• What does a modern, standard Microsoft-based technology stack look like?

  Let's say I asked Microsoft to describe the perfect, modern, Microsoft-based technology stack to power a standard e-commerce web site, which perhaps has a simple 2-tier web/database architecture. What would it be like? Yes, I'm just looking for a list of product / technology names. For example, in the J2EE world, I might describe a stack that includes: J2EE 6 standard JavaServer Faces Glassfish 3 MySQL 5.1.x I'm guessing this stack includes some combination of .NET, SQL Server, ASP.NET, IIS, etc. but I am not familiar with this world. Looking for ideas on the equivalent in Microsoft-land.

  I am trying to write code to read and write the XML but I am facing some errors, Could please someone provide the sample code to read XML in grid and can update/insert data from grid which will be saved in following sample xml file. Sample XML file: I am facing the below exception: The assembly with display name '...XmlSerializers' failed to load in the 'LoadFrom' binding context of the AppDomain with ID 1. The cause of the failure was: System.IO.FileNotFoundException: Could not load file or assembly '.....XmlSerializers, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.

• ExpressionEngine: Why is this {exp:query} tag producing an error?

  Hi. I have this code in place to pull some relation data from the database based on a ID of another weblog entry. The relationship custom field would not work for my situation. I have tested the SQL with MySQL and get no errors. But I get an error when I pull up the page. {exp:query sql="SELECT entry_id,field_id_16,field_id_19 FROM exp_weblog_data WHERE field_id_15='2' AND weblog_id='6'"} Also, I want to populate the “field_id_15” from the url. I have tried using the “segment_*” tag, but nothing. Maybe it is something else. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks, Josh

  Hi everybody, I have a little (maybe the answer could require a book) question about web services and server side programming. But first, a little preamble. Recently we have seen new kind of applications & games using some kind of real-time interaction with a database, or more generally, with other users. I'm talking about shared drawing canvas, games like this , or simple chats, or the Android app "a World of Photo", where in real time you see who is online, to share your photos, etc. Now my question: Are all these apps based on classic TCP client/server architectures or is there a way to make them in a simpler way, like a web platform like LAMP? What I'm asking, in other words is: Can PHP+MySQL (or JSP, or RoR, or any other server language) provide a way to make online users communicate in real time and share data? Is there a way to do that without the ugly and heavy mechanism of temporary tables? Thank you! I hope I've been clear.

  Hey guys, I have a WordPress site for a client. He owns a video store, and I made a site for him to update the list of movies, usually just the "new this week" movies. The Pod has a field where you insert the release date. 2010-04-20 Then there is a Pod page/template combo that calls the movies with a certain release date like this: $date = pods_url_variable('last'); He then just creates a blank WP page with the slug 2010-04-20 So when you open that page, the Pod page/template reads that slug and renders a list of the appropriate movies. My problem: I need these to be searchable. Is this possible. I'm also open to suggestions on other ways to go about making this site work. I need it to be as simple as that. Uploads some movies and creates a new page. Then the rest is done automatically. Please and thank you guys

• Best way to fetch data from a single database table with multiple threads?

  Hi, we have a system where we collect data every second on user activity on multiple web sites. we dump that data into a database X (say MS SQL Server). we now need to fetch data from this single table from daatbase X and insert into database Y (say mySql). we want to fetch time based data from database X through multiple threads so that we fetch as fast as we can. Once fetched and stored in database Y, we will delete data from database X. Are there any best practices on this sort of design? any specific things to take care on table design like sharing or something? Are there any other things that we need to take care to make sure we fetch it as fast as we can from threads running on multiple machines? Thanks in advance! Ravi

• rdlc - phantom page break, what to check?

  I have a RDLC report which has some controls on the first page, which are inside a rectangle and which display ok. Beneath the rectangle, i have a matrix, which spans more than one page both in width and in height. I want the matrix to start rendering on the second page. If I enable "insert break before" on the matrix, there is an extra blank page before the matrix(in print layout), which is my problem. If I reduce the amount of data, so the matrix does not span more than one page in width, there is no blank page, and all is well. I checked the Page and Body sizes, they are ok. Any tips? This has been driving me crazy all day, what can I check? Thx

• What happens when auto_increment on integer column reaches the max_value in databases?

