• Visitors have old website cached in their browsers

  My client's new website is example.com, the old website is example.co.uk. I've re-pointed the A Records to the new website (so as to leave the emails alone) and put in 301 redirects from old pages to new pages. But, my client is upset as he (and he thinks many of his clients) have the old website cached in their browsers and won't know how to clear their browser cache. Is there anything I can do to overcome this and if not, what sort of time will browsers finally stop using their cached pages so I can at least go back to my client and tell him that his clients will finally start to see the new website?

  I have compiled all of my sound effects into one sequenced .ogg file. I have the start and stop times for each sound effect. How do I play the individual effects? That is, how do I play part of an audio file. More specificially, I've created a dictionary { 'sword_hit': { src: 'sfx.ogg', start: 265, // ms length: 212 // ms } } that my play_sound() function can use to look up 'sword_hit' and play the correct audio file at the correct start time for the correct duration. I simply need to know how to tell the WebAudio API to start playing at start ms and only play for length ms.

• Why am I am unable to open exe files?

  It doesn't matter what disk I use, it can not open the program. I keep getting the following error: Archive: /media/xxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe [/media/xxxxxxxxxx/INSTALL/_Setupa.exe] End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. • What stops HTML5 and JS apps to perform as good as native apps?

  From what I understand, HTML is a mark-up language, so is the content of XAML, XIB and whatever Android uses and other native UI development frameworks. JavaScript is a programming language used along with it to handle client side scripting which will include things like event handling, client side validations and anything else C#,Java,Objective-C or C++ do in various such frameworks. There are MVC/MVVM patterns available in form frameworks like Sencha's, Angular etc. We have localStorage in form of both sqlite and key-value store as other frameworks have and you have API specification for almost everything that it missing. Whenever a native UI frameworks has to render UI , it has to parse a similar the markup and render the UI. Question break-down What stops from doing the same in HTML and JS itself ? Instead of having a web-control or browser as a layer in between why can't HTML(along with CSS) and JS be made to perform the same way ? Even if there is a layer,so does .net runtime and JVM are in other cases where C++,C are not being used. So Lets take the case of Android, like Dalvik, why Can't Chromium be another option(along with dalvik and NDK) where HTML does what android markup does and JavaScript is used to do what Java does ? So the Question is, Even if current implementations aren't as good, but theoretically is it possible to get HTML5 based applications to work as other native apps specially on mobile ?

  I previously had Ubuntu 12.04 and had my Login Keyring set to a password that I don't remember and am not able to guess. I changed my Linux version to Mint 15 Cinnamon recently, but everytime I sync my Google account with my browser, the Login Keyring keeps coming back. I tried the /Preferences/Password method but there is no file as such which is created. Also, .gnome2 folder doesn't have any keyring file. How can I make the box go away for all?

  Welcome to Ubuntu and the lack of support( 12.04 LOS ). If I say Ubuntu 12.04 is a so so broken OS, I will get flamed. But if I ask for help, I can here the crickets chirruping. Unix/Linux user have an attitude and really don't like to share info. Because if they help everyone, they wouldn't have anyone to call a noob. Then their moms basement wouldn't be the same without being able to flame Ubuntu noobs. I am going back to windows I don't have to spend all day trying to get a single app or option to work. Sure Ubuntu is fun to tinker with but it is not a professional consumer OS. Windows is a better consumer based os, I don't need server software(Unix) that's been broken and hacked to be used like windows(Ubuntu). All the time I have wasted trying to get Ubuntu to work CORRECTLY cost me more the Windows 7 ultimate by far. HOW MUCH IS YOUR TIME WORTH. If you are unemployed and have all night to set in your moms basement and flame noobs then Ubuntu is for you. If you want to use an external monitor on your notebook or download Adobe reader use Windows 7. When are we going to stop complaining about corporate giants like Microsoft and admit they have great products. Gave it a shot, did work for me, I have better things to do with my time. bye Ubuntu

• Chrome targeted CSS

  I have some CSS code that hides the cursor on a web page (it is a client facing static screen with no interaction). The code I use to do this is below: *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blank.cur'), pointer; } Blank.cur is a totally blank cursor file. This code works perfectly well in all browsers when I host the web files on my local server but when I upload to a Windows CE webserver (our production unit) the cursor represents itself as a black box. Odd. After some testing it seems that chrome only has a problem with totally blank cursor files when served from WinCE web server, so I created a blank cursor with one pixel as white, specifically for chrome. How do I then target this CSS rule to chrome specifically? i.e. *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blank.cur'), pointer; } <!--[if CHROME]> *, html { cursor: url('/web/resources/graphics/blankChrome.cur'), pointer; } <![endif]-->

  Checkbox alignment with its label (i.e., vertical centering) cross different web browsers makes me crazy. • jquery: Why do opacity animations only work with FF?

