• OData / WCF Data Service - HTTP 500 Error

  I have created an OData/WCF service using Visual Studio 2010 on Windows XP SP3 with all current patches installed. When I click on "view in browser", the service opens and I see the 3 tables from my EF model. However, when I add a table name ("Commands" in this case) to the end of the query string, rather than seeing the data from the table, I get an HTTP 500 error. (This error (HTTP 500 Internal Server Error) means that the website you are visiting had a server problem which prevented the webpage from displaying.). I have not only followed the examples from 2 sites, but have also tried running the sample application that the blog poster sent me (that works on his machine), and still am not having any luck. • Part of my layout goes upward with keyboard

• Should UTF-16 be considered harmful?

  I'm going to ask what is probably quite a controversial question: "Should one of the most popular encodings, UTF-16, be considered harmful?" Why do I ask this question? How many programmers are aware of the fact that UTF-16 is actually a variable length encoding? By this I mean that there are code points that, represented as surrogate pairs, take more then one element. I know; lots of applications, frameworks and APIs use UTF-16, such as Java's String, C#'s String, Win32 APIs, Qt GUI libraries, the ICU Unicode library, etc. However, with all of that, there are lots of basic bugs in the processing of characters out of BMP (characters that should be encoded using two UTF-16 elements). For example, try to edit one of these characters: 𝄞 𝕥 𝟶 𠂊 You may miss some, depending on what fonts you have installed. These characters are all outside of the BMP (Basic Multilingual Plane). If you cannot see these characters, you can also try looking at them in the Unicode Character reference. For example, try to create file names in Windows that include these characters; try to delete these characters with a "backspace" to see how they behave in different applications that use UTF-16. I did some tests and the results are quite bad: Opera has problem with editing them Notepad can't deal with them correctly (delete for example) File names editing in Window dialogs in broken All QT3 applications can't deal with them. StackOverflow seems to remove these characters if edited directly in as Unicode characters, and only seems to allow them as HTML Unicode escapes. So... This was very simple test. Do you think that UTF-16 should be considered harmful?

• persistence.xml ignores Hibernate and chooses DataNucleus

  Hi, I'm toying around with GWT (dunno if this matters) and Hibernate.   I'm writing some Javascript code that generates an XML document in the client (via Google Earth plugin). I'd like the user to be able to click a button on the page and be prompted to save that XML to a new file. If I were generating the XML server-side this would be easy, just make the button open the link. But the XML is generated client-side. I've come up with a couple of hacks that half-work, inspired in part by this StackOverflow question. But neither completely work. I'd like this to work in today's browsers, ideally Firefox, MSIE 8, and Chrome.

  I've created a local Apache Derby database in Netbeans, but am having problems when I try and autogenerate the POJO files, using the "Hibernate Reverse Engineering Wizard". • Silverlight DataGrid not stretching to accommodate all items in data source?

  I have a relative layout for Camera preview with some overlay features. • Beginner video capture and processing/Camera selection

  I'll soon be undertaking a research project in real-time event recognition but have no experience with the programming aspect of video capture (I'm an upperclassman undergraduate in computer engineering). I want to start off on the right foot so advice from anyone with experience would be great. The ultimate goal is to track events such as a person standing up/sitting down, entering/leaving a room, possibly even shrugging/slumping in posture, etc. from a security camera-like vantage point. First of all, which cameras/companies would you recommend? I'm looking to spend ~$100, more if necessary but not much. Great resolution isn't a must, but is desirable if affordable. What about IP network cameras vs. a USB type webcam? Webcams are less expensive, but IP cameras seem like they'd be much less work to deal with in software. What features should I look for in the camera? Once I've selected a camera, what does converting its output to a series of RGB bitmaps entail? I've never dealt with video encoding/decoding so a starting point or a tutorial that will guide me up to this point would be great if anyone has suggestions. Finally, what is the best (least complicated/most efficient) way to display video from the camera plus my own superimposed images (boxes around events in progress, for instance) in a GUI application? I can work on any operating system in any language. I have some experience with win32 GUIs and Java GUIs. The focus of the project is on the algorithm and so I'm trying to get the video capture/display portion of the app done cleanly and quickly. Thanks for any responses!!

