Access denied to EFS encrypted files after PC joins domain

I'm experiencing strange behavior with Windows Encrypted File System: I have a machine that is in workgroup mode (not joined to a domain) I encrypt an entire directory structure on the machine (basically a folder and subfolders with data files for my application). My application writes and reads files from the encrypted file hierarchy as a local Windows user (let's call the account 'SecureUser'). This works fine I then join the PC to a domain (Let's call it 'TEST') Afterwards, processes running as the local 'SecureUser' account can't read the files it wrote originally when it was off the domain (What is also strange is that the files are listed as "read only" now and I cannot unset this flag via Windows Explorer or the command line, even though it looks like it succeeds) I then 'un-join' the PC from the domain and everything works again Is there something about changing domain membership on a PC that changes the behavior of EFS so that previously encrypted files cannot be read, even by the originating user? I tried adding a exe file to startup folder. But he is loading some 2-3 thing and then my app and I see windows desktop normally. Is it possible to load it directly? It is a windows form application not an cmd.

Seeking easy to use Setup creator with logic and ability to write registry keys

I want to create a Setup to install my application. It as to be able to do the following: ask a question (maybe 2 radio buttons?) and, depending on the reply, copy one of 2 DLLs to the Windows directory and invoke regsvr to register the DLL write some registry keys I would code my own program to do this, but I don't have enough knowledge of the different versions of Windows (XP, Vista, 7, etc) and 32/64 bit, registry layout, or permissions like UAC, etc So, it seems to me that it would be easier to use a Setup generator which has been around for a while and already handles all of this stuff. I went to my favorite site for free stuff and found this page. However, the programs mentioned there are either too simplistic or have too steep a learning curve for me. Can anyone recommend a Goldilocks solution which does what I mentioned in those two bullet points while taking into account all Windows versions, 32/64 bit, non-admin accounts, etc?

How to automate slipstream?

Since years I use slipstreamed Windows installations. This works very well, but preparing them is tedious : 1 - install a Windows with the last slipstreamed version we have (automated install) 2 - check Windowsupdate to see what's new, and take note 3 - download each new update available 4 - go to step 2 until no new update is available 5 - slipstream them into the last version we have (I already automated this step) I'd like a way to automate parts or all of this. Maybe a program able to know which updates are installed (already saw one, I don't remember which, and I know PowerShell can do this)... and able to download them ? Or to get them from local disk ? So the steps become : 1 - install a Windows with the last slipstreamed version we have (automated install) 2 - use Windowsupdate until no new update is available (any way to automate ?) 3 - use the magic program 4 - slipstream

Why can't my FreeBSD 6.1 (vmware player client under Win7) do DNS in Bridged mode.

I have a 64-bit FreeBSD 6.1 client, running under Windows 7 (64-bit) via VMWare player 3.0, with networking set to bridge mode. DHCP goes fine on boot... I get correct adress/gateway/nameserver info... I have good connectivity to the world in that I can ping any host I can name by IP addr, (including both of the nameservers in resolv.conf,) ...but I can't resolve any names. Inside the Windows box, the network interface has VMWare Bridge Protocol enabled, and the windows side of things has full connectivity. dig replies with: ;; connection timed out; no servers could be reached ...even if I use "dig @server_ip_addr" to point it at a pingable, working nameserver If I set VM networking to NAT mode, I can get outbound connectivity (with happy DNS) but, of course, can't do INBOUND connectivity, which I need. Thoughts?

How do I remove Lenovo Veriface from the login screen?

I have a Lenovo laptop which came preloaded with Windows 7. Every time I start the computer and get to the Windows log-in screen (where you enter the user password) I get a message about Veriface software giving me the option to use it. I'd like to disable this. I went over the Program's settings and there is nothing that allows you to disable it from loading with Windows. Also, I thought that it might be a service to disable, but I don't see it in the list of services, nor is it in the list of start-up Processes (either in msconfig or in the registry). I'm considering uninstalling it completely, but since it's a part of the lenovo software pack that came with the computer and I do use some of these software, I'm not sure if uninstalling it might also remove wanted things (and uninstalling and reinstalling if needed seems like a mess). Anybody know if there's an easy way to achieve this?