  I'm wondering why opacity animations only work with Firefox, and not with chrome or internet explorer. For example, jQuery("#a").fadeTo(1000,1); fades the element in with firefox, but just makes it appear with Chrome or IE. All I want is for the element to fade in. How can I get this to work with IE and chrome? Edit: Same thing if I use fadeIn() or any other similar function, like show()

  I'm finding a lot of problems with trying to determine readyState between IE8, FF3, and Chrome. so far this is what I find: Chrome, FF do not fire an event for .onReadyStateChanged Chrome, FF support .onLoad IE8 supports .onReadyStateChanged, but does not support .onLoad IE8 has also returned loaded, and complete. Mostly it states loaded, but every now and then it spits out complete. Can anyone point me to a chart or overview of browsers and the way they handle readyStates?

  Hey there again! Today I ran into a problem when I was making a new theme creator for chrome. As you may know, Chrome uses a "new" file format, called CRX, to manage it's plugins and themes. It is a basic zip file, but a bit modified: "Cr24" + derkey + signature + zipFile And here comes the problem. There are only two CRX creators, written in Ruby or Python. • Are there any standard one-click install/lauch mechanisms for the web?

  The reason I ask is mostly due to how Google Chrome installation works once you click the "Accept and install" button from Firefox. After you click the installation is started directly and when it's completed Chrome itself starts up. Firefox does not show any "Save" or "Confirm" dialogs after you click the Install button (on Chrome install web page). Now, is this standard behaviour? Or might it be due to having an old version of Chrome already on the computer (Note: The new version was still installed from Firefox). Seems a bit risky to me, all you have to do is fool the user to click something and then you can do whatever you want on his machine, or? Personally I thought things like this only worked with IE/ActiveX.

• How to reinstall OEM Windows 98 SE?

