• apt-get fails to upgrade, install, remove etc

  I upgraded from 11.10 to 12.04, had no issues that I noticed. Recently tried to install something via software center, but it was throwing errors. Changed to trying to sudo apt-get install instead but again no luck. I've genuinely tried as much as I know to fix this, but I can't so I figured I'd ask here. I've done sudo apt-get update successfully but sudo apt-get upgrade failed with... You might want to run ‘apt-get -f install’ to correct these. I also tried to download the .deb and use dpkg -i, but that failed and did not fully understand the method to be honest. • Advanced Record-Level Business Intelligence with Inner Queries

  While business intelligence is generally applied at an aggregate level to large data sets, it's often useful to provide a more streamlined insight into an individual records or to be able to sort and rank them. For instance, a salesperson looking at a specific customer could benefit from basic stats on that account. A marketer trying to define an ideal customer could pull the top entries and look for insights or patterns. Inner queries let you do sophisticated analysis without the overhead of traditional BI or OLAP technologies like Analysis Services. Example - Order History Constancy Let's assume that management has realized that the best thing for our business is to have customers ordering every month. We'll need to identify and rank customers based on how consistently they buy and when their last purchase was so sales & marketing can respond accordingly. Our current application may not be able to provide this and adding an OLAP server like SSAS may be overkill for our needs. Luckily, SQL Server provides the ability to do relatively sophisticated analytics via inner queries. Here's the kind of output we'd like to see. Creating the Queries Before you create a view, you need to create the SQL query that does the calculations. Here we are calculating the total number of orders as well as the number of months since the last order. These fields might be very useful to sort by but may not be available in the app. This approach provides a very streamlined and high performance method of delivering actionable information without radically changing the application. It's also works very well with self-service reporting tools like Izenda. If you want to change it use the statement ALTER VIEW AS. Creating Computed Columns If you'd prefer not to create a view, inner queries can also be applied by using computed columns. Place you SQL in the (Formula) field of the Computed Column Specification or check out this article here. Advanced Scoring and Ranking One of the best uses for this approach is to score leads based on multiple fields. For instance, you may be in a business where customers that don't order every month require more persistent follow up. You could devise a simple formula that shows the continuity of an account. If they ordered every month since their first order, they would be at 100 indicating that they have been ordering 100% of the time. Here's the query that would calculate that. It uses a few SQL tricks to make this happen. We are extracting the count of unique months and then dividing by the months since initial order. This query will give you the following information which can be used to help sales and marketing now where to focus. You could sort by this percentage to know where to start calling or to find patterns describing your best customers. • SQL log shipping for reporting

  I would like to create a read-only copy of my SQL Server 2008 database on a secondary server for reporting and analysis. I've been testing log shipping, configured to run every 5 minutes or so. Alas, there appears to be a stumbling block, for exclusive access is required on the target database during the restore, which in turn requires killing all active connections. This is far from ideal, especially if a user is in the middle of running a report. Any better suggestions? Edit : I'm doing this on the Express edition.

  Any thoughts on this? We've had this happen twice recently. Basically, every page throws a fatal error, fixed by an apache restart. Here's what's in the log, repeated over and over. • Maintenance Plan Reporting - Append To File - Clean Up?

  Background: (SQL Server 2005, Standard Ed.) I have a maintenance plan running backups, taking a full backup 1/day, and t-log every 15 minutes. I have it set to create a text file report of each run, but that creates A LOT of files on the file server. These are hard to sort through, which makes them less useful. Question: There is an option in "Reporting and Logging" settings for appending all logs together, but how do you clean this out? If you're appending to the same log file every time, how should you make sure this file doesn't grow indefinitely? Is there a build-in function to clean out portions of appended logs like there is for cleaning out individual old log files?

• Storage (EBS) attached to my EC2 instance reporting files on two devices at once

  I have on EC2 instance with two attached EBS drives. One drive /dev/sda1 is mounted on / The second /dev/sda2 is mounted on /var2 So here's what's strange. Whenever I add any files to /var2 the it is also reporting that the / device is also filling up. As if they are the same device. It's so strange. So if I were to save a 10 mb file to a directory on /var2. Both / and /var2 use 10 mb of space up. Is this bizarre?

