Though it always works in debug mode, but it sometimes fails while running. And the strange thing is that these two pieces of code seems absolutely equal for me.

• When is it safe to do a Response.Redirect() without throwing an exception?

  I have an intermediary class extending System.Web.UI.Page for all of my pages that require authentication. The class mostly does custom authentication handling. When a user with insufficient access attempts to visit a page, I try to redirect the user back to the login page while preventing any further page events from being executed (ie. Page_load). The first solution that came to mind was the default implementation of Response.Redirect. Of course the downside to this is the possibility of ThreadAbortExceptions being thrown. So my question is this: When (if at all) during the page life cycle is it actually safe to execute Response.Redirect() without ThreadAbortException ever being thrown? public class CustomPage : System.Web.UI.Page { protected override void OnInit(EventArgs e) { base.OnInit(e); if (!IsValid()) Response.Redirect("login.aspx", true); } }

• AJAX or a server side framework?

  I am working with a friend on building a web site, in general this web site will be a custom web app along with a very custom social network type of thing.. Currently I have a mock-up site that uses simple PHP with AJAX and JSON and JQUERY and I love how it works, I love the way it all fits together. But for a mock-up I did not implement any of the Social Network design patterns such as a login, rating, groups etc.. This brought me to a higher level of decision making requirement, I need to decide if I want to develop all this functionality by hand or use some kind of a framework. I spent this entire day researching, and it would seem that using Drupal and such frameworks will make the Social Network part easy (overlooking the customization requirement for now..) but will make client side Web App development less so. I found some other frameworks that are more developer friendly (customizable) such as Zend and Symfony etc.. but these seem to take allot of the power from the client and implement it in the server side, to me this seems a waste (and an unjustified performance bottleneck) .. Finally I found Aptana Jaxer framework that seems to think the same way I feel. That said it seems a bit under-developed, I didn't find modules for a social network and the community around it seems thin.. (searching Jaxer in StackOverflow returns few results) So other then making server side DB comm a bit simpler it does not help me greatly.. My requirements are a good facility to develop web apps on while containing all the user centric logic usually used for social networks in advance. What would you recommend? EDIT: OK, lats fine tune this question, after considering this abit further, is there a good down loadable source of a social network site in PHP that I can work around in building my web app? (I really like using JQUERY AJAX JSON etc..)

• Simplest way to extend doctrine for MVC Models

  Im developing my own framework that uses namespaces. Doctrine is already integrated into my auto loading system and im now at the stage where ill be creating the model system for my application Usually i would create a simple model like so: namespace Application\Models; class Users extends \Framework\Models\Database{} which would inherit all the default database model methods, But with Doctrine im still learning how it all works, as its not just a simple DBAL. I need to understand whats the part of doctrine my classes would extend where i can do the following: namespace Application\Models; class Users Extends Doctrine\Something\Table { public $__table_name = "users"; } And thus within the controller i would be able to do the following: public function Display($uid) { $User = $this->Model->Users->findOne(array("id" => (int)$id)); } Anyone help me get my head around this ?

  I have a service exposed as WCF via NServiceBus. Ultimately, I'd like to call to this service from silverlight. My WCF Service Interface looks like this: [ServiceContract] public interface ISettingsService { [OperationContract(Action = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestSettingsMessage_SettingsResponseMessage/Process", ReplyAction = "http://tempuri.org/IWcfServiceOf_RequestSettingsMessage_SettingsResponseMessage/ProcessResponse") ] SettingsResponseMessage FetchSettings(RequestSettingsMessage request); } My NSB WCF service is defined as: public class CoreService : WcfService<RequestSettingsMessage, SettingsResponseMessage> { } When I invoke the FetchSettings method on the service, I get an exception: System.TypeInitializationException: The type initializer for 'NServiceBus.WcfSer vice`2' threw an exception. ---- System.InvalidOperationException: Centerlink.Services.Core.Msg.Settings.SettingsResponseMessage must be an enum representing error codes returned by the server. It seems that the WcfService< class is restricting the return type of a WCF method to be an enum. How can I have my service return something other than an enum? Do I need to create a custom implementation of NServiceBus.WcfService<?

• Setting up separate ctags db's for C/C++ standard libs, boost, and third party libs

  I want to set up separate ctags databases for various libraries in /usr/include/ for use with OmniCppComplete. The idea is to be able to pull in only the libraries needed for a particular project in the target language - C or C++. For example, I'd like to have one database for the standard C libraries, one for system libraries that might be used by either C or C++ programs ( sockets / networking comes to mind ) one for the standard C++ libs / STL / Boost, and then other databases for various third party libraries such as QT or glib. Then I could pull something in simply by typing set tags+= ~/.vim/somelib.tags in vim. I assume that everything related to the C++ stdlib and STL are in the /usr/include/c++ and that Boost is all in /usr/include/boost. Unfortunately it seems that the standard C libs and system libs are just kind of dumped directly into /usr/include/ with a variety of other stuff. How can I get a list of which files and directories belong to which libs? I'm on Ubuntu 8.04.

