• Advantages of multiple SQL Server files with a single RAID array

  Originally posted on stack overflow, but re-worded. Imagine the scenario : For a database I have RAID arrays R: (MDF) T: (transaction log) and of course shared transparent usage of X: (tempDB). I've been reading around and get the impression that if you are using RAID then adding multiple SQL Server NDF files sitting on R: within a filegroup won't yeild any more improvements. Of course, adding another raid array S: and putting an NDF file on that would. However, being a reasonably savvy software person, it's not unthinkable to hypothesise that, even for smaller MDFs sitting on one RAID array that SQL Server will perform growth and locking operations (for writes) on the MDF, so adding NDFs to the filegroup even if they sat on R: would distribute the locking operations and growth operations allowing more throughput? Or does the time taken to reconstruct the data from distributed filegroups outweigh the benefits of reduced locking? I'm also aware that the behaviour and benefits may be different for tables/indeces/log. Is there a good site that distinguishes the benefits of multiple files when RAID is already in place?

  Extract data from specific range of cells(always the same cells) in multiple worksheet in multiple files. 1 file=1 day. I have 6 technicians each day of the week, Monday thru Friday. So, 5 files with 6 worksheets. I have entered specific info in specific cells of every work sheet. The range is constant(the same address in EVERY worksheet in every file.) So, I need a formula to extract and calculate the data in the given range and dump it into another spreadsheet. I can forward an example a file if it will help anyone to answer my question.   BACKGROUND My team gave a demo to a large audience - we recorded the audio of the demo in multiple locations in the room (3) the audio was recorded using cheap laptop microphones I was not involved in the recording of the audio or the demo Both audio files suck in some form the first one is of a recording near the speaker - which clearly gets his voice but the the audience is audience is muffled - also this one is slightly noisy The second recording was done in the middle of the audience - it gets the audience questions clearly but actually gets the speaker rather sometimes well and sometimes poorly (not all the speakers spoke loudly enough to be heard) MY QUESTION Is there any techinque or software which can be used to merge these audio files in such a way that the best qualities of each are preserved. I am NOT asking now to simply merge them together in one track - I've already done that in Audacity and it is certainly better - what I am looking for could be considered closer to how HDR images are created - multiple exposures combined into an enhanced new version which is not simply an average of the inputs. NOTE Am not an "Audio" guy - just a normal user

  Hi guys, I am working on a iptables rule to apply after my shorewall script has initialized my firewall. I want a spicific IP (10.0.1.19) address in my lan to be redirected to 10.0.64.1 except if it is going to paypal.   I've been using Microsoft Outlook for a very long time, although one thing that has bugged me is how multiple email accounts are handled. As far as I can tell, there isn't a set and straightforward way of managing multiple accounts in one instance of outlook. For example, when I create an email, saving it as a draft will by default dump it into the first personal folder that I have open, which in my current case, is not where I want it. I would like all trash, spam, drafts, contacts, etc. etc. to be handled on a PF by PF basis. Now to my question: Is there a way to accomplish the task of email account "segregation" in Outlook (2007 is my current version), or is there another client that handles this in a more organized fashion? Note: I don't use most of the features in outlook (I hardly even need special formatting for my messages), I generally just send and read mail, and get a few attachments, so leaving Outlook wouldn't be too much of a stretch for me.

  I was asked to see if there is any kind of (free) software that allows multiple people in an office that use the same printer to see what jobs have finished recently, which are queued and which is printing. Main reason is that sometimes multiple people have the same task where they need to print some kind of form, and they are unsure whether or not their colleague has already printed the file. Because the printer is AD integrated, they only see a short message when printing, but they do not see a proper printer queue. A simple tray icon/tool would be perfect, no real graphical user interface is required. If this turns out to be too hard to find, I will attempt to write a simple application or script for the job, but since this is a low priority job I decided to ask here first before I start messing around with scripting which isn't my forte. • Best way to install multiple versions of Apache, PHP and MySQL on a single FreeBSD host

  I want a test- and development-environment for web using Apache, PHP and MySQL. I need to be able to test a single web-application with multiple versions of PHP (5.2, 5.3, etc) and multiple versions of MySQL (5.0, 5.1, 5.5, etc). It shall be hosted on a FreeBSD server. My idea is to compile each version into a directory structure and running them on separate portnumbers. For example: opt/apache2.2-php5.2-mysql-5.0 (httpd on port 8801, mysql on port 8802) (directory contains each software, compiled and linked towards eachother) opt/apache2.2-php5.3-mysql-5.1 (httpd on port 8803, mysql on port 8804) (and so on) Any thoughts or suggestions of the best way to setup this type of environment?

  I have two physical hosts running Xen 3.2, sharing storage via iSCSI. On these two hosts are a number of domUs and I'd like to network them in multiple private networks so they can only contact other domUs on their private network. My understanding of the xen documentation suggests it's possible to do this within one dom0 (ie create virtual networks between domUs), but I've found nothing explaining how this can be implemented across multiple dom0s on different hosts. The only thing that jumps to mind is manually creating iptable rules to route data to the other host, but this seems to lack elegance and could quickly grow cumbersome. Any suggestions? All advice is much appreciated!