• Issue with Reporting Services - rsreportserver.config is denied

  Error message is 'd:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\RSReportServer.config' is denied.' I open SSRS configuration and I do see the service as started and running. I gave Network Services the necessary permissions in the reportserver folder and config file. SQL Server and SSRS are using LocalSystem as the 'Log On As' in Sql server configuration manager. Most of my sites I googled seem only relevant when it's Network Service running. I changed it to log on as NT Autority\NetworkService but still had the same issue. In SSRS Config Manager, I see that Web Service Identity is not configured (red), though it is showing as readonly domain\aspnet. Windows Server 2003 R2 and SSRS 2005

• Windows 7 systeminfo reporting incorrect System Boot Time?

  I work 9-5 and switch my PC off when I leave the office each day. When doing timesheets I need to know what time I got to work, so I usually use cmd systeminfo for finding the System Boot Time. Since upgrading to Windows 7 however, it's started reporting bizarre numbers between 11pm-2am instead of 8-9am. Today it says it booted at 11:34pm last night! I checked the event log and there is no entries between when I shutdown at 5:30pm yesterday and booted around 8am this morning. Has anyone else encountered this?

• SQL server 2000 reporting bad values to ASP.Net Application

  I have an instance of SQL server 2000 (8.0.2039) with a rather simple table. We recently had users complain about an application I wrote returning bad values for some of the dates in the databse. When I query the table directly via Server Management Studio, it will return the correct values, however the identical queries from my application report the wrong values, but only for a couple of dates. I have been over the code, and it is solid. If the error was in the code, all of the dates reported should be wrong. I have also run the code on an identical test database, and everything is reported properly. I believe the problem may lie in the sql instance itself, which is why I am posting in Server Fault. My question is, has anyone heard of a database reporting bad (incorrect) date values when queried via web application? It should be noted that this particular server was once manually rebuilt after having a cluster clean run on it.

  On my reporting server the Security log shows large numbers of Logon/Logoff events, often 10 or more, when you run pretty much any report in the Report Manager. Is this normal or is it a classic sign of having the wrong setup? Some system details: Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2, virtual server running under VMWare). SQL Server 2005 SP3 Standard Edition, running databases, Report Manager, and Ananlysis Services cubes. No other major services on the machine (i.e. it's not a domain controller, Exchange server or anything like that). Any ideas, please, guys?

  I'm trying to monitor disks on windows 2008 R2 system, but I'm getting wrong values returned from hrStorageSize and hrStorageUsed for one of the 2 disks the system has. Local disk C: is returning correct values, whereas D: disk, which is an SAN disk, is reporting 32G instead of 500G. • Bootloader error Ubuntu 12.04, system goes to Grub-rescue instead of booting

  I am trying to install ubuntu 12.04 on my system but it is constantly giving me bootloader install fail error. I have tried to lot to solve this issue but reading articles over the internet but still no gain. Firstly since the bootloader was not getting installed I tried to install it on all the alternative paths given in the installer, failing with I selected install ubuntu without bootloader. Then I tried to manually install bootloader via terminal at try ubuntu via grub-install, but I was not able to do that. Then I tried using boot-repair and it was also not able to install the bootloader because after it my system shows grub-rescue. I tried to use boot-repair and install bootloader on a seperate partition mounted to /boot and still my system is booting and it still shows grub-rescue. The error which my system shows during boot is: Error : no such device : 04ac0510-bd4f-43b8-b885-b885-11c4dec21db8 I am not dual booting and ubuntu is the only OS I am installing. I am using Raid 0 with two blue western digital hard drive so I am not sure whether it is right or not. The details given by boot-repair are in the below mentioned link; http://paste.ubuntu.com/1147208/ Afterwards, I made one more change I installed ubuntu again and this time I installed the bootloader at a different partition on /boot. After this the bootloader error has gone but I am still not able to boot to ubuntu as I get the same error I was getting before. I have not installed dmraid, I feel it is neccessary for Raid0, but I thought ubuntu already has Raid drivers. Moreover in the dmraid installation instructions for 12.04, I used the one for 10.04 and selected to install bootloader at the partitions from the dropdown. This time the installation finished normally without an error but still I am not able to boot my system as the same error shows during booting this time also. Now I am stucked and I have no clue on how I can boot my system. Please tell me how can I boot my system.

