  • Create Orchard Module in a Separate Project

    The Orchard Project is a new OOS Microsoft project that is being developed up on CodePlex. From the Orchard home page on CodePlex, it states “Orchard project is focused on delivering a .NET-based CMS application that will allow users to rapidly create content-driven Websites, and an extensibility framework that will allow developers and customizers to provide additional functionality through modules and themes.” The Orchard Project site contains additional information including documentation and walkthroughs. The ability to create a composite solution based on a collection of modules is a compelling feature. In Orchard, these modules can just be created as simple MVC Areas or they can also be created inside of stand-alone web application projects.  The walkthrough for writing an Orchard module that is available on the Orchard site uses a simple Area that is created inside of the host application. It is based on the Orchard MIX presentation. This walkthrough does an effective job introducing various Orchard concepts such as hooking into the navigation system, theme/layout system, content types, and more.  However, creating an Orchard module in a separate project does not seem to be concisely documented anywhere. Orchard ships with several module OOTB that are in separate assemblies – but again, it’s not well documented how to get started building one from scratch. The following are the steps I took to successfully get an Orchard module in a separate project up and running. Step 1 – Download the OrchardIIS.zip file from the Orchard Release page. Unzip and open up the solution. Step 2 – Add your project to the solution. I named my project “Orchard.Widget” and used and “MVC 2 Empty Web Application” project type. Make sure you put the physical path inside the “Modules” sub-folder to the main project like this: At this point the solution should look like: Step 3 – Add assembly references to Orchard.dll and Orchard.Core.dll. Step 4 – Add a controller and view.  I’ll just create a Hello World controller and view. Notice I created the view as a partial view (*.ascx). Also add the [Themed] attribute to the top of the HomeController class just like the normal Orchard walk through shows it. Step 5 – Add Module.txt to the project root. The is a very important step. Orchard will not recognize your module without this text file present.  It can contain just the name of your module: name: Widget Step 6 – Add Routes.cs. By default Visual Studio adds numerous sections to the web.config. The sections that can be removed are: appSettings, connectionStrings, authentication, membership, profile, and roleManager. Step 9 – Delete Global.asax. This project will ultimately be running from inside the Orchard host so this “sub-site” should not have its own Global.asax.   Now you’re ready the run the app.  When you first run it, the “Widget” menu item will appear in the main menu because of the MainMenu.cs file we added: We can then click the “Widget” link in the main menu to send us over to our view:   Packaging From start to finish, it’s a relatively painless experience but it could be better. For example, a Visual Studio project template that encapsulates aspects from this blog post would definitely make it a lot easier to get up and running with creating an Orchard module.  Another aspect I found interesting is that if you read the first paragraph of the walkthrough, it says, “You can also develop modules as separate projects, to be packaged and shared with other users of Orchard CMS (the packaging story is still to be defined, along with marketplaces for sharing modules).” In particular, I will be extremely curious to see how the “packaging story” evolves. The first thing that comes to mind for me is: what if we explored MvcContrib Portable Areas as a potential mechanism for this packaging? This would certainly make things easy since all artifacts (aspx, aspx, images, css, javascript) are all wrapped up into a single assembly. Granted, Orchard does have its own infrastructure for layouts and themes but it seems like integrating portable areas into this pipeline would not be a difficult undertaking. Maybe that’ll be the next research task. :)

  • Implementing an Interceptor Using NHibernate’s Built In Dynamic Proxy Generator

    NHibernate 3.2 came with an included proxy generator, which means there is no longer the need – or the possibility, for that matter – to choose Castle DynamicProxy, LinFu or Spring. This is actually a good thing, because it means one less assembly to deploy. Apparently, this generator was based, at least partially, on LinFu. As there are not many tutorials out there demonstrating it’s usage, here’s one, for demonstrating one of the most requested features: implementing INotifyPropertyChanged. This interceptor, of course, will still feature all of NHibernate’s functionalities that you are used to, such as lazy loading, and such. We will start by implementing an NHibernate interceptor, by inheriting from the base class NHibernate.EmptyInterceptor.     I have a HTML page that correctly (the encoding of the physical on disk matches it) announces it's Content-Type: <!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"> <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content= "text/html; charset=utf-8"> <title> ... Opening the file from disk in browser (Google Chrome, Firefox) works fine. Requesting it via HTTP, the webserver sends a different Content-Type header: $ curl -I http:/example.com/file.html HTTP/1.1 200 OK Date: Fri, 19 Oct 2012 10:57:13 GMT ... Content-Type: text/html; charset=ISO-8859-1 (see last line). The browser then uses ISO-8859-1 to display which is an unwanted result. Is there a common way to override the server headers send to the browser from within the HTML document?

    I installed a fresh copy of Ubuntu 12 desktop then: Installed WINE from the Ubuntu Software Center. Installed WineTricks from the Ubuntu Software Center. When I type the following commands in the terminal: sudo winetricks dotnet40 I get this error message: wine cmd.exe /c echo '%ProgramFiles%' returned empty string If i try the command without sudo winetricks dotnet40 The output is as follows Executing w_do_call dotnet40 Executing load_dotnet40 ------------------------------------------------------ dotnet40 does not yet fully work or install on wine.   • How does landscape calculate memory usage?

    I'm trying to debug an OOM situation in an Ubuntu 12.04 server, and looking at the Memory graphs in Landscape, I noticed that there wasn't any serious memory usage spike. Then I looked at the output of the free command and I wasn't quite sure how both memory usage results relate to each other. Here's landscape's output on the server: $ landscape-sysinfo System load: 0.0 Processes: 93 Usage of /: 5.6% of 19.48GB Users logged in: 1 Memory usage: 26% IP address for eth0: - Swap usage: 2% Then I ran the free command and I get: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 486 381 105 0 4 165 -/+ buffers/cache: 212 274 Swap: 255 7 248 I can understand the 2% swap usage, but where does the 26% memory usage come from?

