• How to safely backport specific linux kernel commits to an older kernel using git

  I'm currently on a stable 2.6.32 kernel. But I need certain fixes on 2.6.33 branch to be incorporated into this 2.6.32 kernel so that I can create a custom kernel for testing purposes. I can't apply the said fixes directly to the 2.6.32 source because they seem to have dependencies on other fixes. Is there any safe way to incorporate only the fixes (and all their dependencies) I need into the 2.6.32 kernel with git to create a custom kernel? Assuming there is a way to do the above, is there a way to track the fixes that have been applied to the custom kernel (i.e. track which commits have been applied to the 2.6.32 kernel to create the custom kernel source)?

  A follow-up on this system management question: Since I probably will not get much feedback on serverfault I'll give it a try here. My main concern is to reflect the dependencies between the databases, services ans tasks/jobs I'll have to manage. Besides considering Powershell, I even thought about using MSBuild because it would allow for modeling dependencies and reuse configuration targets. In other words: What technology should I use to develop a flexible solution that will allow me to stop service A, B and C on machine D in the right order and disable task E on machine F when taking down database X?

  Hi all. I need some opinions here. I'm working on a Django project using buildout to get the dependencies, etc... I use mercurial as DVCS. Now... I need to customize one of the dependencies, so I can do one of the following: (* The changes may not be useful for everyone else.) 1- Do a fork of the project in (github, bitbucket, etc...) maintain my version, and get the dependency with (mercurial or git) recipe. 2- Clone the project, put it in the PYTHONPATH, erase DVCS dirs and add it to my projects version. So every change will be private. Here I need to erase all the info from their DVCS or something. Any other you can think of. I'm missing something? I'm too off? Thanks!

The main is never executed. The most weird thing (believe me, I'm not crazy .. yet). I have been making some changes recently and apparently something screw things up. One of those changes was to upgrade the device to iOS 5.1 SDK (iPad). To add something, I have the iPhone (iOS 5.1) version of this application that use the same NSOperation object. The difference is in the UI only, and everything works fine.   I have an interview coming up where I would be a consultant to a small advertising agency. They crank out web sites for clients using DNN. tTe company owner/ operator asked me what I need in order to run with something and get it done, and eluded to wire frames and a site map. I am more used to having more detailed work and in a full time company environment but in these times it looks like we all need to be a bit more flexible. Typically I have functional and non-functional specifications defined for development work. This way I can control what is in scope, manage expectations, get sign offs, track deliverables and so on. Are there any contractors out there who develop web sites andcan advise me on the best approach to this so that I don't look foolish and get burned or taken advantage of? thanks

The helpers are not getting loaded too because I just copied the contents of the partial from the plugin instead of the render :partial = and then it came up with a helper error. Question is how to be able to :render :partial = from the views folder in my plugin

• Is there a tool for detecting Visual Studio projects with duplicate GUIDs?

  When creating new Visual Studio C++ projects there're two ways: either run the wizard and then painfully change all the necessary settings in the project or just copy and existing project, rename everything there and add files into it. The second variant is great except that the .vcproj file stores a project GUID. This GUID is used to track project dependencies and the startup project when two or more projects are in one solution. If any two projects in one solution have identical GUIDs problems can arise - dependencies are lost and the startup prject is reset on next solution reload. Clearly there's a need for a tool that would scan the filesystem subtree and detect projects with identical GUIDs here. Before I start writing one ... is there a ready tool for that?

  I have VS2005 solution that contains many projects and dependencies (some C++, some C#) - in the past it compiled successfully. when I rebuild all the solution it fails on a project claiming dll is missing (dll that was needed to built before according to dependency). the thing is that from time to time it fails on random project (not all the time the same project). I'm not sure it is meaningful but I see in output console Deleting intermediate and output files for project doesn't VS2005 go according to "Project Build Order" and ReBuild every project starting with its dependencies?

  I am not starting an argumentative discussion here and this post is not about career development, but from the commercial point of view: If a company was using ASP.Net MVC as a main methodology to build their web sites and application. However, ASP.Net MVC takes more time to show a functional application than ASP.Net Web Forms, for example, building domain models would take some time which obviously can't be represented on a UI at that current stage. My question is, if a client wants to see a functional demo application (just a proof of concept) so he knows that the company he is dealing with is professional and capable of doing that. Would it be better to do that demo in ASP.Net Web Forms only to show the client, and then work on the real application using ASP.Net MVC? If not, what are the (quick) alternatives?, I mean, if we tell the client to wait till we have a working demo (by ASP.Net MVC) we may lose the client and the whole project opportunity.

  I was looking at the PAX tools on OPS4J for example: this one and I thought I'd found a nice way to: Specify an artifact Create an assembled jar (jar that contains all dependencies) from that jar and it's transitive dependencies Wrap it with BND to create an OSGi bundle It turns out, that I was wrong - it doesn't appear that the PAX stuff does this. (RTFM, right? :) ) But this got me wondering: is there something out there that does what I'm asking? I've thought maybe I could do this by creating a simple POM and using the maven-bundle-plugin but this seems like it might be a bit cumbersome for what I'm asking. NOTE: I get that embedding and assembling jar's is not really "the OSGi way" - so I wouldn't do this unless I really felt it useful. For example - Spring. Thanks in advance.

• Key Value Observation (ala Cocoa) in GWT ?

