  • Lost /boot partition

    Recently I installed Windows XP on my machine where I had only Ubuntu. The problem is that I had my /boot on a separate, 200 Mb partition at beginning of the hard-disk (the leftmost). Installing windows, it said that it can't write MBR because there's an unknown partition, so I formatted that partition as NTFS, and I could finally get windows installed. Now I want to restore that partition so I can use my Linux keeping both systems. Now should I install grub2 there, or it's OK by restoring partition data? If the first is the correct answer then provide me a little tutorial on installing it. Keep in mind that there was my /boot folder.

  • How to route KVM virtual machine audio to Ubuntu 11.10 host using virt-manager?

    I've been using KVM in combination with Virt-Manager and Remmina at a fair success up until now. The issue I need to solve now is to get audio from a virtualized Windows XP and make it audible on the Ubuntu 11.10 host. Remmina / RDP works for 'simple' audio (system sounds and such), but when the source gets trickier (e.g. Flash audio), Remmina / RDP messes up. So I figured I'd just connect to the machine directly using Virt-Manager. Unfortunately, it seems that even though I have successfully configured the AC97 audio device on WinXP, it's unable to get it's output to the Ubuntu host. This is probably because Virt-Manager uses VNC (and AFAIK, VNC doesn't transport audio). Does anyone know if there is a solution to fix this? I've heard of Spice, but the installation required so much voodoo last time I checked, I figured I'd let that solution boil to maturity a little longer ;) But perhaps there are other options I haven't thought of yet (which don't require switching to VirtualBox / VMware)...

  • Blue Screen Dilemma

    Ok, I burnt a cd and a jump drive and I want to install Ububtu on a windows xp computer. But the computer keeps showing the blue screen.... "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer" Is there any way I can install Ubuntu still? Do I have to fix windows to be able to install it? And if so, does anyone know how to fix it? I don't have the windows installation pack.

    Are you using Windows Vista or XP and want that Windows 7 AeroSnap goodness on your own system? Then join us as we look at AeroSnap for Windows Vista and XP. Note: Requires .NET Framework 2.0 or higher (link provided at bottom of article). Setup What exactly does AeroSnap do you might ask…here is a quote directly from the website: “AeroSnap is a simple but powerful application that allows you to resize, arrange or maximize your desktop windows with just drag’n'drop. Simply drag a window to a side of your desktop to snap it or drag it to the top to maximize. When you drag it back to the last position, the last window size will be restored.” As soon as you have finished installing AeroSnap and started it for the first time the only item that will be visible is the “System Tray Icon”. Before going any further you should take a moment to view and make any desired adjustments in the “Options”. Note: AeroSnap works with multiple monitors. You may want to have AeroSnap start with Windows each time but the really nice setting to enable here is the “Snap Preview”. If you are using AeroSnap on Vista and have Aero enabled this will really be nice. The second portion may be of interest for those who would like to enable the keyboard shortcut function. One point worth noting about this screen is that the highest number of pixels from the screen’s edge that you can set AeroSnap for is 20 pixels. AeroSnap in Action AeroSnap is extremely easy to use…just grab the top of an app window and drag it to the left, right, or top of your screen. Since we installed this on Windows Vista we made certain to enable the “Snap Preview” in the “Options”.  We started off with dragging our Firefox 3.7 window towards the left…once we got close to the edge of the screen you can see that the left half of the screen temporarily “shaded over”. Note: The “Snap Preview” displays on the left and right movements but not the top movement. Releasing Firefox snapped it right into the “shaded over” part of the screen. The great thing about AeroSnap is that it is really easy to return the app window to it former size…all that you have to do is simply click on and grab the top portion of the app window. Moving Firefox towards the top of our screen and… It quickly snaps into filling the screen. One thing that we did notice is that the window did not “Maximize” as per the function for the button in the upper right corner. Dragging towards the right side now… And snap! Tucked in all nice and neat… You can minimize the app windows to the Taskbar and they will return to their previous “snap area” when “maximized” again. Conclusion If you have been wanting to add Windows 7’s AeroSnap goodness to your Vista and XP systems then you should definitely give this app a try. Unless one would reroute .aspx to .php ?

