• Computer is really slow

  I'm not exactly sure when exactly it started happening, but my computer now is extremely slow. Originally, I have been using this computer for all sorts of stuff: Photoshop, web design/development, movies and even some light (Warcraft 3) gaming. I have been running it with Windows XP But now it is very, very slow, and I don't know how, why or when this happened. After I noticed the slowness, I removed Windows XP and installed Windows 7 on it, but it is still very slow. Now watching videos is unbearable at full screen (slow frame rates, audio out of sync) and painful when made smaller. Why would this happen? What would cause this? I am starting to think it is a hardware problem (the CPU has died or something), but I don't even know if that is possible. The PC is running with 1GB of RAM, three hard drives (all up, something like 400 GB) and I think a 1.6GHz processor

• Spanned volumes on new install

  My Windows 7 Release Candidate is about to expire, so I'm going to do a clean install of a retail version. I have two volumes, on four physical drives, as follows: Disk 0: Spanned Volume (D:) Disk 1: Primary Partition, Boot/Windows Install (C:) Disk 2: Spanned Volume (D:) Disk 3: Spanned Volume (D:) If I install Windows to a formatted drive 1, will it still recognize the spanned volume in Disks 0, 2, and 3? The spanned volume is not redundant in any way, so the volume is 1.5TB consisting of three 500GB disks. I don't have the space to do an external backup, and I thought it was impossible to convert a spanned volume back to a basic volume.

• How do I mklink junction + move content from C:\Program Files to D:\Program Files?

  I have a few applications that absolutely refuse to install into anything but C:\Program Files or C:\Program Files(x86). Changing the registry keys for default install folders doesn't seem to provide any satisfaction and so now I'm wondering about throwing a NTFS junction in there to force these pesky applications to cooperate. There are files currently in use within Windows so it's quite likely I am not going to be able to do this within the active OS. Is there some bootable Windows 7 system tools that would allow me to make this happen? Seems I will need the ability to copy files (with permissions!) from one drive to another, as well as make the junction for Windows.

• Making internal website available publicly (Win 2008 Server)

  I have an IIS 7 web site that is running on a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) VMWare on a Windows 2008 Server (64-bit) Host on my local network. My router is a Firebox XEdge and it has port 80 directed to the IP of the server on VMWare. I can reach the web site from inside the network, but I cannot reach the site from outside the network. I have other web sites that are working through the Firebox, and I am confident that it is configured correctly. I suspect that Windows 2008 server is blocking routed or public addresses, but I have shut down the firewall on the Server that is running on VMWare and the AVG Anti-virus to no avail. How can I make my site available publicly.

• Configure TCP/IP to use DHCP and a Static IP Address at the Same Time

  My computer is configured to obtain a IP address automatically using DHCP. It only has one network adapter. How to configure an additional static IP address? I found a tutorial for Windows XP, but the procedure didn't work for Windows 7. Is it possible to configure two IP addresses on Windows 7, one being static e another being dynamic? How? The dynamic address I got now is 10.17.11.162. The static IP is 10.17.30.19. The network mask is the same: 255.255.224.0. Both work independently, but I don't know how to use both at the same time.

• Clicking hyperlinks in Email messages becomes painfully slow

  Running Windows 7 (RC, 64 bit). Suddenly, today, after months without a problem, clicking on links has become extremely slow. I've noticed this in two places. (1) clicking hyperlinks in Outlook email messages, which launches Firefox, takes around a minute. Launching Firefox by itself is instantaneous - I have an SSD drive and a very fast CPU. (2) opening Word documents attached to Outlook email messages also takes a surprisingly long time. The only thing these two might have in common is that they use the DDE mechanism, if I'm not mistaken, to send a DDE open command to the application. Under Windows XP this problem could sometimes be fixed by unchecking the "Use DDE" checkbox in the file type mapping, however, I can't find any equivalent under Windows 7. Scenario: Four identical SATA hard drives plugged into motherboard (no RAID controller here) Configured as single drive in Windows as a spanned volume One of them is starting to fail with error "The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Harddisk3" How do you cross-reference Harddisk3 to the physical SATA connection on the motherboard so you know which drive to replace? I know replacing this drive will trash the spanned array requiring it to be rebuilt anyway so my rough and ready solution is: Delete the spanned partition Create individual partitions on each drive labelled E: F: G: and H: and work out which one is Harddisk3 Power down, remove each disk one at a time, power-up until the drive letter disappears But this seems a rather crude method of identifying the drive. The SATA connectors will be numbered on the motherboard but I appreciate this might not cross-match to what Windows calls them. Thanks, Rob.

• Which Wine DLLs should I *not* overwrite with the real thing?

  I have a legit installation of Windows XP and dual boot with Ubuntu (currently Karmic). WineHQ says it's possible to use DLLs from a real installation of Windows in place of "DLLs that Wine does not currently implement very well". So I'd like to just create softlinks that point to all of the DLLs in my real Windows System32 folder, under the theory that this would help things function better and behave in a less buggy, more native way. But should I go as far as replacing the Wine DLLs with the real ones? If so, are there any DLLs that need to remain the way they are for compatibility with the Linux world? Which ones are safe to replace?

