  • What reasons are there to place member functions before member variables or vice/versa?

    Given a class, what reasoning is there for either of the two following code styles? Style A: class Foo { private: doWork(); int bar; } Style B: class Foo { private: int bar; doWork(); } For me, they are a tie. I like Style A because the member variables feel more fine-grained, and thus would appear past the more general member functions. However, I also like Style B, because the member variables seem to determine, in a OOP-style way, what the class is representing. Are there other things worth considering when choosing between these two styles?

  • Code coverage with phpunit; can't get to one place.

    In the xdebug code coverage, it shows the line "return false;" (below "!$r") as not covered by my tests. But, the $sql is basically hard-coded. How do I get coverage on that? Do I overwrite "$table" somehow? Or kill the database server for this part of the test? I guess this is probably telling me I'm not writing my model very well, right? Because I can't test it well. How can I write this better? Since this one line is not covered, the whole method is not covered and the reports are off. I'm fairly new to phpunit.     The following are two really basic shortcuts for working with NetBeans editor windows that will be added to the Keyboard Shortcuts card for NetBeans IDE 7.2: Ctrl-Alt-PgUp/PgDown: Shortcuts for switching between editor types (e.g. Source, Design, History buttons). Switching between the editor types is a frequent operation sometimes, e.g., when using GUI builder, and while it can be done easily via mouse, or from View | Editors menu, it is very handy to know the shortcuts as well. Ctrl-PgUp/PgDown: Similarly, these are shortcuts for switching to next/previous opened document (tab). Note this is not like Ctrl-Tab that cycles in the last used order, but going through the tabs as they appear in the editor. Both shortcuts should fit into the "Opening and Toggling between Views" section. These are important to mention on the card because they are not visible anywhere else in the UI (as there are no menu items like "Go to next/previous editor type" or "Go to next/previous document").   • How can I handle all my errors/messages in one place on an Asp.Net page?

    Hi all, I'm looking for some guidance here. On my site I put things in Web user controls. For example, I will have a NewsItem Control, an Article Control, a ContactForm control. These will appear in various places on my site. What I'm looking for is a way for these controls to pass messages up to the Page that they exist on. I don't want to tightly couple them, so I think I will have to do this with Events/Delegates. I'm a little unclear as to how I would implement this, though. A couple of examples: 1 A contact form is submitted. After it's submitted, instead of replacing itself with a "Your mail has been sent" which limits the placement of that message, I'd like to just notify the page that the control is on with a Status message and perhaps a suggested behaviour. So, a message would include the text to render as well as an enum like DisplayAs.Popup or DisplayAs.Success 2 An Article Control queries the database for an Article object. Database returns an Exception. Custom Exception is passed to the page along with the DisplayAs.Error enum. The page handles this error and displays it wherever the errors go. I'm trying to accomplish something similar to the ValidationSummary Control, except that I want the page to be able to display the messages as the enum feels fit. Again, I don't want to tightly bind or rely a control existing on the Page. I want the controls to raise these events, but the page can ignore them if it wants. Am I going about this the right way? I'd love a code sample just to get me started. I know this is a more involved question, so I'll wait longer before voting/choosing the answers.

    Does anyone know any ontology which specifies opening hours of places? For example, I have a museum, which has 2 seasons. For low season (season start and end is specified), it is opened 10.00 - 18.00 on weekdays and 10-16 on saturday (on sunday it's closed), for high season it's opened 10-20 on weekdays and 10-18 on weekend. If there is no ontology, may-be people have experience, how best to structure information like that? I'm describing information in RDF. But whatever comments are welcome (even if you have relational database which holds given data). Thanks

    We are a team of many developers working on a website that uses both Joomla and custom PHP scripts. The problem is that there are multiple developers working on various features which need to update information in Joomla (adding modules, changing existing ones or changing settings) and when one developer changes something, he usually makes the change locally first and then does the same thing (hopefully) on the production server. Not only that this is very error-prone, but the developers often forget to tell other developers about the changes. The custom PHP scripts are easily shared between developers, but the changes in Joomla are often forgotten and they lead to serious conflicts when a developer tries to replicate his local changes in production. I have thought about placing Joomla in a Mercurial repository, but how could we distribute the changes in the database between the development, the testing and the production machines?

    I have a div container where I want to put in a centered image and a small description to the right. The specifications are: The image should have a bottom margin of 35px. The image should always show fully on the screen, so it resizes when the screen does. It should have the biggest size possible, but never be cropped and never use scrollbars. The image should be centered with respect to the container, with the text showing on the right margin. The text should be left-aligned horizontally, center-aligned vertically and have a 30px separation from the image. I've tried using a table in the container and using divs, but I can't find a clean solution. I can show you the non-working code I've tried on request.

  • Where should I place a function that I want to run before the cached page is served (Drupal)

    We have a intranet site that runs on Drupal. If an employee hits the site from outside our network they are required to login first. If they are already in our network, they can browse around freely. So we have a function that checks where they are coming from and redirects them to a login page if they are from outside. If we enable caching, they are not redirected because the cached page is rendered without running our function. The code currently exists inside of the theme_preprocess function. Where can I put it so that it always runs before the cached pages are served?

  • Is there a standard place to store Spring library jar files?

    I've downloaded Spring 3.0.2 with dependencies and found that it contains 405 jar files. I usually keep third party libraries in a "lib" subdirectory, but there are so many Spring jars that it seems sensible to keep them separately so that they don't swamp the other libraries and to simplify version upgrades. I suspect that I want to keep the full set of libraries in Subversion, but only deploy the subset that is actually used. Do Spring users have a standard way to deal with this problem?