  I am implementing a database application and I will use both JavaDB and MySQL as database. I have an ID column in my tables that has integer as type and I use the databases auto_increment-function for the value. But what happens when I get more than 2 (or 4) billion posts and integer is not enough? Is the integer overflowed and continues or is an exception thrown that I can handle? Yes, I could change to long as datatype, but how do I check when that is needed? And I think there is problem with getting the last_inserted_id()-functions if I use long as datatype for the ID-column.

• Validation of user input or ?????????

  We're letting users search a database from a single text input and I'm having difficulties in filtering some user supplied strings. For example, if the user submits: ????????? lcd SONY (Note the ?'s) I need to cancel the search. I include the base64 encoded version of the above string wrapped up so that its easy run: print(base64_decode("1MfLxc/RwdPHIGxjZCBTT05Z")); I've ignored such inputs before but now (am not sure why) just realised the mysql database query is taking nearly forever to execute so this is now on high priority. Another example to highlight that we are using utf-8 and mb_detect_encoding is not helping much: print(base64_decode("zqDOm8+Fzr3PhM63z4HOuc6/IM+Bzr/Phc+HzyU=")); ????t???? ?????% So: how can I detect/filter these inputs? how is this input being generated?

• T-Sql SPROC - Parse C# Datatable to XML in Database (SQL Server 2005)

  Scenario I've got an application written in C# that needs to dump some data every minute to a database. Because its not me that has written the spec, I have been told to store the data as XML in the SQL Server database and NOT TO USE the "bulk upload" feature. Essentially I just wanted to have a single stored procedure that would take XML (that I would produce from my datatable) and insert it into the database.....and do this every minute. Current Situation I've heard about the use of "Sp_xml_preparedocument" but I'm struggling to understand most of the examples that I've seen (My XML is far narrower than my C Sharp ability). Question I would really appreciate someone either pointing me in the direction of a worthwhile tutorial or helping explain things. EDIT - Using (SQL Server 2005)

• What is a good Visio Enterprise Architect replacement?

  I've been using Visio 2002/2003 Enterprise Architect to do my database schema design visually and then forward-generate the DDL to create the database. I wanted to switch to Visio 2007, but while it does have database diagramming support, it doesn't have the ability to generate DDL. Bummer. I am really disappointed because it seems like Microsoft has completely abandoned this feature. You can't do it in Visual Studio (that I've found). You can sorta do it with SQL Server Management Studio if you insert database diagrams into your database, but any edits to the schema immediately take effect. Has anyone found a good program to do this? I'm hoping to find one that is free and can generate DDL/SQL for SQL Server.

• Can I import sql with php?

  Please bear with me(beginner). I am planning to set up an application where visitors can login and play/mess around with my application. So I want to refresh my php application once a day with a cron job. But I never wrote a cron job script before. I understand that I have to truncate all the tables/data and add the initial data. With phpmyadmin, I can import data. Is there any way I can import sql file after truncate the tables? What is the best way? Do I have to create table and insert all data?   I want the user to be able to type in a fraction like: 1/2 2 1/4 3 And convert it into its corresponding decimal, to be saved in MySQL, that way I can order by it and do other comparisons to it. But I need to be able to convert the decimal back to a fraction when showing to the user so basically i need a function that will convert fraction string to decimal: fraction_to_decimal("2 1/4");// return 2.25 and a function that can convert a decimal to a faction string: decimal_to_fraction(.5); // return "1/2" How can I do this? My problem is that the script takes up monster amounts of memory, and since I'm running this on my MAMP install on my iBook G4, my computer freezes up.   I am trying to write a module that will change a user's permissions once a node form is inserted into the database. I already have a role assigned when a user registers, but i want that role to be changed once they create a 'company' profile in this case which is when they fill out a cck form of 'company_post' type. • NamedParameterJdbcTemplate jconnect decimal issue

  I am using NamedParameterJdbcTemplate to insert data into a table. (Spring 2.5.3/Java 1.6) I am using jconnect driver to connect to sybase jdbc:sybase:Tds:<Server>:<Port>. For some reason the decimal values the decimal part is truncated. With the same code if I use jtds driver (jdbc:jtds:sybase://<Servername>:<Port>) its working fine. I cannot use jtds as jconn is being used by other code. In Java objects, field is defined as double. In database, field is defined as float (numeric with precision does not work). Any help is appreciated.