• VirtualBox CPU usage 100% on host

  I have installed VirtualBox 3.1.2 (latest) on my Windows 7 (x64). In the VirtualBox I've installed Windows 7 (x64). I have 4 GB RAM installed. The guest has been assigned a 1536 MB RAM. Sometimes the CPU usage on the host goes 100%. It happens everytime, in a few minutes, after starting the guest. Then it stops responding. Then I have to "power off the machine" from the menu without doing a proper shutdown. It happens with Windows XP as guest too (even when the RAM amount assigned to it was the same). What is the problem?

• Why do all my browsers default to the "Impact" font?

  I've been struggling with a font issue which I hope you can help resolve. A few weeks ago I started seeing "Impact" as the default font on lots of webpages, rendering much of the content illegible. I think this issue began after I installed other fonts, but I'm not sure. The issue occurs on Chrome, IE and Firefox which suggests it is a Windows issue. By the time I tried to revert the changes via System Restore, it was too late. I tried to reset the default font but Windows does not seem to respond to that. When I click "Restore to default font settings" the button greys out but nothing else happens. No dialog box and no change in the issue. I've tried deleting the fonts in my font folder and re-installing them (from backup) but that did not work either. • A synergy alternative that just works?

  I have been using Synergy for a few days now on my Windows 7 desktop (as server) and Macbook (client). Unfortunately, it seems to be buggy - often, the keyboard would stop working on the Mac to the point of forcing me to use the Macbook's keyboard. There are other weird problems as well. Is there a better/proprietary alternative to Synergy? It should support both Windows and Mac. I'd be more than willing to pay for it if it would just work. Edit: How is VNC/TeamViewer supposed to help? I'm not looking to merely access a remote desktop, I only want to share the keyboard/mouse with multiple computers (mac, windows) retaining their own display.

• NTP doesn't sync

  I'm using Meinberg NTP to sync the time in a VPS. The clock refuses to sync - there's a ~30s shift comparing to other servers. Meinberg NTP comes with a status script that checks hte delay\jitter every 10s and it is showing all zeros. Actions I've taken which didn't help: Restarted the NTP service using a script that comes with Meinberg NTP Added port 123 for UDP and TCP as an exception port to Windows Firewall Added Meinberk NTP executables as an exception program to Windows Firewall validated iburst appears after each server listed in the configuration file Restarted the server The OS is a Windows Server Standard SP2 32bit. What did I miss?

• Can't connect to my FTP server, why?

  I have a windows 2008 server running with FTP 7 on IIS 7. I have it configured to connect as it is out of the box, with a particular user (lets say john) with read/write access. When I use my FileZilla client software, I can connect to the server as john just fine. No problems at all. However, when I try to connect using Windows Explorer or using the cmd prompt I get stone walled, saying "Login failed". My client machine is Windows Vista Ultimate. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

• System freezes for 5 seconds when seeking in or skipping to songs and videos

  When I start playing a new video or MP3 or skip to a time when playing them, my system hangs for a couple of seconds. A restart solves this problem, but only for a while. It does not matter which player I use (VLC, Media Player, Winamp, Zoom Player), which media files or if they are located on a network drive or on the local hard drive. Everything else works flawlessly and after the playing has started, there are not problems - until I switch to another file. Additionally, when the Winamp playlist continues to the next song, the system does not hang. When I skip to the next song manually, the system hangs. I've been using Windows XP for years and consider myself a fairly professional windows user, but I have no idea what could cause this. Dual-core 2Ghz, 2GB RAM, Windows XP SP3, Audigy card with kxproject. Worked flawlessly for years. Would be glad if anyone could help.

Ubuntu (13.04+) Mac OSX (10.8+) Windows (7+) What format should the drive be? Would like to avoid buying third party software, here's what I have discerned so far: NTFS - Can't be written to by Mac without buying third party software? ext3 - Windows can't read, third party software in development. Mac has OSXFUSE HFS+ - Buy third party and/or faff around to get working on windows exFAT - Cross platform, but breaks MS patents?

• Remote desktop session ends abruptly with a "protocol error"

  Intermittently we get a problem where a remote desktop session will get disconnected with the error message “Because of a protocol error, this session will be disconnected. Please try connecting to the remote computer again.” We are getting this with one server only which is running Windows Server 2008, connecting with Windows 7 clients. The session itself stays running, you just get disconnected, and you can try and reconnect. Sometimes you get in for a while then it will kick you out. We are connecting from Windows 7 clients. We have tried connecting using Cord on a Mac and this works fine, so it's not like the session itself is corrupted. One problem is that there are some critical applications running under the session (I know, let's not discuss the idiocy of that), so we cannot reset the session in any way during the working day – so any diagnostics must have minimum impact. I need to connect via remote desktop to a Windows XP machine (logging out the current user), do some stuff, and then logout the rdesktop session and having a user X which log in (from the front-end I mean). I try to be clearer: I've some windows XP machines which offers some interactive informations in public places. I need to rdekstop them to do some assistance, and then I'd like to logout and have the main user (the one which offers the service) logged back. I know there's a command for the windows prompt to achieve this, but cannot find it out!

