  • Proper line-ending for an open-source PHP project

    What is the proper line-ending preferences for an open-source web project? Obviously it includes source code of PHP, HTML, CSS and Javascript. The source code is managing via Github now, and there are Windows (8 & 7), Linux (Ubuntu) and OSX developers inside the team, which means all the major operating systems. P.S. We are using "Windows" CRLF line-ending, plus "UTF-8 without BOM" right now, without facing any problem, however I think it might be better to use "*nix/OSX" LF style. I heard some stories about the problems that caused by the additional "CR" on Linux or OS X.

  • telnet - is there a maximum line limit?

    I am working on several servers that use HTTP for transport of commands. What I have encountered is that some of the commands I am trying to issue by hand are very long GETs, several lines, and that when I telnet from my Mac to my Solaris system, I cannot seem to cut and paste the line successfully. I get a couple bounching sounds (which I assume is a control-g - bell) and then it never pastes everything. From trying to break it up into smaller pieces, I am getting the impression that TELNET, or my bundled telnet client or server has a maximum line length that I had never bumped into. I did some googling and superusering, but did not find anything definitive.

  • "killed" message from cron.daily, but not when run from command line

    On Fedora 17, I put a file into /etc/cron.daily with the following contents: cd / su dstahlke /home/dstahlke/bin/anacron-daily.sh exit 0 For some reason, I get a mail every day that just says /etc/cron.daily/dstahlke-daily: ...killed. I tried with and without the exit 0 line above (I noticed that some system scripts have that and others don't, I'm not sure of the purpose). Running /etc/cron.daily/dstahlke-daily from the command line as root produces no ...killed message. Other than the message, everything seems to work fine. Putting set -x in the above script, as well as in the /home/dstahlke/bin/anacron-daily.sh script shows that the ...killed message happens just after the latter script terminates (or perhaps just after the su command finishes). What causes the ...killed message? Or, is there a more acceptable way to have anacron run a user script daily? I figured that putting this in /etc/cron.daily would help the system coordinate all of the daily tasks rather than potentially running my task concurrently with the system tasks.

  • using git on DOS command line asks for password - but not when using TortoiseGit or gitBash

    I would like to use the DOS command line to enter the command: git clone "git_path.git" myDir It asks me to enter a password which I would like to avoid. I usually use TortoiseGit to do all git related operations. I would like to setup cruisecontrol using ant with a custom git task. Therefore I need to perform git clone on the command line in Windows 7. But it only works using git bash and not DOS. According to other forum entries, I tried to convert the key with puttyGen and put the file id_rsa in c:/Users/myName/.ssh I also added an authorized_keys file but it still asks for a password. Any ideas? Thanks

    I'd like to print a plot with y-error-bars and just plain points. My current Octave script looks like this: errorbar(x_list, y_list, Delta_y_list, "~.x"); title("physikalisches Pendel"); xlabel("a^2 [m^2]"); ylabel("aT^2 [ms^2]"); print -dpdf plot.pdf The plot I get has a line, although I specified the .x style option: How can I get rid of that line? And the ylabel is in the scale as well, is there some way to fix that?

  • How do I stop someone from saturating my line & wasting CPU cycles

    My web host shows inbound & outbound traffic with mrtg. I have a steady 3.5mbps inbound traffic from Nigeria. Even assuming the source IPs & destination ports are blocked with Iptables & verifying nothing is listening on those ports, will the traffic still always pass through the switch & "get" to my server (where my server wastes CPU cycles "dropping" the packets)? Assuming I was setup with a hardware firewall, the traffic would still show in mrtg assuming the firewall is behind the switch? So is there any way to stop someone from saturating your 100mbps line, if they also have a 100mbps line? Other than filing an abuse complaint with the kind folks in Nigeria?

  • scp using a password on the command line

    I am trying to write a script that will deploy a build created on my desktop machine (windows/cygwin) to a machine in my test environment (linux). I would like to use scp to copy the build to the target machine. The only account on the target machine is root, and I cannot create a special user for this task. The root user is unable to log in using an ssh key (I suspect that this is configured on the ssh server, but I do not know which configuration options control this). At any rate, I cannot change the configuration of the ssh server. My desktop machine uses Cygwin, and I have ssh installed. What I need is the command-line-fu that will allow me to put the password on the command line. I am aware of the dangers of having a plaintext password in a shell script, but that is not a concern here.

  • Kill program after it outputs a given line, from a shell script

    Background: I am writing a test script for a piece of computational biology software. The software I am testing can take days or even weeks to run, so it has a recover functionality built in, in the case of system crashes or power failures. I am trying to figure out how to test the recovery system. Specifically, I can't figure out a way to "crash" the program in a controlled manner. I was thinking of somehow timing a SIGKILL instruction to run after some amount of time. This is probably not ideal, as the test case isn't guaranteed to run the same speed every time (it runs in a shared environment), so comparing the logs to desired output would be difficult. This software DOES print a line for each section of analysis it completes. Question: I was wondering if there was a good/elegant way (in a shell script) to capture output from a program and then kill the program when a given line/# of lines is output by the program?