OS Isolation: Virtualization or Dual-Boot Duplication, a General How To?

I want to isolate my windows 7 operating system and I have looked into virtualization. This should work with Linux, however, I do want to still have a way to run windows 7 securely, but without significant performance loss, thus eliminating virtualization for that. I know that you can dual boot because I currently do so with my XP/Linux system. Is there a way that I can duplicate my windows 7 system so I can select one at bootup? This way I can ensure that each OS is isolated and not worry about performance loss. However, I am having a lot of trouble finding a solid method for OS duplication?! Is this even possible or must I buy two versions of win7 and somehow install them separately? Any information regarding this would be helpful, thanks! Essentially I want, Two instances of win7 (not necessarily simultaneously running) Each are isolated from one another so that a security breach in one doesn't affect the other. There is no performance loss in either from doing so

Sharing a symlinked (`mklink /d`) directory via SMB?

Editing remotely the PHP files on a Centos server

I have a intranet web server (Centos 6, Apache, PHP) to which I would like to give access to a developer. He will connect by remote desktop from Windows 7 to Ubuntu 12.4 and from here by SSH to /var/www/html folder where it has to create and edit the files. This solution was chosen because: - I could not make a remote desktop connection from Windows to Centos - The web developer need some editor for PHP files and is not allowed to install software on Windows 7 machine - it is more a test solution ( we are all learning to use Linux). When the developer is connected from Ubuntu to Centos by SSH (SFTP) he could save the changes only if on Centos the account used to connect has ownership to that folder. Can you please tell how can I give all required rights. I tried different solutions found on Internet but without to much success. Are there other way to connect to Centos server?

External hard disk not showing up as removable media

Windows 7 Pro x64, my external hard drive is a Western Digital Carviar Black. The hard drive is connected via USB (tried all my 2.0 and 3.0 ob my Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD7) but once I initialized it in the "disk management" (or whatever the proper term is; I'm using a German edition of Windows) I have to assign it a manual drive letter. Otherwise it doesn't show up. I'm confused because usually externally connected drives (be it USB sticks or real hard disks) just show up as "Removable media", but this one doesn't. Is this OK/expected? Will there be troubles when I go to another Windows computer? I formatted the drive with quick format and NTFS. I changed the permissions to have read/write for "Everyone" on that drive. thanks

Is there any way to make an external monitor the primary under Boot Camp?

This may be a general problem for all Windows XP portables, I don't know, I don't have a dedicated Windows portable. I'm running a MacBookPro Unibody (so it's using the Nvidia 9600M chip under Windows XP SP2). Is there any way to get my external monitor to be the "main"? Even when I use the Nvidia Control Panel to move the task bar to my external monitor, games still refuse to run on anything other than the internal monitor. (In full screen mode, of course, if it's in a window, I can drag it to the other screen, no problem) I know I'm missing something elementary here.

win7-64sp1: Rename folder (including zip file) error popup

With the install of win7-64sp1 I get a windows explorer popup on any folder rename including .zip files. "Could not find this item" They are referring to the old name. What a bug. If I click "Try Again' the popup goes away, folder is renamed. Lots of posts on the net about this but no fixes. I tried a registry patch (that I shouldn't have) and it did nothing to fix. My experience with Microsoft is that they will never fix this, and want me to buy windows 8. This started happening after the install of sp1. I posted in one of the zillions of ridiculously byzantine and almost useless Microsoft forums but expect no answer there. They'll probably tell me to reinstall windows.

System restore with no mouse or keyboard.

I accidentally installed some USB drivers to my Windows 7 system, they were the wrong ones and now my keyboard and mouse won't work. A system restore would get rid of them, but obviously I can't control my computer to make that happen. Keyboard and mouse still work before windows has loaded, in the BIOS and boot system, so can I do anything from there? I've already tried booting into another OS, accessing my windows filesystem and deleting the Program Files entry, but it didnt work so they must go deeper than that. Or could i launch it from a remote machine? I've got some VNC server insalled so if i could get that running that could work.

Restore open applications, documents, and window state

When working on a project, I generally have a couple of Explorer windows open to relevant folders and a couple of applications (e.g. Eclipse and a form development tool) open to specific project-related documents. There's a lot of value in that context, and I'd like to find a way to save a set of open apps under a project name, then restore that state at a later date. Thus far all of the utilities I've found are virtual desktop products that don't save/restore state. I'm specifically looking for something that will run the applications I had running, open the documents I had open, and position the windows as they were. I'm amazed that such a seemingly simple concept as "Save my workspace state" doesn't seem to be available. I'm on Windows 7. Any suggestions?

Can I move files from a laptop hard drive with a corrupt sector to a USB hard drive?

I have a hard drive that is on its way out and won't boot to Windows 7. The Windows partition takes up the whole disk. I thought I would try to recover some recent files that hadn't been backed up. Assuming the files are recoverable, how can I explore the drive that has the corrupt sector and transfer files to a USB hard drive? If it helps, the laptop is able to see the USB drive when choosing a boot order. Some searching lead me to WinPE 3.0, part of the Windows Automated Install Kit. Is that a method?

Is it possible to have two HDD's, and both be primary?

Here is my configuration: C: - system/Windows XP HDD D: - empty I just added a new hard drive (D) and formatted it and made it a primary HDD. Since then Windows hasn't been able to boot. Is the computer able to have both the system and the new HDD as primary? If not, then that is why Windows isn't booting. If it IS possible, then I have no idea what the problem is. Any help or thoughts would be fantastic! thanks!

How to configure permissions for win2008 task running as Network Service to stop/start a service on different system?

Well... title says it all, actually. We've got a Scheduled Task set up on a windows server 2003 box running as the Network Service, and the batch file it runs will invoke "sc" to stop and then start a service on another windows box, however sc reports: [SC] OpenService FAILED 5: Access is denied. Running the same batch file via the windows explorer has no issues, and my user account is part of the Administrators group so I believe this is why there are no issues when I try it manually. Is this a permissions thing I enable for Network Service on the first server? Or do I enable permissions for Network Service somehow on the target server? This question (http://serverfault.com/questions/19382/why-sc-query-fails-from-one-machine-but-works-from-another) touches on something similar, but I'm looking for enabling the Network Service to access the service via the scheduled task.

Hello, i am using visual C# express 2008. I SOMETIMES get the illegal cross thread operation in my invoke method when i try to run my project. It use the same invoke method in many places but its only at the beginning of another thread that i get the error. Since I worked as integrator on this app, my tasks involved integrating design assets in all screens, and so I had an insider view on all the screens (and that is really a LOT of screens :) Seeing some comments about the app made me understand that most users out there don’t realize how rich the application is, and how many features are available. Windows Azure AppFabric: ServiceBus Queue WPF Sample