  here is my mysql and php code layout: -i have 3 tables -tableA stores unique "person" information -tableB stores unique "places" information -tableC stores not unique information about a person and places they have "beenTo". here is how i layed out my form: -one big form to insert into "person" tableA; "beenTo" tableC in the form, a person mulitple selects "places" which get inserted into "beenTo" my question is, when i am editing a "person" how do i display what the user has already selected to appear on my multiple select options drop down menu? my drop down menu at the moment query "places" table and displays it in a multiple select drop down menu. its easier when a person have beenTo one place, the problem arrises when there is more than one "beenTo" places? any ideas. thanks

• WCF Custom WSDL XmlSerializerOperationBehavior

  Hi, I have code that builds a custom WCF wsdl on the fly. In one particular scenario, the WSDL exported should use the XmlSerializerOperationBehavior as the IWsdlExportExtension as opposed to the default DataContractSerializerOperationBehavior IWsdlExportExtension. However, every time I try this from the WSDL generation code, I get a null reference exception from the ExportBody method of the XmlSerializerMessageContractExporter (which is used internally in System.ServiceModel by the XmlSerializerOperationBehavior ExportContract method). I've reflector'd it and I can't see anything obviously wrong. For some reason, .NET also doesn't want to work with source stepping in this scenario... Simply, the most basic way I can reproduce this is var c = ContractDescription.GetContract(typeof(IMyService)); foreach (var op in c.Operations) { op.Behaviors.Remove(typeof(DataContractSerializerOperationBehavior)); op.Behaviors.Insert(0, new XmlSerializerOperationBehavior(op)); } new WsdlExporter().ExportContract(c); // throws NullReferenceException Does anyone have any ideas on this?   I've added a CKEditor instance programmatically to my page in the code-behind of my ASP.NET page: VB.NET: itemEditor = New CkEditor cell.Controls.Add(itemEditor) ... which works fine. I can get the HTML on the postback and do stuff with it. However, I also want to do some client-side stuff with it, specifically take a selected item out of another control, and insert it into the text by handling the onchange event. • TextField - behave like PowerPoint

  I have a Dynamic TextField created with ActionScript (multiline, wordwrap & autosize=true). While running the SWF, if you click into the TextField you get an arrow "move" cursor, then you can double-click to put it into Edit mode to select text. I want it to work like PowerPoint - if you click into the box you'll always get a flashing cursor with the ability to select/insert text, and you can click on the borders to drag, or the corners to resize. I tried adding the focusIn event textField.stage.focus = this.textField but this didn't seem to do anything. When you click into the textField, I basically want it to act as though you followed with a double-click (Edit mode) without actually having to do the double-click. Bonus: and instead of a 2nd double-click returning you to the Move mode (or whatever it's called) I want to select all text. TL;DR: Is there some property of a Dynamic TextField that I can get/set to see if I'm in Edit or Move mode?

• Mock Repository vs. Real Repository w/Mocked Data

  I must be doing something fundamentally wrong. I am implmenting my repositories and then testing them with mocked data. All is well. Now I want to test my domain objects so I point them at mock repositories. But I'm finding that I have to re-implement logic from the 'real' repositories into the mocks, or, create 'helper classes' that encapsulate the logic and interact with the repositories (real or mock), and then I have to test those too. So what am I missing - why implement and test mock repositories when I could use the real ones with mocked data? EDIT: To clarify, by 'mocked data' I do not hit the actual database. I have a 'DB mock layer' I can insert under the real repositories that returns known-data.

• When to use CouchDB vs RDBMS

  I am looking at CouchDB, which has a number of appealing features over relational databases including: intuitive REST/HTTP interface easy replication data stored as documents, rather than normalised tables I appreciate that this is not a mature product so should be adopted with caution, but am wondering whether it is actually a viable replacement for an RDBMS (in spite of the intro page saying otherwise - http://couchdb.apache.org/docs/intro.html). Under what circumstances would CouchDB be a better choice of database than an RDBMS (e.g. MySQL), e.g. in terms of scalability, design + development time, reliability and maintenance. Are there still cases where an RDBMS is still clearly the right choice? Is this an either-or choice, or is a hybrid solution more likely to emerge as best practice?
