php and mysql site design question

I am trying to build a website with mysql and php. This is the first site I have attempted so I want to write a little plan and get some feedback. The site allows users to add some text in a text field as a “comment”. Once the comment has been entered into the site it is added to the database where it can be voted for by other users. When a new comment has been added to the database it needs to create a new page, e.g. www.xxxxx.com/commentname or www.xxxxxx.com/?id=99981. There will be a list of "Comments" in the database along with the number of votes for each comment. The home page will have two functions. 1) Allow users to add a "comment" 2) Display two tables, each with 20 rows containing most "popular comments" and "recent comments" Each comment will generate its one page where the comment will be displayed. Here users can read the comment and Vote for the comment if they wish. Please help me out by explaining how to do the following. -Generate a new page whenever a comment is added to the database -Add a vote to the vote count in the comment database. -Display the top 20 most popular comments as per number of votes.

removing phone number from a document.

Hi, I've got a challenge that I am hoping that the SO community is able to help me with. I trying to parse a lot of html documents in my PHP application to remove personal details, such as names, addresses and phone numbers. I can remove most of these details without too much trouble, however the phone number is a real problem for me. My idea is to take the text from these documents and the use a regex to identify the phone numbers and replace them with another value such as 'xxxx'. I've got 2 regex that I am using one for UK landline numbers and one for UK cell/mobile numbers. However when I try and run them against the text it just returns an empty string. Why might ASP.NET be putting JavaScript in HTML Comment blocks, not CDATA?

We have an ASP.NET 2.0 WebForms app that uses MS Ajax 1.0. It's working fine on all our environments (dev, test, IE6 VMs etc.). However, at the customer site the client side validation is not happening. We're currently trying to eliminate all the various factors and along the way we asked them to get their page source and send it to us, and we found something interesting. In our environment, our page has ASP.NET javascript in CDATA blocks: <script type="text/javascript"> //<![CDATA[ . . . //]]> </script> In their environment, the same code looks like this: <script type="text/javascript">  </script> This may be a red herring, but I'd like to eliminate it as the cause of the validation issues. Does anyone know whether specific configurations/patches/versions of ASP.NET will make it do this?

Jquery Hidden Field in Table

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone knew of a way to access a hidden field (by client id) within a table row using jquery. $("#tblOne").find("tr").click(function() { var worker = $(this).find(":input").val(); }); I find that the above works for a row that has only one input, but i need some help figuring out a way to get the value by the inputs name. Location of Embedly (JQuery-Preview) Results

Embedly/Jquery-Preview has been fantastic. However, I'm trying to change the location of the preview result, and having trouble. Right now, the result appears right below the input field...but I'd rather have it in a separate part of the page. Is there a way to do this? I've tried changing the location of the selector and loading divs, but that hasn't helped. It seems to ignore those divs and put it right below the submit button. Gridview looses ItemTemplate after columns are removed

I'm trying to bind a datatable to a gridview where I've removed some of the autogenerated columns in the code behind. I've got two template columns and it seems that when I alter the gridview in code behind and remove the non-templated columns that the templates loose the controls that are in them. Using the following as a sample, "Header A" will continue to be visible but "Header B" will dissapear after removing any columsn that are located at index 2 and above. I'm creating columns in my codebehind for the grid as a part of a reporting tool. If I don't remove the columns then there doesn't seem to be an issue. <asp:GridView ID="DataGrid1" runat="server" AutoGenerateColumns="false" AllowPaging="True" PageSize="10" GridLines="Horizontal"> <Columns> <asp:TemplateField HeaderText="Header A" > <ItemTemplate > Text A </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> <asp:TemplateField> <HeaderTemplate> Header B </HeaderTemplate> <ItemTemplate> Text B </ItemTemplate> </asp:TemplateField> </Columns> </asp:GridView> For i = 2 To DataGrid1.Columns.Count - 1 DataGrid1.Columns.RemoveAt(2) Next EDIT So from what I've read this seems to be a problem that occurs when the grid is altered. Does anyone know of a good workaround to re-initialize the template columns or set them up again so that when the non-template columns are removed that hte templates don't get removed as well?

Submit to open up a popup window and carry through input data

Hi, I have a input box on one page that on submit opens a new page with a longer form and the first field is populated with what was entered from the previous pages input box. So on page 1 there is this code: <form action="sign-up.php"> <input type="text" name="email" value="sign up for email" onFocus="clearText(this)" onBlur="clearText(this)" style="float: left;"> <input value='Submit' /> </form> Then on the sign-up page the receiving form grabs the string out of the url // I would like to keep all of this functionality but it have it occur in a popup. I added this function to the submit: function myPopup() { window.open( "sign-up.php", "myWindow", "status = 1, height = 300, width = 300, resizable = 0" ) and the form becomes <form> <input type="text" name="email" value="sign up for email" onFocus="clearText(this)" onBlur="clearText(this)" style="float: left;"> <input onClick="myPopup()" value='Submit' /> </form> But it no longer appends the input data to the url string. Anyone have any ideas on how I can accomplish this?

How do you keep application logic separate from UI when UI components have built-in functionality?