The latest version of the AppFabric ServiceBus now has support for queues and topics. Today I will show you a bit about using queues and also talk about some of the best practices in using them. If you are just getting started, you can check out this site for more info on Windows Azure. One of the 1st things I thought if when Azure was announced back when was how we handle fault tolerance. Web sites hosted in Azure are no much of an issue unless they are using SQL Azure and then you must account for potential fault or latency issues. Today I want to talk a bit about ServiceBus and how to handle fault tolerance. And theres stuff like connecting to the servicebus and so on you have to take care of. To demonstrate some of the things you can do, let me walk through this sample WPF app that I am posting for you to download. To start off, the application is going to need things like the servicenamespace, issuer details and so forth to make everything work. To facilitate this I created settings in the wpf app for all of these items. Then I mapped a static class to them and set the values when the program loads like so: StaticElements.ServiceNamespace = Convert.ToString(Properties.Settings.Default["ServiceNamespace"]); StaticElements.IssuerName = Convert.ToString(Properties.Settings.Default["IssuerName"]); StaticElements.IssuerKey = Convert.ToString(Properties.Settings.Default["IssuerKey"]); StaticElements.QueueName = Convert.ToString(Properties.Settings.Default["QueueName"]); Now I can get to each of these elements plus some other common values or instances directly from the StaticElements class. Now, lets look at the application. The application looks like this when it starts: The blue graphic represents the queue we are going to use. The next figure shows the form after items were added and the queue stats were updated . You can see how the queue has grown: To add an item to the queue, click the Add Order button which displays the following dialog: After you fill in the form and press OK, the order is published to the ServiceBus queue and the form closes. The application also allows you to read the queued items by clicking the Process Orders button. As you can see below, the form shows the queued items in a list and the queue has disappeared as its now empty. In real practice we normally would use a Windows Service or some other automated process to subscribe to the queue and pull items from it. I created a class named ServiceBusQueueHelper that has the core queue features we need. There are three public methods: * GetOrCreateQueue – Gets an instance of the queue description if the queue exists. if not, it creates the queue and returns a description instance. * SendMessageToQueue = This method takes an order instance and sends it to the queue. The call to the queue is wrapped in the ExecuteAction method from the Transient Fault Tolerance Framework and handles all the retry logic for the queue send process. * GetOrderFromQueue – Grabs an order from the queue and returns a typed order from the queue. It also marks the message complete so the queue can remove it. Now lets turn to the WPF window code (MainWindow.xaml.cs). The constructor contains the 4 lines shown about to setup the static variables and to perform other initialization tasks. The next few lines setup certain features we need for the ServiceBus: TokenProvider credentials = TokenProvider.CreateSharedSecretTokenProvider(StaticElements.IssuerName, StaticElements.IssuerKey); Uri serviceUri = ServiceBusEnvironment.CreateServiceUri("sb", StaticElements.ServiceNamespace, string.Empty); StaticElements.CurrentNamespaceManager = new NamespaceManager(serviceUri, credentials); StaticElements.CurrentMessagingFactory = MessagingFactory.Create(serviceUri, credentials); The next two lines update the queue name label and also set the timer to 20 seconds. QueueNameLabel.Content = StaticElements.QueueName; _timer.Interval = TimeSpan.FromSeconds(20); Next I call the UpdateQueueStats to initialize the UI for the queue: UpdateQueueStats(); _timer.Tick += new EventHandler(delegate(object s, EventArgs a) { UpdateQueueStats(); }); _timer.Start(); } The UpdateQueueStats method shown below. If you look at the SendQueueMessageController, you can see the SendMessage method that sends an order to the queue. Its pretty simple as it just creates a new CustomerOrderEntity instance,fills it and then passes it to the SendMessageToQueue. As you can see, all of our interaction with the queue is done through the helper class (ServiceBusQueueHelper). Now lets dig into the helper class. First, before you create anything like this, download the Transient Fault Handling Framework. Microsoft provides this free and they also provide the C# source. Theres a great article that shows how to use this framework with ServiceBus. I included the entire ServiceBusQueueHelper class in List 1. Notice the using statements for TransientFaultHandling: using Microsoft.AzureCAT.Samples.TransientFaultHandling; using Microsoft.AzureCAT.Samples.TransientFaultHandling.ServiceBus; The SendMessageToQueue in Listing 1 shows how to use the async send features of ServiceBus with them wrapped in the Transient Fault Handling Framework. It is not much different than plain old ServiceBus calls but it sure makes it easy to have the fault tolerance added almost for free. The GetOrderFromQueue uses the standard synchronous methods to access the queue. The best practices article walks through using the async approach for a receive operation also. Notice that this method makes a call to Receive to get the message then makes a call to GetBody to get a new strongly typed instance of CustomerOrderEntity to return. Windows 8, the biggest struggle….

As always, it’s hard to be original. It’s easy to copy great stuff others have done but to think of something nice that others might have done is not trivial. The number of applications in the Windows 8 Store is growing rappidly. That was to be expected; a lot of developers already have the skills needed to build Win8 apps so all it took was some ideas. And they have ideas. Another factor that helps with the growing number of apps in the store is the availability of the project templates in Visual Studio 2012. When you start a new project you are given a ready to run sample that you can adapt to your needs. All the stuff needed to navigate through the app, to display data, to do semantic zoom, it’s all available. So what do we do? We tweak, change, adapt and modify these samples to fit our application. However, the underlying structure of the app remains the same. Somehow developers can’t seem to break free from the structure that the sample apps give you. Result: all apps looks alike. My tip for the day: take the samples and use them to learn. Don’t use them as a foundation of your app. Make you app different from those others and you’ll find you will have something special. I’m curious to see what you come up with!

