid gray; color: gray} .enabled {border: 1px solid red; color: red} .button-hover {background-color: blue; }

button 1 button 2 button 3 button 4

Currently, when a button with class 'grp2' is clicked on, the other elements with class 'grp2' have the 'enabled' class removed (works correctly). HOWEVER, I notice that even though the class no longer have a 'enabled' class, SOMEHOW, the hover behaviour is still applied to these elemets (WRONG). Once an element has been 'disabled', I no longer want it to respond to the hover() event. How may I implement this behavior, and what is wrong with the code above (i.e. why is it not working? (I am still learning jQuery)

• Scala methods ending in _=

- by Alexey Romanov
I seem to remember Scala treating methods ending in _= specially, so something like this: object X { var x: Int = 0; def y_=(n : Int) { x = n }} X.y = 1 should call X.y_=(1). However, in 2.8.0 RC1, I get an error message: <console>:6: error: value y is not a member of object X X.y = 1 ^ Interestingly, just trying to call the method without parentheses fails as well: scala> X.y_= 1 <console>:1: error: ';' expected but integer literal found. X.y_= 1 ^ Am I misremembering something which does actually exist or did I just invent it out of whole cloth?

• Changing CSS before pageload with Greasemonkey

- by JP
I need to hide an element on the page using greasemonkey before it loads (so that it's never visible). At the moment I'm @requireing jQuery 1.3.2 which I'm reasonably familiar with, but I'm unsure how it interacts with greasemonkey so I don't know how to pull this off! Many thanks, JP

• How can I get the width/height of a loaded swf's stage in AS2?

- by loopj
I'm using MovieClipLoader to load an external as2 swf file into my as2 flash project, and I'm having trouble getting the original stage size of the loaded swf. When I run the following code: var popup:MovieClip = _root.createEmptyMovieClip("popup", 1); var loader:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader(); var loadHandler:Object = new Object(); loader.addListener(loadHandler); loader.loadClip(url, popup); loadHandler.onLoadInit = function(mc:MovieClip) { trace(mc._width + ", " + mc._height); } I get strange width/height values (mc._width=601.95, mc._height=261.15) when what I actually want is the stage size of the loaded swf file, which in this case I know to be 300px x 250px. Any suggestions appreciated! Thanks

• Is there a way that I can register an event, on a control that inherits from Canvas, that is fired w

- by Justin
I am trying to add horizontal and vertical "Position" attached properties to my canvas control that allow me to set a control's position (e.g. Horizontal: Left, Right, Center). I need a children size changed event handler so that I can adjust the position of an element whose size is changed if it's horizontal or vertical position is Center. Is there a way that I could do this?

• Simple Scala syntax - trying to define "==" operator - what am I missing?

- by Alex R
While experimenting with some stuff on the REPL, I got to a point where I needed something like this: scala class A(x:Int) { println(x); def ==(a:A) : Boolean = { this.x == a.x; } } Just a simple class with an "==" operator. Why doesn't it work??? Here's the result: :10: error: type mismatch; found : A required: ?{val x: ?} Note that implicit conversions are not applicable because they are ambiguous: both method any2ArrowAssoc in object Predef of type [A](x: A)ArrowAssoc[A] and method any2Ensuring in object Predef of type [A](x: A)Ensuring[A] are possible conversion functions from A to ?{val x: ?} class A(x:Int) { println(x); def ==(a:A) : Boolean = { this.x == a.x; } } ^ This is scala 2.8 RC1. Thanks

- by qxxx

• OpenLayers: Get resolution of map in a given projection (4326)

- by David Pfeffer
I'm using OpenLayers to display OpenStreetMap maps. (Though, I'd assume this should be general enough to work for any map product...) I'm displaying some very sophisticated vector overlays, and the amount and resolution of the features I'm returning from the server via GeoJSON to overlay has proven too much for many computers. What I'd like to do now instead is to only send data befitting the resolution of the current zoom. This should be relatively easy to do using the getResolution and calculateBounds methods on the Map object. calculateBounds returns a Bounds object that then can be transformed between the map projection and display projection. How do I transform the resolution into my desired projection (4326 in this case)?

• Empty dict-like collection problem in SQLAlchemy

- by maksymko
I have a mapping in SQLAlchemy that looks like this: t_property_value = sa.Table('property_value', MetaData, autoload = True, autoload_with = engine) orm.mapper(PropertyValue, t_property_value) t_estate = sa.Table('estate', MetaData, autoload = True, autoload_with = engine) orm.mapper(Estate, t_estate, properties = dict( property_hash = orm.relation(PropertyValue, collection_class = column_mapped_collection(t_property_value.c.property_id)) )) Now, everything seems to be fine, when I load the Estate object and it has some relations to PropertyValue objects. However, when it does not, then property_hash attribute is None, instead of being something dict-like, so I can not add new relations like this: estate.property_hash[prop_id] = PropertyValue(...) because I get the "'NoneType' object does not support item assignment" error. So, is there any way to force SQLAlchemy to create proper empty collection?

• Is there any method in Cocoa that helps iterating through all NSColor values(R,G,B only, alpha not t

- by krasnyk
You may ask why do I need it? I have to detect all white objects at the B/W image. I'm coloring each object and taking its rect. In order fill each object with different color I would be very happy to use a function that can for a given color gimme a next one or so. In Qt there is a nice one that is called nextColor or so, returns the integer representing the next color(which can be easily translated to RGB). Does Cocoa have sth like that?

• java memory usage

- by xdevel2000
I know I always post a similar question about array memory usage but now I want post the question more specific. After I read this article: http://www.javamex.com/tutorials/memory/object_memory_usage.shtml I didn't understand some things: the size of a data type is always the same also on different platform (Linux / Windows 32 / 64 bit)??? so an int will be always 32 bit?; when I compute the memory usage I must put also the reference value itself? If I have an object to a class that has an int field its memory will be 12 (object header) + 4 reference + 4 (the int field) + 3 (padding) = 24 bytes??

• Why is my web page left-aligned on iPad?

- by Andrew
I recently built a site and centered it using margin: 0 auto. I also wrapped elements in a .wrapper class with a width set to 960px and then had the parent element extend across the whole browser. When I view the Brands screen on an iPad though, the site is left-aligned and does not extend across the whole window. Any thoughts to why this might be happening, and how to correct it? See below for a screenshot:
