  I need to generate a mass mailing based on a word document model with PHP. Given is a database with the adresses and the data that need to be filled in my word model. I want to generate a single word document with the different adresses and field contents from the database. We have a Linux server and the COM object is not avalaible. Is there a ready to use class to do this? Did you had any experiance with PHPWord? What is the best practice in this case? In the ideal case the client should just upload th word master document, with the fields that need to be filled and then fusioned to a multiple pages word document containing the whole mailing.

• Popular open source projects using Zend Framework

  Hello, I am trying to find any open source project based on Zend Framework. Something well written and as popular as Wordpress or Drupal to see actual benefits of ZF as well as possibly use it as an example. The only 'showcase' I managed to find is http://framework.zend.com/wiki/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=14134. But this list looks confusing as for the 'official' PHP framework. The same is about ZF statistics by numbers (http://framework.zend.com/about/numbers) - 10 million downloads against 400 actual projects which is less than 500 examples in the user guide... Also Yahoo chose Symfony for their bookmarks service not ZF... Am I missing something? Thank you!

• How to escape/strip special characters in the LaTeX document?

  We implemented the online service where it is possible to generate PDF with predefined structure. User can choose a LaTeX template and then compile it with an appropriate inputs. The question we worry about is the security, that the malicious user was not able to gain shell access through the injection of special instruction into latex document. We need some workaround for this or at least a list of special characters that we should strip from the input data. Preferred language would be PHP, but any suggestions, constructions and links are very welcomed. PS. in few word we're looking form mysql_real_escape_string for LaTeX

• How to recover from a fatal error "Allowed memory size exhausted"

  Hi everybody, Do you know any solution to recover from the PHP fatal error : "Allowed memory size ... exhausted" I have a shutdown function that is called when a fatal error appear. This function create an ErrorException from it, and logs it. The problem is : when there is no more memory available, it can't log the error (I log in Firebug, via FirePHP, with Zend Framework). So what i mean by "how to recover from it", is how to perform basic error log, and let Zend Framework send the Headers, so that the error is logged (in Firebug in my case) as any other error ? • Compute column widths in a HTML-like manner (based on cell contents)

  Hi, I have a grid of data that I want to export to RTF, PDF etc. using various (and not perfect) PHP converters/generators. What I am missing most is the HTML table automatic adjustment of column widths based on the lengths of strings in the cells (strings contain line breaks which complicate things a bit, as they should be preserved). I need an algorithm that, given the contents of the cells (plain text), a total width of the table and an average width of a character, would return a width for each column. I wouldn't want to reinvent the wheel if something is already available. Of course it can't be perfect if the font is variable width, but an approximation would do just fine. Or maybe it could have a configurable table with widths for each character. Any hint would be appreciated. Thank you.

  I have a ~300.000 row table; which includes technical terms; queried using PHP and MySQL + FULLTEXT indexes. But when I searching a wrong typed term; for example "hyperpext"; naturally giving no results. I need to "compansate" little writing errors and getting nearest record from database. How I can accomplish such feaure? I know (actually, learned today) about Levenshtein distance, Soundex and Metaphone algorithms but currently not having a solid idea to implement this to querying against database. Best regards. The problem that I walk into is that I can't make it work since I don't really understand the documentation.   Hello, At the wordpress form, when you leave comment as guest, there's a website field to fill your web address. If we fill in that box, we can get the link by calling this function <?php echo get_comment_author_link(); ?> But if you are logged in and you don't add the website at your profile, when you leave comment. It doesn't have the link on your username. What I want is, if the logged-in user doesn't have the website, there will be the link which will be carry them to their profile page which is something like http://www.example.com?author=21 Is there any function that i can use out there ? Please help me out. Thank you.

  This question is specifically about PHP, but I'm guessing it might be applicable to other languages as well. I've noticed that between PHP4 and PHP5, the designers of the language shifted away from using -1 as a return value to using constants or other forms of output. This makes sense, as -1 is not particularly evocative, and I'm guessing this practice led to confusion. That said, I am sometimes inclined to return -1 when I want to quickly add another return option to a function, and -1 often seems like a perfectly valid way to express the outcome I am coding for. So here are my questions: Is my observation generally correct, regarding the move away from -1 as a return value in PHP5 vs PHP4? What are the cons of returning -1, beyond for the reason I mentioned above, wherein the -1 return value doesn't contribute positively to code clarity?

• How to handle large table in MySQL ?