Adding an ASP website in IIS7.5 on Windows 7

enter preformatted text hereI'm trying to add an ASP website under IIS 7.5 on Windows 7 and am having no luck so far. This site is just for me to hit locally. I need to make some changes to some of the HTML in some of the ASP files and I just need to be able to test my changes as I make them. I installed IIS and checked the box for ASP. Next, I added an Application Pool which I called ASP and which has "No Managed Code" and "ASP" set. Next, I added the website by right-clicking "Sites" then clicking "Add Web Site...". I gave it a name, set it to use the ASP app pool, pointed it to the path where the ASP code is (I left it at pass-through authentication), and typed in 5555 as the port, so as to not interfere with the default website. The code is sitting on my server and the path simply uses the mapped drive that I always use to access files on that drive array. When I type in http://mysite:5555, I get "could not find mysite:5555". I don't really know if all these settings are correct or what else I should try. What am I missing? Thanks, Jay

Advice for someone moving from Windows / Coldfusion / Java to Linux / Ruby / Rails

Hi all I am thinking of undertaking a serious career move. Currently I work day to day with ColdFusion 9+, and some Java in a Windows environment. My background is Java/JSP etc prior to ColdFusion. I'm considering a move towards Ruby / Rails on Linux as I think it would be a real challenge, keep things fresh and would stand me in good stead for the next few years. There are also more jobs in this area. I would consider myself an experienced web professional. I do TDD and I understand good OO design concepts. I have worked for the past few years on a busy transactional gaming website with all the security and performance challenges that entails. I have also contributed to an open source ColdFusion project recently and I am a active member of the CF community on StackOverflow . In order to maintain my current remuneration (!) etc. I would like to get up to speed on Ruby / Rails and Linux before I go job hunting. The idea is that I can demonstrate enough proficiency in these new skills and combined with my other language / programming / architectural and performance experience I have I'll be a good candidate. I am building a personal website in Rails 3.0 on Ubuntu which I hope will expose me to lots of Rails/Ruby and I am reading a few books. What else can I do? Has anyone made this type of move, and if so would they have any tips apart from what I've mentioned? Is there any areas around Rails/Ruby/Linux that I have to get up to speed with? Any and all tips are appreciated.

Windows expand over 2 monitors in quad-monitor setup

i just installed ubuntu 11.10 with my previous hardware setup: 4 monitors and 2 identical nvidia graphic cards. draging windows around all 4 monitors works nice, but when i maximize a window it expand always over 2 screens. Multithreading in Windows Phone 7 emulator: A bug

Multithreading is supported in Windows Phone 7 Silverlight applications, however the emulator has a bug (which I discovered and was confirmed to me by the dev lead of the emulator team): If you attempt to start a background thread in the MainPage constructor, the thread never starts. The reason is a problem with the emulator UI thread which doesn’t leave any time to the background thread to start. Thankfully there is a workaround (see code below). Also, the bug should be corrected in a future release, so it’s not a big deal, even though it is really confusing when you try to understand why the *%&^$£% thread is not &$%&%$£ starting (that was me in the plane the other day ;) This code does not work: public partial class MainPage : PhoneApplicationPage { public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); SupportedOrientations = SupportedPageOrientation.Portrait | SupportedPageOrientation.Landscape; var counter = 0; ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(o => { while (true) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { textBlockListTitle.Text = (counter++).ToString(); }); } }); } } This code does work: public MainPage() { InitializeComponent(); SupportedOrientations = SupportedPageOrientation.Portrait | SupportedPageOrientation.Landscape; var counter = 0; ThreadPool.QueueUserWorkItem(o => { while (true) { Dispatcher.BeginInvoke(() => { textBlockListTitle.Text = (counter++).ToString(); }); // NOTICE THIS LINE!!!