    I'm currently learning about the different modes the Windows operating system runs in (kernel mode vs. user mode), device drivers, their respective advantages and disadvantages and computer security in general. I would like to create a practical example of what a faulty device driver that runs in kernel mode can do to the system, by for example corrupting memory used for critical OS-processes. How can I execute my code in kernel mode instead of user mode, directly? Do I have to write a dummy device driver and install it to do this? Where can I read more about kernel and user mode in Windows? I know the dangers of this and will do all of the experiments on a virtual machine running Windows XP only

  • Stuck part-way through installation of windows 7, upgrade product key, cannot cancel or finish installation

    I'm trying to install Windows 7 (to get rid of Windows 8). I started the installation, cleared the minefield Microsoft has put in to stop me uninstalling 8, but forgot that my Windows 7 disk is an upgrade. So now I'm part-way through the 7 install. Can't go back, can't convince Microsoft that I have a valid key; I tried stopping the Windows 7 install and booting XP first, but I can't either - the unfinished Windows 7 install prevents that. Where's the way out? Update: Having spent some time with a Microsoft operative, I know why I can't install XP; this recent computer doesn't support IDE SATA mode, only AHCI. So the problem is: - straight install - key not valid - XP first before upgrade - XP cannot install due to newer HDD interface.

  • VBE6.dll not found when opening Access 2007 database in Access 2010

    I have an access 2007 database that has some VBA code in it. I need to open this database in Access 2010, but when I first open it I get an error that says: the expression on open you entered as the event property setting produced the following error: file not found: VBE6.dll I believe it's becuase Access 2010 references VBE7.dll when it loads up, and my database was built to reference VBE6.dll. I've tried putting VBE6.dll in the same folder that VBE7.dll resides in, hoping it would just get loaded up, but no luck. What can I do to resolve this?

  • Offset the tickmarks of a secondary axis

    I would like to offset the tickmarks of a secondary axis in excel WITHOUT changing the minimum. Here is a very complicated VBA class that apparently solves the issue but I would like a solution that doesn't require me to construct my entire chart in VBA. Here is an example of what I mean (I removed the chart insides so it looks funny, but really only the axes matter for this question): I am happy with the primary axis on the left. The secondary axis is just the primary axis plus 7.96%, so the secondary axis HAS TO have 0.0796 as a minimum. But I would like my tickmarks to be at nice rounder numbers so I would like to offset the starting point of the secondary axis' tickmarks to only start at 8%. Does anyone know of a way to achieve this? Just to be clear about the VBA, I am happy to use a VBA solution but I don't have the time to actually construct the chart itself in VBA. Using VBA to get a handle on the chart and make the adjustment would be perfect.

  • Why is lassoing ink in OneNote so slow in general? Doesn't anyone care?

    Now I understand that this is especially an (known) issue in the OneNote 2013 preview and that it will probably be fixed in the final release. But lassoing in OneNote 2010 was no sprightly affair either. I'm just perplexed really, why on earth is there such an issue? Is lassoing intrinsically computationally expensive? OneNote would be soooooooooooo much more useful if there's no lasso lag. And doing a laggy lasso on tablet pcs with weak processors is just so much worse. Or do most folks just don't use the lasso feature much? I use it primarily to shrink intermediate calculations for future retrieval.

    I have to average grades based on each objective for a new report card we have to complete this year. For example Column one has students names, each additional column will have the objective associated with the assignment. I would like to move the entire column to another sheet for each objective. Is there a formula or macro that will do that. For example objective 3.1A is in columns 2, 5, and 7, objective 3.2B is located in columns 1, 4, 10, and 12, objective 3.4c is in column 3, 6, 9, and 11. I would like to have a spreadsheet for each objective.

  • PowerPoint '10 avoid animation completion on click & advance slide or start new one

    Scenario I have PowerPoint 2010 On the "Transitions" tab the "Advance Slide On Mouse Click" check box is checked. I have a long, slow, timed, non-repeating animation working in the background of the slide. I click to advance the slide before the animation is finished, but ... Instead of advancing the slide, the animation moves to the completed state ... Forcing a second click to actually advance the slide. Additionally If I have other animations on the slide that are initiated by a click, the long animation also advances to a finished state before starting the new animation. Desired Behavior On click, I want the slide to advance or the next on-click animation to start whether the long animation is done or not, and without having that long animation first "complete" itself. In the case of another animation, I simply want the long animation to continue, while also doing the new animation. Ultimate Question Is there a way to either: Set an option somewhere to not have that animation complete on click and simply "continue" to animate with the start of a new animation or to advance the slide (as the case may be)? Create a VBA script that will produce the desired behavior for the long animation?
