    Yesterday we looked at the Browser Ballot Screen, which offers 12 different browsers as alternatives to IE for European Windows users. This got us thinking about this weeks question. What browser do you use for your daily web navigation?   Yesterday we showed you the Browser Ballot Screen which was introduced in March to Windows users in Europe. While it offers the choice of the most well known browsers on the market, there are some obscure choices as well. This got us thinking about what web browser(s) you use at home, in the office, or even on your mobile devices. Some people might have a favorite browser they use at home but are required to use IE at work due to proprietary applications the company uses.   • Fix Google Reader Lag by Blocking Google Plus Button

    Chrome: Many Google Reader fans have noticed, since the upgrades last month, that the service is unbearably slow. Speed things up by blocking the Google Plus button. Ever since the upgrade from the old Google Reader interface to the new integrated-with-Google-Plus interface, many Google Reader users were reporting a painfully long lag between reading entries in Reader. Previously hitting a keyboard shortcut or arrow button to move you through the new stories was instant with no noticeable lag. After the upgrade a lag of 3-5 seconds per individual story became common (we experienced this annoying lag around the How-To Geek office immediately after the upgrade). One of the theories was that the addition of the Google Plus button to every article was causing memory issues. Geeks Are Sexy tested the theory by blocking this address: plusone.google.com/u/0/_/+1/fastbutton using AdBlock. While people were reporting great success with that move (and you may find it works great too) we didn’t have any luck. What did work for us was installing Chromeblock and, while visiting reader.google.com, clicking on the ChromeBlock toolbar button and blocking Google +1.   • X-notifier doesn't work in Chromium Browser

    It just keeps checking in vain. Also cannot import or export data, but get this error I use the latest versions of both in Lubuntu 12.04. In Google Chrome it works. What could it be the problem?   • Can't get msbuild.exe path correct with Hudson's MSBuild plugin

    I have the msbuild plugin installed on my Hudson server, and it's attempting to execute the command, but for some reason the path I'm setting in my configuration is not being used when the msbuild task gets fired. I have the following set in the configuration of hudson's msbuild plugin: Path To msbuild.exe C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\msbuild.exe I left the name property blank. When I do a build it outputs this: Executing command: cmd.exe /C msbuild.exe /p:Configuration=Release ... Which I know is wrong because all the other examples show the [msbuild.exe] part fully qualified. I've been searching everywhere trying to figure out why this isn't getting set properly and I've hit a brick wall. Does anyone know how to fix this?

    To try to use a reason SSL/TLS session key timeout on the server-side, I'd like to know how long popular browsers cache session keys on the client. Microsoft describes this information for Windows/IE here: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc776467(WS.10).aspx But, I haven't been able to find similar information for other popular browsers. Does anyone know? Thanks!

  • What build param(s) to use so VS 2010 can gen .obj & link .objs but NOT create an .exe?

    Question title pretty much asks it all. I know I could set the project to be a .lib build and have it fail to build/link a .lib .... and the .objs tend to be in the appropriate config dir That seems like a shi*-a** backdoor way to get VS to gen objs Is there a flag/param I can set somewhere in the property sheet properties/options for Visual Studio so it links what it needs to & gens the respective objs for each source file? It's so freaking easy to just gen object files using gcc (and link in appropriate lib routines WITHOUT creating an executable) ... I'm sure I could also hack up a custom build rule but that seems like overkill [and since I'm not up to speed on the build rules for whatever version of make VS 2010 is using it's easier to ask someone else here for the simple solution]

    Okay - this is the dumbest glitch I have seen in a while: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd"> <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en"> <head> <script type='text/javascript'> var data = "</script>"; </script> </head> <body> This should break! </body> </html> This causes syntax errors because the JavaScript parser is actually reading the contents of the string. How stupid! How can I put </script> in my code. Is there any way? Is there a valid reason for this behavior?

    Hi I am running a vb.exe through automation. In exe I have return a code which takes a data from database and saves that data into file. I ran that .exe for the first time. It took 1 mins. For testing baseline I called same .exe 5 times one after the other. But it took nearly 10 mins to generate. My question is if it takes 1 min for 1 report to generate then it should take 5 mins to generate 5 report but why it is taking 10 mins (more than the double). Is there any problem while calling a exe one after the other?

  • Print from Chrome without the print dialogs? Using Greasemonkey userscript maybe?

    We're developing a browser-based warehouse app that needs to print labels and invoices regularly. We want to be able to print to the local printer without going the the usual browser print dialogs. Is this possible? Possibly using a greasemonkey userscript? We don't want to have to setup a whole CUPS printer network and deal with all that, but warehouse pickers having to click through a print dialog 1000 times a day isn't an option. We're printing PDFs, not sure if that matters. If we could do this another way using HTML5 or something else I'm open to course changes or other ideas here.

