  • Using Komodo IDE as Text editor from the OS X terminal

    According to this URL I should be able to start Komodo IDE from the command line when I want to edit a file. I set up the symbolic link using (on single line) ln -sf "/Applications/Komodo IDE.app/Contents/MacOS/komodo" /Users/lexu/bin/komodo but when I type afg-2:~ lexu$ komodo .bash_profile I get dyld: Library not loaded: /usr/lib/libsqlite3.dylib Referenced from: /System/Library/Frameworks/Security.framework/Versions/A/Security Reason: Incompatible library version: Security requires version 9.0.0 or later, but libsqlite3.dylib provides version 1.0.0 /Applications/Komodo IDE.app/Contents/MacOS/run-mozilla.sh: line 131: 4370 Trace/BPT trap "$prog" ${1+"$@"} and a dialog that says My guess is I need to somehow let Komodo know it needs to use different libraries?     I want to buy my dad an iPod nano for christmas. All he has for a computer is an old G4 that is still running Mac OS X 10.3.x (10.3.9 probably) What iPod can I buy him and he still be able to use? The newest nano requires iTunes 9 which he cannot run. Thanks!

  • Disabling the Driver Region on a Mac

    So, this is the first time I try to watch a DVD disc on my (new) Mac and I wonder if I can keep it as fresh-new by not choosing any region and just play discs from anywhere. I understand the media industry made that lock for copyright and whatever, but do I absolutely have to choose a region to be able to play disks, even if I got original ones from different places? Why can I "change region" just 5 times, why even allowing changing? Also, on a side-note, I wonder how to disable the regular DVD Player.

  • Safari's location bar (auto-suggest and web search)

    Auto-suggest don't seem to work for queries with spaces. Am I missing something? If you select an item from the suggestion list that was matched by its title, the title is filled in before the address. Can you change it to work like in other browsers? SMRT disables searching by title completely. Can you combine Top Hit, History and Bookmarks into a single section? The preferences starting with DebugSafari4 don't work anymore. (Like DebugSafari4IncludeFancyURLCompletionList.) Can you direct unresolved addresses to something like google.com/search?q=?&btnI instead of ?.com? Like by changing keyword.URL in Firefox. Can you remove or hide the web search field? In Camino, Cruz and Fluid it can be resized to zero width. You can't circumvent the normal maximum ratio with InputFieldWidthRatio. AddressBarIncludesGoogle doesn't appear do anything in the current version. Are there fixes or workarounds to any of these? I'm lumping these issues together, because they are closely related — a lot of them were introduced when the location bar was redesigned in Safari 5. I'm also hoping to find something like an extension or a plugin that would replace the standard location bar.

    I have several users that are insisting on the purchase of Toast. They will be using it to make backups of disks at possibly re-burn them if needed. I have used Disk Utility for that function. At this point there is no addition functionality needed. However, that can always change in the future. Is there any advantages or disadvantages to either solution?

  • Can't get iPhone to Sync with MacBook running OS X.

    I can't get the iPhone to sync with my MacBook running OS X, I've re-installed OS X and iTunes and then it worked, however once the MacBook had been switched off and on again the iPhone wouldn't sync. I then deleted AppleMobileDevice.kext, DeviceLink.Framework, MobileDevice.Framework and AppleMobileDeviceSupport.pky and re-installed iTunes, this then solved the problem until the MacBook was turned off and then on again.   • Why Is Web Sharing Broken on My Mac?

    Background: I use my Mac for web development, running copies of web sites locally. I recently installed the Snow Leopard update, which to all intents and purposes seems to have gone fine, except... What's not working? Web-sharing; more specifically I can't turn it on via preferences. The preference pane just hangs when I try to. So Apache doesn't start on reboot. I can start Apache by hand, but I don't know enough to either setup apache to start with the computer, or to properly fix web sharing. Further details My Apache error log shows nothing on when the system boots up (as I would expect). This is the error message when I try to start web sharing from the sharing preference pane. 28/09/2009 10:58:05 System Preferences[834] setInetDServiceEnabled failed with 1 for org.apache.httpd Here's the messages given when I start apache from the command line.   • I can't connect new Windows 7 PC to Mac iBook with OS 10.3.9

    Help ! I have an old iBook wired to a router and a new PC linking wirelessly to same router. On the Mac I have 'seen' the PC but not been able to connect to it. On the PC, the Network and Sharing Centre lists 'IBOOK'. When I click on this, 'Windows Security' asks me to 'Enter Network Password', asking for User name and password. I have tried: 1) The user name and password of my admin account on the iBook. This returns a 'logon failure' message but lists the user name as [NAME_OF_PC\User Name], suggesting it was looking for the user name of the PC, not the Mac. 2) The user name and password of my account on the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. 3) The user name of my account on the PC and the 'homegroup password' given to me by Windows when setting up the PC. This also returns a 'logon failure' message. Today I've tried connecting the two machines via a patch cable - still no joy. Can anyone help? It is 20 years since I wrestled with any OS other than Mac, and 10 years since I've done mich wrangling with the Macs, so please assume no knowledge! Thanks in advance,

  • Auto-hide OS X menu bar?