  Hi all, There are these 2 frameworks out there in the same "cloud application" space as GWT: Sproutcore and Cappuccino. Cappuccino is Cocoa for the web, Sproutcore is Cocoa-like and one very central idea in both is Key Value Observation where the framework itself provides the glue to change all dependencies of an object when it changes, and you only have to declare those dependencies. If that was too poorly expressed please see this presentation: http://www.infoq.com/presentations/subelsky-sproutcore-intro Since the pattern reduces the amount of code you type it reduces the number of bugs. Maybe it's too much to ask but I would like to have that and all the benefits of Eclipse/compiler that come with GWT. Is there support for this in GWT, or a library already developed?   Hello everyone, I am using SQL Server 2008 Enterprise. I am wondering whether dead lock issue is only caused by cross dependencies (e.g. task A has lock on L1 but waits on lock on L2, and at the same time, task B has lock on L2 but waits on lock on L1)? Are there any other reasons and scenarios which will cause deadlock? Are there any other way which will causes dead lock -- e.g. timeout (a S/I/D/U statement do not return for a very long time, and deadlock error will be returned) or can not acquire lock for a long time but not caused by cross-dependencies (e.g. task C needs to get lock on table T, but another task D acquire the lock on table T without releasing the lock, which causes task C not be able to get lock on table T for a long time)? thanks in advance, George

• How to ignore the .classpath for Eclipse projects using Mercurial?

  I'm trying to share a repository between my Mac (laptop) and PC (desktop). There are some external dependencies for the project that are stored on different places on each machine, and noted in the .classpath file in the Eclipse project. When the project changes are shared, the dependencies break. I'm trying to figure out how to keep this from happening. I've tried using .hgignore with the following settings, among others, without success: syntax: glob *.classpath Based on this question, it appears that the .hgignore file will not allow Mercurial to ignore files that are also committed to the repository. Is there another way around this? Other ways to configure the project to make it work?

• Why does Spring Security Core RC4 require Grails 2.3?

  On the Spring Security Core plugin GitHub repo, I see that Graeme on May 21st upped the required version of Grails from 2.0 to 2.3 before the RC4 version was released a couple of months later, but I don't see any explanation for why. Was it mismatched dependencies, bug reports, etc? I run a 2.2.4 app, and I would prefer not to upgrade at this point just to get the latest RC of spring security core. I understand if the upgrade to 3.2.0.RELEASE of spring security caused mismatched dependencies with older versions of Grails since I've run into the same issues before. This originally came up due to a pull request on the spring security OAuth2 provider plugin that I maintain. The pull request upped the required version to 2.3, and the requester pointed me to the RC4 release of core as the reason. Thanks for the good works as always!

• Visual Studio: Link executable

  Lets say I have: a static library project called "LIB" a application project called "LIBAPP" a application project called "APP" a application project called "APPTEST" When i add "LIB" to LIBAPP Project Dependencies, Visual Studio automatically links "LIBAPP" against LIB. But when i add APP to APPTEST Project Dependencies, it doesnt. Since i am doing unit tests of APP's classes in APPTEST, i have to link against APP, therefore i am currently manually linking against all *.obj files of APP (hundreds...) Since i have to change the link targets of APPTEST everytime i add or remove a *.cpp file from APP, this isnt a nice solution. So is there a way to force Visual Studio to do this for me automatically, like it does when adding a static library Project Dependency ?

  I am trying for the first time to install some Ruby gems on Mac OS X Leopard. Please see the command and the output below. My question is how do I install a gem with dependencies? I tried installing individual dependency gems first from a locally downloaded files but I soon found out that there is no end to the rabbit hole :-) I also found out that there are circular dependencies that break even this tedious method. There must be a better way! • Maven workspace resolution horked

  I'm using m2eclipse to manage maven projects. Somehow I did a bad thing, and now the system is behaving as if workspace resolution is disabled. I have several projects that depend on a main project. This project has a version of 4.0-SNAPSHOT, and all the dependent projects reference it in the dependencies section of their poms. Everything was working fine until I created an entirely new project and mistakenly copied the pom from the main project into the new project. Suddenly, all of the dependent projects got the error: "The container 'Maven Dependencies" references non existing library C:\users\myusername.m2\com\mydomain\myproject\4.0-SNAPSHOT\myproject-4.0-SNAPSHOT.jar I zapped the offending new project, but the error remains for all the dependent projects. I've made no changes (to my knowledge) in the main project or any of the dependent projects, so I'm guessing something got changed in the Eclipse environment. Does m2eclipse or Maven itself maintain settings anywhere that I can blow away?

Other tasks also in the :foobar namespace. end For me, this is great, because it allows me to separate the task dependencies from each other and to move them to another location entirely, and I've been able to drastically simplify things and isolate the dependencies. The Rakefile doesn't hit a require until you actually try to run a task. Previously this was causing serious issues because you couldn't even list the tasks without it blowing up. My problem is that I'm repeating this idiom very frequently. Notice the following patterns: For every namespace :xyz_abc, there is a corresponding class in tasks/... in the file tasks/[namespace].rb, with a class name that looks like XyzAbc. For every task in a particular namespace, there is an identically named method in the associated namespace class. For example, if namespace :foo_bar has a task :apples, you would expect to see def apples() ... inside the FooBar class, which itself is in tasks/foo_bar.rb. Every task :t defines a "meta-task" _t (that is, the task name prefixed with an underscore) which is used to do the actual work. I still want to be able to specify a desc-description for the tasks I define, and that will be different for each task. And, of course, I have a small number of tasks that don't follow the above pattern at all, so I'll be specifying those manually in my Rakefile. I'm sure that this can be refactored in some way so that I don't have to keep repeating the same idiom over and over, but I lack the experience to see how it could be done.