  I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on an old PC and it's not going well. I run into this problem. Searching for Boot Record from Floppy..OK Starting Windows 98... TOSHIBA Enhanced-IDE CD/DVD-ROM Device Driver (ATAPI) Version 2.24 (C)Copyright Toshiba Corp. 1995-1999. All rights reserved. Device Name : TOSCD001 Number of units : 1 MSCDEX Version 2.25 Copyright (C) MIcrosoft Corp. 1986-1995. All rights reserved. Drive Z: = Driver TOSCD001 unit 0 TOSHIBA MACHINE Invalid drive specification Path not found - C:\TOOLS\CDROMDRV.SYS Invalid drive specification Invalid drive specification After that last line, it leaves me at a bitmap image displaying instructions to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del. It doesn't say why I have to reboot, and it doesn't state any error type, it just want's me to reboot for no apparent reason. After reboot, it just boots up from Floppy again and it cycles through the same thing all over again. The computer has been restored to original specification. Original system recovery "CD-ROM" discs are available and they are not scratched or anything, they are in very good condition. It's a set of 3 CDs, and the first disc labeled "1/3" should be the one holding the OEM version of Windows 98 SE. There is also a boot disk for Windows 98. I'm not sure what the other two discs are for. This computer came with three language support, so those could be holding different language versions or additional OEM discs. But I'm quite sure that the first disc holds the main operating system. BIOS has been set to optimized defaults. Boot priority is as follows; Floppy, IDE-0, CD-ROM. Under Standard CMOS settings, BIOS scans and autoconfigures both the hard drive and the CD/DVD drive. On POST it finds them both, and it finds the DOS bootdisk and starts preparing for installation, as you can see above. So what's this "invalid drive specification" about? Why isn't the installation starting? Updates Update 1 Booting from CD disc 2 In desperation I tried booting from the second CD. Boot order was; Floppy, CD-ROM, IDE-0. It boots normally from floppy disk, just like above, but then returns following. File not found - Z:\3LNGINST\TOOLS\PARTINFO.TXT I accidentally pressed some key on the keyboard, and before I knew it, the following screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Verifying drive integrity, 16% complete. After completion another screen showed up. Create Primary DOS Partition Current fixed disk drive: 1 Do you wish to use the maximum available size for a Primary DOS Partition and make the partition active (Y/N)?....................? [Y] Verifying drive integrity, 7% complete. I didn't choose Yes, it was set automatically. After completion the computer was automatically rebooted. Then I got a new screen. This is in Norwegian/Swedish/Finnish. Here's the message in Swedish. Hårddisken är inte klar för återställning av programvara. Installationsprogrammet måste skapa nya partitioner (C:, D:, ...). VARNING! ALLT INNEHÅLL PÅ HÅRDDISKEN KOMMER ATT RADERAS! Tryck på en tangent om du vill fortsätta (eller CTRL-C för att avbryta). Let me translate that. Hard drive is not ready for restoring the software. Setup program has to create new partitions (C:, D:, ...). WARNING! ALL CONTENTS ON THE HARD DRIVE WILL BE ERASED! Press any key to continue (or CTRL-C to cancel). I pressed Enter and it started formatting the hard drive. WARNING, ALL DATA ON NON-REMOVABLE DISK DRIVE c: WILL BE LOST! Proceed with Format (Y/N)?y Formatting 14,67.53M 1 percent completed. It automatically sets the "y" option and starts formatting. Rebooting with CD disc 1 After completing this operation it rebooted automatically. I inserted CD disc 1 and there was no issue with "invalid drive specification" anymore. Instead, a bitmap menu was displayed where it asked me to choose a language. And I thought I had it there for a while but it didn't work out. After choosing the language, another menu was displayed asking me to choose a type of recovery (restore pre-installed software OR restore hard drive partitions and pre-installed software). I opted for the second option. Then a data destruction warning showed up where I just pressed 1 to Continue. It did something and then just rebooted and the same formatting screen shows up as before. So something is not right. Am I doing it wrong? I seem to have come past the CD-ROM driver issue at least. But now I'm stuck with this problem... it seems to have something to do with the hard drive. Like... why is is it always trying to format it? Isn't it enough to format it once? By the way, it needs to be formatted as FAT32, right? Windows 98 doesn't support NTFS? I think FDISK should have taken care of this already. I know this is an old hard drive, but I connected to my main computer and it was able to read and write to it without a problem. It does have bad sectors though, but it's expected on an old hard drive like this. Any ideas?.. Update 2 I seem to be repeatedly getting stuck at the format screen where it asks to press any key to continue. So tried to cancel it this time with Ctrl+C. This leaves me at: A:\TOOLS> I can do DIR and CD and I tried to change to Z: drive. I tried running "setup" but there is no such thing. Z:\>setup Bad command or file name Update 3 Floppy structure Here's the file/folder structure of the floppy disk. A:\>dir /s Volume in drive A has no label.   On my Windows Vista PC, there is always an instance of "GoogleUpdate.exe" running. I find this annoying, so I'd like to make sure it doesn't start automatically. This proves to be not so easy, as I have tried these solutions: I disabled the "Google updateservice" service I removed the registry section "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\Google Update" None of these worked. The registry section is simply re-added. Does anyone know the trick to avoid GoogleUpdate.exe to be started after booting the system?

• Having trouble using psservice and sc.exe between Windows Server 2008 machines

  I'm trying to control services on one W2k8 machine from another; no domain just a workgroup. The user account I'm logged in as is an administrator on both machines. I've tried both psservice and sc.exe. These work in a Windows Server 2003 environment but it looks like I need to an extra step or two due to the changed security model in 2008. Any ideas as to how grant permission to the Service Control Manager (psservice) or OpenService (sc)? I tried running the DOS window with "Run As Administrator" and it made no difference. • Vista logs into black screen, "Application Error 0xc0000022" for explorer.exe

  Whenever I attempt to log into a Windows Vista computer (the only account on it), I'm presented with a black screen & a cursor. I can open Task Manager, and from there I can launch applications. It seems to be using Aero Basic (instead of the full Aero which I had set as default before the problem started). When attempting to launch "explorer.exe" I get "explorer.exe - Application Error 'The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000022). Click OK to terminate the application.'" Every now and then I get an error along the lines of "the application has failed to start because its side by side configuration is incorrect please see the application event log for more detail." I can boot into safe mode successfully, but I still get the black screen when I log into it in regular mode. I've tried most of the suggestions here, but did not work. I'm attempting to back up everything right now in case the only fix is to reinstall Windows. Has anyone seen this before?