• Android ListView appears empty, but contains objects

  I'm having a really odd problem with my android listview. The listview is inside of a fragment, everything's compiling and I'm no longer getting a nullpointer error, but the listview is appearing empty. Even though it's appearing empty, the log is stating that the listview has 385 objects. I can't figure out why it's empty. I do get a blue fragment, and the listview is populated. Any ideas? • Wrapping mailmessage headers in .net for Sendgrid

  Am using SendGrid for some email notifications, specifically utilising their SMTP API's. While they have PHP examples, c# is not so helpful. Essentially, a json string is built that contains the to email addresses, and other custom filters etc, which is then added to a MailMessage header to send. // json string example {"to":["[email protected]", [email protected]", "", ""],"sub":{"<name>":["Name1", Name2"]}} MailMessage m = new MailMessage("[email protected]", "[email protected]"); m.Headers.Add("X-SMTPAPI", jsonString); The problem I am having is that for some MTA's, headers can only be 1000 characters long, and also quoted-principle encoding required only 76 character per line. In their php example, they are splitting the string and adding a linebreak (\n) every 72 characters. While I am doing this in .NET, I am receiving a invalid character exception. After some digging, it seems that pre-.NET4.0 Beta2 MailMessage will not process CLLR characters. Sengrid support is not proving helpful, and looking at ways to make this work?

• Why are these divs not aligned and space between?

  Why isnt everything aligned? No yellow should be visible and no orange should be visible except for the right side and bottom left where theres space for another image. • Matlab crashes on library initialize when called from Java

The setup I have is I'm using a Java application to call native C-code with JNI, which in turn starts up the MATLAB runtime and calls functions on it (I know there are other solutions to call MATLAB methods from Java). The problem is that the MATLAB engine crashes at some point during the initialization and I don't know what's causing it exactly. The crash causes my jvm to terminate, I assume it's some kind of memory corruption.   I am marshalling (serializing) JAXB beans to output stream. How can I add DOCTYPE declaration and xml processing instructions to ouput? I am doing currently marshalling like this: JAXBContext jaxbContext = JAXBContext.newInstance("com.example.package"); Marshaller marshaller = jaxbContext.createMarshaller(); marshaller.setProperty(Marshaller.JAXB_FORMATTED_OUTPUT, Boolean.TRUE); SchemaFactory schemaFactory = SchemaFactory.newInstance("http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema"); Schema schema = schemaFactory.newSchema(schemaSource); marshaller.setSchema(schema); marshaller.marshal(object, output); I'd like have output that looks something like this: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <!DOCTYPE Something SYSTEM "some.dtd"> <?xml-stylesheet type="text/xsl" href="some.xsl"?> JAXB bean are generated code so I don't want to change them. There are some undocumented tricks to add the xml processing instructions and doctype. But what is the preferred or right way to do this?

• HTTP requests and Apache modules: Creative attack vectors

  Slightly unorthodox question here: I'm currently trying to break an Apache with a handful of custom modules. What spawned the testing is that Apache internally forwards requests that it considers too large (e.g. 1 MB trash) to modules hooked in appropriately, forcing them to deal with the garbage data - and lack of handling in the custom modules caused Apache in its entirety to go up in flames. Ouch, ouch, ouch. That particular issue was fortunately fixed, but the question's arisen whether or not there may be other similar vulnerabilities. Right now I have a tool at my disposal that lets me send a raw HTTP request to the server (or rather, raw data through an established TCP connection that could be interpreted as an HTTP request if it followed the form of one, e.g. "GET ...") and I'm trying to come up with other ideas. (TCP-level attacks like Slowloris and Nkiller2 are not my focus at the moment.) Does anyone have a few nice ideas how to confuse the server and/or its modules to the point of self-immolation? Broken UTF-8? (Though I doubt Apache cares about encoding - I imagine it just juggles raw bytes.) Stuff that is only barely too long, followed by a 0-byte, followed by junk? et cetera I don't consider myself a very good tester (I'm doing this by necessity and lack of manpower; I unfortunately don't even have a more than basic grasp of Apache internals that would help me along), which is why I'm hoping for an insightful response or two or three. Maybe some of you have done some similar testing for your own projects? (If stackoverflow is not the right place for this question, I apologise. Not sure where else to put it.)

• Why doesn't my android application show up in the launcher?

  I'm developing an application for the Android platform targeted for api level 4 (Android 1.6) but I can't get it to show up on my phone and I can't figure out why. Here's my AndroidManifest.xml is there a problem in here?