  • Calculated Columns in Entity Framework Code First Migrations

    I had a couple people ask me about calculated properties / columns in Entity Framework this week.  The question was, is there a way to specify a property in my C# class that is the result of some calculation involving 2 properties of the same class.  For example, in my database, I store a FirstName and a LastName column and I would like a FullName property that is computed from the FirstName and LastName columns.  My initial answer was: 1: public string FullName 2: { 3: get { return string.Format("{0} {1}", FirstName, LastName); } 4: } Of course, this works fine, but this does not give us the ability to write queries using the FullName property.  For example, this query: 1: var users = context.Users.Where(u => u.FullName.Contains("anan")); Would result in the following NotSupportedException: The specified type member 'FullName' is not supported in LINQ to Entities. Only initializers, entity members, and entity navigation properties are supported. It turns out there is a way to support this type of behavior with Entity Framework Code First Migrations by making use of Computed Columns in SQL Server.  While there is no native support for computed columns in Code First Migrations, we can manually configure our migration to use computed columns. Let’s start by defining our C# classes and DbContext: 1: public class UserProfile 2: { 3: public int Id { get; set; } 4: 5: public string FirstName { get; set; } 6: public string LastName { get; set; } 7: 8: [DatabaseGenerated(DatabaseGeneratedOption.Computed)] 9: public string FullName { get; private set; } 10: } 11: 12: public class UserContext : DbContext 13: { 14: public DbSet<UserProfile> Users { get; set; } 15: } The DatabaseGenerated attribute is needed on our FullName property.  This is a hint to let Entity Framework Code First know that the database will be computing this property for us. The obvious downside to this implementation is that the FullName calculation is duplicated in the database and in the UserProfile class.     Last night I received my computer that was ordered with my tax return money.  Here are the specs of my old computer: - Pentium 4 Processor - 3-4 GB RAM - ~256 GB HDD space (2 drives) - nVidia card (AGP 8x) Sorry I can't be more specific, my memory is gone :p  Here are the new computer specs (mostly): - 2.8ghz Pentium i7 quadcore - 6 GB RAM - 1 TB HDD space (1 drive) - 1 GB Radeon card (PCI-X) I also got a new monitor (22" Asus with HDMI) so will be using my 19" widescreen as a secondary monitor.   • Firefox messages in /var/log/messages

    I happened to be browsing through /var/log/messages for another reason, and I stumbled across some messages apparently related to Firefox like this: Apr 5 15:36:59 myserver kernel: [18091.188462] type=1503 audit(1333658219.144:19): operation="open" pid=6396 parent=1 profile="/usr/lib/firefox-11.0/firefox{,*[^s][^h]}" requested_mask="::r" denied_mask="::r" fsuid=1000 ouid=0 name="/shr/RiverTrip.gpx" which are really puzzling me because I really don't see why Firefox would know about these files let alone output messages about them. The /shr directory is an NTFS partition I set up on my laptop so I can access it with either Ubuntu or Windows XP. The messages are consistently showing up for a few of the files in that directory, but not all. I haven't even looked at those files or done anything else with them in a long time! I have no idea what's special with those files; they appear to be picked at random as far as I can tell. I am using Ubuntu Release 10.04 (lucid), Kernel Linux 2.6.32-38, GNOME 2.30.2, Firefox 11.0 . I hope someone can explain these spooky messages!

  • How does landscape calculate free memory?

    I'm trying to debug an OOM situation in an Ubuntu 12.04 server, and looking at the Memory graphs in Landscape, I noticed that there wasn't any serious memory usage spike spike. Then I looked at the output of the free command and I wasn't quite sure how both memory usage results relate to each other. Here's landscape's output on the server: $ landscape-sysinfo System load: 0.0 Processes: 93 Usage of /: 5.6% of 19.48GB Users logged in: 1 Memory usage: 26% IP address for eth0: - Swap usage: 2% Then I run the free command and I get: $ free -m total used free shared buffers cached Mem: 486 381 105 0 4 165 -/+ buffers/cache: 212 274 Swap: 255 7 248 I can understand the 2% swap usage, but where does the 26% memory usage come from?

    Here is the problem, I use a Cisco/Linksys AE1200 wireless network adapter to connect my desktop to a public wifi internet connection. I use ndiswrapper to use the windows driver and it had been working fine for me untill I ran the update manager overnight a few days ago.   • Lock Free Queue -- Single Producer, Multiple Consumers

    Hello, I am looking for a method to implement lock-free queue data structure that supports single producer, and multiple consumers. I have looked at the classic method by Maged Michael and Michael Scott (1996) but their version uses linked lists. I would like an implementation that makes use of bounded circular buffer. Something that uses atomic variables? On a side note, I am not sure why these classic methods are designed for linked lists that require a lot of dynamic memory management. In a multi-threaded program, all memory management routines are serialized. Aren't we defeating the benefits of lock-free methods by using them in conjunction with dynamic data structures? I am trying to code this in C/C++ using pthread library on a Intel 64-bit architecture. Thank you, Shirish

  • Issue with CSS font color in Webkit in Lion (#444 looks darker than #333)

    I have a strange issue with Safari and Chrome Mac (19.0.1084.54) in OS X Lion. Here it is, very simply put: When I display it in a Webkit browser, text set in Helvetica Neue and color Hex #444 looks a little bolder, and therefore darker, than the same text with an Hex color value of #333. This does not happen at all in Snow Leopard with the exact same browsers (same version). Happens on any website I tried, so I know it's not something related to the CSS of my website. I tried to change it live through the Inspector and it really shows up.