I know it's important to keep user interface code separated from domain code--the application is easier to understand, maintain, change, and (sometimes) isolate bugs. But here's my mental block ... Delphi comes with components with methods that do what I want, e.g., a RichText Memo component lets me work with rich text. Other components, like TMS's string grid not only do what I want, but I paid extra for the functionality. These features put the R in RAD. It seems illogical to write my own classes to do things somebody else has already done for me. It's reinventing the wheel [ever tried working directly with rich text? :-) ] But if I use the functionality built into components like these, then I will end up with lots of intermingled UI and domain code--I'll have a form with most of my code built into its event handlers. How do you deal with this issue? ... Or, if I want to continue using the code others have already written for me, how would you suggest I deal with the issue?

How do I get a less than in a javascript for loop in XSL to work?

I am using CDATA to escape the script but in IE8's debugger I still get this message: "Expected ')'" in the for loop conditions. I am assuming it still thinks that the ; in the < generated by CDATA is ending the loop conditions. How to convert string with double high/wide characters to normal string [VC++6]

My application typically recieves a string in the following format: " Item $5.69 " Some contants I always expect: - the LENGHT always 20 characters - the start index of the text always [5] - and most importantly the index of the DECIMAL for the price always [14] In order to identify this string correctly I validate all the expected contants listed above .... Some of my clients have now started sending the string with Doube-High / Double-Wide values (pair of characters which represent a single readable character) similar to the following: " Item $x80x90.x81x91x82x92 " For testing I simply scan the string character-by-character, compare char[i] and char[i+1] and replace these pairs with their corresponding single character when a match is found (works fine) as follows: [Code] for (int i=0; i < sData.length(); i++) { char ch = sData[i] & 0xFF; char ch2 = sData[i+1] & 0xFF; if (ch == '\x80' && ch2 == '\x90') zData.replace("\x80\x90", "0"); else if (ch == '\x81' && ch2 == '\x91') zData.replace("\x81\x91", "1"); else if (ch == '\x82' && ch2 == '\x92') zData.replace("\x82\x92", "2"); ... ... ... } [/Code] But the result is something like this: " Item $5.69 " Notice how this no longer matches my expectation: the lenght is now 17 (instead of 20) due to the 3 conversions and the decimal is now at index 13 (instead of 14) due to the conversion of the "5" before the decimal point. Ideally I would like to convert the string to a normal readable format keeping the constants (length, index of text, index of decimal) at the same place (so the rest of my application is re-usable) ... or any other suggestion (I'm pretty much stuck with this)... Is there a STANDARD way of dealing with these type of characters? Any help would be greatly appreciated, I've been stuck on this for a while now ... Thanks,

How to use custom UITableViewCell from Interface Builder?

I want to be able to design my own UITableViewCell in IB. But I keep getting a null ref exception when trying to access the label I defined in IB. Here's what I'm doing: In Interface Builder: I removed the "View" and added a UITableViewCell instead. Changed the class of the UITableViewCell to "TestCellView". Added a UILabel to the cell. Added an outlet "oLblText" to TestCellView and connected the UILabel to it. Changed the identifier of the class to "TestCellView". Titanium TableViewRow classname with custom rows

I would like to know in what way the 'className' property of a Ti.UI.TableViewRow helps when creating custom rows. For example, I populate a tableview with custom rows in the following way: function populateTableView(tableView, data) { var rows = []; var row; var title, image; var i; for (i = 0; i < data.length; i++) { title = Ti.UI.createLabel({ text : data[i].title, width : 100, height: 30, top: 5, left: 25 }); image = Ti.UI.createImage({ image : 'some_image.png', width: 30, height: 30, top: 5, left: 5 }); /* and, like, 5+ more views or whatever */ row = Ti.UI.createTableViewRow(); row.add(titleLabel); row.add(image); rows.push(row); } tableView.setData(rows); } Of course, this example of a "custom" row is easily created using the standard title and image properties of the TableViewRow, but that isn't the point. How is the allocation of new labels, image views and other child views of a table view prevented in favour of their reuse? I know in iOS this is achieved by using the method -[UITableView dequeueReusableCellWithIdentifier:] to fetch a row object from a 'reservoir' (so 'className' is 'identifier' here) that isn't currently being used for displaying data, but already has the needed child views laid out correctly in it, thus only requiring to update the data contained within (text, image data, etc). As this system is so unbelievably simple, I have a lot of trouble believing the method employed by the Titanium API does not support this. After reading through the API and searching the web, I do however suspect this is the case. The 'className' property is recommended as an easy way to make table views more efficient in Titanium, but its relation to custom table view rows is not explained in any way. If anyone could clarify this matter for me, I would be very grateful.