  I've a database used to store items and properties about these items. The number of properties is extensible, thus there is a join table to store each property associated to an item value. CREATE TABLE `item_property` ( `property_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `item_id` int(11) NOT NULL, `value` double NOT NULL, PRIMARY KEY (`property_id`,`item_id`), KEY `item_id` (`item_id`) ) ENGINE=InnoDB DEFAULT CHARSET=utf8 COLLATE=utf8_unicode_ci; This database has two goals : storing (which has first priority and has to be very quick, I would like to perform many inserts (hundreds) in few seconds), retrieving data (selects using item_id and property_id) (this is a second priority, it can be slower but not too much because this would ruin my usage of the DB). Currently this table hosts 1.6 billions entries and a simple count can take up to 2 minutes... Inserting isn't fast enough to be usable. I'm using Zend_Db to access my data and would really be happy if you don't suggest me to develop any php side part. Thanks for your advices !

  I am making a notification system so that when users in a group perform an action, it will notify all the other users in the group. I want the notification to be marked "read" or "unread" for each user of the group. With that, I can easily retreive any unread notification for a user and display it. As it means that when there is 1,000 users in a group, then I have to insert 1,000 rows to the table. If not, what is the better way of doing this? • Is there a way to query if array field contains a certain value in Doctrine2?

  Starting out with Symfony2 + Doctrine. I have a table with User objects (fos_user), for which my schema contains a roles column of an 'array' type. Doctrine saves fields of this type by serializing them from php 'array' to 'longtext' (in mysql's case). So let's say I have the following users saved into DB: **User1**: array(ROLE_ADMIN, ROLE_CUSTOM1) **User2**: array(ROLE_ADMIN, ROLE_CUSTOM2) **User3**: array(ROLE_CUSTOM2) Now in my controller I want to select all users with ROLE_ADMIN set. Is there a way to write a DQL query which would directly return me User1 and User2? Or do I need to fetch all users to have Doctrine to unserialize roles column and then for each of them do in_array('ROLE_ADMIN', $user-getRoles())? I have searched the DQL part of the manual, but so far did not find anything similar to my needs...

• Unread email notifier, most practical approach

  I'm in the process of writing a small php-cli script that will loop over over my personal inbox and then send me an SMS via a gateway. The question I have is: As will have the script launch via cron every 10 minutes, if there is an email sitting in my inbox that is not read before the next script launch then I will receive 2 sms. Does any one (pseudocode will do) have any idea what the best practice would be in php5 to ensure only 1 SMS is sent? What I am currently learning towards is towards storing the message ID in a sqlite DB and flagging a field whether an SMS has been sent or not - but wondering if there is an easier way?

• Zend Framework Relations vs. Table Select

  Hey! I just want to know your guys opinion on using join tables within the zend framework. Of course you can use relations by defining a referenceMap and dependentTables and stuff, or using setIntegrityCheck(false) within a db select(). The setIntegrityCheck version seems a little bit dirty to me, but the other version is not very suitable for big querys and joining many tables... I'm a PHP developer for 5 years now and new to the zend framework and just want get a direction for my first project. Thanks!!!

  Is there a way to actively serve Apache's default, built-in 404 page for a number of URLs using mod_rewrite? Not a custom error document, but a rule like RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/dirname/pagename RewriteRule -- serve 404 page ----- I know how to build a PHP page that sends the 404 header and have mod_rewrite redirect all the URLs there but I would prefer a solution that is based on mod_rewrite only. I just had the idea of redirecting to a non-existent address: RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} ^/dirname/pagename RewriteRule .* /sflkadsölfkasdfölkasdflökasdf but that would give the user the message "/sflkadsölfkasdfölkasdflökasdf does not exist" on the error page, which looks a bit unprofessional.

• PHPUnit doesn't recognize file_exists()

  I've set up a project with unit test files in NetBeans. I set bootstrap to C:\www\foo\_tests\TestAutoload.php and put simple autoload method to this file: function __autoload( $class_name ) { // series of ifs if ( ... ) { $file_name = ... } if ( file_exists ( $file_name ) ) { require_once( $file_name ); } else { echo "autoload error"; } } All of my tests fail on autoload this way. They always output just "autoload error". If I don't check if file_exists and just use require_once( $file ) no matter what's in $file, it works perfectly. Anyone encountered anything like this before? It's not something I couldn't resolve by simply not checking whether file exists or not, but I'm interested why it does this and if I can cheat it somehow.

• Javascript form validation events

  Hi All, I am making a small form for a php app and had a question regarding javascript validation. What is the best event to run the javascript validation on the input value? Is it the "focusout" event? I used "focusout" to originally but it creates problems when the user hits enter while they are still focused on any particular field in the form. Should I run the js validation when the user clicks submit? Just looking for some advice. Thanks! Chuck