    Is there a way to auto-hide the OS X menu bar, like is possible with the Dock? There was an application "Menufela" that did this for Tiger, but I'm not aware of anything similar for Leopard/Snow Leopard.. I'm almost certain this is (programatically) doable, because in full-screen applications the menu bar is hidden, and reappears when you mouse the mouse is at the top of the screen..   • Help transferring Mac OS X fonts to Windows

    I have been sent a QuarkXPress document which contains a number of unusual fonts which were also sent to me. The fonts were in a folder named fonts and then it was all zipped up into a single archive containing the document and fonts folder. I believe this was done on a machine running Mac OS X. I have unzipped the archive, but all of the files in the fonts folder have no size - i.e. they are 0 bytes files. However there is also a _MACOSX folder which has a fonts subfolder. In here I can see all the font files (prefixed with .) and they all have a size, i.e. are not 0 bytes. Presumably these are the actual font files I need but I cannot figure out how to install them on Windows. I have tried renaming the files to have .ttf and .otf extensions and then installing them but that doesn't seem to work - I just get an "Invalid font file" message. Any other ideas?

What's going on?

I'm not really a perl user beyond enjoying it for massive directory-recursive find/replace operations within text files, so I haven't much of an idea what the permissions here are supposed to look like, and I'm not really sure how to go about determining how macports has gone and installed perl this way when it's otherwise worked without failure for years now. Does anyone have any recommendations for the sanest path towards rectifying this issue? Also, is there any interesting reason as to why the macports default for the perl5 port installs 5.12.4, and not 5.16.0, which has to be explicitly installed via the perl5.16 port? Thanks again!

  • File association for editing on a mac

    I'm quite experienced with how file association works for opening files on Mac OS X. I recall reading somewhere that OS X keeps not only the information about which apps can open a file, but also which apps can edit a specific file type. I'm having problems with those applications (Coda, Espresso, Forklift, Flow) that have an “edit with external editor” feature, since issuing this command on HTML files opens them with Dashcode. Dashcode of course is not the current association for opening these files (Safari is), so it's clearly looking for apps that can edit HTML. Since I'd like to use TextMate as my editor in these cases, how can I set this preference?

    I'd like to convert a folder of PNGs into a quicktime .mov with PNG compression (it's a folder of fractals in an animation; PNG compression works great here and the losslessness is important). What programs will do this with minimal fuss? (I don't have or want to pay for a full license of QuickTime Pro.) UPDATE: Let me make this more clear: minimal fuss means: I download some EncoderMagic.app (for example), I double click it to launch it. I select the folder with my numbered images, and out pops my movie. No mess. No resizing. ... Perhaps this doesn't exist (or is called QuickTime Pro?)

  • OS X Snow Leopard fails to boot after upgrade to 10.6.1

    I'm a fairly recent mac user. Been using windows for decades and happily switched. But i upgraded from 10.6 to 10.6.1 last night and the upgrade looks like it failed. I restarted the machine when it asked to then went to bed. In the morning the computer was still trying to shut itself off. So i forced the shutdown, restarted, but now i'm stuck with the loading spinner. What can i do? UPDATE: Verbose didn't show anything interesting. i also did the hardware test. Nothing comes up wrong. Disk utility did not find any error on the HD. But, it did show a fatal error when checking permissions.

  • adding mongo to path

    Bit of a noob question. I have downloaded MongoDb and installed it here /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb In order to start it, I then have to 'cd' into the 'bin' /Users/mike/downloads/mongodb/bin and run ./mongod (to start the database) and ./mongo (to start the mongo shell) The problem is that I can only work with python and ruby scripts using the mongo shell if I have those scripts stored in the same bin directory, and I don't think that's the ideal set up. Will exporting the path allow me to access mongo from outside the bin? For example, I would prefer to have my ruby scripts in /sites/ruby and be able to access mongo by starting ruby in /sites/ruby. If exporting to path is the solution, how do I do that. I'm using a mac

  • Is iTerm still relevant against Terminal? [OS X]

    Back in the day when Tiger ruled the world, iTerm was a must have for me if only just for the tabs feature that Terminal didn't have. After Leopard came out Terminal got several improvements, like supporting tabs and implementing profiles. Since that day I just don't see the need for iTerm, but I still notice there's people using it. There's something I'm missing? Why should I use iTerm over Terminal?

  • rsync not copying hard links

    I have two computers (both MacBook Airs) for which I sync one directory tree in both, but not the entire hard drive or any other directories. Let's say on computer A the directory is /Users/aellett/projects Let's say on computer B the directory is /Users/bellett/projects Generally, I'll log into computer B and then remotely connect to computer A as user 'aellett'. As super user I sync the two project directories as follows: rsync -av /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ and this works as expected. On both computers I have another file letter.txt in a different directory which is not getting synced. Let's say on computer A the file is found in /Users/aellett/letters On computer B the file is found in /Users/bellett/correspondence Generally, I don't want to share what's not included in /Users/<username>/projects. But I do want to share this particular file. So on both computer I made a correspondence directory in projects. And then I made hard links as follows On computer A: ln /Users/aellett/letters/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt On computer B: ln /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt The next time I synced the two computers I did the following rsync -av -H /Volumes/aellett/projects/ /Users/bellett/projects/ When I checked on computer B, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was correctly synced. But, the hardlink to /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt was no longer there. In other words, /Users/bellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt was identical to /Users/aellett/projects/correspondence/letter.txt but it differed from /Users/bellett/correspondence/letter.txt. Since these two files were hard linked on both computers, I expected them to still have the hard link. Why are my hard links not being preserved?