• Keyboard causing freezes

  My problem started on Windows XP: a computer (that was working fine for many years) had a problem, that I can't quite remember (may have been to do with the startup process) - but I solved it by swapping the keyboard with one on another machine. Now for several years the problematic keyboard has been working fine - on my main machine that runs Ubuntu. I also dual boot Windows XP - and have had no problems on either OS. However I recently installed Ubuntu 11.04 Natty (pre-alpha) and found that any keyboard press causes freezes. (All still works fine on Ubuntu 10.10 and 10.04 and Windows XP) Just wondering why I might be experiencing this? Seems strange to me that's its not consistent.

  Hi, Friend of mine broke his Windows (doesn't boot). I will probably have to reinstall OS. I want to mount his hard drive in my OS to beck up some important files. He sad he uses Outlook express, but he Use Vista so I'm not sure it's Vistas Mail Client or Outlook. What files I have to copy to backup mail and adders book from Outlook, Outlook Express and Windows Mail? Is it any good program for doing it automatically (for Linux or Windows)? If there are tools or special procedures for other mail clients (for example Thunderbird) you can also name them to make this question more generic.

• Apply Group Policy to Remote Desktop Services users but not when they log on to their local system

  Running Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 with Remote Desktop Services role. I want to hide the servers drives using a GPO, but not the users local drives when they are logged on to their local system. Using a GPO, I went to "User Configuration - Policies - Administrative Template - Windows Components - Windows Explorer" and enabled "Hide these specified drives in My Computer" and "Prevent access to drives from My Computer" and in both used "Restrict all drives". Then under "Security Filtering" for the GPO, I restricted it to the system running Remote Desktop Services and the specific users who will be using RDS. I then applied the GPO to our domain and it worked a little too well. Not only was I successful in getting the GPO to work for RDS users, but it also affected those same users at their local systems as well. I've tried everything I can think of, but can't figure out how to apply this just to the RDS but not at their local system. What am I missing?

• Reimage several of the same model PC by copying the hard disk

  I have several of the same machine (Dell Precision T3500) that originally came with Windows 7 Pro (there is a Windows 7 Pro OA product key sticker on top of each one). These were initially downgraded to XP by a former IT colleague, but are now back in the pool of unused machines. I am looking to format and install Windows 7 Pro on one of them using the latest official Win7 installer ISO with SP1 and then clone the hard drive to the other machines. The questions then, are: Does this even make sense, or is there a better way to do this considering I'm only doing it to 6 machines? Does this jive with MS licensing (we are the original purchaser of the machines, and thus, presumably, the license holder...but I'm no expert)? Is it possible to apply the individual 25-char product keys to the cloned machines after cloning? How far can I go in the config process (installing corporate standard apps and such) before I have to clone to the other machines considering the licensing/key questions?

• Cannot start eventlog service

  On a windows 2k8R2 DC box the eventlog service wont start. When i try to start the service the machine returns: "Windows could not start the Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 13: The data is invalid." event viewer wont open either. obviously, i dont have an event log for this error. ive already tried clearing the event logs. that didnt do anything. the other DC isnt experiencing this issue.

• OCZ Agility 3 SSD - Incorrect capacity displayed

  Just installed a 60GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD, put Windows, and other various applications on there. All working fine. However, when I look at the drive in Windows 7, it says that I have 1.5GB free, but when I select all folders on the drive and view the properties to see the combined file size it says that the total is 28.9GB. So I'm effectively losing half of my capacity!! Any ideas on what this could be? PC Spec: Windows 7 60GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD Thanks, Chris

• IIS 7 throws 401 responses on application whose physical directory has been shared

  I have an IIS 7, Windows Server 2008 R2 box with a relatively fresh install. I've deployed a .NET 2.0 application using windows autentication to the server, and from the default website, added it as an application. I updated the IIS authentication to enable Windows Authentication. When I went to share out the physical directory for the application so that a developer could deploy updates, the users began to receive 401 errors. I can reliably recreate the issue by sharing out the directory of any newly created application. The IIS user has the necessary read/write access to the directory. What do I need to do to keep web users from receiving 401's while at the same time allowing this developer to have access to the physical directory for deployments? Thanks in advance!

• Can't run .net software on Samsung Omnia Pro B7330

  I've got a Samsung Omnia Pro B7330, and am unable to run any program for .net compact framework on it. My last three Smartphones had been HTC brand, and all the programs I tried are just simple winform apps, which ran on all HTC phones. But not on the Omnia. Whenever I try to start an app, I get an "unexpected error" / "NotSupportedException" at: Microsoft.AGL.Common.MISC.HandleArt() System.Windows.Forms.Control._InitInstalce() System.Windows.Forms.Control..ctor() System.Windows.Forms.Button..ctor() MyApp.InitializeComponents() The proper compact framework 2.0 is already installed in the rom, installing CF 3.5 didn't change anything. Anyone can tell me whats the problem with this phone?
