• CGAL replacement for iOS

  I have a set of nodes that define streets. Each node has latitude and longitude. Also I have user location with latitude and longitude. My intention is to build Voronoi diagram for segments defined by each pair of nodes, and then find which node user location is closest to. Looks like this task can be accomplished with CGAL library. While I'm in the process of compiling it for iOS environment, probably you guys will be able to give links to libs that are already compiled against iOS, or were intended to be used in Objective C environment from the very beginning... Because I'm afraid that even if CGAL compiles for me, I might get into trouble when using it. Thanks!

• Hopefully simple topic to spark some good opinions, Question is MySQL or SQL Server???

  I'm beginning development of a website and a high priority is for it to be extremely optimized, quick responses, etc. There will ultimately end up being large amounts of rows in the main tables (millions), so scalability is also important. It will need to use a database on the back-end for data storage and my web hosting service supports either MySQL or Sql Server. This website will be developed with .NET ASP.NET MVC with NHibernate (hopefully it can run in medium trust mode, as that is a requirement of my web hosting and reflection requirements of NHibernate may be problematic, maybe someone has a comment on this too). I'd also prefer to use the database that will require the least attention in regards to management. I don't want to have to be a DBA here. :) I wanted to through this topic out to the public to see what the community thinks? So MySQL or Sql Server, generally, which one would be better to use?

  Look at the following string: SELECT column1 , column2, column3 FROM table1 WHERE column1 = 'text, "FROM" \'from\\\' x' AND column2 = "sample text 'where' \"where\\\" " AND ( column3 = 5 ) I need to escape unnecessary white space characters from the string like: removing white space from beginning and ending position of , ( ) etc removing newline (\r\n) and tabs (\t) But one thing. The remove process could not remove white spaces from the quoted string like: 'text, "FROM" \'from\\' x' "sample text 'where' \"where\\" " etc. i need to use the PHP function: preg_replace($pattern, $replacement, $string); So what will be the value of $pattern and $replacement where the value of $string is the given SQL.

• Sort/Enumerate an NSArray from somewhere in the middle?

  I have an NSArray, with objects ordered like so: a b c d e f I would like to enumerate through this array in this order: c d e f a b i.e. starting at some point that is not the beginning, but hitting all the items. I imagine this is a matter of sorting first and then enumerating the array, but I'm not sure if that's the best technique... or, frankly, how to sort the array like this. Edit Adding details: These will be relatively small arrays, varying from 3 to 10 objects. No concurrent access. I'd like to permanently alter the sort order of the array each time I do this operation.

• How to kill all subprocesses of shell?

  I'm writing bash script, which does several thing. In the beginning it starts several monitor scripts, each of them runs some other tools. At the end of my main script, I would like to kill all things that spawned from my shell. So, it might looks like this: #!/bin/bash some_monitor1.sh & some_monitor2.sh & some_monitor3.sh & do_some_work ... kill_subprocesses The thing is that most of these monitors spawn their own subprocesses, so doing (for example): killall some_monitor1.sh will not always help. Any other way to handle this situation?

• is PHP itself transforming into a framework?

  At the beginning PHP was a scripting language. But after the introduction and improvement of OOP I see more and more objects added to the core. They started with SPL which grew a lot, now we have DOMDocument family, DateTime family which should be part of PECL, Pear or Zend Framework or implemented by each one of us. Shouldn't be php only for build-in functions and all these objects passed to something else? Example. DateTime class is part of the core and I see it very similar with Zend_Date.

• Generator speed in python 3

  Hello all, I am going through a link about generators that someone posted. In the beginning he compares the two functions below. On his setup he showed a speed increase of 5% with the generator. I'm running windows XP, python 3.1.1, and cannot seem to duplicate the results. I keep showing the "old way"(logs1) as being slightly faster when tested with the provided logs and up to 1GB of duplicated data. Can someone help me understand whats happening differently? • File Explorer using Java - how to go about it?