    VB.NET: Can the .EXE built by VS2005 be deployed as a standalone EXE? When I change the mode in VS2005 to "Release" and build the solution, the bin\Release directory then contains the solution .EXE file, but also a .pdb, vshost.exe and .xml file. What are these extra files and are they necessary? I copied the .exe file to another machine and it executed properly, but there was a significant delay when it first executed - thereafter it was like any other program. What is the reason for this, and can it be helped? Is it because the other 3 files in the Release folder are not there with it?

  • Why does an EXE file that does *nothing* contain so many dummy zero bytes?

    Hi, I've compiled a C file that does absolutely nothing (just a main that returns... not even a "Hello, world" gets printed), and I've compiled it with various compilers (MinGW GCC, Visual C++, Windows DDK, etc.). All of them link with the C runtime, which is standard. But what I don't get is: When I open up the file in a hex editor (or a disassembler), why do I see that almost half of the 16 KB is just huge sections of either 0x00 bytes or 0xCC bytes? It seems rather ridiculous to me... is there any way to prevent these from occurring? And why are they there in the first place? Thank you!

    Wait, wait, this is a programming question! I want to build an extension if none exists. Imagine this: you come across a webpage that says "Just send a message to [email protected]" but to actually send the email, you need to highlight the address and then cut and paste it into the recipient field of a new compose window of your email client of choice. Obviously life would be easier if it were simply a mailto: link, so you could click on it and have a new message created automatically. (Or if the page designer had used a form, perhaps ...) I was originally going to ask if there was an extension to enable similar functionality for unlinked twitter @username mentions but I thought this email address problem would be a simpler situation. If you think it would be useless, perhaps I should look at the twitter username problem instead. Thanks for your feedback.

  • Install windows service without InstallUtil.exe

    Hi, I'm trying to deploy a windows service but not quite sure how to do it right. I built it as a console app to start with, I've now turned it into a windows service project and just call my class from the OnStart method in the service. I now need to install this on a server which doesn't have Visual Studio on it, which if I've understood it correctly means I can't use the InstallUtil.exe and have to create an installer class instead. Is this correct? I did have a look at a previous question, http://stackoverflow.com/questions/255056/install-a-net-windows-service-without-installutil-exe, but I just want to make sure I've understood it correctly. If I create the class that question's accepted answer links to, what is the next step? Upload MyService.exe and MyService.exe.config to the server, double click the exe file and Bob's my uncle?     Hi, I want to create toolbar, whose functionality would be: Whenever the toolbar is "On/Activated", all pages should be parsed by a function, and the modified html should be displayed. [Example: i) There was this skype toolbar that would recognize phone-numbers in pages and automatically add skype links ii) If you have used MacAfee / Alexa toolbars, they modify the search results page displayed by Google My functionality would a lot simpler though] I want to create this for all browsers (though answers/pointers to any one platform would be appreciated). Please note that I am new to toolbar development, so detailed pointers from basics would be very helpful. I have heard to GreaseMonkey. However, if I can do it in a more "basic" way, it would be very helpful. (Alternately, tips to make a "custom" toolbar using GreaseMonkey would be welcome - though I would like to do away with ability to add scripts, etc. Also I installed greasemonkey and it does show up as a toolbar in FF/IE at all!   • How do I route watir through a proxy pragmatically?

    I'm trying to route watir through a proxy pragmatically -- this means within the script I'd like to change my proxy dynamically before launching the browser. Here's what I've tried so far (and so far am failing): I'm running chrome and lucid lynx ubuntu. I chose TREX cause I thought watir might be making use of PROXY or something. I rewrote /usr/bin/google-chrome as: #!/bin/bash /opt/google/chrome/chrome --proxy-server="$TREX" $@ The reason I'm passing in the environment variable to proxy-server rather than http_proxy is because I never could get http_proxy to work as is anyways then I did a simple: require 'rubygems' require 'watir-webdriver' ENV['TREX'] = "XX.XX.XX.XX:YY" browser = Watir::Browser.new(:chrome) browser.goto("http://mysite.com") Anyways, what is happening here is that it is forwarding me to the login page of the proxy rather than just forwarding the request. What am I missing here? I feel like I'm pretty close.

  • How to scale an image (in data URI format) in JavaScript (real scaling, not using styling)

    We are capturing a visible tab in a Chrome browser (by using the extensions API chrome.tabs.captureVisibleTab) and receiving a snapshot in the data URI scheme (Base64 encoded string). Is there a JavaScript library that can be used to scale down an image to a certain size? Currently we are styling it via CSS, but have to pay performance penalties as pictures are mostly 100 times bigger than required. Additional concern is also the load on the localStorage we use to save our snapshots. Does anyone know of a way to process this data URI scheme formatted pictures and reduce their size by scaling them down?   • Is Google tracking our web history even when we do not visit Google or if affiliate websites?