  • Audio Line-In on Ubuntu/Linux Mint

    I'm currently on Windows, and want to switch to Linux, but some hardware issues are preventing me. Mainly, I have a sound card that supports Line-In. On Windows, anything I plug into the line-in gets outputted to the speakers. However, when I installed Linux, because there is not a control application that comes with the driver, I have no idea how to set this up. I tried going to the sound settings and it doesn't seem to be there. I also want to configure it for 2.1 sound, and do not know how to do that... Anyone here done it before?     Today's Daily Vim says this: Assuming you're using the bash shell, the following can be helpful when composing long command lines. Start typing on the command line and then type Ctrl-x Ctrl-e, it should drop you into your system's default editor (hopefully Vim) and allow you to edit the command line from there. Once finished, save the command line, and bash will run the command. Is there any way to do this in tcsh?

I have a question probably lame but it made me stuck I have the a db query $query_Recordset10 = "SELECT * FROM products WHERE razdel='mix' AND ID='$ID+1' AND litraj='$litri' ORDER BY ID ASC"; $Recordset10 = mysql_query($query_Recordset10, $victor) or die(mysql_error()); $row_Recordset10 = mysql_fetch_array($Recordset10); $totalRows_Recordset10 = mysql_num_rows($Recordset10); This is the query for the next product in the line based in the ID of the current product thats on the page. But if the next product matching the criteria in the query is 2 or more ID's ahead my cycle breaks. So is there a way for skipping this rows and get the next ID matching the criteria.   • What are good CLI tools for JSON?

    General Problem Though I may be diagnosing the root cause of an event, determining how many users it affected, or distilling timing logs in order to assess the performance and throughput impact of a recent code change, my tools stay the same: grep, awk, sed, tr, uniq, sort, zcat, tail, head, join, and split. To glue them all together, Unix gives us pipes, and for fancier filtering we have xargs. If these fail me, there's always perl -e. These tools are perfect for processing CSV files, tab-delimited files, log files with a predictable line format, or files with comma-separated key-value pairs. In other words, files where each line has next to no context. XML Analogues I recently needed to trawl through Gigabytes of XML to build a histogram of usage by user. This was easy enough with the tools I had, but for more complicated queries the normal approaches break down. Say I have files with items like this: <foo user="me"> <baz key="zoidberg" value="squid" /> <baz key="leela" value="cyclops" /> <baz key="fry" value="rube" /> </foo> And let's say I want to produce a mapping from user to average number of <baz>s per <foo>. Processing line-by-line is no longer an option: I need to know which user's <foo> I'm currently inspecting so I know whose average to update. Any sort of Unix one liner that accomplishes this task is likely to be inscrutable. Fortunately in XML-land, we have wonderful technologies like XPath, XQuery, and XSLT to help us. Previously, I had gotten accustomed to using the wonderful XML::XPath Perl module to accomplish queries like the one above, but after finding a TextMate Plugin that could run an XPath expression against my current window, I stopped writing one-off Perl scripts to query XML. And I just found out about XMLStarlet which is installing as I type this and which I look forward to using in the future. JSON Solutions? So this leads me to my question: are there any tools like this for JSON? It's only a matter of time before some investigation task requires me to do similar queries on JSON files, and without tools like XPath and XSLT, such a task will be a lot harder. If I had a bunch of JSON that looked like this: { "firstName": "Bender", "lastName": "Robot", "age": 200, "address": { "streetAddress": "123", "city": "New York", "state": "NY", "postalCode": "1729" }, "phoneNumber": [ { "type": "home", "number": "666 555-1234" }, { "type": "fax", "number": "666 555-4567" } ] } And wanted to find the average number of phone numbers each person had, I could do something like this with XPath: fn:avg(/fn:count(phoneNumber)) Questions Are there any command-line tools that can "query" JSON files in this way? If you have to process a bunch of JSON files on a Unix command line, what tools do you use? Heck, is there even work being done to make a query language like this for JSON? If you do use tools like this in your day-to-day work, what do you like/dislike about them? Are there any gotchas? I'm noticing more and more data serialization is being done using JSON, so processing tools like this will be crucial when analyzing large data dumps in the future. Language libraries for JSON are very strong and it's easy enough to write scripts to do this sort of processing, but to really let people play around with the data shell tools are needed. I know both the start and end line numbers of the data that I want. Does anyone know a unix command (or series of commands) to extract all lines from a file between say line 16224 and 16482 and then redirect them into a new file?