• PowerDNS: multiple supermasters and transfering domain

  Hi, I've got a setup with multiple supermasters (bind) and multiple superslaves (pdns). It all seems to work just fine, pdns is being updated when I'm adding or changing a domain. But, when I want to migrate a domain from one master to another, pdns doesn't like it. It tells me the new server isn't a master for this domain, although I deleted the domain on the old server. Now, I think that part of the problem is, that pdns doesn't get an update when a domain is deleted, which would also explain a lot of dead domains in my pdns. It looks like the slave is constantly polling a server and getting RCODE=5 back. The master isn't aware of the domain and the slave thinks the master still serves that domain. Anyone familiar with this problem?

  I am looking at my server's spamassasin and have stumbled across the "problem" that my outgoing email sends out its own X-Report and X-Score in the header (programs used are Outlook 2007 as client and exim4 with the vexim plugin and Spamassasin). On the one hand I want to get rid of the sent X-Report which gets sent out with every email and on the other hand I still want to have it for incoming mails. While I was trying to fix this (which I still haven't) I stumbled across this "error" which makes my email less trustworthy: 1.4 MSGID_MULTIPLE_AT Message-ID contains multiple '@' characters How do I get rid of the multiple '@' characters?

• Unable to drag and drop / select multiple with mouse

  I'm running into a perplexing issue with Windows 8 Pro x64, where randomly I'm unable to drag to select multiple files (i.e. in Explorer or Directory Opus). I've also noticed that a similar issue happens when I'm running for example Photoshop or Illustrator and can't drag to select multiple layers, or drag to do some other things in them. it happens randomly and have found no way to reliably reproduce it, but it happens VERY frequently. I have read some tips saying pressing the ESC button usually fixes the issue, but it doesn't in my case. From what I understand, it's probably due to some other process locking the drag feature somehow, but I've not found a way to tell which process is the perp; I've even tried using unlock software on files when I'm suddenly unable to drag and I'm told by it that nothing is locking it. Anyone have any ideas?

  Hi, I have an Adaptec AHA-2940UW SCSI adapter, to which I connected a single Atlas 10K III drive (and nothing more). When my computer loads up, the pre-OS Adaptec screen shows (I believe this is called the POST screen), where I can see the Atlas drive listed many times (i.e. with ID0, ID1, ... ID5, ID7, ID8,...,ID15 [ID6 is the adapter itself]) Using the same HD on an Adaptec AHA-2940UB the disk only shows once Since my OS hasn't been installed yet, I'm not sure if this is a problem (I would guess it is), and if so - how to solve it. Termination and multiple LUNs come mind, but the cable provides termination and I don't see why a hard drive would request multiple LUNs, especially considering it is not jumpered at all, and multuple LUN support is disabled in the Adaptec controller BIOS (via the SCSISelect utility) Thank you

  I have inherited an organizational chart that was created in Visio 2003. I am updating it with Visio 2007. When changing the text in one shape, such as a person's title, multiple shapes nearby change their text to the same. For example, if I change Bob's title from Programmer to Programmer/DBA then Wendy's text will change to "Bob - Programmer/DBA". Some changes update three or four other boxes. Some changes will only update one box. My thought is the originator copied or duplicated the one box to create multiple boxes and it created some type of link between them. How do I remove this link? For the past month or so, the archiver account has been receiving multiple copies (about 15 or so) of each and every email. edit: All copies share the same Message ID. The machine that hosts exchange is updated religiously and an antivirus scan is run on a daily basis. So would anyone please have any ideas about how to deal with this and furthermore, how i would be able to delete the multiple copies of emails from outlook 2003 inbox.   Anyone know if there is a way to setup a Word form to allow the user to select multiple items from a dropdown list that are then displayed? For example, I need to setup a form to identify applicability of specific procedures to various levels of our organization. Since the listing of all departments under all divisions can be pretty lengthy, I was hoping for the ability to check off a division and then have a dropdown list on the same line to select the applicable departments (so the selections are specific to that division and not all listed on the form if that division is not applicable). First, I'm not seeing how to create a dropdown that would allow multiple selections. Beyond that, I don't know if that form element alone would then display all selected items or if that would require another element of some type. Anyone have any suggestions on this? • Single NFS folder shared across multiple clients

  I'm trying to mount a single NFS folder from server say "/share/folder" to multiple clients up to 32 clients, and the clients tries to access the folder and create files. The problem I'm facing is that when I execute the write command I see only one client is able to access the folder the remaining clients are blocked and not able to proceed to write.   I'm going to be moving in a few months. The location I'm moving to is great except it's on a road with very few people, so the internet access option is limited to DSL at 1.6Mbps down, 384kbps up. This is much slower than I'm used to. One option is to get at least two of the DSL lines. There's also good possibility that I'll be able to get WiMax or similar. I've been looking around a bit and it seems like what I need is a load balancing router with multiple WAN ports. Can anyone recommend some good ones?   This question is similar to SSH public key authentication - can one public key be used for multiple users? but it's the other way around. I'm experimenting on using ssh so any ssh server would work for your answers. Can I have multiple public keys link to the same user? What are the benefits of doing so? • Cisco ASA 5505 inside interface multiple ip addresses

  I have an issue this morning where I want to be able to assign multiple ip addresses to the inside interface to facilitate an ip range migration for an office. Namely from a 192.168.1.x range to the new range, with the minimum of interruption for those working in the office. (New DHCP leases will use the new range, whilst those still on the 192.168.1.x range can continue to work until their lease is renewed). However I can not for the life of me figure out how to achieve this, trying to create multiple interfaces for the job leads to complaints about the license only allowing 2 active interfaces.