  Hi, I am set to create a file explorer using Java. The aim is to emulate the behavior of the default explorer as closely as possible, whatever may be the underlying OS. I have done NO GUI programming in Java. I have looked-up Swing, SWT and JFace, and I am beginning my project with this tutorial: http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/opensource/library/os-ecgui1/ I would like to know your opinions about the best approach to tackle this problem. If you could comment on complexity of coding, portability and OS-independence, and efficiency, it would be great. Is there anything else I should know? Do some other ways exist? Thanks a lot!

• Book recommendation for a Ruby dev learning Java

  I've been a Ruby developer for the past 4-5 years, and prior to that coded in Perl and a language called ProvideX for years. As hard as it may seem, I've never written a Java application short of the basic Hello World app probably a decade ago. I'm beginning to start doing some Android development to port some iPhone applications we did for a client over to the Android platform. As such, I'm wondering what the best reference book I can buy is to get up to speed quickly with the features (and peculiarities) of Java. There are numerous "Learn Ruby for Java programmers" out there, but not really any reference books for going the otherway of Ruby-to-Java. I'm looking for something preferably like the "Learn Perl the Hard Way" book. I know how to code, I just need a reference on learning the proper mechanics of Java after having done Ruby (and a bit of Obj-C) work exclusively for the past few years.

• What is the best approach to manipulate assets in Drupal from .Net application?

  I'm beginning work on a project that will access a Drupal site to create nodes on the site. This includes file uploading, as the project is to allow people to upload pictures en mass to a Drupal site with minimal ado. Note that my application is written in .Net. What I would like to know is the best approach to achieve the same? Based on initial research it looks like there are several options: 1. XML-RPC 2. Custom PHP module deployed in drupal. But, what is the way to invoke it from .Net? 3. Use a cron job to pick up the files from a watch folder. And add a cron_hook in my module to deploy the file.

• Simplest way of creating java next/previous buttons

  I know that when creating buttons, like next and previous, that the code can be somewhat long to get those buttons to function. I see that the fillTextFields(false) uses a boolean value and that you need to initialize that boolean value in the beginning of the code I believe. I had put private fillTextFields boolean = false; but this does not seem to be right... I'm just hoping someone could explain it better. Thanks :)

  I have implemented a small ordering and stock control system (for internal using) with the MVC 2 framework. Now my friends, they want to have a website to present the existing products for their customers. I know, I know they will ask me to do this one day. So in the beginning, I have made the controller name to start with "Admin". But now I am not sure the best way to implement their requirements. Could you advise me? 1.For the security reason, I did not allowed anonymous user to access the website a part from the CSS and image files. My question is the controllers' name are not folders' name, how could I set this up? 2.I'm planning to put the admin section into an "area" and will it be a good way to go? • Support both Standard mode and Quirks mode? Is that possible and necessary?

  Today I was assigned a bug saying that some page elements don't work on IE8 Quirks mode at all, and I need to fix them. The point is that I believe our pages will always be rendered in Standard mode, because we specify DOCTYPE at the beginning of every page (via master page). I'd think it must be some debugging tools changed that during testing. I managed to convice QA to close it as by design, after a brief explanation to her. Now I start to think the question that whether we should have our page work on both Standard and Quirks mode. Maybe we should try to minimize the problem even if the page is not rendering in a supposed mode? Any standard or best practices on that? Thanks!

• Adobe Air: Read and Write MP3 or JPG from local directory and switch bytes

  I would like to make my local jpg and mp3 files kind of unreadable (without encoding) by just putting the first 100 bytes from the beginning of the file to the end and then saving the file with a .dat extension. I know I have to use the byte array but can't get it work. I would also need then a small function to read that file and put the 100bytes back to the front so that I can play/display the file. It would be great if you could post the whole function because I am quite new to Air so that I fully understand. Thank You!!!!

• ASF duration is 29 secs, WMP plays 25 secs. How come?

  Hi All. I've created a custom ASF file containing compressed voice + screen streams. The total duration of the file according to the header is 29 secs. When opening it in WMP (using custom DMOs to play the streams), the file plays 25 seconds, and then the seek bar snaps to the beginning, but oddly, WMP continues to play 4 more seconds before stopping. Looking at the ASF with ASF Viewer - there are 29 seconds of packets , and both "play duration" and "send duration" are 29 seconds. Why would WMP only see 25 seconds?? Thanks

• Is there a way put a timestamp in the file header automatically when saving in Eclipse?