He went ahead with various different datatype (i.e. INT, TINYINT etc) and he was able to do the SUM but with BIT he faced the problem.   If you ever receive an Error 1053 for a timeout when starting a Windows Service you've written, the underlying problem might not have anything to do with a timeout.  Here's the error so you can compare it to what you're seeing: --------------------------- Services --------------------------- Windows could not start the Service1 service on Local Computer.   Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion. --------------------------- OK   --------------------------- Searching the Web for a solution to this error in your Windows Service will result in a lot of wasted time and advice that won't help.  Sometimes you might get lucky if your problem is exactly the same as someone else's, but this isn't always the case.  One of the solutions you'll see has to do with a known error on Windows Server 2003 that's fixed by a patch to the .NET Framework 1.1, which won't work.  As I write this blog post, I'm using the .NET Framework 4.0, which is a tad bit past that timeframe. • Chrome Web Browser Messages: Some Observations

  I'm always on the lookout for how different apps handle errors and what kind of messages are shown (I probably need to get out more), I use this 'research' to reflect on our own application error messages patterns and guidelines and how we might make things better for our users in future. Users are influenced by all sorts of things, but their everyday experiences of technology, and especially what they encounter on the internet, increasingly sets their expectations for the enterprise user experience too. I recently came across a couple of examples from Google's Chrome web browser that got me thinking. In the first case, we have a Chrome error about not being able to find a web page. I like how simple, straightforward messaging language is used along with an optional ability to explore things a bit further--for those users who want to. The 'more information' option shows the error encountered by the browser (or 'original' error) in technical terms, along with an error number. Contrasting the two messages about essentially the same problem reveals what's useful to users and what's not. Everyone can use the first message, but the technical version of the message has to be explicitly disclosed for any more advanced user to pursue further. More technical users might search for a resolution, using that Error 324 number, but I imagine most users who see the message will try again later or check their URL again. Seems reasonable that such an approach be adopted in the enterprise space too, right? Maybe. Generally, end users don't go searching for solutions based on those error numbers, and help desk folks generally prefer they don't do so. That's because of the more critical nature of enterprise data or the fact that end users may not have the necessary privileges to make any fixes anyway. What might be more useful here is a link to a trusted source of additional help provided by the help desk or reputable community instead. This takes me on to the second case, this time more closely related to the language used in messaging situations. Here, I first noticed by the using of the (s) approach to convey possibilities of there being one or more pages at the heart of the problem. This approach is a no-no in Oracle style terms (the plural would be used) and it can create translation issues (though it is not a show-stopper). I think Google could have gone with the plural too. However, of more interest is the use of the verb "kill", shown in the message text and as an action button label. For many writers, words like "kill" and "abort" are to be avoided as they can give offense. I am not so sure about that judgment, as really their use cannot be separated from the context. Certainly, for more technical users, they're fine and have been in use for years, so I see no reason to avoid these terms if the audience has accepted them. Most end users too, I think would find the idea of "kill" usable and may even use the term in every day speech. Others might disagree--Apple uses a concept of Force Quit, for example. Ultimately, the only way to really know how to proceed is to research these matter by asking users of differing roles and expertise to perform some tasks, encounter these messages and then make recommendations based on those findings for our designs. Something to do in 2011!

  I'm having issues since yesterday after an upgrade. GNOME session got messed up somehow and now i cannot install further upgrades nor new apps. Here is what i got from terminal after doing the recommended apt-get install -f; (Reading database ... 166876 files and directories currently installed.) During the attach process (I just select Tools - Attach to Process, no further operation performed on the computer I am debugging -- I just wait for the attach to be completed), I met with the following error, any ideas what is wrong? The web server process that was being debugged has been terminated by Internet Information Services (IIS). This can be avoided by configuring Application Pool ping settings in IIS.   Hi folks, For two months now, googlebot is trying to get a file which does not exist anymore. This is just one example out of many: I had renamed the file to a better name and removed the old file. Now, why does Google insist on getting a file which it already has seen does not exist for months? doesn't it just give up and get on being a happy bot? My Error log file is filled with these repeating lines all wanting to get that one file, although they know for already long time that its not there: What to do in these situations?   I am not able to start Windows and am using a DVD copy of Ubuntu to start up. I see my 750 GB Hard Disk, but if I click it i get this error: Error mounting: mount exited with exit code 13: ntfs_attr_pread_i: ntfs_pread failed: Input/output error Failed to read NTFS $Bitmap: Input/output error NTFS is either inconsistent, or there is a hardware fault, or it's a SoftRAID/FakeRAID hardware. In the first case run chkdsk /f on Windows then reboot into Windows twice. The usage of the /f parameter is very important! If the device is a SoftRAID/FakeRAID then first activate it and mount a different device under the /dev/mapper/ directory, (e.g. /dev/mapper/nvidia_eahaabcc1). Please see the 'dmraid' documentation for more details.