• Identifying idle state on a windows machine

  I know about the GetLastInputInfo method but that would only give me the duration since last user input - keyboard or mouse. If a user input was last received 10 minutes ago, that wouldn't mean the system has been idle for 10 minutes - scans, downloads, movies - lots of reasons. So how can we identify whether the system is truly idle or not? Does anyone know what Window's definition of "idle" is? Must be a combination of thresholds - like less than 5% cpu util, less than 3% disk util etc. - along with the user input parameter...anyone knows the exact definition?

  I have an array consisting of several objects containing Strings. I am successfully able to display the array by using: <td><p onclick="theMiddle(this)">The Middle</td> As you see from the td tag this is part of a table. Issue is that the browser opens up a new page to display my text.   My understanding is that VMMs such as VMware's ESXi Server maintain shadow page tables to map virtual page addresses of guest operating systems directly to machine (hardware) addresses. I've been told that shadow page tables are then used directly by the processor's paging hardware to allow memory access in the VM to execute without translation overhead. I would like to understand a bit more about how the shadow page table mechanism works in a VMM. Is my high level understanding above correct? What kind of data structures are used in the implementation of shadow page tables? What is the flow of control from the guest operating system all the way to the hardware? How are memory access translations made for a guest operating system before its shadow page table is populated? How is page sharing supported? Short of straight up reading the source code of an open source VMM, what resources can I look into to learn more about hardware virtualization?

  Hi, I am trying to detect the numbers written on a grid and then process them using the iPhone camera. What i have found till yet are some good examples like: http://blog.damiles.com/?p=93 http://cmgresearch.blogspot.com/2010/01/augmented-reality-on-iphone-how-to_01.html Although I am able to draw the numbers on the overlay view to a good extent but still not able to detect what these numbers are. What I don't wanna do is to go through the whole AI process: training the system, providing the system whole set of values and then process them, because this is so much troublesome for me as well for the performance of my application. • SQL Server Service Broker Service Disappearing (Automatically Deleted)?

  I've implemented a messaging system over SQL Server Service Broker. It is working great, with the sole exception that every once in a while (maybe once per week per server) my initiator service just vanishes without a trace. The corresponding queue is still there, but the service is missing. Obviously this causes problems in my system. It's a simple matter to recreate the service by hand, but I'm confused as to what might cause this behavior. I understand that automatic poison message handling causes queues to be disabled, but I don't see anything that indicates services can be disabled or deleted automatically. When this happens, I usually have a large backlog of messages in multiple application queues, but nothing extreme. Total message backlog is around 200,000. Does anyone know what might be happening here?

• How do I get certain code to execute before every single controller action in ASP.NET MVC 2?

  I want to check some things about the state of the session, the user agent, etc, and possibly take action and return a special view BEFORE a controller method gets a chance to execute. For example: Most common: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x does not equal zero, so the Home/Index controller executes like normal. But, sometimes: User requests Home/Index System checks to make sure x != 0. x DOES equal zero. The user must be notified and the requested controller action cannot be allowed to execute. I think this involves the use of ActionFilters. But I have read about them and I don't understand if I can preempt the controller method and return a view before it executes. I am sure I could execute code before the controller method runs, but how do I keep it from running in some instances and return a custom view, or direct to a different controller method?

• Getting a permission error when trying to connect to sql database

  I have a sql server on a dedicated machine, running SQL 2008. I have the IP of the box, a database setup on it. I've built a small script that just does a connection test, and when I run it, I get the following error. Request for the permission of type 'System.Data.SqlClient.SqlClientPermission, System.Data, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed. I've been told by the admin that SQL remote access has been granted for my IP address. Anybody know what's wrong?

• How can I evaluate a deferred Linq statement when debugging?

  I'm debugging in VS2010, and I want to inspect a string value but all I can get the debugger to show me (through watches, hovering, locals, etc.) is: "System.Linq.Enumerable+<TakeIterator>d__3a`1[System.Char]" I don't care if there are side effects from premature evaluation or whatever, I just want to see what the expression would evaluate to if I evaluate it right now at the current breakpoint. How is this done? Also can I change my code in such a way that it evaluates earlier? Not that I care when I'm not debugging... but just wondering. In case it is relevant... (I doubt it.) I'm stuffing a new entity object before saving it to the database... some fields are assigned with LINQ statements, I'm not sure when they get evaluated under the covers of EF. The DB update fails with 'string or binary data would be truncated... So I'm trying to find the too-long field.

Why? What is the difference between value class and ValueType?

  In case of Java, we can get the path separator using System.getProperty("path.separator"); Is there a similar way in Perl? All I want to do is to find a dir, immediate sub directory. Say I am being given two arguments $a and $b; I am splitting the first one based on the path separator and joining it again except the last fragment and comparing with the second argument. The desired result is to intercept this instantiation and perform an operation on the public connection that is opened in the ctor of System.Web.DataAccess.SqlConnectionHolder before letting execution continue.   Hello All, I need to create a process with integrity level high, so that it can do all the administrative tasks. But the created process should run in the current logged in desktop i.e. it should not run in session 0. By default only administrators will log on to the console. The service should launch the process, as service is running in session 0 and system account. Can it any how get the non restricted token and use it in CreateProcessAsUser, so that the process created does have integrity level of high or system. Is it possible? One more thing is i should get the non restricted token with out prompting for user name or password of the logged in user. Thanks