Continue gif animation after escape is pressed

Firefox (and other browsers i believe) stop gif animation when you click the Stop button or invoke it via the Escape key. I have a text input that on change makes ajax requests to update other elements. As part of this ajaxyness i have an animated gif to show feedback. I also trap the escape key press in this input so as to clear the text field for better UX. My problem is after the escape key is pressed once, none of the ajax gifs animate anymore until the page is refreshed. Does anyone know a workaround? Stuff i've tried: I tried the e.stopPropagation(); and e.cancelBubble = true; in the function handling the e.keyCode == 27 and that didn't seem to work. I suspect that this stops trigging more js events and the browser catches the escape irrespective of js activity. I have the gif showing/hiding via adding/removing a css class so it's difficult to apply the "change gif url to reset" workaround. I dont even know if this works anyway - didn't test it. But it seems difficult. If anyone knows that this works and knows of an easy way to apply the hack with background-image: url(../images/ajax-loader_dotcirclel13x13.gif); css then please let me know.

CSS style submit like href tag

Hi all, I have a button class that I wrote in CSS. It essentially displays block, adds some styles, etc. Whenever I add the class to a tags, it works fine - the a tag spans the entire width of its container like display:block should do... However, when I add the button class to an input button, Chrome, Safari, and Firefox all add a margin-right: 3px... I've used the DOM inspector in both Chrome and Safari and NO WHERE should it be adding a extra 3px padding. I tried adding margin: 0 !important; and/or margin-right: 0 !important to my button class in my CSS, but the browser STILL renders a 3px right margin! Send SOAP XML via curl, PHP

Hi. This has been bugging me for days, i'm trying to send a SOAP post via curl but i just keep getting a 'couldn't connect to host' error but i really cant see how. I have an asp version which works fine with the same url and data, i think it's just a php/curl thing...? Django URL Conf Returns Incorrect "Current URL"

I have a django app that is mostly done, and the URLs work perfectly when I run it with the manage.py runserver command. However, I've recently tried to get it running via lighttpd, and many links have stopped working. For example: http://mysite.com/races/32 should work, but instead throws this error message. The request URL is accurate, but the last line (which displays the current URL) is giving 32 instead of races/32 as expected. Facebook Connect Login redirecting in Chrome and Safari

I am having a problem with Facebook Connect that I can't seem to get my head around. A user clicks on the fb-login button, the pop up appears and they authenticate, the pop up closes and the on-login function is called. This happens in IE and Firefox as is expected. However in Chrome and Safari, the pop up redirects to the canvas url and doesn't close. Also the on-login function isn't called. I have googled and it seems to be something to do with the xd-receiver.htm file, however it seems weird that it is working in IE and Firefox but not Chrome or Safari. Any ideas? EDIT: After a bit more playing around it turned out that I didn't have my base domain set in Facebook settings. Why it works in some browsers and not others beats me, however it works now. Moving Multiple Divs With Same Class Inside Parent

So, My website is hosted on enjin.com and when you give users a tag with an image it appears on the forums under their name, however it's a vertical list with the tag names. I want to organize it so all of the tag images appear on one line and all of the tag names appear on a horizontal list below it. They use div tags somewhat like this <div class="tag"> <div class="tag-image"></div>  <div class="tag-text">Tag Name</div>  </div> They then pretty much repeat this for every tag. Somewhat the same thing is used for forum posts too. So, I want to move all the tag-image divs together on a single line and all of the tag-text divs down and give each it's own line. I only want to move them within their parent element (to avoid images/tags from one forum user from going to another). I know how to append things with jquery and have googled how to move elements around, but I'm afraid that they're all going to end up together under another user's avatar.

Avoid an "out of memory error" in Java(eclipse), when using large data structure?

OK, so I am writing a program that unfortunately needs to use a huge data structure to complete its work, but it is failing with a "out of memory error" during its initialization. While I understand entirely what that means and why it is a problem, I am having trouble overcoming it, since my program needs to use this large structure and I don't know any other way to store it. The program first indexes a large corpus of text files that I provide. This works fine. Then it uses this index to initialize a large 2D array. This array will have nXn entries, where "n" is the number of unique words in the corpus of text. For the relatively small chunk I am testing it on(about 60 files) it needs to make approximately 30,000x30,000 entries. this will probably be bigger once I run it on my full intended corpus too. It consistently fails every time, after it indexes, while it is initializing the data structure(to be worked on later). Things I have done include: revamp my code to use a primitive "int[]" instead of a "TreeMap" eliminate redundant structures, etc... Also, I have run eclipse with "eclipse -vmargs -Xmx2g" to max out my allocated memory I am fairly confident this is not going to be a simple line of code solution, but is most likely going to require a very new approach. I am looking for what that approach is, any ideas? Thanks, B.

How are you supposed to layout a page in VS2010 without using tables?

I have been using .NET since beta and HTML since the days of HotDog pro & notepad, using table layout of course. I am FINALLY ready to use only div, li, CSS for the layout, but my question is, what is the proper way to layout pages in VS2010? When i use table layout its simple and i can visually see what im creating and where the elements are, such as the sample below - how should I do this using div's, etc in VS2010? <table width="300" border="0" cellpadding="5"> <tr> <td><img src="http://assets.devx.com/MS_Azure/azuremcau.jpg" alt="blah" width="70" height="70" /></td> <td><h2>This is some text to the right of the picture...</h2></td> </tr> <tr> <td colspan="2">Here some text underneath</td> </tr> </table>