    I have recently updated to Google Chrome 29.0.1547.76. And when I click a the new tab button there is a new homepage now. Ok. My current settings forbid from third party cookies being set. And I clear all of my browsing data every time I close or well if its been too long browsing. Ok so there is this help dialog that appears first time you open the new tab page. What I did was Cleared all my browsing settings (From Beginning of time) and then again I went to the new tab, the Help dialog appears. And for the third time I did the same and the Same thing Happened. So For the fourth time I cleared all my Browsing data. Clicked open new tab and then. navigate myself to chrome://settings/cookies. and there were So does this mean google is tracking our web History just for using Chrome. I know Its not Illegal because these cookies only appear when you click the new tab Google Chrome 29.0.1547.76. maybe that was the reason google redesigned the entire New:tab page. From this Google is forcing us to allow them track us. I don't want to set another page as my new:tab page. I just want the old one. Google has a long History of invading Privacy without users consent. There was that Safari incident. I am sure you people remember. So can anyone tell me about this issue? I maybe wrong. So please explain.

  • How to control the download url for dotNetFx35setup.exe without using the Visual Studio bootstrapper

    Previously I've used to Visual Studio 2008 setup.bin to generate a bootstrapper. I had some issues with it which were difficult to resolve and turned to dotNetInstaller. One great thing with the VS 2008 generated bootstrapper, was that I was able to control the download location for the .NET framework. By using the MSBuild task I could specify the componentsLocation: <GenerateBootstrapper ApplicationFile="$(TargetFileName)" ApplicationName="MyApp" ApplicationUrl="http://$(InstallerHost)$(DownloadUrl)" BootstrapperItems="@(BootstrapperFile)" CopyComponents="True" ComponentsLocation="Relative" OutputPath="$(OutputPath)" Path="C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDKs\Windows\v6.0A\Bootstrapper\" /> Here I'm able to use the ComponentsLocation="Relative" and the bootstrapper would download from our own web server - which is what I want. When I no longer have the VS 2008 bootstrapper, I would like to have the same feature. The new boostrapper downloads the dotNetFx35setup.exe from a defined server, but the problem is that this ".NET bootstrapper" connects to Microsoft's servers for downloading the needed packages. Trying to run the following command: dotNetFx35setup.exe /? did not show any options to control the download location. The web server will contain the package structure which the Windows SDK (v6.0A) has within the Bootstrapper\Packages directory. The structure looks like this: Packages DotNetFX DotNetFX30 DotNetFX35 DotNetFx35Client DotNetFx35SP1 ..... When I state a dependency to the .NET Framework 3.5, the DotNetFX35 directory structure gets copied into the bin/Debug directory. I've copied this directory onto the web server and it looks like this: DotNetFX35 dotNetFX20 dotNetFX30 dotNetFX35 x64 netfx35_x64.exe x86 netfx35_x86.exe dotNetMSP dotNetFx35setup.exe The other directories contains mainly MSI, MSP and MSU files. So any pointers on how to control downloading of the .NET framework. Shouldn't I use the dotNetFx35setup.exe file? If not - which should I use?

  • Setting processor affinity on CSC.exe launched by CoreCompile MSBuild Task

    I am wondering if there is simple way to ensure that when a c# project is compiled the CSC.exe launched inherits the parent processor affinity settings, or perhaps of a way where by i can supply this. I have been trying to accomplish this by launching a bat file from vs.net cmd prompt like start /affinity 01 custombuild.cmd and inside my custombuild.cmd i have @echo off msbuild Libraries.sln /t:rebuild /p:Configuration=Release;platform=x64 /m:1 :END The command line call to Csc.exe this generates looks like the following C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Csc.exe ... ignoring the rest for brevity. What i 'd like to see is the CSC.exe to inherit the processor affinity or a simple way to be able to override how csc.exe call is generated so i can make it into a start /affinity 01 C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v4.0.30319\Csc.exe ... ignoring the rest for brevity. I also noticed that CoreCompile target is defined in Microsoft.CSharp.targets, should i be considering overriding MSBuildToolsPath variable so i can sneak in my own version. This feels rather hacky. Any help would be much appreciated.

    So I've been trying to solve the "The application-specific permission settings do not grant Local Activation permission" problem and everything I've been reading says I need to get "DCOMperm.exe". There are plenty of links to usage and download links that point to non-MS sources. I'd like to get this direct from Microsoft, but I can't find it there. Some people say that it's part of an SDK, but I'm not sure which one. Does anyone have any experience getting this exe?