  I am a PHP developer using Eclipse PDT. I would like a timestamp put automatically in my file headers whenever I save the file. Maybe as a replacement of a variable. Let's say I use this header in a file: /** * ${filename} * ${timestamp} */ When I save the file I would this to be replaced with: /** * Myfile.php * 4/20/2010 19:04 */ It would also be ok if there is a macro that would add a line at the very beginning of the file just containing a timestamp. I'm on chapter 4 and I'm getting the following compile error on the "if (segment == kShowSegmentIndex)" line: error:expected ')' before ';' token Here's my code: - (IBAction)toggleShowHide:(id)sender{ UISegmentedControl *segmentedControl = (UISegmentedControl *)sender; NSInteger segment = segmentedControl.selectedSegmentIndex; if (segment == kShowSegmentIndex) [switchView setHidden:NO]; else [switchView setHidden:YES]; } I've compared it with the code in the book several times and have retyped it. Sounds like this error is caused by improper brace placement. Any thoughts?

• Have you switched from CodeIgniter to Kohana?

  Hi All, I usually just work with straight PHP, but want to try MVC and see if a framework will really speed up development. After much waffling, analysis paralysis, and many dumb SO questions, I thought I had settled on CodeIgniter for my next PHP project. However, I am now seriously considering Kohana. Has anyone made the switch from CI to Kohana? If so, why? What's better about the actual code, libraries, etc? Edit: Hi All, I did end up going with Kohana. It's easy to use, but more importantly, it's easy NOT to use, since there are a lot of things I like to work with native PHP for. It's ridiculously extensible, well coded, and seems like it is beginning to pull out ahead of CI in a few things like putting views in views, passing subview data, etc. I am sure CI will catch up, but Kohana should be 3 steps ahead by then =o)

• How do you move the pointer up or down multiple lines with Emacs?

  I can move my pointer up and down one line with my arrow key just fine in Emacs, so I'd like to redefine C-n and C-p to move up and down 5 lines at a time. I'm just beginning to learn how to use Emacs, and elisp is very alien to me. I tried using the GNU Emacs lisp reference, but I couldn't find how to bind a keystroke to multiple commands. Here's what I have so far (concentrating on the moving up definition): (global-set-key "\C-p" '(loop for i in '(1 2 3 4 5) do ('previous-line))) But, this brings up an error message when I hit C-p, "Wrong type argument." Any suggestions? Thanks!

As the connection was release, i call [self.tableView reloadData] , but cant work. So i'd like to know, how to make this? • Set Focus After Last Character in Text Box

  I have 3 text boxes for a phone number. As the user types, it automatically moves from one textbox to the next. When the user presses backspace, I can move focus to the previous text box. The problem is that in IE, focus is set to the beginning of the text box.   I get this error when compiling: forrtl: severe (256): unformatted I/O to unit open for formatted transfers, unit 27, file C:\Abaqus_JOBS\w.txt The error occurs in the beginning of the analysis. At the start, the file w.txt is created but is empty. The error may be related to the fact that I want to read from an empty file. • How to synchronize threads in python?

  I have two threads in python (2.7). I start them at the beginning of my program. While they execute, my program reaches the end and exits, killing both of my threads before waiting for resolution. • Trigger the change event of a textbox in jQuery

  I have an asp:TextBox with asp:RegularExpressionValidator to validate if it's a number. Obviously an onchange event will be attached to this textbox while rendering. But the .net js throws an error. I traced in the js: function ValidatorOnChange(event) { ... } and found that all of event.fromElement,event.toElement,event.srcElement are null which causes the exception. Did I do something wrong?   I am connecting to MySQL database on my webpage and have this copy-pasted code for errors: if(DB::isError($db)) die($db->getMessage()); I have the connection code in an outside file called connection.inc that I include at the beginning of my page before the DOCTYPE and html tags. For debugging purposes, how can I print the database errors on my webpage? I thought I could do something like this: echo 'Could not connect to database. The error was:' . $db->getMessage(); but this returns: Fatal error: Call to undefined method DB_mysql::getMessage()
